VISION To prevent animal cruelty; educate about humane treatment of animals; provide shelter and love to abandoned and abused animals; and encourage adoption to suitable homes. Through education and programming, we hope to promote responsible pet ownership and encourage spaying/neutering, so animals can live the best life possible. Our goal is to engage and encourage our society to create communities where all animals who depend on humans for their wellbeing can experience freedom from hunger and thirst, pain and injury, distress and discomfort.

3 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends and Supporters; 2016 turned into an incredibly busy and rewarding year for the NWT SPCA. With animal intake at a record high our adoptions and transfers were also increased from previous years. We were fortunate to work with many fantastic people and rescue groups that are dedicated as we are to animal welfare and safety. Our trusted Northern and Western Canada rescues make the daunting task of finding room for all the animals a little less overwhelming. Our programs are improving and more communities are taking advantage of them. A visit to Edzo for a spay/neuter clinic in March and to Enterprise for a vaccine clinic in June was well received. From the vaccine clinic, we secured several animals for the Spay/Neuter Program. We are looking to returning to these communities and others soon for more clinics. Behchoko youth were very enthusiastic to participate and we are hoping that this involvement will peak their interest to have careers in animal care, to work hard and reach their dreams. It truly was a wonderful experience to be involved in for us. The dedication and passion of volunteers and employees are what makes every year so rewarding and successful. As a collective team we raised over $200,000 with our annual and independent events coordinated by individuals and businesses around Yellowknife. Events such as Yellowknife Gardens Tour, Borealis Pets Santa Paws Pet Photo s and Crooked Whisker s Return of the Grinch photos Day and new events such as Twin Pine Diner Gourmets Hotdog sales and The Brew Pub Burt s Bitter Brown Charity Beer, we raised much needed funds to grow and develop our programs. Because of more intakes, we welcomed our first Vet Tech/Shelter Supervisor in 2016 and as a direct result saw a decrease in our clinic expenses outside of the shelter. Our existing staff can benefit from better management and an improved working environment. With increased morale in the shelter and employee retention our volunteer participation has improved. Employee and volunteers are essential to a well-run shelter and therefor better animal care. The following pages outline in detail the growth we saw in 2016 and the involvement with our community. It gives a clear understanding of the communities we worked with and the animals we helped. With the continues generosity of our supporters with their time, resources and skills as well as their compassion, we look forward to another successful year in Together we are making a positive difference to the animals and people of the North. 4 NUMBER OF DOGS NWT SPCA Report 3 GEOGRAPHIC AREA AND INTAKES Though our focus is the communities in the NWT, we do help the communities of Western Nunavut. This year 66 dogs came from 6 Nunavut communities. The Delta Region number has increased due the assistance from the Inuvik team. Proximity to Yellowknife is a driving factor with respect to the North Slave Region. Proactive management in communities by the local governments to improve the welfare of stray dogs is also a factor in driving numbers up. 5 4 ANIMAL STATISTICS 350 Animal Facts & Figures Adoptions Transfers Deceased The NWT SPCA found new local homes for 240 animals and an additional 73animals were adopted out of the Territory. All well loved and cared for. Over 40 trusted animal rescue groups in the South assisted with rehoming 313 dogs that were transferred into their care. Most were adopted almost immediately. The NWT SPCA no kill shelter meaning animals are not euthanized unless medically required. Often animals arrive in very poor health and we must make the decision to euthanize. We do not make this decision lightly and very much depend on the medical advice of our local veterinarians at Great Slave Animal Hospital. We also consult with veterinarians from University of Calgary. This year we said good-bye to 6 animals. People such as teachers, RCMP officers, SAO s and community members reach out to us about many things like community clinics, medical attention for pets, to get unwanted animals out of a community, and educational material for schools. The NWT SPCA finds a way to help and support all communities as best we can.

This year intakes included 555 dogs, 97 cats, 4 rabbits, 2 ferrets and 1 finch, and several gerbils. 34 animals born at the shelter as well.

Businesses, both large and small, also contribute and make the programs and events successful. We are so fortunate to have the support that we do.

Every single celebration or fund raiser, big or small, contributes to the success. We are so pleased with the entire community for involving themselves. Businesses, both large and small, also contribute and make the programs and events successful. We are so fortunate to have the support that we do. ANNUAL GALA The 5th Annual Gala, The Luck of the Irish, was held on March 11, 2017 at the new Chateau Nova Hotel and Suites. It was a considerable success raising a record $63,000. ANNUAL NWT MIDNIGHT SUN COLLABORATION Once again, the NWT Riders Association had their Midnight Sun Run involving dozens of riders from all over Canada. It is an opportunity for local bikers and car enthusiasts to take part in or just admire the machines. In 2016, the NWT Riders BBQ Midnight Sun Run- Raised $7900, proceeds going to the NWT SPCA. FAMILY CARNIVAL DAY & MEMORIAL DOG WALK The NWT SPCA had a beautiful day for our Annual Family Carnival and Memorial Dog Walk. Attendance was at an all-time high and registration for the Dog Walk/5km Run was well attended compared to previous years. The NWT SPCA awards a scholarship at this event every year along with the Maureen Goldsmith Scholarship funded by Maureen s family. A total of $1000 in scholarships was presented.

8 RAFFLE The Mothers Day Raffle which raised almost $10,000 was held in April and May and the draw was June 1, 2016.

All Prizes were donated. A success! NATIONAL CUPCAKE DAY For the past two years in February we have been a part of this Nation wide event. National Cupcake Day is a wonderful community oriented program that raises thousands of dollars for organizations and gets young and old involved from anywhere in Canada. Each group that registers across the country gets a chance to raise money for their rescue. Lots of Fun and delicious Goodies! PROGRAMS The NWT SPCA has many programs in place to help people in the NWT and Nunavut and the animals they care for. The NWT SPCA is very much a community oriented organization and do our utmost to involve and help as many people as possible. We promote animal care and safety by offering vet care programs, educational material, and scholarships. The organization supplies basic food and equipment that are not easily obtained or affordable in remote communities. 9 SHELTER IMPROVEMENTS The NWT SPCA van (previously donated) received and upgrade in 2016.

The van is a valuable tool for transportation to and from the vet clinic and airport. A perimeter fence around the property was started.

Crush was added to the parking lot and a garbage bin and recycling holding box is keeping the lot tidier. Preparation for the new garage was also started.

Hours and hours of selfless, unpaid work is contributed by the Board of Directors and NWT SPCA members.

Sand and gravel were added to the large dog run increasing the quality and enduring comfort and safety for the dogs that use it. VOLUNTEERS To say volunteers are great would be an understatement. Without them the NWT SPCA would not endure. Hours and hours of selfless, unpaid work is contributed by the Board of Directors and NWT SPCA members. Their passion, drive and tenacity for the love of animals is incredible. The demonstration of compassion, empathy and desire to volunteer by the local youth is truly inspiring. Their passion, drive and tenacity for the love of animals is incredible. Whether it be spending time sorting and counting recycling in the cold, or dog walking is -35 C, it all adds up to wonderful people who care for our organization and what it represents.
