3 TOP INDIVIDUALS IN BREED COMPETITION Through February 29, 1964 by John T. Knight Before explaining what is to follow, we w ould again like to take this opportunity to remind our readers that the "system" used to obtain the statistics used for this and our "TOP TWENTY TERRIERS" is unique, and cannot in any way be compared with the popular "Phillips System". Incidently, we do not offer statistics on the "Phillips" basis, as it is presently and popularly used by Popular Dogs, who have reserved rights regarding its use. The "Knight System" has as its basis, competition within the breed ONLY, and does not give points for dogs defeated in Group and Best in Show competition. Although we have stressed this point on several previous occasions, letters are still received monthly, asking "why such and such a dog was not given credit for his Group fourth, or Best in Show?" Points in the "Knight System" are a warded only for each dog defeated (no points give:, if the dog is without competition in gaining Best of Breed) in earning a Best of Breed Points are not awarded for lesser wins (Best Opposite Sex, Winners Dog, etc.) as the statistical data w ould then became too cumbersome. We do not pretend that this is a better, or lesser system, but only that it is another method of evaluating competition, and stress is given to the importance of wins within the breed. The list that follows will appear periodically, naming first the individual Terrier breed, the number of Bests of Breed offered to date, the number of different individuals that earned BOB during that period, the competition in that breed to date, the number of Bests of Breed earned to score the points received, and finally the name of the individual within that breed w hich has earned the largest total of points to date. The list below covers shows from Jan. 1st to Feb. 29th inclusive, and as an example, in Airedales there w ere 26 BOB awards made, and 21 different Airedales won this award in competition that total 148 (this number being those exhibited during the period, and duplication of individuals are frequent, as they are exhibited in several shows). Ch. Wraggletaggle Cadence scored the largest number of points (29) with her Best of Breed win at the N. Y. Specialty. Whitebriar Journeyman A final note to eliminate further confusion, of the individuals mentioned above who are indicated as champions, most of these have since finished, but earned these awards from the classes. The basis of the above awards reflex mostly the Florida circuit and the various Parent Club Specialties in New York, as well as the large breed entries at Westminster. Our future tabulations will undoubtedly bring many changes, although several of the a bove individuals will surely retain their dominance in Breed competition. SCOTTIES by Martha Melekov Belle Port Ave. Harbor City, California A recent issue of POPULAR DOGS carried the announcement that the Professional Handlers' Association is now actively planning an educational program for those aspiring to be handlers... a program PD has long advocated. Highlights of the plan are that the student will apprentice two years under approximately six P. H. A. members, serving about four months with each member, and will be trained in preparing all breeds. The trainee will be expected to assist the instructor in all phases of kennel management and showing of dogs, even the most menial tasks. On completion of the required training program, the trainee will acquire a certificate, signed by each of his six instructors, which will be forwarded to the American Kennel Club, together with a letter of rec-' ommendation signed by the Board of Governors of the P. H. A. To this writer, the plan is long over-due. As of now, there is no test or examination to prove the qualifications of the long list of applicants for handlers licenses that grace every edition of the GAZETTE. To be sure, some have worked arduously and conscientiously to qualify, but because of some tired, old personal animosities, letters reach AKC regarding the applicant that tend to cast shadows on his capabilities, and as this is all the licensing board has to go on, the applicant is rejected. On the other hand, some of the applicants have never shown anything but their own breed, sometimes thefr own dogs, and, in the case of terriers, at least, know nothing about conditioning for show. 16 I L,, CAMYDNAS BONNIE DOON shown taking Winners Bitch at the "International" under Lee Murray. It took 8 years to repeat the performance, but it was a wonderful repeat for owner-handler, Allan Cartwright of Schererville, Ind. (Brown photo) AKC does have regulations regarding adequate kennel facilities and requires photographs, but sometimes well-meaning friends allow pictures of their facilities to be submitted, and how will the AKC know the difference? A lot of exhibitors, who enjoy taking dogs in the ring, see no reason why they shouldn't show that pup they sold and get a fee, so might as well become a handler... Little do they realize the painstaking hours spent conditioning terriers by the top handlers, the problems of diet, housing, orientation, etc., continually confronting them. Too little emphasis has been placed on the art of handling, and the fact that more talent is needed than being able to lead and stack a dog. 6 pup the w ould-be handler is showing, due to unprofessional grooming and showing, never w ins anything beyond a puppy match, and sooner or later, the owner becomes discouraged, and an exhibitor is lost to the fancy. When and if the new P.H.A. plan becomes effective, new exhibitors will be much less likely to be duped by self-styled handlers, and the handling profession will acquire much-needed dignity and respect. "CLAN CLARION" of the Washington State ST Club announces its Specialty show to be held July 25th at Seattle, with Ben Brown judging. Mr. Brown officiated at th e February Parent Club Specialty, receiving favorable comment. A new Group winner from the Northwest is Carnation Chanteuse, who took the Group a t Portland in March, ably handled by Bob Bartos. The many friends of Alice and Keith Fuller who had made their home in the ill-fated city of Anchor- ANSTAMM KENNELS WINNER of 1963 STCA Maloney Trophy for most Best of Breed wins OFFERS AT STUD age, Alaska, w ill be relieved to know that both they and their dogs are alive and well. Although the damages to their home and property will easily reach some $30,000, they both feel extremely fortunate to have lost nothing more. Although her letter covered many of the details concerning the earthquake, space limits us to the following "summing up": "For the first couple of weeks we all thought only of getting squared away enough to start rebuilding Anchorage. Now a s the initial shock has worn off and one realized the personal financial loss, you begin to wonder if you'll make it. 7 Scots at least). We have lights, heat and butane gas to cook with... but no water or sewage disposal, but those things really don't seem to matter as they used to. We manage fine. "We're still trying to salvage from the house, but it's slow work, and with no heat, very cold. Besides storage is at a premium with every bit of space taken by businesses. All we can d o is pack as much as we can into the trailer and leave the rest in what's left of the house, hoping it doesn't a ll go over the b luff. Making their debut at this show, and real "scene stealers" they, were two 6 month old pups owned by the Charves... both possessing real Scot temperament, and at such an early age! The Spring Match of the STC of New England brought out an excellent entry. Best Puppy as well as Best in Match went to Gerald Skulley's Leslyrod Lywea r Luckifox, while best Bitch Puppy was Kimmie 0- Fearing Pond, owned by Preston Miller. The Skulley's also owned the Best Adult in their Leslyrod Lilac Liza. The first issue of "DIEHARD DO IN'S" is out. This is the monthly newsletter of our newest Breed Club, the Heart of America STC. In it they present a list of charter members, a long with the names of their champions owned. Their emblem, a black Scot in front of a bright red heart, will soon be made into patches to be worn on jackets or skirt pockets. A June "Fun Match" is planned, along with several other exciting activities. Members of this club enjoy a most active show year resulting in three new champions and a CD degree: The Crafts' Ch.
