Recipe of the Month: Lemon Chicken Piccata INGREDIENTS: 3 large skinless, boneless chicken halves, cut into 1/2 in. medallions salt and pepper (for taste) 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 2 tbsps vegetable oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1 cup low sodium chicken broth 1/2 lemon, thinly sliced CONTRIBUTOR: JONATHAN JJ JEROTZ Original recipe from 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tbsps capers, drained and rinsed 3 tbsps butter 2 tbsps minced italian (parsley) PREPARATION: P R E P T I M E C O O K T I M E 20 M I N S 30 M I N S Preheat oven to 200 degrees F. Place a serving platter into the oven to warm. Season the chicken breast pieces with salt and pepper and dredge them in flour. Shake off excess flour. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet; pan-fry the chicken pieces until golden brown on both sides, about 3 minutes per side. Work in batches and do not crowd skillet, adding oil as needed. Place the chicken pieces onto the warmed platter in the oven. When finished with all the chicken, drain most of the oil from the skillet, leaving a thin coating on the surface of the pan. Cook and stir the minced garlic in the skillet until fragrant, about 20 seconds. Pour in the chicken broth. Scrape and dissolve any brown bits from the bottom of the skillet. Stir in the lemon slices and bring the mixture to a boil. Let cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce reduces to about 2/3 cup, 5 to 8 minutes. Add the lemon juice and capers; simmer until the sauce is reduced and slightly thickened, about 5 minutes more. Drop the butter into the skillet and swirl it into the sauce by tilting the skillet until the butter is melted and incorporated. Add the parsley; remove from heat and set aside. T I P *Aluminum foil can be used to keep food moist, cook it evenly, and make clean-up easier Arrange the chicken medallions on serving plates and spoon sauce over each portion to serve.

A VALENTINES WORKOUT
A 10 Minute Love Handle Workout CONTRIBUTOR: JEFF BLACKWELL Full article on Let s be honest there s not a whole lot to love about love handles. They don t fit into your skinny jeans, and they can be pretty challenging to get rid of. Why, you ask? Since love handle fat sits on the side of the abdominal area, lots of people think that a typical ab workout will blast it away. This isn t the case. Love handles lie on top of the obliques, which are a very specific group of abdominal muscles. In order to really work those suckers, you have to target them precisely. That being said, it s a myth that you can spot reduce fat loss. Yes, you can target your obliques to maximize toning, but fat is lost through cardio and diet. We ve all heard that abs are made in the kitchen, and (unfortunately) it s true. You can do crunches until the cows come home, but unless you get rid of your excess fat through healthy eating, your toned abs will never be seen. So here s the best strategy for kicking your love handles to the curb: Repeat the following circuit 3 times, moving as quickly as possible from exercise to exercise. Do this routine 3 times a week. 40 WOODCHOPPERS (20 PER SIDE) Using one hand weight, stand with your feet hip-width apart with your weight on your left leg. Start by holding the weight in both hands up by your left shoulder. Next, twist to make a chopping motion down towards your right hip. Allow your feet and knees to pivot with the twist. Raise the weight back up to your left shoulder and repeat for 20 reps. Next work your right side. 50 RUSSIAN TWISTS Sit on your butt with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Your torso should be leaning back at a 45 angle to the floor. Hold a dumbbell with both hands. Lift your feet from the ground, crossing them at the ankles and balancing on your butt. From this position, twist your torso to the right and touch your dumbbell to the ground next to your body. Next, twist back over to the left touching the weight to the left side of your body. Repeat back and forth, all while balancing with your legs and torso raised off of the ground. 30 SIDE PLANK HIP LIFTS (15 PER SIDE) Get into side plank position with your elbow on the ground and your legs and hips resting on the ground. Engaging your abs and keeping your body in a straight line, raise the lower half of your body up off the ground into a straight plank position. Lower again and repeat. Do 15 on your right side, and then 15 on your left side. 30 BICYCLE CRUNCHES Lie on your back with your knees bent and your hands behind your head. Do not clasp your hands together. Engage your abs, lifting your shoulders and upper back off of the ground. At the same time, move your right elbow toward your left knee so that they meet in the middle of your body. Next, switch your position by bringing your left elbow to your right knee. Continue as quickly as possible while still keeping your torso raised up off the ground.

9 Things You Didn t Know About Poodles Full article on AUTHOR: Katherine Ripley CONTRIBUTOR: JAMES CARMODY Poodles are known for being the ultimate trendsetters in doggie fashion, but they have many other talents besides looking pretty. Here are nine things you probably didn t know about the Poodle: 1. They Originated In Germany We typically associate Poodles with the French, but the breed actually originated in Germany. For years it has been regarded as the national dog of France, where it was commonly used as a retriever. But the breed name comes from the German word, pudel or pudelin, which means to splash in the water. 2. They Were Bred To Be Hunting Dogs The Poodle was named after splashing in water because these dogs were originally bred to be water retrievers. Their job was to bring ducks and other birds back to their masters. They haven t lost their skills over the years. Some waterfowl hunters still use Poodles today. 3. The Poodle Cut Is Not a Fashion Statement It might be the ultimate doggie fashion statement today, but the traditional Poodle cut began being all about function, not fashion. Less hair would make the Poodle a more efficient swimmer, but also more vulnerable to the cold. To get the best of both worlds, Poodle owners placed puffs of hair around the joints and the upper torso to protect the joints and vital organs. 4. There Are Many Possible Hair Styles For Poodles Each Poodle haircut has very specific rules about where the puffs of hair should be and how long they should be. In order to compete as show dogs, adult Poodles have to have one of three hairdos: the Continental Clip, the Modified Continental Clip, or the English Saddle. Puppies in competitions must have the official Puppy Clip, which is an even length all over the body. There are many other hairstyles that are not acceptable for AKC competitions, but are quite acceptable as fashion statements. 5. There Are Three Sizes, But Only One Breed You might know that Poodles come in different sizes. Those are the standard, the miniature, and the toy. All the sizes fall under the same breed and are expected to comply with the same breed standard.
6. They Have Hair, Not Fur What s the difference between hair and fur? you may wonder. Fur grows up to a certain point and then falls off what we know as shedding. Hair does not fall out and never stops growing. Poodle hair, like human hair, can respond to hormonal changes in the body. Female Poodles can experience hair thinning or loss after having puppies. 7. Lots of Poodles Have Jobs Poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds. Their intellect and their eagerness to please make them great service dogs. Poodles can work as seeing eye dogs and assistance dogs for people with other physical disabilities. 8. A Team of Poodles Once Competed in the Iditarod The Iditarod dog sled race takes place every year in Alaska and is now restricted to northern dog breeds that are well-adapted to the cold. This rule restricting the breeds that can participate was adopted after a musher, named John Suter, attempted to compete with a team of standard Poodles in Some of the Poodles were so cold due to frozen feet and hair-matting problems that that they had to be dropped off at checkpoints. 9. Many American Icons Have Owned Poodles Elvis Presley was particularly fond of Poodles. He kept them as pets and frequently gave them to girlfriends. Other famous Poodle owners include Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, Katharine Hepburn, and Walt Disney. Looking to add this proud, highly intelligent and active breed to your family? 9 It s the start of a new year which means it s New Year s Resolution time. If you have vowed to buy a home this year, then it s time to get moving! Even if you re months away from hiring a Real Estate Agent and touring homes, there are things you need to do now to make that dream happen. After all, this is one of the biggest purchases of your life and it requires preparation. Getting the building blocks in place will ensure a seamless transition from renting to buying, upgrading or downsizing. In other words, keep the stress low. STEP #1: Automate your down payment savings. Saving for a down payment is often one of the biggest barriers to home-ownership. One way to jump start your savings is to automate your checking account to automatically save a small amount of your paycheck into a separate savings account or house fund. Plus, with down payment requirements as little as 3%, it won t take long to save what you need to buy that home. Amassing enough for a down payment takes discipline and perseverance, but setting up automatic savings can make it easier. If you never see the cash, you won t spend it. -Marcia Goodman, Realtor with Re/Max Gateway. STEP #2: Build your credit history and keep it clean. When you apply for a mortgage, lenders will want to see that you have been able to pay off past debts. This does not mean having no debt. Having no credit cards or bank loans means you wont have a credit history. The only way banks know if you will pay back your mortgage is if you have a history of taking debt and paying it down. This means staying on top of your student loans, credit cards and car loans and paying them on time. Credit bureaus recommend using no more than 30% of the credit available to you to maximize your credit scores. Warren Buffet is famous for saying, Price is what you pay, value is what you get. If you make purchases on credit, make sure you pay it off every month otherwise you might end up paying a lot more for something than it is worth. STEP #3: Practice living on a budget. Downsizing your spending now will allow you to save more for your down payment and pay down other debts to improve your credit score. A survey by the advisory firm The Collingwood Group, showed that consumers saving for a home are willing to forego modern conveniences in order to secure a down payment. Cutting out costs in your budget that you know you wouldn t miss and renegotiating terms on things you can t live without are a great way to start. STEP #4: Talk to a Mortgage Adviser. Did you know that getting advise from a Mortgage Adviser is free? Yup! It s one of the few professional services that doesn t cost you any money. When thinking about buying a home a Mortgage Adviser should be step #1. A great Mortgage Adviser can give you a baseline of where you are now and where you need to be for the best home financing options. Face it, on steps 1-3 above, you are basically guessing on what you need to do. A Mortgage Adviser can give you exact numbers on what you should be striving for. We put structure in your plan to help you achieve your home ownership goal! According to the data pulled from Google by iquanti, more Americans in 2017 made resolutions to be more healthy than any other resolution. Consider including or adding financial health to your list of 2018 resolutions. Trust me, taking the time will reduce stress and keep you more happy throughout the home buying process.
