1 PENDLE HILL HIGH SCHOOL HSC Biology Assessment Task 1- Research Task Assessment Task No: 1 Date issued: Wednesday Due Date: Monday Weighting: 10% Total Marks 50 SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Each student will have completed the assessment task by Monday Hardcopies must be handed to Miss Boon during school hours (8.30am-3.30pm). submissions must be sent to the following account: Amanda.boon1@det.nsw.edu.au (assignments received via after 4pm will incur a late penalty) ABSENCE/LATE SUBMISSION Late submission: For students in year 11 and 12, the penalty is 40% for the first calendar day and 20% for each calendar day thereafter. The penalty includes weekend and public holidays. Absence: if you are from school on the day the task is to be completed, you are required on your return to school to provide a medical certificate/documentation to the front office. 2 Topic: 9.4 The Search for Better Health- 3c Identify the role of antibiotics in the management of infectious disease 3B Gather and process information to trace the historical development of our understanding of the cause and prevention of 3C Identify data sources, gather, process and analyse information from secondary sources to describe one named infectious disease in terms of its: cause, transmission, host response, major symptoms, treatment, prevention and control. 3D Process information from secondary sources to discuss problems relating to antibiotic resistance 6b Identify causes of non-infectious disease using an example from each of the following categories: inherited disease, nutritional deficiencies and environmental disease. 6B Gather information from secondary sources to analyse and present information about the occurrence, symptoms, cause, treatment/management of named non-infectious disease. 3 Task 1: Infectious Disease (33 marks) Part A Antibiotic Resistance (8 marks) i. Define antibiotics and identify the role of antibiotics in the management of infectious disease. ii. Antibiotic resistance is the result of an evolutionary process. Research and then explain how human beings have had an impact on diversity of bacteria (in relation to the development of superbugs which are antibiotic resistant). Part B Malaria (25 marks) Malaria is an example of an infectious disease. Our understanding of has changed throughout history. Research information from secondary resources and complete the following: Construct a table to trace how our understanding of the cause and prevention of has developed throughout history. Control vii. prevention Task 2: Non Infectious Disease Report (12 marks) Your task is to write a report on non infectious diseases. The causes of non infectious diseases can be classified into 3 categories. In your report you must include the following information: i. Define what is meant by non-infectious disease ii. Identify and describe the 3 categories used to classify non-infectious diseases. iii. Research the following non infectious diseases and provide a brief of each. Scurvy Melanoma Cystic fibrosis In your be sure to include the cause, symptoms, occurrence and treatment/management of the disease. Bibliography (3 marks) You must include a list of all sources of your information. You must complete your bibliography in the specified format (refer to attached document) You should include a range of resources, (internet, textbook, magazines, journal articles etc) Presentation (2 marks) Work should be presented neatly; typed, stapled and submitted in a plastic sleeve.
