1 VICAS Quality CVE 2012 Continuing education is about a lot more than getting the minimum 20 CVE credits needed to remain registered with the VCI. It is a way for individuals to improve their core skills and their understanding of the very fundamentals of veterinary medicine. This in turn has a direct effect on how we treat our patients and how we communicate with our clients. VICAS is committed to bringing the highest calibre of speakers to Ireland to deliver courses that are specifically tailored for the Irish veterinary profession.

3 Continuing education is about a lot more than getting the minimum 20 CVE credits needed to remain registered with the VCI. For 2012 we are again bringing our trademark quality and affordable veterinary CVE to different locations throughout the country:, Sligo, Limerick, Galway, Cork, Tralee and Waterford. The surgery modular course that began in 2011 is continuing this year with two orthopaedic surgery modules delivered by Eithne Comerford and Rob Petitt and two soft tissue modules delivered by Ronan Doyle. There will also be an additional Cutting Edge surgery day course in 2012, details of which will be available shortly. In addition to the surgery modules the other main theme for VICAS Quality CVE 2012 is clinical pathology. One taught module is complemented by a wet lab session which is to run on two separate dates. Understanding when to sample, what to sample and how to sample it will greatly improve your diagnostic skill set and will help broaden the scope of what general practitioners can hope to achieve in a normal practice setting. Producing this level of CVE for the Irish market is a big undertaking and it can not succeed without support. We are grateful for the continued support of our headline sponsor Hill s Pet Nutrition and our other sponsors. Clearly we also depend on support from Veterinary Ireland members as long as there is demand for regional and affordable CVE we will continue to provide it. So decide what interests you now, fill out the booking form now and send it today! Fintan Browne VICAS Chairperson In 2012 Hill s Pet Nutrition are proud to be entering the second year of a three year partnership programme with VICAS sponsoring CVE. This partnership aims to bring top quality, affordable CVE to vets in practice thereby supporting them in their aims of delivering the best veterinary care to their patients. Nutritional science has become more and more centre stage in small animal practice recently with the adoption of the WSAVA endorsed Every Pet, Every Time initiative. This highlights the importance of assessing your patient s nutritional status and making a specific recommendation, where appropriate, every time you see them. One product already receiving a lot of interest from vets and owners alike is Hill s Prescription Diet feline y/d. Launching at WSAVA World congress in April, this unique new product is formulated to manage hyperthyroidism in cats. This gives you an exciting alternative approach to the disease - and it really is as easy as feeding! For access to all of our on-line tools and resources including training, educational library and quickreco our recommendation tool, register at Tim Dobbins, Associate Veterinary Affairs Manager at Hill s Pet Nutrition

9 Clinical Pathology Wetlabs PETER O BRIEN This Wet Lab on Clinical Pathology will be available on 2 dates at Dogs Trust in. 10th July, , 8 CVE Credits 11th December, , 8 CVE Credits Wet Lab in Veterinary Clinical Pathology The objective of this laboratory is to focus on some key, specific, knowledge and practical skills for preparation and interpretation of the most common morphologic pathologies that are diagnosed and evaluated using microscopy in urinalysis, haematology, and cytology. The practitioner should learn to collect and prepare samples for analysis without significant artefact, and then to be able to make the most common diagnoses themselves. Smear evaluation of fine needle aspirates, washes, or tissue impressions will be highlighted for archetypical cases of a few dozen of the most-frequently-occurring, morphologic pathologies, including anaemia, superficial and deep swellings and masses, respiratory disease, internal organ disease, and body cavity and joint effusions. Practitioners will learn to capture and transmit diagnostic images of smears with simple, inexpensive digital cameras for assistance in evaluation. Peter will teach delegates how to get the most out of their practice laboratory and how to understand both the potential and the limitations of their equipment. Delegates are asked to bring their own practice microscopes along to the Clinical Pathology wetlabs.
