We are happy to inform you about SWEVET s new cooperation with Improve International in Sweden. Karlslunde Animal Hospital in Denmark have worked together very successfully with Improve to deliver these courses over the last 3 years for Danish veterinarians. We have received very good feedback from the participants; some of which are shown on pages 4 and 5 of this brochure. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to be put in touch with a vet who has already attended one of these programmes. Improve International, working in cooperation with Swevet is now offering the same concept for Swedish veterinarians. The two-year modular programmes cover a wide variety of veterinary techniques and are ideal for less experienced and more senior veterinarians. The surgery programme includes 4 practical sessions per year with training on cadavers in order to apply the previously taught theory. The monthly modules have been organised in order to cause as little inconvenience to the daily practice and family life as possible. Together with the conference and high-quality practical facilities, we can offer a superb standard of postgraduate training for vets in practice, delivered by skilled lecturers from abroad. The demands for veterinary expert knowledge are increasing as we are meeting challenges from more knowledgeable clients who will complain quickly if dissatisfied. Therefore postgraduate training and the recording of time spent in further development will be very important parameters in the future. Working alongside the European School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ESVPS), Improve International is able to offer participants the opportunity to register for a Certificate qualification in either surgery or medicine (see page 3 for further information). The medicine programme consists of 20 taught modules which cover all of the major body systems. The surgery programme has been split into two parts, with part one covering soft-tissue surgery in the first year and part two in the second year covering orthopaedic and spinal surgery. If you want to upgrade your professional skills as many other vets throughout Europe have, we recommend that you register for one of these exciting programmes. 3 ESVPS Since 2003 when the first General Practitioners Certificate programme was launched, over 570 Veterinary Surgeons have achieved an ESVPS General Practitioner Certificate in one of the 15 subjects currently offered including these Small Animal Medicine and Small Animal Surgery programmes. Contact: Tel: Kay Watson, ESVPS Company Director, tells us a bit more about the accreditation and exams: Over the past seven years we have seen changes in the profession and the need for obtainable, balanced postgraduate qualifications has never been greater. The General Practitioner Certificates were designed to meet the needs of busy veterinary practitioners wanting to gain a post graduate qualification without having to take excessive time out of their busy working lives. The uniqueness of the GPCert is that through the Improve International modular programmes, candidates are given structured taught sessions from experienced professionals which the final examination is based on. Candidates are required to complete further study in their own time as well as submitting various pieces of course work. All the Improve International General Practitioner Certificates modular programmes are accredited by ESVPS. The course syllabus, learning objectives and tutors on the course must meet the strict ESVPS accreditation guidelines before a course is launched. In addition to the ESVPS accreditation, a number of the GPCert programmes have been validated by the University of the West of England at M level. To date examinations have been held in the UK, Norway, Italy, Denmark, Spain, Southern Ireland and Portugal, and we will be launching the first General Practitioner Certificate training programmes in Sweden late autumn With a further 180 candidates due to sit the General Practitioner Certificates this year, these certificates are continuing to grow in popularity and are recognised within the profession as a certificate worthy of achieving. MY GPCERT WAS A GREAT STEP FOR ME BETWEEN PRIVATE PRACTICE AND MY RESIDENCY AND I FEEL THE COURSES ARE A VERY GOOD, PRACTICAL ALTERNATIVE TO THE RCVS CERTIFICATES BEING OFFERED AT PRESENT! 4 Stories from SAM Vibeke Lassen DVM, Odsherred Animal Hospital Delegate on the General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine I had wished for a chance to upgrade my knowledge in internal medicine in small animals for several years, since it is my main area of interest. There was no doubt in my mind that the General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Medicine was the right thing for me to do, and so far I have not been disappointed. The course is planned to take the delegate through an almost complete update on all aspects of internal medicine, but in a way that is orientated towards clinical practice. It has made it possible for me to take home new knowledge and use it instantly in my practice. The level of the lectures are generally high and the speakers are highly qualified. Many of the modules are brush up on subjects I hadn t thought about since Vet School, but use everyday - like Clinical Pharmacology. None of the sessions have been irrelevant and I have been looking forward to every session. It has been nice to go through the course with the same classmates every month, and to have been given the opportunity of networking and to exchange experience and knowledge. I strongly recommend the course to every veterinarian in small animal practice who wants to update their know-how on internal medicine. Dorthe Hansen DVM, PettVett Bergen, Norway Delegate on the General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Surgery This is an outstanding opportunity to improve your surgical understanding and decision-making. The course is ideal for network building between colleagues with similar interests. 4

5 and SAS delegates Birgitte Grann Greve DVM, CEO, ECVO Panelist Delegate on the General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Surgery Birgitte, Norwegian by birth, has 20 years managerial experience in small animal medicine. She initiated the development of PetVett, a group now consisting of five small animal clinics in Norway. Birgitte has particular interest in and experience within ophthalmology, orthopedics and general surgery. I have with great satisfaction attended the General Practitioners Certificate in small animal surgery at Karlslunde Animal Hospital for two years. The overall course professionalism, the dedicated lecturers, the fabulous hospitality and the possibility given to perform in-depth specialization within certain areas of general surgery has been a good experience. Lars Bistrup DVM, Avedøre Animal Clinic Delegate on the General Practitioner Certificate in Small Animal Suregery After passing my GPCert exam in Small Animal Surgery in September 2011, I look back on a course that completely met my expectations; a targeted solution for the small animal general practitioner with a special interest in surgery. A monthly course session, occasional 2-day courses with practical exercises and general studying fitted perfectly into my everyday life. The course has given me the practical tools to improve my general level and made me feel more comfortable when performing more specialized procedures. After the course my decision-making and surgical planning are definitely more based on scientific evidence instead of usual procedures. This issue also applies to advising owners. During the course we had many interesting professional discussions, much of the course being highly interactive and I have expanded my network of colleagues. I received lots of valuable advice in regard to common everyday matters such as choice of materials, instruments etc. The enthusiasm of the lecturers and organizers has indeed been inspiring in itself, and I recommend all my fellow practitioners wishing to improve their abilities in surgery to sign up for the course. 5

10 Speaker faculty We know that using very best speakers ensures an incredible learning experience. Here you can meet some of those speakers, and read some of their comments on the programmes. NOTE: Speakers may be changed. SURGERY Alasdair Hotston-Moore MA VetMB CertSAC CertVR CertSAS CertMed MRCVS Bath Veterinary Referrals Alasdair is currently Head of Referral Surgery at Bath Veterinary Referrals and holds an Honorary Senior Lectureship at the University of Bristol. I have been speaking on the Improve Small Animal Surgery modular programmes for several years and continue to enjoy doing so. This format is par-ticularly enjoyable as a speaker because of the feeling of comraderie that develops amongst each cohort of delegates. This leads to an atmosphere that is both workman-like ( we are all here because we want to learn ) and collegiate ( we are here to learn together ). Alison Moores BVSc(Hons) CertSAS DipECVS MRCVS RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Soft Tissue) European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists The Improve modular surgical course is ideally suited to the veterinary surgeon with a strong interest in surgery and the motivation to significantly improve their knowledge, problem solving and surgical skills. As experienced clinicians and educators, who have usually worked in both first opinion and referral practice, the lecturers aim to impart information learnt from many years of managing soft tissue cases. I recognize that it is important to provide this information in a way that is relevant to the practicing veterinary surgeon. My teaching methods include investigating clinical cases in a problem-based approach e.g. the dysuric dog; teaching thoracicsurgery based on a series of radiographs and clinical case scenarios; providing general tips on how to perform a surgical procedure or improve technique; and giving opinions on the recent literature. The emphasis is always on sharing my experience, backed up by case examples and practical sessions, rather than just listing information that could easily be found in a textbook. The modular course means that delegates quickly become immersed in the course, are keen to ask questions and are able to get feedback on cases they have been managing as the course goes along Hannes Bergmann DrVetMed DipECVS MRCVS Vets Now Referrals Swindon Hannes Bergmann qualified from Vienna University in 2001 and completed an internship at Hannover University. Delegates will be able to carry out self-reflection based on the course materials they have received. Ancillary Materials Delegates are given a list of recommended texts to support their study. In addition, all delegates enrolling for the course will receive a leading textbook in either medicine or surgery. Delegates enrolled on the small animal surgery course will receive supporting DVDs of key surgical procedures. Examination IMPORTANT NOTE: There is no requirement for delegates on these courses to undertake the ESVPS examination. Delegates may simply choose to undertake the course in the knowledge that it will aid them in improving their expertise and skills. For this reason, delegates will not be required to enrol for the relevant examination until the end of February This allows delegates the opportunity to fully understand what is involved before they commit to the examination. A representative from ESVPS will talk with each group prior to the final examination enrolment date. Fees are structured in two parts, with payment to Improve for the course itself and a separate payment to ESVPS for the examination. Candidates for the GPCert examinations will be required to complete one case report of a maximum of 2,500 words in length each. Full guidelines in relation to this component of the examination will be supplied during the course. Candidates will also be required to sit a final written examination comprising multiple-choice questions taken from across the whole syllabus. Please note: The final examination for each of the two subjects will take place on one day in October Quality Control The Academic Board of ESVPS is responsible for controlling standards across both the syllabus and other components of the courses, which lead to the GPCerts. It ensures that course content fulfils the criteria for an accredited course and also monitors the examination systems and processes. Similarly, the examinations are the responsibility of ESVPS and any questions about them should be directed to ESVPS. All the courses in this brochure have been accredited by ESVPS and meet strict criteria in terms of taught material, approved speakers, set learning objectives and quality controls throughout the course.
