Please join me in welcoming her to Blue Ridge Dog Training Club. I enjoyed getting to know her a little as she participated in our Demonstration this weekend at the Apple Harvest Festival (Thank you, Susan, for jumping right in!). I learned that Susan started out in Obedience years ago then dabbled in Agility, Freestyle, Tricks, and Therapy work. She recently facilitated our Tricks Seminar so some of you may have already met her. She is also a member of Ma ttaponi Kennel Club. She has known Donna Thompson for years and become interested in being a member of BRDTC when she moved to Front Royal a year ago. Susan currently has a Corgi and Aussie, and her favorite activity is taking her dogs for walks. Welcome, Susan, to BRDTC! Debbie Vance Secretary

4 The Blues News Page 4 Picture Of the Month Wyeth Pitcher in the mud. Cheese Biscuits Ingredients: 1 1/2 c. Flour 1 1/4 c. Grated Cheddar 1/4 c. Veg. Oil 4 Tbl. Water Directions: Preheat oven 350 degrees. Cream the ingredients together, adding the water one tablespoon at a time to help bind the dough. When it begins to form a ball, roll it out on a floured surface, using cookie cutters, cut the dough into fun shapes and place on cookie sheet. Bake approx. 10 min. until lightly browned. Makes about 30 med. size biscuits I wanted to share that the board had discussed and approved $1000 in donations to local organizations ($500 each to AustinPetsAlive! & the SPCA of Houston), in response to the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Hopefully our donation will help ameliorate the situation for some of displaced. Take care, Donna Smith

5 Page 5 The Blues News Mark Your Calendar Hello fellow BRDTC members, The Metropolitan Washington Dachshunds Club will be holding an All-Breed Rally Trial on Saturday October 7, 2017 in our training room. We are hoping to have a good turnout for this event. We will have a Dachshund Only Obedience Trial early Saturday morning followed by the Rally. We plan to clean the turf on Thursday, October 5 th in the evening about 8PM. If you haven t met your necessary helping participation requirement for the club for this year, this is an excellent opportunity to do so or if you are planning to attend, you can help to ensure a clean surface for your dog. 6 The Blues News Page 6 BRDTC has been asked to participate in Demonstrations at the following festivals this fall: Here are the Demo dates for your calendar... 9/30 - Canine Carnival (Sherando Park) Demo 10-11am; gathering at 8:00am at training room to load truck 10/14 or 10/15 - Arborfest (Brandy Farm); tentative; Club will only do one day, day TBD If you are willing to participate in any of these demo days, please contact Ed Strawsnyder (c/ ; h/ ) or myself (c/ ). Personally, I enjoy these demos and believe you will, too. It is an excellent "free" training opportunity for your dogs. No stress - just fun for all! The spectators are impressed with anything we do so novice dogs are welcome. Also, it's a great way to get to know fellow club members. Hope you will give it serious consideration! ONE-DAY RALLY SEMINAR with AKC Rally Judges Joanie and Dave Brobst Saturday, October 14, 2017 ~ 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDOTC training room Crimora Recreation Center 1648 New Hope Road Crimora, VA Since 1985, the Brobsts have owned and trained Norwich Terriers. In Obedience our Norwich Terriers have obtained 4 CDs, 3 CDXs, 2 UDs, and 1 VER. At the time of the first UD, there were fewer than 10 Norwich Terriers with a UD in the USA. In Rally, they have obtained 3 RNs, 3 RAs, 2 REs, and 1 RAE. Our Norwich was the first Norwich in the country to earn the RAE title. In Freestyle, one of our Norwich earned a CFF Level 2 title and came in first in a group competition. We have titled one of our Norwich in agility obtaining the MX and AXJ titles. Our Therapy Norwich goes to a Nursing Home each week and sits with the residents while we call BINGO. Currently we are ready to show in AKC Open, most likely in the Preferred class and our new Norwich puppy is working on this and that. For many years, we have taught all levels of Obedience and Rally classes. We both are AKC Rally Judges and Dave is also an AKC Open level Obedience Judge. This seminar will cover what you need to know to show in the Rally classes and will cover all the new exercises and signs! It is suitable for beginners to advanced participants. Be prepared to work your dogs and HAVE FUN! WHAT TO BRING: You, your dog, a chair and crate. There is limited crating room, so additional dogs are discouraged, but we will try to be flexible! We have a heated small room for crating. The training room is not climate controlled so dress appropriately. Questions? 9 The Blues News Page 9 Data and I were by ourselves at Chesapeake Dock Dogs today. Data got himself into Master finals (not due to my throwing, either), and earned himself Second Place! Carol Nansel WAGS & BRAGS It's been an incredible day of showing. A double obedience trial given by Northeastern Maryland. First of all, congratulations to Andy Highland and Reckless, the wonder dog. They cleaned up. So very proud of my students. Some had placements and some had personal Q's. All are wonderful people that truly care about their dogs. Tubbs Q'd in all 4 classes with 3 placements and all scores over 195. I am humbled by the heart of this dog and his willingness to walk by my side. I go to bed tonight a blessed person. Patrice Fun day at the Belgian Sheepdog trial in Frederick. As lovely as Kindle's Standard run was, our JWW run was one Mr. Toad's wild ride. Kindle wanted to go straight at every turn, and there were several. Then she made the most spectacular weave entrance ever. Of course she wouldn't have needed to make a spectacular entrance if she hadn't scooted off towards the off course tunnel 30 feet away! I'll take that ugly Q! Caper got to stick her nose in several bags and coolers and almost climbed into Dad Marshall's lap in his wheelchair. At the end of the day, the girls got to go swimming again with friends Cricket (Lyn Kargaard) and Wile E (Helayne Silver). Janice Gibbs and Lacey had a good weekend on September 15 and the Potomac Valley Belgian Sheepdog Trial. Lacey was 4/4 and Gibbs 2/4, he got his first Open Standard and Open Jumpers legs. Sandy At the Harrisburg, PA cluster, my Doberman Kinsey earned her first 3 pt major. She now has 10 points. And at the end of July at a show cluster in Bloomsburg, PA, my Whippet Ashley won Group 1 in a Veterans Sweeps earned her Rally RAE7. Since then, she has earned 5 legs toward RAE8. Bobbie Lutz

Lisa Marino PMCT-2, KPA-CTP, CPDT-KA, FP-MT, CSAT Pat Miller Certified Trainer In Sept. Kinsey also earned her CAA (Coursing Ability Advanced) title. Bobbie Lutz Ladies and Gentlemen, This weekend, I passed the interview, written exam, and observation with the AKC Tracking Field Representative, Carol Ruthenberg. I will become a Provisional TD/TDU Judge when the AKC committee meets in October. Location of the event was the Golden Retriever Nationals in Salisbury, Maryland. Mary Ann Dean At the Shetland Sheepdog Specialty Lacy and Gibbs had another good day at agility. Lacy got QQ #8 towards PACH #2 and Gibbs got his 2 leg in open Jumpers. What a fine day with all these Shelties. Sandy

13 VA Federation Legislation Alice Harrington noted that this is an election year in VA. All the Delegate seats are up for election. The Senate is not. Please look carefully at all the candidates and their positions on dogs and breeding and see what you think. HSUS has launched two ballot initiatives one in Ohio against commercial dog breeders and one in California that wants to require that egg-laying chickens must be cage free. In 2008 HSUS got a happy chicken ballot initiative approved in CA that said they had to have more space by Over the years HSUS would never agree to what a new approved cage size was because they want NO CAGES. And here is that push now in 2017.HSUS is also using some different names as it continues its push to its presence and agenda at lower and lower levels. One is Humane DMV (stands for DC, Maryland, and Virginia). They are offering FREE training to shelters and law enforcement all over the country. This week in Fairfax, the shelter is being shut down for a whole day so the entire staff and volunteers can attend this training. This is how HSUS builds its base. They don t give any money to the shelters and rescues (they view rescue as a bottomless pit) but they cultivate PEOPLE so they can get followers and donations. Sharyn Hutchens attended a local meeting put on by HSUS in Lexington, VA on puppy mills. It is important for us to have involved people at the local and county levels so we can stay on top of where things are going. Sharyn and I try to stay on top of things going on in the state but it is hard to know it all. We rely on you folks to let us know what you are seeing in your areas. Gloria Jones reported on some of her legislative activities too. She is the Legislative Liaison for the Pekingese Club of America. She had reported on several bills in Maryland that had the potential to really impact hobby breeders. Fortunately the bills have not turned out to be as menacing as they first appeared. Gloria s efforts have led to a relationship between her and the National Capital Dog Training Club. VFDCB REGULAR Meeting 4 September 10, 2017 Gloria also attends the Fairfax County, Animal Services Advisory Commission meetings which are very informative.. VA Tech gets Theriogenology Residency Award (See July 2017 minutes for more info.) Dr. Cecere has advised us that their application for an AKC Canine Health Foundation Companion Animal Theriogenology Residency has been accepted. They have been awarded a grant of $99,036 and she thanked us for our support. Here is the link that describes the program:

14 Working Dog Project Dr. Cecere also noted the inception of the Working Dog Project. Here is a link to the website What is the Working Dog Project? Our goal is to find the genetic loci associated with key behavioral traits of military and service dogs. While decades of selective breeding practices have shaped the canine genome, we now look to genetics to guide our selection of dogs for specific training and career paths. The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard was launched in 2004 to use genomics to advance science and human health. In 2005, Broad scientists led an international team to decode the DNA of Tasha, the first ever dog sequenced. Since then, scientists have compared the DNA of hundreds of dogs and found millions of differences. Hidden in this complexity are the genetic variants shaping each dog's behavior. VFDCB REGULAR Meeting 5 September 10, 2017 We have a unique opportunity today to apply cutting edge technology to identify the genes driving dog behavior. This is a first critical step. With the key genetic factors found, we can strategically select better working dogs, which saves time, energy and dollars. Rarely do we have the opportunity to make such an impact for BOTH our national security and our disabled Americans. Please consider supporting the effort. More details on the research plan can be found at working_dog_proposal 1_.pdf 2nd Canine Breeder Excellence Seminar, October 14 VA Tech (Dr. Cecere) will host another Canine Breeder Excellence Seminar on October 14th. Mariane said that the Board had voted to donate $1,000 for the Seminar, like we did last year. The flyer on Seminar specifics is attached. Note that a Webinar option is available for those unable to attend in Blacksburg. Also see the attached flyer on the Liver Disease Study. VA Tech is recruiting dogs with chronic liver disease that would benefit from a liver biopsy. The meeting was then adjourned.
