SPINNING POM TOP 10 HAIRCUTS FOR POMERANIANS
INTRODUCTION If you re anything like me, your little Pom is one of the most beloved things to you in the world. They re sweet to look at, with an incredibly innocent face, beautiful eyes, a face full of smiles, and extremely soft hair! While you may love their hair just the way it is, shaping it into different haircuts can also be fun. Especially when it comes to such beautiful and strong hair, the sky s the limit for grooming your Pom with different haircuts. A Pomeranian s coat is based on the normal Spitz breed type, which means they have two coats, because these tiny canines are actually an offspring of a bigger breed of dogs who lived in Arctic climates. The first (inner) layer in adult Poms has short thickly grown hairs meant to keep them warm, while the second (outer) layer--known as the guard coat--is made of long guard hairs meant to shed moisture from snow. This is why your Pomeranian is so puffy! :) But it should be remembered that if you cut your Pom s hair too deep to a point that the inner layer is cut, it will never grow back to the wonderful puffiness Pomeranians are known for. Another major risk is in cutting their hair at an early age because then your Pom pup will never grow their full adult coat. Another concern is that if your Pom is ever shaved, their elbows and other body parts, which are generally covered with hair, will be exposed. This may give rise to sores when they lie down as there s no longer a barrier between the skin and ground. Now it s time to learn about ten amazingly cute ideas for your Pomeranian s next haircut! :)
1. L I O N C U T Your Pom can be turned into an adorable tiny lion with the lion cut! But you may be surprised to learn that the lion cut was originally practiced only on cats. It has just recently been included in the canine groomers list of offerings and your groomer may not be too experienced in giving Pomeranians a lion cut. So you ll have to first make sure your groomer has good experience with this cut on Poms. The most amazing part about the lion cut is that you can change it in several ways based on yours and your Pom s preference :) In fact, many other cuts, including the ones in this list, are just different variations of the lion cut. As you can imagine with the lion cut, the fur on your Pom s body, back, and belly as well as down the tail and hind legs is shaved very close to the skin. However, the fur on the head, neck, chest, and front legs are left as is so as to create the lion personality in your Pom. You can even keep the hair on the tip of your Pom s tail leaving a fun little tuft that will look exactly like a lion s tail!
If you don t have a lot of time to spend grooming your Pom, the kennel cut is a perfect choice! It s also a favorite for Pomeranian show dogs. It was invented to maintain the overall shape of the fur of professional show dogs but at a short length for show season. 2. K E N N E L C U T Due to the short length, the coats are easy to manage. During the off season of professional show dogs, it needs far less maintenance. Also, the length of the fur doesn t need to be anything specific; it just depends on your preferences :) The purpose of the kennel cut is to make it easy for you to manage show dogs in between shows while preventing their coats from growing too much out of their desired show cut. It s especially good when you love the look of professional show dogs when they show off their beauty, but don t want to brush them multiple times per day. I suggest to start with a longer coat because afterwards you can make the coat shorter if you find it too much to groom.
3. S H O W C U T As its name suggests, the show cut is the one that can be seen on all professional Pomeranian show dogs. This can be considered as the breed s standard cut customized particularly to the dimensions of your Pom so as to meet the requirements specified by the American Pomeranian Club. The show cut is meant to make your Pom look as close as possible to the breed standard. The show cut is one of the haircuts that can take a considerable amount of time. This means making your Pom sit in the groomer s chair patiently. That might be difficult! The main purpose of the show cut is to form an illusion of a dense fur on your Pomeranian with the fur around their paws trimmed carefully to form an illusion of tiny little feet trotting when walking. Special scissors known as thinners are used to trim down your Pom s ears to achieve a fuzzy teddy bear appearance. The purpose is to make the ears and feet distinguishable next to the fullbodied fur surrounding your Pom.
4. T E D D Y B E A R C U T Who doesn t like teddy bears? Everyone does! So what if you made your sweet Pom look like one? You d certainly love that, right? Well, you can do that with the teddy bear cut. This haircut makes your Pomeranian s face look rounded and ears protruding out just like a teddy. It essentially produces a bubbly appearance on your Pom s body, head, and paws, just like the ones seen on traditional teddy bears. Besides making your Pom look cuter than ever, this haircut is perhaps the safest because you can maintain your Pom s long fur. This not only gives your Pom the resemblance of a teddy, but it s also adaptable to various weather conditions. While you can always decide what length the hair should end up being, remember to avoid cutting it too short so as to prevent any harm to your Pom s guard coat.
5. L A M B C U T The lamb cut is becoming more and more popular among Pom parents because it can define the natural contours of your Pom. It s an excellent cut for highlighting the points of their ears and snouts while preserving their soft fluffy features. As its name suggests, the lamb cut is expected to give your Pom a lamblike look with its soft and lush fleece coat. Although not as popular as more traditional cuts like the kennel cut, the lamb cut is relatively easier to handle for your groomer. You can easily take a photo of another Pomeranian with the lamb cut, show it to your groomer, and ask them to copy it. That s of course if they re not already familiar with the lamb cut.
6. P U P P Y C U T Similar to the lamb cut and teddy bear cut, the puppy cut doesn t come under the category of traditional grooming. This cut is pretty different and totally breaks up the lines your Pomeranian traditionally has, nearly making them look like a completely different dog breed! With the puppy cut, your Pom s fur will be cut shorter than the standard length of the breed and it ll give your Pom a uniform length of hair down their neck. The fur on the head will be cut in such a way that your Pom s ears will look like two small points on the top. The puppy cut has become extremely popular, particularly on social media, because it makes your pom look like an adorable cartoon character :) Thus, your groomer will have no problem in understanding which cut you want for your Pom!
7. B I C H O N H E A D C U T The Bichon head cut is inspired by the Bichon Frise show cut, but only up to the head. Generally, Pomeranians don t have the hair density of the Bichon Frise, thus the reason they re not able to get a full Bichon Frise show cut. The Bichon Frise looks like a child s play toy and the Bichon cut is meant to recreate that appearance for your Pom! The fur on your Pom s head should be cut either in a square or circle, according to how well it can hold either shape. The remaining fur on your Pom s body should be cut down to a uniform length all around. Pomeranians do have thick hair, but they have the double coat that the Bichon Frises don t have (they have a single coat). Therefore, it becomes difficult to give your Pom the exact look of a Bichon Frise.
8. M O H A W K C U T The mohawk cut hasn t become very popular yet, but definitely has a eye catching look to it. In any case, a Pomeranian is a happy and active tiny ball of energy. If your Pom was a person, he might just give himself a mohawk! The mohawk cut involves a straight line of long fur starting at the top of your Pom s head and going down the back to the tail. The fur on the rest of the body should be cut relatively shorter, though not too short (which can be dangerous!). You may have to show the picture of this cut to the groomer because it might be something they ve never heard of for a Pom! How expensive the cut would be or how long your Pom has to sit in the groomer s chair is totally unknown because most professional groomers haven t yet included this style in their list of haircuts. But it s totally worth a try! :)
9. H A L F A N D H A L F C U T The half and half cut is an interesting haircut and can achieve a very appealing look for your Pom! As its name suggests, this cut distinguishes the front and back halves of your Pom s body with different lengths of fur. The fur on the rear half is cut short, while that on the front half--on the face, chest, front legs, and paws--are left as is. After getting this cut, your Pom will look like what most people expect a Pomeranian to look like. Not a lion, not a lamb, not a teddy bear, nor any other animal. Again, you have to remember not to cut the back fur too short. This cut will give your Pom good protection from the outside elements, they ll look like an actual Pomeranian, and the grooming session should be quite short. This cut is clearly gaining popularity!
1 0. P O L A R B E A R C U T The polar bear cut for Pomeranians is a lot like the teddy bear cut. While the teddy bear cut can be done to a Pomeranian of any color, a polar bear cut is best for white Poms. A polar bear is very cute to look at, and by giving this cut to your Pom you ll have a tiny polar bear running around your house! :) This cut can be achieved by keeping the fur of your Pom around 2 inches long all over the body rather than emphasizing the bear look in the face as in the teddy bear cut. This cut is highly adaptable to climate as the double coat of your Pom s fur is still well maintained. On top of that, you get the cute look of a puffy, pure white polar bear with a charming black snout!
CONCLUSION All these haircuts for your Pom are doubtlessly cute and can offer your Pom an even more adorable look than what Poms originally have! However, you shouldn t only be giving them quality haircuts. You also need to take care of their coats so that they re healthy, shiny, and thick enough to protect their body from the elements. Give them a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients, especially food with essential Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids as well as Vitamin E. You should also take care of keeping fleas, ticks, and other pests away from your pet because they can adversely affect their coat, especially when your pet scratches and bites. It s also important to keep your Pom s surroundings clean and to regularly give them the proper supplements to keep those crummy creatures away. Once your Pom pup begins moulting and shedding hair, it s essential to brush their coat thoroughly to remove old hair. If you skip these suggestions, it s almost guaranteed that your Pom s coat quality will degrade. In the end, it s so important that you pay close attention to your Pomeranian s hair so that you can enjoy and be proud of their soft, puffy, and healthy coat. So what are you waiting for? Go give your Pom one of these amazingly cute cuts! :)
