Martin Yan returns to KQED with the new series Yan Can Cook: Spice Kingdom, through which he ll explore the local flavors of Chengdu the capital of southwestern China s Sichuan province. Recognized as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2010, Chengdu is brimming with delicious dishes and snacks on every street. Watch as Yan uncovers the traditions, places and people at the heart of Chengdu s thriving food scenes, from attending a bamboo banquet to visiting a few of the city s estimated 30,000 hot pot restaurants. Yan goes beyond Chengdu s typical Sichuan classics such as Mapo Tofu, Kung Pao Chicken and Ganbian Sijidou (dry stir-fried green beans) and journeys deep into the hidden corners of the region s cuisine to discover the rich cultural and culinary traditions of southwestern China. In 13 episodes, Yan takes viewers throughout the Spice Kingdom and then shows them how to create dishes based on what he s learned. And no excuses for not trying out these recipes in your own kitchen because if Yan Can Cook, So Can You! Yan has spent his career promoting Chinese cuisine. Born in Guangzhou in southern China, Yan is a secondgeneration culinarian, who was first inspired by his mother in the tiny kitchen of their family restaurant. After receiving his formal restaurant training in Hong Kong, Yan immigrated to Calgary, Canada, where, on one snowy day, he was asked to appear on a news program to demonstrate Chinese cooking. The rest, as they say, is television history. Premiering in 1982, Yan Can Cook grew to become one of the most popular cooking programs on public television, both in North America and on the global stage. Yan has hosted more than 1,500 episodes of Yan Can Cook, broadcast in over 50 countries. The series has twice won the James Beard Award for Best Food Documentary Show. KQED Presents is proud to represent Yan Can Cook: Spice Kingdom nationally, which will be distributed via American Public Television in Spring Yan Can Cook: Spice Kingdom premieres Wednesday, February 14, at 7pm on KQED 9. Join Martin Yan and PBS Food for Chinese New Year The Year of the Dog kicks off Friday, February 16! No Chinese New Year is complete without a home-cooked feast, and this year, Martin Yan and PBS Food are teaming up to bring the best to your table. How can educators help students explore and discuss the differences that divide us? Stanford professors Condoleezza Rice and David Kennedy teamed up across party lines to ask these questions in the new film American Creed. The one-hour documentary features stories of unlikely activists, including baseball manager Joe Maddon, novelist Junot Diaz and others who come together to build community around the values that unite us. Interspersed among the stories, first-generation college students discuss what the American Creed means to them. In partnership with the National Writing Project and Facing History and Ourselves, KQED is hosting an advanced screening of American Creed for educators, 5-8pm on Thursday, February 22, at KQED s San Francisco studios. KQED invites educators to meet the filmmakers Sam Ball and Kate Stilley Steiner, and learn about how to spur conversation, writing and media-making with your students based on the themes in American Creed. There will be food, drinks, special giveaways and time to connect with other educators. Spots are limited and open to anyone who teaches young people in a classroom, after-school program or a community organization. 14 Brokenwood, New Zealand is a small, rural town where memories and animosities run deep. When Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd arrives on assignment to investigate a possible murder, he begins to reassess his life and decides to stay on indefinitely. As he settles into the quieter country life, he forges relationships with his colleagues, including Detective Constable Kristin Sims who initially questions his unusual method of doing things. 18 Sudan is the last male of his sub-species, the Northern White Rhinoceros. Watch as Nature chronicles his harrowing journey on The Last Rhino through the international cast of characters who have been involved in Sudan s life, from when he was snatched as a calf from his mother s side in war-torn Central Africa, to his captivity as a prized exhibit in a cold, concrete zoo behind the Iron Curtain while poaching devastated his kind to extinction back home. Now 43 years old and half-blind, Sudan is living out his days under 24-hour armed guard, on a protective sanctuary in Kenya.
