4 Why choose Improve International? Improve International was established in 1998 by a group of veterinary surgeons from across the UK to run Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for veterinary professionals. Our programmes utilise a combination of review lectures, case-based discussion and, where applicable, hands-on practical sessions. We are at the forefront of the modular training concept to help develop the skills and knowledge required in practice. We are an international organisation with head offices in the UK and Portugal and we are present in over 20 countries worldwide. We work on a regular basis with more than 500 veterinary specialists. 6 Introducing the General Practitioner Certificate Our training programmes allow you to immerse yourself in your chosen subject area, to truly challenge yourself and to gain the extra knowledge that puts you at the forefront of your field Since the launch of the first General Practitioner Certificates (GPCert) in 2003, over 3000 veterinary surgeons across Europe, and worldwide, have achieved a GPCert. The GPCert is designed to meet the needs of busy veterinary practitioners wanting to a gain a postgraduate qualification, but without having to take excessive time out of their busy working lives. The uniqueness of the GPCert modular training programmes are structured taught sessions from experienced academics. Whilst the GPCert is not a specialist qualification, on successful completion of the GPCert you will not only have gained valuable additional skills, but also the confidence and competence to use these skills and knowledge to enhance the value of your practice. Many have used the General Practitioner Certificate as a stepping stone to higher qualifications or have gone on to complete more than one GPCert. Each GPCert comprises: Taught sessions with accompanying notes Practical sessions where relevant to the subject Pre and post module online self assessment Preparation for end-of-programme assessments Independent study, including online components Support throughout your learning journey Our modular programmes have a duration of one to two years and are structured in theoretical and practical modules, with online support where appropriate. All of our speakers are recognised specialists of the European and/or American colleges. This will allow you to learn from some of the best in the world in each of the taught subjects. Our two leading programmes in Small Animal Medicine and Small Animal Surgery will allow you to obtain knowledge and skills in two core areas of small animal practice. The small animal medicine programme will cover all of the major body-systems, whilst the small animal surgery programme divides into a soft-tissue component in year one, and an orthopaedic/ spinal component in year two. The programmes will be delivered in Nicosia, Cyprus. 6

7 Course structure On the e-learning platform you will find the following resources: course notes clinical cases bibliographies scientific articles videos/ webinars access to the discussion forum During the theoretical modules the speaker will present lectures covering the learning objectives of the module and at the end of the day provide an interactive clinical case discussion. All practical sessions/ modules have a limited number of delegates ensuring that each individual has plenty of hands-on time and opportunity to practise the taught techniques. HOW THE MODULES WORK Pre-module Access to explanatory material through an e-learning platform; 5 MCQs and self-evaluation Module Theoretical sessions and/or practical sessions Webinars Post-module Recommended further reading 5 MCQs and knowledge assessment Attendance Certificate Webinars are online sessions with a duration of one hour. 7

8 Achieving the General Practitioner Certificate (GPCert) The GPCert is a standardised certification throughout Europe and therefore any veterinarian who obtains this certificate, regardless of the country in which it is examined, will be certain to have achieved a standard level of knowledge in that key area. The General Practitioner Certificate is the most popular middle tier qualification in Europe and it can be used as a stepping stone to higher education within the profession. Some successful candidates have used the General Practitioner Certificate qualification to go on to complete a higher degree and also complete a European Diploma in their specialist area. Most of the General Practitioner Certificates, including Small Animal Medicine and Small Animal Surgery, have been validated by Harper Adams University at a Postgraduate Certificate level. Exam Attend all course modules Independent Study Write 10 x case studies ( words) Write 1 case report (2500 words maximum) according to ESVPS exam guidelines. Sit a multiple choice exam (in Cyprus) General Practitioner Certificate 8
