PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Page 2 Dear friends: rarr As always, we have had the highest intake of cats from June to September. The total number of homeless cats/kittens we have taken in the last few months is close to 200! These cats were mostly strays, some were mothers and their litters of kittens, and some were motherless kittens. While kittens are always adoptable, they are also the ones that involve a lot of vet expenses. This is because these outdoor kittens are always malnourished and are more susceptible to diseases. Many also contracted diseases from the outdoors. Our vet bills are always the highest for this period! The STARLIGHT SOIREE, our annual fundraising gala, took place on Sept 21. It was a very successful event. Pictures can be seen on s Page 9. The weather is getting colder, but we are still working hard to raise funds for our animals! We have scheduled the yearly PET PICTURE WITH SANTA for your pets on 4 dates in November and December, at two locations of SHERIDAN NURSERIES. All proceeds from these events will go to our rescued animals. Details are given on Page 8. Please come and support us. I wish you a happy and safe winter! It does not have a shelter, business venue or paid staff. It receives no support from the Government, City or the SPCA. Our funds come from donations, adoption fees and fund raising events. Without a shelter, MHS depends on the kindness of foster parents who open their heart and home to animals in need. By fostering a pet you are helping to SAVE a LIFE. 4 Page 4! LORELEI (LOREE) My BEGUILING CAT! By Trilby R.L. I was ten years old when I adopted my first cat Amanda. She by contrast was only 3 days old. Born in a dumpster, she had come to my house to be fostered until she was old enough to be adopted, but as happens, she never left. She was my first pet and my beloved friend for eighteen years until her kidneys failed and I was faced with a difficult choice to let her suffer or release her from my care. Somehow my little kitten had grown into an old woman under her cashmere soft fur. She died on my birthday and I mourned her for eleven months. In August 2017 I finally resolved to find a new kitten; I was struggling having a catless home. Amanda had been a beautiful golden calico-tabby, and with her loss still fresh I found I couldn t really bond to any other calicos or tabbies. I visited the pet stores nearby, but eventually resorted to the Mississauga Humane Society Website. There I saw plenty of cats, but few kittens. I debated about getting an adult cat but having raised Amanda from so young, I wanted a similar bond with my new feline so kept browsing for kittens. In September I found two: Lana and Nellie, little grey kittens with big yellow eyes. Lana s picture showed a sweet and playful kitten, but there was something intense in Nellie s large beguiling eyes. I was told Lana was already chosen but Nellie was still available for adoption. That same day I completed my application and was interviewed over the phone. I met Nellie that night. Nellie was surprises right from the start. First, what her picture had failed to show was that she was missing most of her tail (it was only a few inches long) and she was polydactyl (she had thumbs). Secondly she was very smart, luring another cat out of her desired bed with a toy. Third were her long searching glances. She was an old cat in a tiny body, and when I asked about her history I learned that she had moved around a lot and already been adopted once, but then returned. I was sold. This tiny fluff ball had already survived so much, she deserved my love, and I hoped she would find me worthy of hers. I picked her up at the end of the week, giving me a chance to kitten proof my small home and find an appropriate name. I finally decided on LORELEI (LOREE for short) as it means beguiling. Once we arrived home, Loree immediately sought to explore every nook and cranny, seemingly overwhelmed that all this space was now hers. Initially, her only safe place was on top of my tallest bookshelf, wedged in the small space there below the ceiling. She noted her new toys with suspicion, only gently playing with them as if she expected them to be removed if she was too rough. But as the weeks passed she seemed to slowly realize that she wasn t leaving here, that this place really was hers. About a month later, II came home from work one day to find all my rugs pushed up against the wall so that she might play kitty-football by sliding frictionless along the tile. She took to watching out the windows, always on vigil in case something unsavory occurred in her yard. These little displays of dominance warmed my heart as they meant she was finally considering this place hers as well as mine. Loree also displayed a keen intelligence for a cat, once using a Swiffer duster to fish out a toy that had gotten stuck under a book case. Her little thumbs also allowed her to grab things that most other cats would have been unable to, such as drawer handles. She developed the strange habit of stealing all of my lip balms, lipsticks, pencils, pens and any other cylindrical object. They would remain in limbo for a day or two before being returned to me, usually neatly dropped at my feet. What she inspects them for I will probably never know. A few months later it snowed for the first time and I got to hear her growl for the first time too. Puffed up all fat, she stood guard valiantly at the window in case the small white flakes invaded our house. She smartly ignored my small three-foot Christmas tree, instead entertaining herself with chasing my new socks and teaching herself how to open her kibble bag, all while proudly wearing her tiny ugly Christmas sweater. The chill of winter found her snuggled up in bed with me, something that hasn t ceased even though in the heat of high summer. This last year has seen LORELEI change from an aloof timid kitten into a fiercely sweet cat. She loves her home, all the hidden places that are hers alone, and she loves to sprawl out on my pillow, whether I m sleeping there or not. We are both so grateful that the MHS brought us together and hope that many other little kittens (and cats) get to find their furever homes as well.

NEWS & EVENTS RBC (ROYAL BANK of CANADA) SEASON of GIVING Program We are pleased to announce that we recently partnered with RBC in their SEASON of GIVING program. Under the program, RBC would donate a $1,000 grant to charities who host an event for voluntary work for a group of their employees. Up to four events can be hosted for each charity. We have already organised two events! The first one took place on Aug 25, Three employees from RBC plus three MHS volunteers joint efforts and did a Thorough Cleaning of our Cat Enclosure at Dundas East Animal Hospital. A great job was done, and the Enclosure became "Sparklingly Clean" 3 hours later! We think the cats there were happier too! Their second project was volunteering at our Cat Adoptation/Bake Sale at Pet Valu Mavis/Dundas on Aug 18 & 19. More than 10 of their employees showed up! Thank you, RBC, for the grants. Special thanks to Crystal Paterson who organised the team of volunteers from the RBC. Page 7 VOLUNTEER FAIR On July 10 MHS participated in a Volunteer Fair organised by INGRAM MICRO, the world's largest distributor of computer and technology products with over 800 associates. They offer their associates a PAID VOLUNTEER DAY for them to volunteer at a charity of their choice. MHS was invited to a VOLUNTEER FAIR where we had the opportunity to speak to their associates about our Society`s work and the various volunteers opportunities available. Thanks to Lily & Lori for volunteering at the Fair! REVERA SENIOR HOME REACHING OUT to the SENIORS On Sept 26, 2018 MHS was asked to make a presentation for the REVERA SENIOR HOME on Constitution Place in Mississauga. Lily Chan the President gave a little speech about MHS to a group of seniors while Rod Watson, our foster parent talked about his fostering experience. Of course, LADYBUG, the foster dog of Rod, received all the attention! The seniors were impressed with our work and many made donations on spot! REVERSA may consider taking in a Resident Cat from our Society! THANK YOU RSA (Royal & Sun Alliance) RSA (Sheridan Office) has again designated MHS as one of the 3 charities for fund raising this year. This will be the third year of their sponsorship for MHS! In Sept we received the third donation cheque for this year! A big THANK YOU to all the staff of RSA!
NEWS & EVENTS Page 8 STEPPING OUT OF MISSISSASUGA NEW CAT ADOPTION ENCLOSURE MHS has reached another milestone! We have a NEW CAT ADOPTION ENCLOSURE and it s out of Mississauga! MHS was approached by Karamjit, the store owner of Pet Valu Port Union in Scarborough who offered to partner with MHS in Cat Adoptions. On September 19, 2018 a Cat Enclosure was set up at their store and TACO & TONY, two of our rescued cats, moved in the same day! Both TACO and TONY have now been adopted! ADOPTION WEEKEND/BAKE SALE/GARAGE SALE PET VALU Mavis/Dundas A CAT/KITTEN ADOPTHON WEEKEND /BAKE SALE/GARAGE SALE was held on August 18 and 19 at PET VALU Mavis/Dundas. pretty successful event and 7 cats/ kittens were adopted. It was a Thanks to the volunteers at the event, especially the RBC staff and their friends/families. Thanks also to Kathryn & Bernadette for the baked items, and especially to Jennifer for the delicious home made VEGAN cupcakes, each beautifully wrapped and with a professional ingredient card! CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISING As in the past years, we will be having two fund raising events during the Christmas time. Picture with Santa There will be 4 dates for this event and at two locations of SHERIDAN NURSERIES. Give Me A Heart Make a donation to help our animals, and we will put a HEART on the VIRTUAL Christmas Tree. YOUNG ROLE MODEL JOSH is a young animal lover and also owner of 'a number of cats' (it's a secret!). For his recent 11th birthday party he asked his friends to buy an item for a homeless dog or cat in lieu of birthday gifts for himself. He donated all the items collected to MHS. Pictured here, in front of the Cat Enclosure at GLOBAL PET FOODS, are Josh and Lily with the large bag of doggie and kitty items they dropped off at GLOBAL PET FOODS. Thank you, Josh. Your parents should be very proud of you!
Page 9 STARLIGHT SOIREE 2018 Our annual Fundraising Gala took place on Sept 21. The beautiful Banquet Hall was filled up with MHS Friends. Thanks to everyone who attended, and of course to the Donors of all the Gift Items for the event. It was a very successful event. WINSTON the ONE-EYED CAT was our MYSTERIOUS GUEST! He certainly stole the show and the audiences found his rescue story very inspiring. Our new game WHEEL of FORTUNE attracted a crowd. We had over 60 items for SILENT AUCTION from Autographed collectibles to Art Prints, from Jewellery to Appliances... The winning bidders were very happy with the 'great deal" they received! Our "MHS Movie" had its debut. The 15-minute video tells WHO WE ARE and WHAT WE DO. The Performances of Magic, Pan Flute Playing and Singing were all amazing. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the event. Hope to see everyone again next year!
Page 10 COMPASSIONATE LIVING VEGAN CREAM CARROT SOUP INGREDIENTS 2 to 3 large carrots (chopped small) 1 onion (chopped small) 1 teaspoon fresh ginger (minced) 1 1/2 teaspoon curry powder 1 3/4 cup vegetable broth 1 (14-ounce) can coconut milk Salt to taste THANK YOU to our SPONSORS PREPARATION Add the carrots, onions, ginger, and curry powder to a soup pot and cover with the vegetable broth. Simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, until carrots are soft. Allow to cool slightly, and then puree in a blender, working in batches if needed. Return to the heat and stir in coconut milk until well combined. Season generously with sea salt, to taste. Serve hot or chill until cold. This carrot soup will thicken as it cools, so if eating this vegan carrot soup cold, you may want to add a bit extra liquid before serving. HUMOUR TIME THANK YOU To all of those who contributed articles to this issue. A big vote of thanks to all of our volunteers, foster parents, donors, and sponsors
