Gluck Equine Research Center is pleased to announce that the THIRD TEX CAUTHEN FARRIER / VETERINARIAN / RESEARCHER SEMINAR will be held in the Auditorium of the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center, Sunday, January 20 th, 2019, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm or thereabouts. The theme of this Third Seminar will be Farrier/Veterinarian/Researcher Interactions, with the goal of optimizing interactions between Farriers, Veterinarians and Researchers and a focus on bone changes in the hoof and the overall area of reducing musculoskeletal injuries. The morning starts with a welcome to the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Center by the Director, Dr. David Horohov. Dr. Horohov s welcoming remarks will be followed by an overview of the Dangers of being a Thoroughbred Jockey presented by Mr. Sandy Hawley, a Hall of Fame Jockey, followed by Dr. Rob Holland, who will overview the area of developing diagnostic technologies, including the area of blood cytokine evaluation being pioneered at the Gluck Equine Research Center. Dr. Horohov will then start the scientific sessions with a presentation on blood cytokines as markers or indicators of potential musculoskeletal injury and hoof related pathology, which hoof pathology theme will next be picked up by Mr. Michael Savoldi, and then further developed by Dr. Laura Kennedy of the UK Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The morning s session will then close with Dr. Raul Bras of the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital presenting a clinician s summary of the take home messages for farriers, veterinarians and researchers from the morning s presentations. Lunch will be from Noon to 1 pm, most generously hosted by Mr. Doug Watkins and Breeder s Farrier Supply of Lexington. After lunch Dr. Bras will re-open the program with an overview entitled life (of the horse) after tenotomy and the potential for optimal outcomes and therapeutic approaches to less than optimal outcomes. We will then next be privileged to have Dr. Simon Curtis, PhD, FWCF, Hon. Assoc., RCVS, of Newmarket, England join us for a presentation on factors affecting the shape and function of the hoof. Then, following the afternoon coffee break, Mr. Rick Snead will expand further on biomechanics and joint pathology as it relates to hoof mechanics, followed by Mr. Steve Stanley who will present on offset knees in relationship to hoof pathology and correction of same. The program will then wrap up with a round table discussion reviewing the presentations and the take home messages, chaired by Dr. Rob Holland. The guests of honor will be Mr. Doug Cauthen, Mr. Kerry Cauthen and Mr. Steve Cauthen; the organizing committee is chaired by Mr. Hans Albrecht and includes Dr. David Horohov, Dr. Raul Bras, Dr. Pedro DePedro, Dr. Fernanda Camargo, Mr. Jacob Machin and Dr. Thomas Tobin. As previously, the entire seminar will be videotaped and made available on the Gluck Equine Research Center website and it will also be republished by the American Farriers Association Communications Committee on their internet newsletter/eblast. 5 THE THIRD TEX CAUTHEN SEMINAR, SUNDAY, JANUARY 20 th, 2019, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Page 5 of 9 SPEAKERS AND SUMMARY BIOGRAPHIES Dr. David Horohov is Chair of the University of Kentucky Department of Veterinary Science and Director of the Gluck Equine Research Center. His research program focuses on the identification and characterization of equine cytokines and their role in protective and pathologic immune responses. His research group has cloned, sequenced and expressed a number of cytokine genes from the horse and developed assays for their detection. Current research focuses on the developing immune response of foals and how it relates to their susceptibility to infection. Dr. Robert E. Holland, Jr. DVM, PSC, graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine in From Mississippi he went to The Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center of the University of Kentucky were he obtained his PhD in Equine Virology in While studying at UK Dr. Holland also served as a regulatory veterinarian with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, seeing horse racing from both sides of the regulatory fence. Dr. Holland has consulted globally with countries and jurisdictions to contain and prevent spread of disease, including with the USDA and many state veterinarians and is well versed in how to make your horse healthy again. Mr. Michael Savoldi is Professor Emeritus and Resident Farrier at the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center and Professor of Farrier Science, Animal & Veterinary Science, California State Polytechnic University. He was also chair of the American Farrier s Association Equine Research Committee ( ) and named American Farrier s Association educator of the year in He is an internationally known author and researcher and is currently the director of the Equine Research Center in Shandon, California. Dr. Pedro De Pedro has been an Equine Internal Medicine practitioner in Lexington for over seven years. In Fall 2016, he joined the faculty at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine where he teaches Large Animal (Equine) Internal Medicine. He is working with research groups in different areas focusing on performance horses. He serves as a veterinary consultant for equine non-profit programs in Lexington and travels to the area frequently to work with a selection of clients and for data collection. Dr. Laura Kennedy is a native of Michigan and trained in Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University, graduating with her DVM in She was employed as a resident veterinarian at the Hanover Shoe Farms, a large commercial Standardbred breeding farm, before pursuing a residency and board certification in anatomic pathology at Texas A&M University. Dr. Kennedy has been with the Department of Veterinary Science at UK since 2007 and in partnership with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has established a program for the systematic and comprehensive examination of racing fatalities.

He graduated from Ross University Veterinary School in 2005, completed his clinical year at Auburn and then interned in surgery at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, staying on in the Podiatry Department and becoming a Certified Journeyman Farrier of the American Farriers Association. Dr. Bras practices throughout the Americas and Europe and is committed to the bettering of veterinary-farrier relationships. He is active in the AAEP, NEAEP, AAPF, AFA, and industry associations. In 2015 he was inducted to the International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame, honoring veterinarians who have made contributions to proper hoof care for horses. Mr. Hans Albrecht is a West Coast native who trained in farriery at The Pacific Farrier School in the late 1980s and thereafter taught farriery at CAL Poly Pomona University for a number of years. He has been active nationally and internationally, having lectured, consulted and shod horses to win widely throughout the United States and also in Ireland and England, including lecturing in German at the Hanover University Veterinary School and shoeing horses to win in Dubai, Doha and elsewhere. Since the mid-1990s he has been based in Central Kentucky. Dr. Simon Curtis is currently the Immediate Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Farriers ( ). He is a Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers by examination. A fourth generation farrier based in Newmarket, he has been a farrier since He has lectured and demonstrated farriery in 16 countries on four continents, has published two textbooks about farriery and been published in numerous journals. He was awarded an Honorary Associateship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and was inducted into The Farriers Hall of Fame at the Kentucky Derby Museum in Dr. Fernanda Camargo took her DVM at Londrina State University, Parana, Brazil in 2010 and her PhD in Equine Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology at the Veterinary Science Department, University of Kentucky in Dr. Camargo oversees, coordinates and provides leadership for the 4-H Horse Program in Kentucky. Her work provides learning opportunities for the youth through camps, clinics, seminars, the State Horse Show, the State Horse Contest, and the State Horse Judging Contest. Dr. Camargo overviews program content, communication among leaders, agents and parents, serve as liaison with the sites where the events are held, monitors budget issues and ensures that the rules are clear. Mr. Rick Snead, Dynamic Shoeing LLC, has been shoeing horses for over 15 years. A graduate of the Alabama School of Horseshoeing, his passion is therapeutic equine podiatry. Rick has continued his education and trained with Dr. Ric Redden at the International Equine Podiatry Center in Versailles, KY, and also with Dr. Mansmann at NC Equine Podiatry and Rehabilitation. Rick is an instructor at the International Equine Podiatry Center and a consultant at NC College of Veterinary Medicine. Over the years Steve has worked as Head Farrier on a number of leading Kentucky Thoroughbred and Standardbred farms, shoeing a number of World Champion trotters and pacers. Steve has also written extensively on the practice of farriery and various aspects of hoof anatomy, hoof disease, lameness and therapeutic shoeing including for Hoofbeats Magazine and he has served on the Board of Directors of the Standardbred harness Horsemen s Association since Dr. Thomas Tobin is a Professor at the Gluck Equine Research Center where he works on the synthesis and certification of certified reference standards and internal standards for equine therapeutic medication regulation. His accomplishments include writing Drugs and the Performance Horse 1981, and publishing the first plasma threshold for Lasix; introducing ELISA tests to horseracing; patented Diclazuril as the first FDA approved treatment for Equine Protozoal Myelitis; and publishing a unique probabilistic mechanism for the Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome (MRLS). Desmond Sanford Hawley is one of the greatest jockeys in Thoroughbred racing with 31,455 mounts, 6,449 wins and 18 riding titles at Woodbine Racetrack. Mr. Hawley received the Lou Marsh Trophy in 1973 and 1976 as Canada s top athlete and was decorated with the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honour. He was inducted into the Canadian Racing Hall of Fame in 1986, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1992 and Canada s Sports Hall of Fame in In the 1973 season, he became the first jockey to ever win 500 races in one year, breaking Bill Shoemaker's record. The Sandy Hawley Award is presented every year by the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame to an individual who best exemplifies a dedication to the community.
