2 DF-AH-001v3 revised January 2015 Page 2 of 6 MEDICAL DIRECTIVE FOR ROUTINE VACCINATIONS AND TREATMENTS FOR DAIRY CATTLE *Observe all withholdings on meat and milk after administration of vaccines or medications. See labels for withhold information. Age Vaccine/Treatment Given Birth (As soon as Possible) Generously apply iodine to navel. Remove the calf from the cow as soon as possible. Give 2-4 quarts of warm colostrum (minimum) within 4 hours of birth (as soon as possible). Do not give colostrum from a Johne s positive cow to any calf. Do not freeze colostrum from a Johne s positive cow. If the cow is Johne s negative and gives more colostrum than is needed by the calf, freeze the extra first milking colostrum for future use. If a cow s colostrum does not seem adequate in appearance or otherwise unsatisfactory, feed the calf colostrum that has previously been frozen or a colostrum replacer. Do not put colostrum in a microwave to thaw, use only hot water to thaw. If the calf is unable to nurse a nipple bottle, contact experienced farm personnel to give colostrum through an esophageal feeder. Administer BO-SE Administer Vitamin E, A, &D 1 month or younger Dehorn and tattoo. Dehorning at any age requires the use of a local anesthetic such as Lidocaine. Additionally Banamine (1cc per 100 pounds of body weight) should be given intravenously the day of dehorning. If any complications are noted, notify the University Veterinarian immediately. 2 months (weaning) Vaccinate with 7-way clostridium with fenbendazole 4 12 months Between 4-12 months of age all heifer calves will be vaccinated for Brucellosis (Bangs) with RB-51 vaccine and will have supernumerary teats removed by the University Veterinarian. (Refer to the SOP on removal of supernumerary teats.)

3 DF-AH-001v3 revised January 2015 Page 3 of 6 4 months Vaccinate with MLV containing IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV Booster 7-way clostridium 5 months Booster MLV containing IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV Booster L5 plus lepto hardjo bovis 6 months Vaccinate with Salmonella SRP. This vaccine can be given at 5 months but cannot be given at the same time as the RB-51 (Brucellosis) vaccine. Also, no more than two vaccines for gram negative organisms can be administered at the same time. Gram negative organisms include Brucella, Lepto, Salmonella, and E. Coli. 7 months Booster Salmonella SRP 4-6 weeks after initial dose Vaccinate with Rabies Vaccine months Apply parasiticides/wormers Give a rumen magnet Vaccinate with MLV containing IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV Vaccinate with 7-way clostridium 4-6 weeks later Vaccinate with Salmonella SRP Heifers Confirmed Pregnant Vaccinations 8 weeks prior to calving Vaccinate with E. Coli mastitis Vaccinate with Rota-Coronavius, Clostridium Perfringens Type C, and E. Coli (scours vaccine) Follow above vaccination recommendations for 8 weeks prior to calving (follow the above vaccination and treatment schedule through to the next dry off) Dry treat all quarters with approved dry off tubes Vaccinate with Rabies Vaccine CONTINUE PROCEDURES ON SUBSEQUENT PREGNANCIES RECOMMENDATIONS WILL BE CHANGED ONLY AFTER CONSULTATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY VETERINARIAN. The chart below is a repeat of the above protocol using product trade names in the place of vaccine type. Trade names used may vary depending on availability.
