Spraying areas with reported concentrations of mosquitoes Checking mosquito breeding sites Setting traps to determine the types of mosquitos in different areas Treating standing water from rain events Spraying areas requested by residents Performing aerial spraying, truck, and hand spraying

3 Zika Virus: Mosquito Type Spread primarily through mosquito bites Aedes-aegypti mosquito o Dengue fever o Yellow fever o West Nile fever o Chikungunya o Eastern equine encephalitis Found on all continents (except Antartica) Distinctive black and white markings on body and legs

8 Collaboration: Florida Department of Health Broward County and Mosquito Control World Health Organization declared the spread of the Zika virus an international public health emergency on February 1, 2016 Work together to monitor and report cases of Zika virus Notification of every suspected case in Broward County o More than 215 suspected cases logged o Confirmed imported cases: 17 (as of 5/26/16) Each case is prioritized

9 Prioritization of Each Case Travel history o High-incidence areas = increase possible infection Symptoms-onset timeline o Approximate transmission period o Incubation o Possible disease carriers U.S. arrival date o Infectious period o Disease transmission through other mosquito bites

10 Zika Virus: Breaking the Cycle All locations of suspected cases are fumigated Entomological evaluation to determine additional spraying BG-Sentinel Traps Ovitraps Insecticides o Biomist 3+15 Applied using truck fumigation system o Duet, Synthetic Pyrethrins Applied using ULV backpack spray system o Dibrom Applied using airplane spray system Bti, Natural Larvicide o Applied directly to bodies of water
