Paint Apply a thin, uniform coat, in a circular overlapping motion starting at the center and working outward. Do not scrub. Dry Allow to dry thoroughly on skin (approximately 2 3 minutes). 3 Effective 3M DuraPrep surgical solution eliminates the need for a time consuming traditional scrub by combining two proven, broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents: alcohol for fast kill and fast drying (2 3 minutes on skin), and an iodophor for persistence in a water-insoluble film. Efficacy studies have proven that 3M DuraPrep solution: Dries to a water-insoluble film that resists washing away by blood and saline. In vitro, 3M DuraPrep solution kills major pathogens in one minute.* In vivo, 3M DuraPrep solution achieves better than 99% microbial kill in just two minutes on the abdomen.* Effectively kills antibiotic-resistant bacteria (in vitro), a growing problem in hospitals. 3,4 (Note: 70% of bacteria causing nosocomial infections are resistant to at least one commonly prescribed antibiotic 5 ). Is more effective in a shorter period of time (in vitro) than the leading aqueous iodophor solution against gentamicin-resistant and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). Enterococci are the third leading cause of surgical wound infection according to the CDC 2. Kills methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and S. epidermidis (MRSE), in one minute (in vitro).* Enhances drape adhesion to help assure that the sterile surface is not being compromised by incise drape lift. *In clinical practice, however, 3M DuraPrep solution is flammable until dry (2 3 minutes on skin). Attention to preventing pooling is essential with any alcohol product. Enhanced Drape Adhesion Establishing and maintaining a sterile surface, via a skin prep and incise drape, is important because skin cannot be sterilized. Despite the most careful and rigorous disinfection, bacteria will grow during surgery. By definition, a skin surface covered by a sterile incise drape has less bacteria at the beginning of surgery than a skin surface that has only been disinfected. If a drape lifts, the sterile surface is lost. Instruments, gloves and sponges that come in contact with the skin surface around the wound can facilitate the migration of bacteria into the wound. 8 A study by Alexander et al. demonstrated that the infection rate was significantly higher in patients when the incise drape lifted from the skin during an operation. 9 In addition, models of bacterial wound contamination have shown that a smaller bacterial inoculum (10 2 ) is required to infect a wound with an implant than one without an implant (10 6 ). 10 Therefore, it is crucial to minimize the sources of bacterial contamination, including the skin, especially for high-risk patients. 3M DuraPrep solution is water-insoluble and resists wash-off by blood and saline. A study by Roberts et al. demonstrates that 3M DuraPrep solution significantly improves drape adhesion compared to a traditional iodophor paint and scrub. 1 3M DuraPrep solution allows the drape to adhere securely to the wound edge and helps to maintain a sterile surface throughout surgery.

The 8630C large-size applicator (26 ml) covers an area from neck to groin and is appropriate for procedures that include thoracic and CV, spine, total hip and knee, C-section, and major abdominal surgeries. The 8635C mid-size applicator (6 ml) covers at least an 8"x10" area, which is ideal for procedures requiring less coverage such as angiography, head and neck procedures, foot and hand procedures.

Isopropyl alcohol is a moderate eye irritant. If product gets into eyes, flush immediately with water. Avoid using in ears or on mucous membranes.
