FUR MITES OF ТНЕ FAMILY МУОВПDАЕ (ACARINA; TROМEIDIFORMES) ВУ KiMIТO UCНIKAWA * and TSUNEAКI КОБАУАSНI ** ABSTRACT Binuncus (Binuncus) jaтesoni (Hiregaudar et Баl, 1956). Binuncus (Probinuncus) cynopterus Fain, 1975, Metabinuncus birтanicus Fain, 1976, Neoтyobia plurihospitalis Uchikawa, 1978, Hipposiderobia okinawaensis Uchikawa, 1976, Hipposiderobia sp. 1 (male) and sp. 2 (tritonymph), Ugandobia (Ugandobia) dissiтilis spec. поу., Pteracarus pusillus thailandensis sspec. поу., Pteracarus sp. (female), and Acanthophthirius (Myotiтyobia) scotophili spec. поу. were recorded as parasites of bats in Thailand. The males of В. (В.) jamesoni and М. birmanicus were described, and the male plesiotypes of these 2 species were designated. Morphological accounts of nymphal stages of В. (Р.) cynopterus, М. birmanicus, N. plurihospitalis and Hipposiderobia sp. were presented. Z USAMMENFASSUNG Binuncus (Binuncus) jamesoni (Hiregaudae et Баl, 1956), Binunczls (Probinuncus) cynopterus Fain, 1975, Metabinиncus birтanicus Fain, 1976, Neoтyobia plurihospitalis Uchikawa, 1978, Hipposiderobia okinawaensis Uchikawa, 1976, Hipposiderobia sp. 1 (Mannchen) und sp. 2 (Tritonympha), Ugandobia (И gandobia) dissintilis spec. поу., Pteracarus pusillиs thailandensis sspec. поу., Pteracarus sp. (Weibchen), und Acanthophthirizts (Myotiтyobia) scotophili spec. поу. wurden als parasitische FlеdегщаusmilЬеп aus Thailand verzeichnet. Die Mannchen уоп В. А survey 1 of mammalian fauna in Thailand was carried out during the period from August 21 to October 31 in 1974, under а cooperation with Applied Scientific Research Corporation of Thailand. Thirty-nine bats coprising about 20 species were collected Ьу the junior author ог were furnjshed with to him Ьу Мг. SONGSAKDI in the survey. These specimens that had Ьееп preserved in alcohol without pertition Ьу species yielded various acarine and insect parasites. 4 FIG Binuncus (Binuncus) jamesoni (Hiregaudar et Баl), male. А) dorsum ; Б) venter. м aterial examined. 1 ~ ех Rousettus leschnaulti, data uncertain ; 1 d' 1 ~ ех Eonycteris spelaea, data uncertain. НIRЕGЛUDЛR and ВЛL (1956) described this species based оп the female specimens, but the descriptions of the genital area, ventral setation and leg setae were not sufficient. As the male specimen was obtained for the first time, the present specimen is designated as the plesiotype, and is deposited in the collection of the National Science Museum, Tokyo (NSMT-Ac 9041). This species and Binuncus (В.) rouseti Fain closely resemble each other. Binuncus (Probinuncus) cynopterus Fain, 1975 (Fig. 3) Material examined. 3 ~~ and 2 deutonymphs ех Megaerops ecaudatus, Surin, Thailand, date uncertain. Females measured [L long Ьу [L wide, and were slightly smaller than the holotype female of this species that was taken from Cynopterus brachyotis from Mindanao Catabato, Philippine (Fain, 1975). The structures and setation оп any part of the mite accord, however, completely with the description Ьу FЛIN (1975). FЛIN (1975) characterised the subgenus Probinuncus as being furnished with terminal claws and а masive tibio-tarsus complex оп the leg 1, and mentioned that this subgenus was closer to

the genus Binиncиs, though it constituted а link between the genera Neomyobia Radford and Binиncиs Radford. Nothing is so far known about the morphology of immature stages of Руоbinиncиs. The nymphs obtained in the present study have legs r formed asymmetrically as shown in Fig. 3. This is not characteristic of the genus Neomyobia. FIG Binuncus (Probinuncus) cynopterus, Fain, del1tonymph. А) dorsum ; В) ventral,'ie,y of legs 1. М etabinиncиs birmanicиs Fain, 1976 (Figs. 4, 5) МЛLЕ (Fig. 4). The male of Metabinиncиs birmanicиs Fain also very closely resembles that of М. novaegиineae. The situation of the genital opening, the number of genital setae (са. 7 pairs vs. 5 pairs) and the form of the penis (bent ог straight) аге differential characteristics of the two males.

FIG Metabinuncus birmanicus Fain, deutonymph. А) dorsum; В) venter., '",,, ' r \ ~ FIG Metabinuncus birmanicus Fain. А) deutonymph; В) protonymph.

FAIN (1976) elevated Metabinиncиs that had been included in the genus Binиncиs as а subgenus to а full genus. As the legs r of М. birmanicиs аге forтed syттetrically in the deuto- and protonyтphs (Fig. 5), this generic separation is thought to Ье reasonable. А тale speciтen is designated as the plesiotype, and is deposited in the collection of the National Science Museuт, Tokyo (NSMT-Ac 9042). N eomyobia plиrihospitalis Uchikawa, 1978 (Fig. 6) Material examined. 2 ~ ~ and а deutonyтph ех Rhinolophus yиnaens~s, Muang Ngnai, Thailand, 1 Septeтber '".; FIG Neomyobia plиr i hospitali s Uchikawa, deutonymph. А) dorsum; В ) venter. Although only 2 f eтale speciтens were exaтined, тeasureтents and structures of the Thai speciтens well accorded with the description of Neomyobia plиrihospitalis Uchikawa. The deutonyтph of N. plиrihospitalis Uchikawa is not yet described, though the structure and setal arrangent аге fully anticipated basing оп the descriptions of the trito- and protonyтphs in UCНIKAWA (1978). The nyтph just as expected and as i1lustrated in Fig. 6 was obtained in the present study. The setae ve аге well developed and bases of setae d 1 and II аге virtually оп а transverse line. The situation of the latter 2 setae is а good criterion for the differentiation of Neomyobia plиrihospitalis Uchikawa froт N. solvenica DusЬ3Ьеk, though the feтales of the both species closely reseтble each other.

Measurements are as follows : Body 272 [1. long Ьу 100 [1. wide ; setae ve 50 [1. long Ьу 15 [1. wide ; sc е 35!l. long ; sc i 66 [1. ; d1 43 [1. ; d'/, 28 [1. ; [1. ; 12 15!l. ; distance between d1 and d 2 43 [1. ; d'/, and [1. apart. Hipposiderobia okinawaensis Ucblkawa, 1976 (Fig. 7) м aterial examined. 4 ~~ ех Hipposideros armiger, Muang Ngai, Thailand, 2 September FIG Hipposiderobia okinawaensis Uchikawa, female. А) dorst1m; В) venter. The original discription of Hipposiderobia okinawaensis Uchikawa, 1976 was based оп а single male and 2 females. Measurements for the present 4 females are as follows : Body ( ) [1. long Ьу ( ) [1. wide. Setae ve, sc е, d1, d 2, d 4, 11 and (68-78) [1., ( ) [1., 33.3 (29-38) [1., 25.8 (23-31) [1., 21.5 (15-28) [1., 85.8 (80-90) [1. and 16.5 (15-18) [1.10ng, respectively. The size of the body is slightly larger than that of the allotype and а paratype, and setae ve, sc е and 11 are approximately 1.5 times as long as those of the type specimens. Since il1traspecific variation of Н. okinawaensis has not fully been studied, the present authours inclines to identify the Thai mites as Н. okina7ijaensis despite of the above differences in measurements as well as the difference in the host bats. Н. okinawaensis is unique in having а pair of terminal claws ventrally оп legs 1, which were not referred to in the original description (UCНIKAWA, 1976). The drawings of the female are presented in Fig. 7А and В for better understanding of tbls species.

- 375 Hipposiderobia Sp. 1 (6) (Fig. 8) м ateria1 examined. Only а single male specimen found free in alcohol at bottom of а bat container. This male resembles that of Н. okinawaensis, but is distinctive in having 6 pairs of minute setae anterior to the genital opening, minute setae d 1 and d 2, and опе each of conspicuous dorsal setae оп the femur r and tibia r. The terminal claws оп leg r are not discernible оп the specimen. FIG Hipposiderobia sp. 1, male. А) dorsum; В) venter. Measurements are as follows : Body 210 [L long Ьу 125 [L wide. Setae ve, sc е, 11 and d 2 48 [L, 68 [L, 64 [L and 8 [L long, respectively. Penis sinuate distally, 70 [L long. Аll measurements are smaller than those for the holotype of Н. okinawaensis. This mite is probablly new to science. The dorsum and venter of the mite are as presented in Fig. 8А and В. Нipposiderobia sp. z (tritonymph) (Fig. 9) А tritonymph of anonymous Hipposderobia was taken from Rhino1ophиs yиnaensis from Mang Ngai, Thailand, date uncertain. Some female structures are clearly discernible through the integument. Since the setae vi of embedded female are barbed and striated, this mite differs from Н. okinawaensis and its relatives. Morphology of immature stages of the genus Hipposiderobia Dusbabek is quite unknown. The present specimen reveals that the legs r of the tritonymph are formed asymmetrically, and that inflated and striated setae ve, sc е, 11 and fine 15 are unlike those оп the adult. The conspicuous structures, inclusive of some setae, are as illustrated in Fig. 9. Fine setae other than those in figure might Ье present. Exact structure of the gnathosoma is not examined.

From the structure of the legs I and setae 15 of the tritonymph, both of which are characteristic of the family Myobiidae, the genus Hipposiderobia Dusbabek is thought to Ье allied to the genus Ioanne1a Dusbabek a11d Lukoskus occurri11g оп а phyllostomid bat. /.;.) / \.; " (,----- FIG Hipposiderobia sp., tritonymph. Body 260 fj.long, inclusive of leg 1, Ьу 70 fj. wide. Only setae sc е present оп propodosoma, 55 fj. long ; opisthosomal setae consisting of 6 pairs, inclusive of considerably devejoped 1з and 15 of 35 fj. Jong and ending in notched tips. Legs Т symmetrical, without peg-like setae оп femur. Only а single pair of intercoxal setae present. м ateria1 exaтined. Holotype female, allotype male, а paratype male, 8 deutonymphs, 5 protonymphs and а larva ех Tophozous тe1anopogon, Yale, Thailand, date uncertain. The holotype and allotype are deposited in the collection of the National Science Museum, Tokyo (NSMT-Ac 9039,9040), and а paratype male and immature stages in the collection of К. Uchikawa. This new species resembles И gandobia (И gandobia) barn1eyi (Radford) that was once recorded from Tndian Thaphozous longiтanus (Hiregaudar et Bal, 1956). The relative length of setae sc i and sc е, nature of the dorsaj. opisthosomal setae of the female, and nature of ventral setae ic1 are different between the new species and u. (и.) barn1eyi (Radford). The setation оп the propodosoma in the immature stages distinctly differs from that in the genus Exp1etobia Dusbabek and Lukoschus, which was recently elevatedfrom а subgenus of И gandobia (Fain, 1976). Although this remarkable setation lacking vi and sc i seems а generic characteristic, further studies оп immature stages of other species are necessary for confi.rming а соттоп setation in the genus. Pteracarus pusillus thailandensis sspec. nov. (Figs. 13, 14, 15) FEMALE (Fig. 13). Holotype and а single paratype were measured. Body 3381,-470 fj.long Ьу fj. wide. The holotype and allotype аге deposited in the cojlection of the National Science Museum, Tokyo (NSMT-Ac 9037, 9038), and the paratypes in the collection of К. Uchikawa. The new subspecies is separable from the nominate form, the distribution of which has so far been ristricted to Africa, Ьу the following characteristics. The ventral setae, iс 1 - з and сх П l - 2 ' аге fine and very long in the female, male and tritonymph. The ventral spines оп the tibiae IП and 1V slightly shorter than those of the nominate form in the adults and tritonymph. 17 Acanthophthiriиs (Myotimyobia) scotophili spec. nov. closely resembles Acanthophthirius (Myotimyobla) иnciger (Lawrence, 1951), а parasite of Scotophilиs nigrita from South Africa. Detailed morphology was not present ed in the original description of А. (М.) inciger (Lawrence), but the penis and genital plate аге formed different1y in the males of the above 2 species. Fig Acanthophthirius (Myotimyobia) scotophili, spec. nov., female. А) dorsum, В) venter. 1"[(, Acanthophthirius (Myotimyobia) scotophili, spec. nov., male. А) dorsum, В) venter.

The present new species is also al1ied to Acanthophthirius fortuitous (Radford, 1952), which was described basing оп the female taken from Scotophilus wroughtoni from India. Опlу а single pair of genital setae, g7' are cone-like in the female of А. (М.) scotophili spec. nov., while the genital pore of А. (М.) fortuitous (Radford) is described to Ье flanked Ьу three pairs of stout, cone-like spines. As remarkable differences are usually detectable between males of the suьgеппs Myotimyobia, partner females of which closely resemble each other, the above minor but distinctive difference in the genital setae of the female is thought to Ье sufficient to separate species.
