President s Report Well what a show our 33rd Annual Koi Show turned out to be the weather gods finally had their day and played havoc with our festivities, however despite the difficulties I am very happy with the support and camaraderie shown by all the participants. A huge congratulations to all the helpers and exhibitors, especially those exhibiting for the first time. The quality of the koi was again very pleasing and with 288 koi Size 2 to Size 6 on display, it was a fantastic exhibition. I would like to offer my formal thanks to Mr Willem Daffue (South Africa) and Mr Allen Bennett (Perth) for travelling such a long way to act as our Judges. Also a special thank you to Lee Nguyen (AKA Trainee Judge) and Miki Mo (KSWA Trainee Judge) for all their efforts through out the judging. Thank you Judges. I was very pleased when our Judges selected as best koi on the day, the GC prize to Ron and Max s superb Kumonryu. A fitting tribute to two Members who have been involved in our koi hobby for 35 years, during which time they have won 9 GC s, of which they have bred 7 themselves. Their combined efforts are truly a magnificent achievement for our koi hobby, congratulations Ron and Max. Every year I remind our novice koi keepers that as our weather starts to get cooler, it is time to watch your pond s water temperature, reduce your koi feeding, use wheat germ based koi food and when the water reaches degrees C, cease feeding completely. Your fish will not have the need for food in this temperature range and it is believed it also assists with the building of a stronger bone development. Also some believe it helps reduce the risk of tumours, as a koi s ability to digest food when low water temperatures are experienced is severely reduced. Therefore it is strongly recommended to stop completely and wait till water starts to warm in the Spring. If you feel you must feed, then maybe just a little Chinese cabbage or Pond Sticks, but only a little. At our May meeting we held our highly coveted Annual Dave Pogson Breeders Trophy, won again I think for the fifth time, by Graham and Lee Fameli for a wonderful tub of ten high quality sankes. Terry McNeil took out the Jack Cohen Trophy for best baby koi on display with a really shiro utsuri. Judge on the night was Kate Andrews who also awarded an extra prize this year to a superb batch of purachina (platinum) ogons bred by Ron and Max Farrugia. Congratulations to all exhibitors a truly wonderful array of baby koi. I would also like to congratulate Ming Van and his superb Kohaku on achieving their 6th KSA Koi Pet & Garden Show Grand Championship, gained over the last seven years. This is a feat I believe never achieved anywhere else in the world and is testament to Ming s koi-keeping ability. Lastly, it is my sad duty to note the passing of AKA Member Adrian Grabham. The Club offers our condolences to his wife Srichan and their family. Yours in koi Ian Andrews, President AKA Subscription Reminder AKA Annual Subscriptions fall due on the 1st July 2014 Please forward to: AKA Membership Officer, Mr David Durrant, 3 Coolong Crescent ST CLAIR NSW 2759 Make cheques payable to Australian Koi Association NOT AKA June July

PondToss PondToss is naturally occurring, unique formula of probiotic and water conditioning microbes that improve water quality. Improves growth and survival rates. Improves water quality. Reduces ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Digests organic sludge. Improves feed conversion rate. PondToss combines the best of both Lymnozyme and WSR beneficial microbes, the probiotic portion from Lymnozyme and the water conditioning bacteria from WSR. When introduced into Aquaculture ponds PondToss creates competition with gram negative bacteria and replaces it with bacteria that are beneficial to the inhabitants. This product is a competitive excluder of pathogenic bacteria, and improves overall water quality. PondToss produces small peptides that aide in the displacement of pathogens of fish. PondToss creates a natural, beneficial Bio-Floc, while controlling ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. PondToss digests organic solids and bottom sludge. It is NOT a medication or chemotherapeutic product. It is safe for fish, shellfish, and aquatic organisms when used as directed. How it works When introduced into the water PondToss creates competition with gram negative bacteria and replaces it with bacteria that are beneficial to the pond. PondToss produces small peptides that aide in displacement of pathogens of fish and shellfish, while it also produces beneficial Bio-Floc. WSR portion controls ammonia, nitrite and digests organic solids. PondToss will aid in the competitive exclusion of Vibrio (Luminescent bacteria), Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, Streptococcus, Allococcus, Myxobacterium, Columnaris ESC, and other gram- negative pathogens. The combination of Lymnozyme and WSR gives the first complete treatment for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and sludge control, as well as probiotic treatment in aquaculture ponds. Available in 15 kg buckets or packets from our AKA Supply Officers Ron or Max Farrugia (02) or Mon to Fri 8.00 am 8.00 pm Sat and Sun 8.00 am am 6 AKA REPORTER
33rd AKA Annual Koi Show 2014 a Report Kate Andrews In September last year, we piloted a new show site in the Chinese Garden at Doonside for our Young Koi Show. Everyone was enthusiastic about this spacious, attractive venue found to be very easy to bring koi right up to the bins. This had been the one failing at Castle Hill, the koi had to be carried about 50 metres to the bins, very hard work. In September, we had very dry weather and a perfect show day; unfortunately, this was not the case for the Annual Show. The week before saw torrential rain, so heavy that our original agreed site at Doonside was completely flooded and an alternative had to be found on the opposite side of the lake in the Chinese Garden. In amongst trees, the site was far from ideal but the team made the best of it and all the bins plus small tents for the results computer and catering were squeezed in on Saturday. As always, the site was embellished with koi-noboris (koi socks) and posters and looked quite festive. A first this year, we also had a vendor selling delicious cakes, which proved very popular. Everyones fingers were firmly crossed for a dry day on Sunday. The forecast was for showers, so it could go either way. Sunday dawned; exhibitors were up at first light, if not before, catching koi at this very chilly time of day, transporting them to the show, getting them into the bins, all prepared on the Saturday. The skies were clear, the sun up, ground reasonably dry underfoot, the koi settled, everything was looking pretty good. As it proved exceptionally popular last year, Ros Lindberg and Gordon Kilborn again cooked up a wonderful breakfast for all helpers and exhibitors at the show. Very many thanks to both of them for their culinary efforts, much appreciated by all. Especially as all the equipment to cook with had to be brought in. Unfortunately, unlike the Castle Hill site, Doonside Chinese Garden has no picnic areas with in-built barbecues. There is no electricity for the show either, so a generator had to be arranged. Lee Fameli very ably took charge of the results programme on the computer this year, while I offered moral support and a hand with checking the paperwork as it came in. Another The Show set up in amongst the trees. June July

Ron and Max Ferrugia s GC Kumonryu. big thank you to Lee for taking on this critical job, because processing the results does take a lot of your time at the show and you don t get to see much of the koi. We had a real problem with the printer this year and ended up processing all round 2 paperwork for Best in Variety and special awards by hand. A new printer is on the list for the next show! This year saw 288 koi exhibited between sizes 2 to 6 from 22 exhibitors, which pleased Ian, who spent months encouraging club members to support the show by bringing a few koi. It was great to see first time AKA Exhibitors Danielle and Ralph Boehner, Michael Truong and Jimmy Tran showing their koi, hopefully they will be at many more. As attested, it is not the easiest or most pleasant job, transporting koi, but it is worthwhile, so good to see an excellent turnout on the day. Quality of the koi shown was again high and health appeared excellent, very satisfying and a real credit to Australian koi keepers breeding and keeping skills. Our judges, Willem Daffue from South Africa and Allan Bennett from Western Australia commended us on the quality of our koi. Selection of Grand s Hi Showa, winner of Size 5 and the South African Award. Champion this year took quite some time. Having been around the bins earlier, I was not surprised, because although there were good quality large Go-Sanke (Kohaku, Sanke, Showa) at the show, some of which were short-listed, there was nothing really spectacular that jumped out at you, something you want a Grand Champion to do. For example, although our Showa (Nugget) still looked good enough to show, we spawned her in the spring last year and she has not recovered her body volume, hence did not present the powerful impression necessary to win such a major award. Speaking as a judge, you do tend to look amongst Go-Sanke varieties first for GC; traditionally the award will go to one of them, because if really special, they are very hard to beat. However, GC goes to the best koi in the show and this year the koi that really caught everyone s eye, as well as all the judges attention was a truly magnificent size 6 Kumonryu, owned and bred by Ron and Max Ferrugia. After very careful consideration by the judges, GC was awarded to this koi, much to the delight of everyone present. Excellent, large, mature Kumonryu are rare, even in Japan. Truly, the best June July
Kate and Ian Andrews Size 6 Hikarimuji and best in variety winner. koi on the day won GC. After a hopeful start, following selection of GC and morning tea, the clouds started to gather and the first few raindrops fell. Anxious eyes turned skywards but were not encouraged by the darkening picture. As the morning progressed, the intermittent downpours became heavier and judging halted because you could not see the koi for the rain bouncing on the water. The ground quickly became wet and muddy and the temperature plummeted. Sadly, this was the pattern for the rest of the day, the only dry spots being in the small shelter of the few tents. The job of looking after the results, normally rather a chore; became the best job on site, because we were under cover! By mid afternoon, the rain was continuous and everyone cold, damp, a bit miserable and very anxious to get finished and home again. Such a shame, we have been lucky with the weather for at least the eight years I have attended this show. I guess it was about time we hit a wet day, but it is the last thing you need for an open-air show. Already plans are on the table for an indoor or under-cover site next year. Having experienced our major show in 10 Size 5 Hikarimuji winner, a beautiful koi, a pure silver Purachina Ogon owned by Terry McNeil and Lex Rayment. dreadful weather once, it is not something any one wants to go through again. Even packing up afterwards was terrible, all the equipment wet and muddy, everything needing washing and drying out, it was utterly exhausting. Very many thanks to Show Chairman Paul Miglionico, his team and everyone else who helped in these shocking conditions; even the judges asked to stay back and pitch in, but they would have ruined their good clothes! Instead, I took them home to dry out and to later feed them a good hot curry. It is never possible to discuss all the show winners, but I would like to make special mention of a few of very many special koi. Winner of size five and the South African award, s unusual Hi Showa looked particularly well this year with good body volume and really glowing colour. Quality of all elements of this koi are excellent, with clean white, homogeneous, strong hi (red) and very dense sumi (black). Obviously a Showa, with motoguro (black pectoral fin joints) plus a little sumi on the nose, sumi on the body of this koi is not arranged in a classical Showa AKA REPORTER
Size 6 Ochiba Shigure, owned by Kevin Wong. pattern of deep-wrapping large solid elements. Instead, the sumi is more like that of a Sanke. However, the overall picture is very pleasing and recognised as such by the judges on the day. Although our own koi, I would like to mention the size six Hikarimuji and best in variety winner (photo). We have agonised over this fish for years, because she had the potential very early to turn out well, but has taken a long time to get there. We hoped last year, but the wretched koi tore a strip of skin from her forehead, so ended her chances. Very fortunately, it has finally healed over without leaving a mark. For Hikarimuji, you need an absolutely even, brightly shining skin from nose to tail without a blemish. It does not come along very often! Despite opinion elsewhere in the world, Ogon actually are very difficult to breed and raise to a high standard. The size five Hikarimuji winner was also a beautiful koi, a really pure silver Purachina Ogon, very rare in Australia, owned by Terry and Lex. Two other koi that particularly caught my eye were a lovely size six Ochiba Shigure, owned by Kevin Wong, and a spectacularly bright Gin-Rin Asagi, owned by Lars and Ros Lindberg. Gin-Rin Asagi, owned by Lars and Ros Lindberg. This koi took best in variety Kin-Gin-Rin B. Both these koi were excellent; lovely to see such special koi. Our judges were very much into DIY this year. Willem and his partner Heste hired a car and took themselves off to explore our corner of Australia. Allan also had things he wanted to do in Sydney before the show, then spent time with Graham and Lee Fameli afterwards. All Ian and I did was take them out on Saturday evening for dinner, spent at El Phonecian, a superb Middle Eastern restaurant down at the harbour in Sydney and feed them on Sunday after the show. It actually felt quite strange. Normally a great deal of time and effort goes into providing a comprehensive social program for the judges before and after the show. What more to say? Despite the appalling weather, the show ran well, the koi at least didn t mind the rain. There were no casualties, unless human ones from taking cold! Lots to be learned from this year, but already plans are afoot to make the next show even more of a success. June July

Dave Pogson Award and Jack Cohen Trophy Kate Andrews These two very prestigious awards are made to the best young koi from the previous breeding season. The Dave Pogson award goes to the best group of koi, generally of the same variety, since a group like this is very impressive when the koi are of a similar size and quality. The Jack Cohen trophy was introduced fairly recently and honours the best individual young koi presented on the night. This year saw a very good entry of 14 groups of koi, including both non-metallic and metallic varieties. Sanke, Kohaku, Showa, Asagi/Shusui and Utsurimono were well represented and metallic koi included Hikarimuji, Hikarimoyo and Hikari Utsuri. Judging took some considerable time, because the standard of koi entered was generally high. The final decision saw Graham and Lee Fameli again winners of the Dave Pogson award with a a lovely group of well-grown Sanke The Best 10. Quality Kin Ki Utsuris. Jack Cohen s tategoi winning koi. 48 AKA REPORTER
Ron and Max s very nice quality Purachina Ogons. demonstrating excellent conformation (body shape) and skin quality. Hi and sumi were very good on all the koi included and other variety criteria defining Sanke, (for example, presence of a white nose and tail stop, good edges to hi, nicely positioned sumi) were all represented on almost every koi in the group. This was a very impressive turnout. A runner up group was also selected, this year Ron and Max Farrugia s collection of superb baby Purachina Ogon. These koi had excellent sheen and were entirely silver. Kate Andrews with the winners. After much deliberation, the Jack Cohen award was given to a lovely Shiro Utsuri bred by Terry McNeil. Although one of the smallest koi in the competition, it was felt that this Shiro had a great deal of potential, with an excellent shape and clean white skin. Good quality sumi was already developed in some areas and showed promise of a very interesting future pattern. Congratulations to everyone who participated this year, there were some very fine entries. June July
