8 INTRODUCTION Systematics is a fast changing subject. Taxonomic changes at the generic and specific level are taking place at a rapid pace and the taxonomic designations get outdated and invalid. Though the amphibian taxonomy of peninsular India is better acknowledged, that of North East India is little known. The present work is an effort towards filling the vaccum in this regard. Dutta (1997) initiated bibliographical studies of the amphibians of India in his elaborate work "Amphibians of India and Sri Lanka (Checklist and Bibliography) " which was followed by a checklist of amphibians of India by Das and Dutta in 1998 and further updated by Daniels (20.0.1). India's North East is one of the hot spots of bio- diversity and its amphibian fauna though worked out to a moderate extent is yet to be thoroughly explored. Chanda in his monograph (1994) reported 54 species of anurans from this region. Dutta in his aforesaid checklist and bibliography (1997) reported 69 species including one species each of caudata and gymnophiona. Biodiversity Conservation Prioritisation Project (BCPP) India under Conservation Assessment and Management Plan (C.A.M.P) Workshops held at Bhubaneswar (1998) reported 72 species of amphibia including 2 gymnophiona and 1 caudata as occurring in N.E.lndia. Again, Chanda (20.0.2) in his handbook, reported 64 species including 3 gymnophiona and 1 caudata for this region. Sen (20.04) reported 83 species including 4 gymnophiona and 1 caudata. Frost (2008, V 5.1) reports 6184 species of amphibians from the World, 268 species from India. The present work deals with 109 species of anurans,1 species of caudata and 5 species of gymnophiona. Our effort here is to give an updated bibliographical account of the amphibians of North East India. As far as practicable we have incorporated all the synonyms of the taxa alongwith their distribution withi'n North East India and elsewhere. A species index is given for ready reference. However, two specimens collected from Garbhanga Reserve Forest, Assam and identified as L. sln;thi by Sengupta and deposited in the holdings of Eastern Regional Station, Zoological Survey of India, Shillong, agree with the description of L. hasseltii (Boulenger, 1882; Chanda, 1994). Therefore, we are of the opinion that the species L. hasseltii occurs in North East India. Examination of further material will ascertain the presence of L. smith; in India.
