2 Welcome to HOPALONG & SECOND CHANCE ANIMAL RESCUE! 2017 Year in Review We want to celebrate our hard work and share the experience of animal rescue with you! A day in the life of animal rescue is never boring, so we ve decided to open our doors and give you a peek behind the scenes. Hopalong Animal Rescue was founded 26 years ago, and has rescued 28,700 animals to date. Hopalong s mission is to RESCUE, REHABILITATE and REHOME neglected and homeless animals from Bay Area shelters and beyond. We save over 1300 shelter animals a year, and have grown into the LARGEST, ALL-FOSTER, RESCUE GROUP IN THE BAY AREA.

3 Core Programs ADOPTION VOLUNTEER FOSTER PET SURVIVOR COMMUNITY SPAY / NEUTER Where do our animals come from? We pull from 20 city shelters and rescue groups covering 11 counties both within and outside of the Bay Area. However, we are often asked to assist in both national and international emergency relief as well. The animals we rescue are often on euthanasia lists with little time left, so we are on the road around the clock. The animals usually arrive exhausted, scared and ill. We immediately give them medical treatment, microchips, vaccines and de-wormer, then pack them up for their foster homes. It is a whirlwind, but the goal is to quickly get them into foster homes to begin resting and recuperating. 1

4 Where are we located? We were founded 26 years ago by Helen Hill in Oakland, CA, and merged with Second Chance Animal Rescue in Marin County nine years ago. Our main headquarters have been in Oakland, CA, but we have a NEW OFFICE in Mill Valley, CA now that just launched! This gives us great coverage to support all of our fosters and adopters who are spread throughout San Francisco, the East Bay and Marin County! We will continue to pull from around the Bay Area, and create a stronger pipeline bringing our rescue animals into Marin. For now, we currently have 215 FOSTER HOMES IN MARIN, and 345 IN THE EAST BAY AND SAN FRANCISCO! ND AVE, OAKLAND CA 367 MILLER AVE, MILL VALLEY CA What's our specialty? Our greatest strength is the ability to rescue so many special needs animals that often require treatment or special assistance. These animals are usually sick, injured or senior, and are often the ones that do very poorly in a shelter environment. We always have a full array of animals with a wide spectrum of challenges, but we have identified a level where animals are often overlooked by adopters and more likely to be euthanized by shelters. THIS IS WHERE WE SHINE Because we place every animal we rescue into a foster home, it is the perfect opportunity to get them the care they need in a loving, supportive environment. 2

5 The foster experience At 10am, we found Bentley in the back corner of a pen in Oakland Animal Shelter where he was facing the back wall cowering, completely shut down, and would not make eye contact. By 5pm the same day, this was Bentley in his foster home. One of the best parts of our job is witnessing the complete metamorphosis our rescue animals go through in the foster homes. The average foster stay in a home is about three weeks, and we equip each family with food, bedding, toys etc., so there is never any cost to host an animal. After the first three days in a home, we often joke that the dog or cat will often start to relax and unpack their baggage. The joy of this is that once an animal feels comfortable and secure, their true personality comes out, and we can get an excellent snapshot of who they really are. This information is invaluable, and helps us find the most well-matched adoptive families! 3

6 How are we able to rescue SO MANY animals? Our fosters and our volunteers... Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Not including our fosters, we currently have over 410 ACTIVE VOLUNTEERS in the Bay Area! We adopt over 1300 shelter animals a year, and would never be able to rescue so many lives without the hard work and dedication of these incredible people. We have had the pleasure of large, corporate groups who come and volunteer with us on-site as well including Google, Cliff Bar, Clorox, Lush, Pandora and the Coast Guard to name a few. To find out more about our volunteer opportunities, visit our website! Our staff... The incredible Hopalong team is a small but mighty group of individuals. With a staff of only six full time, and three part time individuals, these gals work tirelessly around the clock! You will find us in and out of shelters almost daily, and are the voices you so often hear on the other end of the phone line managing the animals. 7 The final step getting adopted! We rescue and place over 1300 animals a year! Once our animals have completed their time in foster care, they are ready to find their forever homes! All of our animals go up on our website on our adoption pages, as well as being posted on Petfinder and Adopt a Pet. Our cats and kittens go to a variety of adoption condos in various pet stores that have generously donated their space and staff to care for them. Our dogs go to weekly mobile adoption events each Saturday, and also have meet and greets scheduled in our offices. We screen our adopters rigorously and take our animals back at any point in their lifetime. One of the things that helps our staff continue their lifesaving work is the constant flood of pictures and stories that come in from our adopters. It makes our day every time. 5

8 What a year it has been! 2017 WAS ONE OF OUR BUSIEST YEARS EVER WITH SOME LIFE-CHANGING CASES AND EVENTS. HOPALONG WAS A MAJOR PLAYER IN ASSISTING ANIMALS IN DISASTERS LIKE THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES AND HURRICANE IRMA. While Hopalong often lends assistance to other rescue groups both nationally and internationally, 2017 animal rescue operations happened on a much larger scale. When the NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FIRES HIT, we immediately responded and helped evacuate animals from the Sonoma Animal Shelter. In addition, we took in over 70 animals from several of the other fire zones. 6 We are deeply moved each time there is a disaster by the strong support from our community. When we reach out for assistance, we get a response that always humbles us. With the fires, 600 HOMES stepped forward with offers to foster, and both of our offices received an outpouring of supplies, volunteers and fosters within hours. We received 36 VAN LOADS of donated supplies to our Oakland office, and 28 VAN LOADS to our Marin office.

9 When HURRICANE IRMA STRUCK, 52 of our foster families stepped forward in less than 24 hours to offer their homes. We had the pleasure of unloading many of the animals with the help of the Golden State Warriors! When ONE OF THE CALIFORNIA S WORST ANIMAL HOARDING CASES made headlines in Stockton, CA, the Stockton Animal Shelter called Hopalong Animal Rescue, and we instantly took in 82 neglected dogs and puppies at once. Within 24 hours, they were all in foster homes. It was a moving experience as we noticed that none of them barked. Our fosters worked to teach these puppies how to be dogs; they learned to touch grass and play with toys for the first time. Today they have all been adopted and are doing beautifully. 7

12 One of our toughest cases with a lovely ending Bagel, now Leo... When we are in the field rescuing animals, we often come across difficult abuse and neglect cases that are hard to understand and witness. One case however was one of the toughest ones we have faced to date. Bagel came to us malnourished and with multiple breaks in all four legs, ribs, pelvis and tail. His abuse had been systematic during his entire, eight month life. When he arrived, he could hardly stand, but had one of the best dispositions we had come across. We weren t sure how he could have such a happy demeanor given his history, and he endeared himself to everyone. We reached out to the community for support to raise funds for the numerous surgeries Bagel would need over the years, and the response once again was breathtaking. $20,000 was raised to cover his lifetime of medical support which was exactly the amount estimated by his surgeon. We want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for supporting this sweet boy. He was adopted by one of the best families we could have ever wished for him, and is doing absolutely beautifully. 10

13 Puddles Animals wind up in shelters for a variety of reasons, and sadly, many animals that are used to being in a home with their family do not do well when they arrive in a shelter. We see a huge number of animals who land in shelters because their families move to a place that can t take animals, and the Bay Area housing crisis significantly adds to the dramatic increase of animals flooding in. Puddles was six years old when her family surrendered her to us due to a move. She was deeply depressed and declining quickly. We strive to move animals who have just lost their homes as quickly as possible, and this girl found a lovely, new, adoptive home in November. Tessa Tessa was another hard case of abuse where she was driven up from Tijuana, Mexico after living on the streets and being set on fire. She barely came out from under the bed when she arrived, and was deeply malnourished and sickly. We are sharing this photo of her to show how much she bloomed in her amazing foster home. Her foster mom took her everywhere with her, including to work at Google where Tessa is seen getting acquainted with the Hulk. 11

14 Community Services Our headquarters office is located in Oakland, and our backyard is important to us. We partner closely with Oakland Animal Shelter as they work hard to keep up with the high volume of animals pouring in their doors. COMMUNITY SURRENDER Staying upstream of shelter intake can make a difference and help with overcrowding and disease, so we make a strong effort to try and take in surrendered animals before they hit the shelters. We have seen community surrenders increase by 35% in the past year, and we will continue this upward trend. THE HOMELESS We treat and provide care to many animals belonging to homeless individuals and community encampments in Oakland. Vaccines, de-worming, medical treatment and surgical care have been included in this rapidly growing area. Veterinary care is paramount to our organization Hopalong and Second Chance animal rescue stands apart from most rescue groups in that we make FULL medical care and coverage an integral part of our program BEFORE they get adopted. We do not adopt out sick or injured animals, so in addition to vaccinating, micro-chipping spaying and neutering all of our animals while in our foster homes, we fully, medically treat them. We do this by contracting with a network of skilled, veterinary practices throughout the Bay Area who graciously discount their exam, lab and surgical services for us. We are indebted to these vets and their staff. SPAY / NEUTER Our Spay / Neuter program provides vouchers for individuals and their animals so that they can take their pets directly to one of our vets to be fixed. Originally started for low-income families, the program has grown considerably, and we have found people traveling from all over the Bay Area to participate. 12

15 When Skipper's mom passed away, he immediately came to Hopalong as part of our PSP program. Money had been set aside for his future medical care, and at 12 years old, he was adopted into this phenomenal family who adored him until his passing several years later. Hopalong's very unique, Pet Survivor Program Many people worry about what will happen to their pet after they are gone. What many don t realize is that many animals wind up in shelters when their owners or parents have passed away. These pets tend to do very poorly after living in a home their entire lives, and often don t make it in the shelter environment. Hopalong created a comprehensive program 19 years ago after seeing so many animals like this struggling, and the program is very popular. We are one of the few organizations in the U.S. that has a program like this, and animals even come to us from out of state.
