4 Celebrating 40 Years of Obedience Training in 2011 Presidents Report irstly I would like to welcome all our new handlers and welcome back to all of you who are returning after our Christmas New Year break. We are all hoping that unlike last year the weather will be kind to us and training will commence on Tuesday 7 TH February. RALLY-O TRIALS 2012 promises to be a very exciting year with the start of official Rally Obedience trials (yes you will be able to get titles for your dogs in the various levels of Rally O). Our first official Rally O trial will be held at our Easter competitions at the start of April. Our trusty Trial Secretary Louise has organised an extensive program of trials for obedience, agility and Rally O throughout the year so make sure you have your dogs trained and ready to compete at Easter. See page 31 for the Club s 2012 Trial Calendar. For those of you that have never competed but are interested in giving it a go come and see the ladies at the counter on Tuesday evenings to find out more about our great dogs sports and remember once you are in Class 3 you can come down to Thursday training to find out more about what is required when entering competitions ANNUAL PRESENTATION NIGHT AND BREAK UP Last year ended on a high note with our annual presentation night at the Motor Boat Club. As usual Diane MacIntyre did a stellar job of organising the individual title trophy engraving and the perpetual trophies for our excellent competitors. Diane and her partner Rod also did a wonderful job of decorating the venue and of course we were all entertained by Diane s annual quiz. If you haven t attended one of these events you should really put it on your calendar for this year it is a very entertaining evening. HELPERS REQUIRED!! As always we as a Club are looking for helpers for all our activities so if you are interested in learning about obedience, Rally O or agility competitions why not come down and volunteer to help at our trials. We welcome all the assistance we can get no matter how small and I promise we won t throw you in at the deep end!! We are also looking for any volunteers willing to assist with the catering at our trials. The club is also looking for any members interested in training to become instructors on Tuesday evenings. If you and your dog have made it to class 4 and are interested in being involved in training other handlers and dogs then come and see Noel or myself any Tuesday evening. 5 Celebrating 40 Years of Obedience Training in 2011 REGISTERED HANDLER OR CLUB MEMBERSHIP?? When you sign up for obedience lessons you have the choice of joining the club as a Registered Handler or Club Member. Most handlers will choose to join as a Registered Handler which allows you to attend classes each week and participate in any external Club activities ie RSPCA s Million Paws Walk or Dogs on Riverway. However, if you wish to become more involved in the Club by taking on an Office Bearer or Instructor position, or participate in competitions, you will need to be a Club Member. There is no charge or timeframe to swap from Registered Handler to Club Member, so if you would like to do so please see the ladies at the clubhouse on Tuesday night. Registered Handler Pays Registered Handler Fee of $25 single or $30 family (2 or more dogs being handled by two or more family members) which is valid from 1 July to 30 June. Registrations paid in May and June will be valid for the following financial year. If you do not renew your Registration of Membership you can no longer attend training and your name will be removed from the Club s list. Don t make the mistake of treating your dogs like humans, or they ll treat you like dogs - 3 -

6 Celebrating 40 Years of Obedience Training in 2011 Just Briefly. Keep up tp date with the rules for Obedience, Rally-O, Agility, Endurance and Tracking as issued by the ANKC. They are free to download from their website Club T-Shirts are available from the Club Shoppe on Tuesday night. They are made from a durable cotton material, great for wearing to training, at trials to fly the Club s colours, and will last forever! Cost - $46. Also available at very reasonable prices are cloth webbing leads, martingale collars, treat bags and bags of treats. The Club Library is open the first and fourth Tuesdays of each month. We have small but interesting range of books suitable for the beginner to the advanced handler, so come into the clubhouse and have a chat to our Librarian Sheila about what you can borrow. There are no fees, and books can be borrowed for a fortnight. Thursday night training is a great opportunity to have one-on-one training with an experienced instructor. If you have a particular problem that you are having difficulties with, want to prepare for entry into a competition or simply want to take advantage of an extra night s training you are welcome to attend. Training commences around 6.30pm for about an hour, and after your session with the instructor can practice more on your own. It s free! Have you enjoyed your classes, love dogs, and would like to help others train theirs? The club has openings for several Trainee Instructors. You will be paired with an experienced instructor who will take you through week by week theory and practical on how to train handlers to train their dogs. All instructors are volunteers who started off just like you taking a dog through classes, graduating into Class 4, and then becoming interested in the training program. 7 Calling all Class 4 handlers!! Handlers who have graduated from Class 3 are welcome to continue their training in Class 4 from pm on Tuesday night. This Class is less structured than Classes 1-3, but can be used to start learning new obedience exercises like heel off lead, change of position, broad jump, and retrieving the dumb bell or just keep his skills up to date. It is a great way to keep your dog active, socialised, and mentally stimulated. Feel free to let your Instructor know what you would like to learn on the night as classes are quite flexible. Hendra virus continues to be a concern among horse owners, and the recent development of a case recorded in a dog is worrying. Let us hope that a vaccine is soon found. For more info on this virus and dogs visit Flyball training is on the first and third Thursday from 7.30pm 8.30pm. Perfect for ball mad furkids and heaps of fun for all. 19 LIFE MEMBERSHIP AWARD Renate Linder joined the club in 1997 with her Belgian Shepherd Lumpi. After a few years training with other club members our then treasurer Colin discovered she had experience with accounting so he managed to persuade her to take on the position of Assistant Treasurer. Renate took this position for 2 years and then when Colin left she was automatically promoted to the position of Treasurer, a position she still holds to this day. Most members and handlers will know Renate as the face behind the counter on training nights, a job she has done without fail come rain, hail or shine since taking on the Treasurer job. Renate is also always there to give advice, help with the correct fitting of collars or just general advice on dog handling and training, and she has also been a regular instructor in the Class 4 ring both during Tuesday training and on Thursdays as well. Renate also is an invaluable asset to the club helping at all the trials organising the setup of obedience and agility and of course we all know Renate knows how to pack the trailer. Renate has also spent many hours this year assisting with the tracking including laying and stewarding tracks. Finally but by no means least Renate is always happy to billet and feed our visiting judges. I believe Renate is a worthy candidate for the nomination of life membership. 22 WHY TRAIN YOUR DOG? PRECONCEIVED IDEAS The dog is a dog it doesn t need any training. I ve had dogs before and I can handle it. I ve got a big back yard, it ll be right. Why do I need to train it? It ll be OK. These, and many more preconceived ideas, come to the minds of many people. Did you know that the average age of a dog in Australia is three years old? That a dog grows approximately fifteen times faster than we do in the first year and ten times faster in the second? That a dog sees moving objects at almost lightning speed? That their reflexes are much faster than ours? That a dog has only one thought in its conscious mind at a time, and that his current conscious thought is changed instantly by a new sight, sound or smell? Can you keep up with that? That is why dogs get out of hand so quickly in the family home, and many are euthanized in the first two years. How sad is that? A little more education and this will cease to happen. KEEPING YOUR NEW DOG OR PUP Large or small, each dog is much better behaved if it is taken out into the big wide world which it hasn t experienced yet. The earlier the better. Under good supervision, and given the right information, the dog and you will be better able to handle any situation that arises. Dogs, of course, can be the greatest companions you will ever have. They ask for so little :- food, a bed, a walk, care and understanding. These are the basic requirements for happiness together. Your dog or dogs will give you a lifetime of joy, companionship, loyalty, and sometimes security. EARLY TRAINING What a puppy learns between the ages of 8 to 16 weeks forms the basis of its adult life. Good habits are formed during this time and future unwanted habits avoided. This young pup needs to experience different smells, noises, places, people and the many shapes, sizes and smells of other dogs. (Make sure your pup is fully vaccinated. Parvo is endemic in NQ - Ed). The pup soaks up these new experiences like a sponge and stores them away for future peace of mind. The pup should not be allowed to overreact to any of these things or to anything else it encounters as a first experience in order to handle them in the future without stress in its life. OLDER AND STABLE DOGS Older dogs are never too old to be taught. No matter how good they have been, they too can develop bad habits very quickly. We often underestimate the dog s ability to learn. Just moving house can be scarey for a dog, and getting another dog can upset the balance. If you are not aware of what is going through the dog s mind then, very soon, you may find your dog has developed a whole set of bad habits, some of which are very much unwanted. He may be losing some of his hearing or sight. You need to check these things out with older dogs. OUR UNDERSTANDING & LOVE OF OUR DOG While this is happening we humans need to do our part. Understand why the dog does the things it does can come through intelligent training of the handler and other family members. You can take a well-trained dog anywhere you go. It doesn t chew your plants, bit the children or annoy the neighbours by its barking. A strong bond needs to be formed between dog and owner. It needs a Pack Leader an Alpha and this needs to be you. If you are the Alpha (Top Dog) then both you and your dog will have a wonderful life. Just be firm, consistent, constant, calm and confident. 23 SUPER DOGS ARE MADE, NOT BORN For those who may have received a pup for Christmas or are considering purchasing one in the near future, have a read of this article. It gives week by week advice on what to do and what not to do in the vital first weeks of a pups life that can influence its behaviour into adulthood. Behavioural Tip When leaving the house don t make a big fuss in saying goodbye to your dog. The dog becomes all excited because of your behaviour as he thinks something is about to happen, like a walk or drive in the car. All of a sudden you leave and the place falls into silence, leaving the dog wondering why you have left him. Every time this occurs the dog starts to dread your behaviour, knowing that he is going to be left alone. This can be the start of separation anxiety with destructive behaviour like digging and chewing or barking for hours on end, much to the annoyance of neighbours. And the dog ultimately gets blamed for bad behaviour when it isn t his fault at all. So next time you are about to leave the house refrain from making a big fuss. Instead, give him a treat or a bone and exit calmly. He will start looking forward to you leaving as he knows he will get a treat! Summer is well and truly here with reports in the local media of people collapsing of heat stress around the region. So with us humans feeling the heat, why on earth would anyone take their dog out jogging or make their dog run alongside a bike? The owners are sweating buckets while the poor dog lopes alongside trying to dispel their excess body heat in the only way they have through the tongue by puffing and panting. It is all too obvious and of concern that many dog owners are unaware of how quickly a dog can die of heat stress as it is unable to sweat like we can. In the meantime take your dog for a walk, and go bike riding or jogging alone while it is so hot. When you leave behind a dog because it grew too old, your children will learn a lesson. 27 WHAT DOG IS THAT?? General Appearance The Azawakh is a West African sighthound of afro-asiatic type, which appeared in Europe towards 1970 and comes from the Nigerian middle basin, and, among others, from the Valley of the Azawakh. For hundreds of years, he has been the companion of the nomads of the southern Sahara. Particularly leggy and elegant, the Azawakh gives a general impression of great fineness. His bone structure and musculature are transparent beneath fine and lean skin. This sighthound presents itself as a rangy dog. Standing up to 74cm tall, the Azawakh has a short, fine coat which may come in any colour or colour combinations: - red, clear sand to fawn, brindled, parti-colour (which may be predominantly white), blue, black and brown. The head may have a black mask and there may be white markings on the legs, bib and at the tip of tail. A Look Back Traditionally, the Azawakh is the companion of the Tuareg nomads in the sub-sahelian desert. The breed is referred to as "Aidi n'ailluli," meaning "Noble Dogs of the Free People." The Azawakh is considered a full member of the family, entrusted with protecting the encampment and flocks from invaders. Agile and possessing great endurance, it also hunts hare, antelope and wild boar to provide its family with meat. You will find these dogs sleeping on the low straw roofs of their owners in the villages of Mali. If night predators such as the hyena approach, the Azawakh will jump down and start chasing them. They will quickly form a pack with the other Azawakhs and chase the impostors away. These dogs are exceptionally fast when running, and can reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour. TODAY Although extremely loyal and deeply affectionate with its family, the Azawakh has the sharpest temperament of all the sighthound breeds. Azawakhs are fiercely protective of their people and territory. When properly introduced to strangers, the Azawakh's initial reaction may range from accepting, indifferent or avoidant to friendly and affectionate. The Azawakh is intelligent but possesses great independence, so training and socialization must start early. It is not particularly easy to train as its hunting instincts are still very strong and some countries do not allow them off lead. As with all sighthounds, training for the breed should be positive and reward based. Harsh treatment or punishment based training will inevitably destroy the Azawakh spirit and cause mistrust, fear or aggression. This active dog has strong guarding and hunting instincts, and requires daily exercise for both mind and body fitness. The breed made its debut in America in the 1980's and with the correct training is doing well in obedience and agility. The Azawakh has only recently been recognised by the Australian Kennel Council but at the moment there are very few animals in Australia

28 BLOODSUCKER SEASON IS WITH US As Australia swings into another La Niña weather event, pet owners are being reminded about the importance of guarding against parasitic insects that can spread from pets to people. Approximately 21 per cent of all notifiable diseases in Australia are zoonotic meaning that they are transmitted from animals to people. 1 While potentially deadly animal-borne pathogens like Hendra virus grab the headlines, the reality is that the most likely nasties people are going to come into contact with are from biting parasites, like fleas and ticks that can plague their pets, Dr Cameron Webb, Entomologist, University of Sydney, said. According to Dr Cameron, fleas love warm and moist conditions, so with another La Niña weather pattern predicted there s a bumper parasite season on the way. Fleas love humid and warm weather and it is expected that during the coming summer, flea populations will thrive. With 63% of Australian households owning a pet, Dr Webb believes cat and dog owners should be aware of the risk of increased flea activity and what that means for their pet and their family. A flea may be small but it has powerful back legs that enable it to jump incredible distances. In human terms, it s like being able to jump the length of a football field, Dr Webb said. Fleas are not just a problem for cats and dogs; they are more than happy biting people as well. Bites most often occur on the lower legs and while the bites won t last more than a few days, they can cause significant irritation. According to Dr Bob Rees, Technical Services Veterinarian, Bayer Healthcare, it s important to remember that fleas are only a problem for people because they share their home with pets. The best thing you can do is treat your pets with a product that kills both juvenile and adult fleas, and stops them from biting. It s also important to treat areas where your pet moves about, like its bedding. Pets are such an important part of our family and that relationship shouldn t be marred by a bout of fleas. Prevention is obviously the best approach and there are effective treatments available to ensure your entire family is protected from fleas, Dr Rees added. Fleas and pets Fleas love cats and dogs. Not only are they a tasty meal on legs, but they provide the perfect home to raise a family. Female fleas can lay up to 25 eggs a day on our fury pets. These eggs are transferred to bedding or other areas the dog commonly comes into contact with like carpet or lounge areas. They can hatch within days or delay hatching until conditions are suitable. When eggs hatch a larval stage is produced, this then develops into a pupa. The pupal stage can lay dormant for up to a year, waiting for a cat, dog or person to walk past and reanimate them to life. Fleas feed on the blood of dogs or cats, but the larval stage will also survive on bits of skin or organic material usually found in the animal s bedding. If there is a flea infestation, owners should obviously treat their pet but they also should treat areas where the pet commonly occupies. Complications The most common flea which causes grief in people, cats and dogs is the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis).the flea is a blood sucking insect, causing irritation, itching and scratching. Some dogs are super sensitive to flea saliva, with bites causing unbearable itching through flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). Scratching can lead to nasty skin lesions, known as hot spots which can progress to more severe bacterial skin infections that are difficult to treat. Puppies and sick dogs are vulnerable to anemia and may even die from blood loss in heavy infections. Fleas are also carriers of intestinal parasites like tapeworm, which can be passed on to family members. There are a number of flea and tick control methods available ranging from collars, spot-ons, shampoos and tablets that can also control heart & intestinal worms. 29 GIARDIA INFECTIONS Being a German Shorthaired Pointer, my dog Caesar loves to swim in the river at the Gleeson s Weir off leash park. He also drinks from the river and inevitably ends up with a dose of Giardia, especially in summer (the best time to have a swim, of course!) when the sediment is stirred up by rain and runoff and the parasite seems more prevalent. Diane MacIntyre Editor What is Giardia? Giardia lamblia is a protozoan (single celled organism) parasite which is found in the small intestine of vertebrates including mammals. Infection with Giardia lamblia causes giardiasis. Giardia causes severe diarrhea, dehydration & stomach cramps. How do dogs become infected with Giardia? The most likely transmission in dogs is direct animal to animal (fecal-oral route). Dogs can also become infected by drinking water (rivers, creeks, drains) containing the infective cysts. Once inside the intestine the cyst opens releasing two trophozoites. There are two stages to the life cycle. Trophozoites are the active motile (swimming) form & it is in this stage that lives in the intestines feeding & reproducing. The trophozoites have flagella, which are long hair like structures which enables toe protozoa to move around. During the feeding stage, the parasite replicates in the small intestine by binary fission (this is the asexual reproductive process where one cell divides into two cells). The trophozoites move towards the colon where they produce a cyst wall. The trophozoite within the cyst divides once, and this mature cyst now contains two trophozoites. This cyst is carried away by the passing fecal stream & leaves the body. These cysts are extremely hardly and can survive for long periods in water. What are the symptoms of Giardia in dogs? The parasite has a one to two week incubation period. Most dogs are asymptomatic, although they may keep passing on cysts for months or years. Clinical signs are most likely to be seen in younger animals from multi-dog households/environments. If large numbers of trophozoites develop the dog will develop symptoms which include :- Foul smelling stools, often yellowish, foamy/frothy. Vomiting Weight loss Flatulence Abdominal distension How is Giardia diagnosed? Fecal flotation (zinc sulfate solution) may be used to detect cysts. Cysts may not be present in the stool of a dog with diarrhoea. Fecal smears may detect the active trophozoites. These are more likely to be seen moving around in watery stools & cysts are more commonly found in firm stools. A negative sample doesn't necessarily rule out giardiasis. Three stool samples should be studied over a period of 7-10 days before a definite diagnosis is made. ELIZA is another method of testing for giardiasis. This may either be performed in your veterinarian's office of sent off to a laboratory for testing. How is giardiasis treated? There are several drugs available and your veterinarian will prescribe whichever one they feel is best to treat giardiasis in your dog. Can I catch giardiasis from my dog? This answer is still not entirely known so it is safe to err on the side of caution & presume it is possible to catch giardiasis from dogs & practice strict hygiene. 30 Canine Cheese Cookies 1 cup rolled oats 1/3 cup butter 1 cup water ¾ cup breadcrumbs 1 teaspoon beef stock ½ cup milk 1 cup grated cheddar cheese 1 egg, beaten 3 cups wholemeal flour Boil water. Combine oats, butter & water. Let stand for 10 minutes. Stir in breadcrumbs, stock, milk, cheese & egg. Mix well. Add flour, a cup at a time, mixing well after each addition to form a stiff dough. On a floured surface, knead remaining flour until dough is smooth & no longer sticky about 3-4 minutes. Roll or pat out dough to 1cm thickness. Cut with bone shaped cookie cutter. Place 2cm apart on greased cookie tray. Bake in preheated oven at 160 degrees for 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool completely before storing in air tight container
