We all had a bad scare in August when the Ministry of Health confirmed that the Zika virus had spread locally within Singapore. he danger of Zika clusters is reduced now, but the dangers posed by mozzies remain. Zika, like Dengue and Chikungunya, is transmitted by our old enemies, Aedes mosquitoes. We have to control these mozzies to control the three viral diseases they carry. It s a battle that must be fought every day, by every Singaporean. Know your enemy. If you understand her life cycle, you will understand why it is important to do the Mozzie Wipeout every day. he female Aedes mosquito becomes infective about seven days after she has bitten someone carrying the Zika, Dengue or Chikungunya virus. Peak biting is at dawn and dusk. 5 Waste not and save more Held over the weekend of 5 November opposite Khatib MR, Clean and Green Singapore 2016 had a new focus on cutting down food waste in all corners. hink of your favourite food. ish and chips. Chicken rice. Bak chor mee. Yum. Now, order two servings of that dish. And then throw everything away. Who would do that? But in 2015, we wasted some 800 million kilos of food in Singapore, which is two bowls per person per day. he waste came from every part of the food cycle from food centres to households. With a little planning and foresight, we can all help stop this waste and save ourselves a pretty penny in so doing. Cook smart Nothing is healthier and tastier than a home-cooked meal. Keep track of what s expiring and use those first. Cook just enough, or plan to eat leftovers and pack to share with friend and neighbours. Share smart Scared not enough, is often the start to a table full of half-eaten dishes. Order what you think should be enough and, if it isn t, just order some more. Going green isn t hard at all. 6 talk of the town He won the Best Cleaner award now he s the Supervisor! Mr Chan Yew Ghee won the Best Cleaner award for HDB estates this year. It was no surprise to his residents. Mr Koh, Ah Ghee s site manager, says, he residents really like him. He ll finish the blocks, have a rest and a cup of coffee. hen he goes up again to double-check that things are right. hat s why they re so happy. We had promoted him before he won the prize. Now he s a very hands-on supervisor. Got a very good attitude. He s been working with Ban Chuan Cheng Services, one of the own Council s conservancy contractors, for eight years now. He started with them doing odd painting jobs, cementing and other repair work, before he switched to cleaning at Blocks 7,8, 8A, 17 and 18 in Ghim Moh. He and his wife used to run a hardware store in Bukit Merah, but when that closed down, I had nothing to do! So he took the job with Ban Chuan. It s healthy exercise. You re outside most of the day. And it s nice to say hello to the aunties and uncles. he money s okay. But you must have the heart for this job. Some cleaning should not be necessary he hours are 8am to 5pm. Sometimes a bit later. How to make our lifts even safer and more reliable A lift taskforce was set up in July by the 15 PAP town councils, chaired by Dr eo Ho Pin. heir task was to study ways and means of improving lift safety and reliability. he town councils have accepted their recommendations and set aside $45 million to implement them. In November the taskforce made several recommendations, among them steps to improve lift servicing and maintenance and methods to monitor the performance of lift contractors and the lifts themselves. o enhance lift safety the taskforce recommended extra checks and maintenance for five critical lift components: the door mechanisms, inductor switch, brakes, over-speed governor and levelling system. It also recommended that all lifts be fitted with CCVs connected to a lift surveillance system. his would monitor the lifts around the clock for security and safety. Good if you get stuck in the lift, and a good way of catching those who vanadalise the lifts. Vandalism and misuse are common causes of lift failures, the taskforce said. he $45 million earmarked for lift improvements excludes replacing older lifts that are due for replacement during cyclical maintenance work. he taskforce also recommended that all town councils revise the minimum time allocated for lift servicing based on the number of lift landings, the design of lifts and the new Building and Construction Authority requirements. Based on a time and motion study conducted by the Lift askforce, we recommend an average of 100 minutes per lift for lift servicing subject to the number of lift landings, the taskforce said in a statement. Monitoring the lift contractors Other recommendations include a joint dashboard management system to monitor the performance of lifts and the contractors who service the lifts. he PAP town councils will also implement the HDB s Lift Enhancement Programme, which will see the HDB spend about $450 million over ten years co-funding 90 per cent of the work involved in modernising older lifts. he PAP town councils will prioritise the LEP implementation over the next ten years based on the age and performance of the lifts, the taskforce said.
