2 1 REQESCRIPTION AND NOTES ON AMBLYSEIUS 1 (üubemans). (ACARINA PHYTOSEIIDAE) 1 :,_ BY _ Robert -O. StHUSTER and Robértà H. GoNZÂLEZ 1. OunEMANS (1930) described this species withciut illustration. NESBiTT (:I951) puplished :OUDEMANs _drawirigs alàng with an English hansiation Ôf the original description. MAcGrLL (1939) described as new, Typhlodromus thripsi, a spe~ies, that EvANS (1952) placed in synonymy with T. cucumeris. WoMERSLEY (1954) described this species as Typhlodronius bellinus., ~eca:use of the sirri.ilitary of their spermathecae, DossE (1957) placed T. bellinus as a synonym of T. ryt6cumeris, and ATHIAS-HENRIOT (1960) accepted DossEs conclusion. CHANT, - Ïl;i. his revision of the family (1960), considered T. béllimts and T. cucumeris to ~e distinct species Howe ;ér, CHANT a_pparently applied the name T. bellinus to T. cucunieris and the name T. cucumeris to a species uhknown to us. Duririg a visit to Davis, Miss Elsie CoLL YER dl.d not reéognize Californi~ specimens a~ the form cominonly aécépt~d to be A. c~tcttmeris in Eu~ope. In view of the diversity of opinions regarding the identity of A. cuc~tmeris and since it is perhaps-the most frequent! y dtea species of Amblyseùis, its redescriptiori from the hcilotype s~eins tel be worth-while at this time. ". The inability of authors to agree on the characteristics of this mite must be due parti y to the fac~ that they, did not examine the type. The type, a poorly mounted specimen, has been 1:emourited in modified Hoyers. The setaé indicatecl as missing in the reclescription have been estimated from other specimens and induclecl on the drawings. They are 34/34 = r, 30/39 = ± 3/4 p.nd 30/44 = ± 2/3 This somewhat fit.s T. bellinus in Chants rg6o key but coulfl not possibly lead to T. cucumeris. Of particular interest, th en, is the identity of the.species considered by W omersley and CHANT to be T. cucumeris. We have not se~n the type of T. bellinus Womersley. - However, the senior author has seen specimens of the California population which C. E. I~ENNETT collected and sent to WoMERSLEY for comparison with T. bellinus (reported by KEN NETT, 1958). These specimens, determinedas bellinus by ~omérsley, are conspecifie with Amblyseius c-itcumeris Oudem.ans.. It is obviops from an e;l{amination of Table I why WoMERSLEY considered the California population to be T. bellinus. In n:!producing the se~al lengths given in the desci:iption o~ T. bellinus, we have changed the length of prolateral IV from 28 (J. to 38 [J.. These setae were illustrated by WÜMERSLEY as the longest, not the shortest, of the prolatèral series. One further point should be made although it doesnt pertain to the identity of A. cucumeris. This species was-chosen by Donald DE LEON (1959) for t~e type of the subgenus T,yphlodromopsis. One of the characteristics of the s.ubgenus was." M2 and ultimate lâteral seta usually strongly pectinate. ~, In respect to this ch.aracter, A. citcumeris was a poor choice for the type species, or else Typhlodro- mopsis was based on a spedes otper than A. cùcumerfs... We gratefully ac_knowledge the loan of the type specimen by the Rijks-museum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden.,.
