By Mike Denholm, Anexa FVC Morrinsville Veterinarian Last summer, spore counts were excessively high causing wide spread Facial Eczema outbreaks across the Waikato. Ensuring adequate Zinc supplementation is key to prevention. We have already tested herds this season by checking blood Zinc levels, and this has shown a wide range of levels even when full dosing has been provided. The protective range for Zinc levels in the blood is above 18umol/L. Anything under that is likely to be ineffective and your herd could suffer liver damage, causing further problems throughout the year. Some herds have had up to 80% of their cows with inadequate levels. We have intervened and modified the dosing accordingly to ensure protective levels are met. Unfortunately, this is commonly seen with Zinc dosing, particularly when Zinc is provided through water treatment. We have also seen inadequate Zinc levels in herds that drench with Zinc oxide as well. Water intake depends on rainfall and individual cow risk factors like age, milk production, pecking order in the herd and walking distances, so water based Zinc supplementation becomes quite unpredictable. If you are using water treated with Zinc to protect your cows against Facial Eczema, it is best to check your Zinc levels two to three weeks after you start full Zinc dose rates. Call your Vet to arrange blood samples to be taken from your cows to check they are getting enough. Last season was a terrible year for Facial Eczema and we don t want it to happen again! Try to make sure that your cows don t have access to untreated (no Zinc added) water. Make sure there are no water leaks. Use a flavour like aniseed, caramello or apple to encourage the cows to drink the Zinc treated water. Check the weight of your cows and the product you are using and work out a dose rate - your Vet can help. Measure the amount of Zinc you are adding every time you add it- no guesstimates!. Dose the cows daily. Start your Zinc water trough treatment early to prime your troughs before Facial Eczema season. Start the cows on a half dose of Zinc to prime your troughs and get cows used to the taste of Zinc If you have missed the boat you can prime your untreated water troughs now - talk to your Vet about how best to do this. MARCH 2017 NEWSLETTER 9 things to check if you are using water treated with Zinc to protect your cows against Facial Eczema: Remember to: Think Facial Eczema think ALL ZINC PURCHASES OVER $500 between 1st December st March 2017 enters you into the Great Summer Shout Buy your Summer zinc supplies from Anexa FVC and go in the monthly draw to WIN a great Summer Shout valued at $150 during January/February/March PLUS be in to win a $500 Hunting and Fishing Voucher when purchasing Faceguard. 6 Maximising your potential Our Herd Health Advisor Veterinarians can help you to achieve your performance and production goals. We understand that your productivity relies not only on the performance of individual cows, but on the herd as a whole. Minimising herd level incidence of disease, maximising herd reproduction and monitoring performance are important to your sustainability as a dairy farmer. Clinical Vet We provide a tailored service to suit you and your farm. We offer herd health advisory services. Personalised animal health plans We work together to formulate a unique, annual plan for your herd, helping you to achieve targets in your herd s reproductive, mastitis and general animal health performance. You Maximised Herd Potential Tailored Herd Health Programme Herd Health Advisor Veterinarians Staff training and seminars The skills of farm staff play an important role in improving herd health. We provide a range of seminars throughout the season, focussing on various aspects of animal health management. We can also run on-farm training, specifically tailored to your staff s needs. All our workshops have a practical emphasis. Reproductive management We use the DairyNZ InCalf programme as the framework for improving your herd s reproductive performance. This provides a structured approach that is tailored to managing your herd s reproductive health. Condition Scoring We have a large number of vets trained as Accredited Body Condition Scoring Assessors. We offer a service whereby we can condition score your herd as either an one off visit, or on a regular basis. This provides you with valuable information for feed management, dry off decisions and reproduction management. Contact your local vet to discuss this service further. Milk quality We support the SmartSAMM vision, that all NZ dairy farmers achieve their goals around mastitis and the reduction in bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC). This involves improved identification, recording and lowering the incidence of clinical mastitis. We use the SmartSAMM Gap Calculator to estimate the increased milksolids and dollar value for your herd, should your goals be achieved. Lameness solutions Rather than just focusing on the individual lame cow, we can help you to identify the specific areas on your farm contributing to the high incidence of lameness, and train your staff to prevent and treat lameness, using the Healthy Hoof model. Our vets are Fonterra accredited advanced mastitis providers: We offer a two-tiered approach to help you to refine your herd s milk quality. Grade busting If your herd is grading and you need emergency help to stop this, we offer a grade busting service. A team of technicians and an experienced vet can be on-farm within 36 hours to rapid mastitis test the herd and stop you grading. Milking assessment If you have more insidious milk quality concerns, we are able to develop a specific plan for your herd, based on data analysis of your mastitis and herd test records; bacterial isolates from milk cultures; your BTSCC history and of course your milk quality goals. A visit at milking time allows our vets to take detailed measurements of teat condition, milking times and cow and machine interactions. Whole farm systems, production management and nutritional advice Andy Collier, Veterinarian and Intelact consultant, has 23 years experience as a Farm advisor. Katrina Roberts, Margaret Perry and Hamish Clare are also Veterinarians and Intelact Consultants. Several other vets are trained in farm systems and nutrition. Our farm systems advisors offer structured advice specific to your farming operation and your goals
