2 COVER STORY American and Mexican CH. GARLU HAGGIS BAGGIS By Eugenia Grow TENGA CUIDADO CON EL PERRO QUE NO SALGA DEL CUARTO. SU NOMBRE ES "SENOR TWEED." NO MUERDE, ES MUY BUEN PERRO... GRACIAS. This sign was posted on the door of all our hotel rooms in Mexico when we campaigned "Mr. Tweed" last May in the land south of the border. It says, in effect, (and a literal translation) "To take care with the dog that he does not escape from the room. His name is 'Mr. Tweed.' He will not bite and is a very good dog... thank you." The fear of dogs in Mexico is not without foundation especially among the lower classes of the people. Their experience with dogs is mainly with strays or wanderers foraging for food or with large guard dogs that belong to the middle and upper classes. We found the largest entries in the three shows in German Shepherds and Dobermans, which seem to be the most popular for guard duties. However, "Mr. Tweed" won the hearts of the Mexican people and his traveling companions. The clerk at the desk, the elevator girls, the shoeshine boys, the cooks in the hotel kitchen who prepared his special meals, and sent them up on a silver platter, the airline pilots... all were enthusiastic about this celebrity from the United States. He was the first to stay in the new, plush Maria Isabel Hotel in Mexico City.... and Tweed took it all in his stride -true Scot that he is. From the moment he boarded the plane, with his own special seat between my husband and I, along with forty other passengers, he behaved as the well-adjusted Champion that he is. H e made many friends for us and gave much pleasure in his two Best in Show wins out of the three shows, besides obtaining his Mexican Championship. He was a stout-hearted pal, tough enough, and willing to put up with all that we asked of him. H e kept going all day, and withstood the changes with endurance and intelligence. He even endured the Acapulco earthquake with more calmness than his owners. The Mexico Show Circuit is a truly memorable experience. We were "wined and dined" by the Asociacion Canofla Mexicana people, headed by Sr. Manuel Iberra, and Mrs. Ruth Covos and Mrs. Thelma Von Thaden. The sportsmanship displayed in the ring is something that all in the United States can reap a real lesson. Our latest thrill is Tweed's Best in Show at Tucson, Arizona, over 876 entries. Under the very able handling of Daisy Austad, he was bestowed this honor by Judge Maxwell Riddle. This p ast February, he was Best Opposite Sex over 0 entries at the Scottish Ter rier Club of America Specialty in New York, with Mrs. Blanche Reeg judging. Ch. Garlu Haggis Baggis has compiled an outstanding show record. His major wins total Best of Breeds, five Group Firsts, five Group Seconds, seven Group Thirds, five Group Fourths and three Best in Shows, All Breeds. H e was the leading winner in Arizona and California in 96 and placed in the top 0 winners of his breed in the United States for 96. This exceptional four-year-old dog was sired by Ch. Marlorain Dark Seal, a son of Int. Ch. Deephaven Red Seal. His dam was Ch. Garlu Merry Haggis, sired by Ch. MacKinnon's Top Trick, a son of Int. Ch. Walsing Winning Trick of Edgerstoune. We w ish to thank all the judges who have had such nice things to say about Tweed, and have honored him with these wins. Our grateful thanks, too, to Daisy Austad for her great job in conditioning and handling him.

4 STATISTICALLY SPEAKING OF 96 By John T. Knight.> $ The year 96 was a good one for terriers in the show ring. Some old-timers repeated their winning ways and many newcomers to the spotlight came forth to shin e brightly. Let's take a look at w ho did what. Miniature Schnauzers led in competition, as they did in registrations, w ith 60. Scotties were next with 9, followed by Wire Fox Terr iers with 970. Lakeland Terriers captured the most Best in Shows with 8. Skyes were next with, followed by Westies with. Group firsts saw Wire Fox Terriers leading with 6; Group seconds led by Scotties with 79 ; Miniature Schnauzers with 76 led in Group thirds and Scotties took the most Group fourths with 7. Individual winners were: Best in Show-the Lakeland, Ch. Brazen Blond of Oz, with 6. Group firsts also to Brazen Blond, with. Group seconds showed a tie-ch. Jacinthe de Ricelaine, Skye, and the White Bull Terrier, Ch. Radar of Monty Ayr with each. Radar took it all with nine each in Group thirds and Group fourths. Radar also easily led in Best of Varieties with 7. There are systems and systems for determining the top w inners. An excellent one is that developed by Mrs. Irene Castle Phillips. To me, however, it has the defect of not giving full recognition to the minor breeds which ar e often overlooked or ignored by Group judges-not intentionally, I'm sure, but due to unfamiliarity w ith the breed. Studying the problem, I decided to tabulate the terriers for 96 in accordance with how many they were able to defeat in competition WITHIN THEIR OWN BREED and the results are presented herewith. It should be interesting to compare the results of the two systems. Without disparaging Mrs. Phillips' system, it is true that a Group judge's eye will be caught by a flashy specimen and it will go up-even all the way to Best in Show and thus pile up points w hile an equally good or better specimen w ill be passed over because the judges don't know the breed or don't care for it. No disparagement of the judges is intended. They are human too. Well, here they are and let the brickbats fall... 10 GROOMING AND CONDITIONING THE SCOTTIE PART Ill By Ann Gilkey When the novice groomer has become familiar with the various methods of grooming his Scottie, and the use of his trimming tools becomes an extension of his hands, he will usually have developed an "eye" to what more particular grooming can do to enhance his dog's over-all appearance. As the groomer becomes more skilled, he will become aware of ways and means to highlight the best in his dog's conformation and minimize the faults. By careful application of the Standard to the dog, one soon learns what is expected, appearance-wise, of the ideal Scottie, and can apply proper trimming care so as to bring his own dog closer to the mental picture of perfection. As perfection can only be attained in the mind's eye (the perfect Scottie hasn't been bred) one must attain the effect of perfection through grooming. At times, and on some dogs, this requires a "touch of genius" and the "touch" is acquired after many hours of practice and "daring" to go just a bit farther How often have we heard, "That is the effect I wanted.... I just knew that my dog ought to look that way, but I was afraid to take any more off." Be daring! Take it off a hair at a time if necessary. If you honestly and intuitively feel that your dog's appearance will be enhanced by the removal of additional coat... take it off! If by chance your hunch was erroneous, you will have several months of looking at your mistake to see how your "effect" could have been achieved correctly. You may, and undoubtedly will, make other trimming mistakes, as do we all, but you'll never make the same one again. As mentioned previously, the term "sectioning" refers to stripping a dog in parts with various time spans allott ed between sections. Before actually beginning the stripping of any section, it is well to understand why this particular method is preferable. The forward section of the dog (head, neck and shoulders) presents a better balanced over-all picture if it is considerably shorter in coat length than that of the back and sides. The hair on the skull will be shorter by far than the back, so as to bring out the "long, lean head." The shoulders are brought out by creating a smooth, tapered line from the ear to the point of the shoulder (thus creating the need for shorter coat CH. 11 A B cl on the aforementioned portion). The effect of a "carrot" tail is created by different lengths of hair, and so we go. In Diagram A, we illustrate a small portion of the back, known as the withers, being removed first. As you see, the withers are located directly behind the points of the shoulder blades and continue to the lowest spot in the forward section of the back. As the Scottie usually carries a tremendous middle-piece, if the shoulders aren't absolutely perfect in placement, a dip will occur at the withers, and if the fault isn't corrected in trimming, the topline and general appearance are ruined. As most Scotties do not have perfect shoulders, this "dip" at the withers must be minimized by particular grooming. So let us begin our sectioning at the withers in an attempt to correct the seldom admitted fault. Pluck the hair from the withers, as shown in Diagram A, approximately to 6 weeks before the first show. The soft, fluffy undercoat may be ANSTAMM KENNELS MR. & MRS. ANTHONY STAMM 097 So. th St. Route No. I Kalamazoo, Mich. Fireside -06 permitted to remain until the new growth is in evidence. Diagram B is presented to illustrate the second "section" to be removed weeks after the first section. After removing the top of the neck, back and base of the tail, shown in Diagram B, you will no doubt wonder if your young "hopeful" will ever make it in time! He will look like anything but the projected image you have in mind of a beautifully groomed Scottie, whose coat seems to fit like a glove, and with four visible feet when in motion. As with most of life's little problems, things get worse before they get better, so hide young hopeful from the eyes of the w orld, grit your teeth, and get out your brush. Ten minutes a day with a good medium bristle hair brush will help stimulate the harr follicles, and y ou will soon be seeing "tooth-brush bristles" in Section A, at which time the fluffy undercoat should be removed. To do this, use your Magnet stripper as a ENGLISH AND AMERICAN CHAMPION BAR DENE BOY BLUE -BEST OF BREED-WESTMINSTER, 96 AT STUD- FEE: $7.00 Agent - Handler LENA KARDOS Hillcrest Inglewood, Calif. 12 comb, and go over the area a few times each day very gently and lightly. The undercoat will gradually be removed in this fashion, permitting the beautiful new coat to come thr ough much faster than if it had to fight the undercoat to break through. During the daily sessions, do not igno_re the leg, body and face furnishings. These are to be brushed well, and kept tangle free, as well as the dead hairs plucked. When it comes time for these areas to be trimmed, you will want them to be in the very best condition, so that trimming and shaping can be done to perfection. It is advisable to keep them lightly oiled so they won't break off. Keeping adequate length to furnishings is often quite a problem, particularly on the very active Scots, whose day is not complete without a bit of digging or a "family" tussle. The brushing of the plucked sections, in addition to stimulating coat growth, w ill train the new hair to lie properly and evenly. As the new coat breaks Bafachan SCOTTISH TERRIERS A DVERTISE IN... through, some Scotties will appear to have developed a dandruffy skin (the human equivalent is seen as a ring in the bathtub after bathing). Dead epidermis cells replace themselves on your dog as they do on yourself. Since the dog can't get into the bathtub to scrub it off, you must do it for him, by keeping him scrupulously clean and brushed. A damp sponging of the plucked areas about once a week will be appreciated by your young hopeful. Dirt and sand are natura l enemies of a new coat. Let cleanliness be your watchword in everything you do concerning dogs. Having accomplished and digested the contents of the current installment, we will wait until next month's issue for further developments. SCOTTIES by Martha Melekov 6 Belle Port Ave. Harbor City, California.,, We seem to be experiencing the "lull" after the "storm" with the New York Specialty, the "Garden" and the Florida Specialty things of the past and next to nothing reported to this writer since then! This seems to be the case now and then, as these very "special" events tend to make us just plain sit back for awhile to either count our blessings or lick our wounds. 14 pleasure of going over most, if not all, of the top Scotties in the country, as the entry included the top dogs from the Far West, Midwest and the East. Sometimes we get discouraged because top quality is so rare and feel that progress is very slow and sometimes negligible. However, the four dogs that I would make the top four in the show were real quality, and there was very little except perhaps temporary condition between them. "I think that in the last few years we have made improvement in shoulders and fronts, eyes and ears in our American-bred dogs. However, quarters and rears seem to me to need improvement. It is very promising to find breeders and amateurs as well as several of the newer handlers progressing in conditioning and presenting the dogs. I believe that in order to help the entries in all terriers, it is important for the breeders to be able to trim and handle their puppies before turning them over to a handler-in case that is necessary. None of u s are born trimmers or handlers, but that is part of th e challenge in terriers."
