3 From the Editors Desk Welcome to the ACT Gundog Society Newsletter. Spring is trying to poke its head through, although the recent snow reminds us it s still Winter! I hope you and the gundogs are all keeping warm, you can see from the picture left that my guys believe in sharing body warmth! The Society has had another busy few months conducting conformation shows and an agility trial. Both were well supported and well run events with results published in the Newsletter. We will be holding our annual Obedience trial soon in conjunction with the ACT Companion Dog Club, at their grounds. The schedule is also in the Newsletter. We are excited to have a big weekend of shows coming up in October with three international judges from Sweden and Serbia! In addition to two all gundogs Championship shows we will be holding a Retriever Specialty show. We hope to see you all there! There are a few fun doggy events coming up in Canberra which you can find a little more about in the following pages. On 9 th & 10 th of September Corin Forest is allowing dogs for a Snow Dogs weekend! On October 14 th is Dog s Day Out at Floriade. There are conditions for each event, so please read the notices and visit their websites for more information. The ACT Gundog Society Annual General Meeting will be held on November 22 nd at 7:30pm in the Dogs ACT rooms. Title trophies and point score awards will be presented. Keep sending me your results! 5 ACT Gundog Society 2017 Agility Trial The Society s annual agility trial was held on May 20 th 2017 at the ACT Companion Dog Club grounds. Despite the prediction of cold and wet weather, the sun shone and we again enjoyed a wonderful Autumn day. Our judges were Ms Jenny Marshall and Ms Helen Mosslar. The courses were fun and challenging to run with our Gundogs featuring well in the results. We again enjoyed an increased entry for event with a healthy number of gundog breeds including Brittanys, s, American Cockers, Golden Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointers, Hungarian Vizslas, Labrador Retrievers, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, English Setters and what I think is a first for this trial, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever! The highlight competition Top Gun Shootout was judged by aspirant judge Ms Pamela Hunt with support from Mr Jake Blight. 25 Gundogs negotiated the Excellent level jumping course, including two elder Brittany s that enjoyed the Not For Competition option with jumps set low. 4 dogs completed the course cleanly and in time with the winner being Judy Bratter with her German Shorthaired Pointer Quip - Fenrik Quik Clever Reply SDX GDX JD AD SPDX ET (pictured right). Our raffle was bigger and better than ever and I think everyone came away a winner and a grinner! Start collecting those goodies for next year. Thank you to our judges, stewards and everyone who helped the day run smoothly. A huge thanks to the ACT Companion Dog Club for use of their grounds, equipment and facilities. 8 Brittany s in attendance at the trial! Wow!

12 Barecho in October 2017 Show Judge s Profiles Ms Helene Bjorkman Barecho English Springer Spaniels (SWEDEN) Dogs have always been a big part of my life. I grow up in a home where we always have had dogs. My mom bred Standard Black Schnauzers and as soon as I was old enough I became co breeder in her kennel Svartskäggs. When I moved to my first own home I bought my first spaniel, a black/white English Springer Spaniel. She was born in 1987 and after that my home have been filled with lovely English Springer Spaniels. We have also had some s over the years, the first one born in 1997 and also Affenpinschers, first one born I started my own kennel under the prefix My first litter of ESS was born in Me and my husband David, who is co-owner of kennel Barecho, are still very active both as breeders and exhibitors. We have also bred a couple of litters of English s and Affenpinschers - but ESS is and will always be our main-breed. We have bred more than 100 champions (ESS) today, mostly show-champions. Since 2002 I am a FCI judge and I have mostly been judging in Sweden and the other Nordic countries, but also abroad as for example in England and Australia. Today I am authorized to judge mostly breeds in FCI group 8, but also Schnauzers and Pinschers. I very much look forward on judging in Australia again! Helene Björkman nearly all years since Carina Östman Kennel Caci s (SWEDEN) Under our kennel name Caci s my husband Mikael and my friend Caroline Lundqvist have bred American Cockerspaniels and Flat- Coated Retrievers for 30 years. During that time we have bred several World Winners, and more than 200 Champions in both breeds together. We were top dog breeder in Sweden (all breeds) in 2006, 2007 and 2015 and had the Dog off the Year in Sweden in In the last 11 years the Flatcoated off he Year in Sweden for 9 times was bred by us. And in Americans we have been American Cocker of the year We got several BIS with both breeds and many different individs in many countries and also BIS-titles with progenery groups and breeders groups in World Winner shows and other shows in many countries. The health and temperament of the dogs are of paramount importance for us. They must be happy, got self confident and love everybody both people and other dogs. Ofcourse we also look for lovely movements covering the ground, gorgeous heads and a sound construction. I have been judging for 20 years and love to see and be with the dogs.

13 A Pooch Affair For the second year the ACT Gundog Society had a stand at A Pooch Affair conducted at EPIC, in July. Meaghan and Kristy did a great job representing the Society and made the stand look very colourful and enticing! The event is a great opportunity to talk to the public about our Gundog breeds and about what the Society does. Don t the recently purchased banners look great!!
