2 A 70 years story We are a public health Institution, founded in 1941, belonging to the National Public Health Service. The Institute is a technical-scientific body of the Ministry of Health and Regions. It is a dynamic entity with a flexible organisational model able to satisfy public health citizen needs.

3 Our mission Our mission is to ensure human health, providing appropriate response to public health needs, through scientific knowledge and expertise on food safety, animal health and welfare, control and prevention of transmittable animal diseases, including zoonoses, support to food production.

4 Our belief We strongly believe in sovernational approach to the protection of human and animal health and welfare. We acknowledge the role of animals in contributing to human physical, mental, and social well-being.

5 Our strategy We work to build a common culture, to assure human-animal-environment health and safe relationships, whereas animal welfare animal health food safety are part of a sustainable integrated system.

10 Mainly funded by: - Italian Government - European programmes Research - Surveillance in veterinary public health and risk analysis in food production and consumption; - New analytical and diagnostic methods; - vaccines, new generation immune-stimulants and diagnostic kits; - accreditation and certification of laboratories and veterinary public health services, including information systems for the management of emergencies and prophylaxis campaigns; - new methods for environmental control to protect human, fish and other wild animals; - animal welfare.

11 We want to fulfil the new OIE mandate, and in particular: To provide services to the OIE, in particular within the region, in support of the implementation of OIE policies and seek for collaboration with OIE Reference Laboratories; To propose or develop methods and procedures that facilitate harmonisation of international standards and guidelines; To carry out and coordinate scientific and technical studies in collaboration with other centres, laboratories or organisations; To collect, process, analyse, publish and disseminate data and information; To provide scientific and technical training to personnel from OIE Member Countries; To identify and maintain existing expertise, in particular within its region; To establish and maintain a network with other OIE Collaborating Centres designated for the same specialty, and should the need arise, with Collaborating Centres in other disciplines

December 2012 The prize was awarded in the section Humanitarian and Environmental Impact Award, for the implementation of a technological tool able to analyse more than 1 billion records annually and expand research for effective control and prevention of diseases

25 Use of ABMs to assess dairy cow welfare To identify relevant ABMs and map their contribution to a measure of the overall welfare of dairy cows; To determine whether relevant ABMs are already collected in the field; To validate the selected ABMs; To collect ABMs from a large number of dairy herds and submit this data to the EFSA; To analyse the collated data and evaluate its usefulness for quantitative welfare risk assessment. 28 Shelter quality IZSAM/05/10/RC Aim: develop innovative and efficient tools for the control and management of stray dog and cat populations in urban areas The project started in September 2011 and it is divided into four main Work Packages that will be fulfilled in a 24 months period. Financed by the Italian Ministry of Health

29 Work package #1 Development of a model to quantify and describe stray dog population on urban territory and identification of the causes undergoing this phenomenon Work package #2 Development of a protocol for dog welfare assessment in longterm shelters using animal-based indicators Work package #3 Development of a dog shelter Quality Management Model according to high standards of animal welfare Work package #4 Development of an information system for stray cat population management 29 29

30 Technological systems for dog population control and management IZSAM 01/11 RC Work package #1 Feasibility study for the development of innovative contraceptive solutions for the domestic dog Work package #2 Pilot study for the development of a genetic profile database of a controlled dog population Work package #3 Development of a new dog identification application for portable devices, and of a new architectural model for the Canine National Database. 31 Patagonia Express Project Aim: behavioural assessment of male dogs before and after chemical (zinc gluconate) and surgical sterilization in Puerto Natales, Chile. 24 months project, started in May 2011 Financed by the Italian Ministry of Health

32 PETWHEELFARE project Companion animal movements: impact on public health and animal welfare Aim: study trade flows of pet dogs entering Italy, and know which are the main countries of origin. At the same time, surveys will help to acquire knowledge on the health and welfare status of local dog populations, especially considering dogs housed in rescue and commercial shelters.

33 Animal traceability is an important tool in helping to guarantee animal health. IZSAM developed a system to improve dog I&R: a web-based-application to manage dog registers. This information system allows to connect databases through web services, making an integrated and complete system, without changing the pre-existing platforms.
