President s Report Welcome back to our first newsletter for I trust all our members had a great holiday break and those members who have spawned their koi, I urge you to maintain a culling rate of your fry. This will ensure that only the very best are retained; that way your remaining babies have a better chance of attaining their full potential, something that won t happen if overcrowding rules the day. Congratulations to Ron and Max Farrugia for taking out Grand Champion with a beautiful Kinginrin Showa and to Kevin Wong on winning Reserve Champion with a Kohaku at our Christmas Small Koi Show. Once again the quality of koi entered this year was very pleasing. Our focus now is towards our 30th Annual Large Koi Show being held on Sunday 3rd April Our guest International ZNA Judges will be Harry Beckx from South Africa & Pang Hon-Seong from Singapore. Both these judges are ZNA Assistant Certified and we are looking forward to welcoming them both. Set up for the Show will be Saturday with as many helpers as possible and the koi will need to be in their bins before 8.30am on the Sunday. My special request is to all members to support this our 30th Show and make it one of our best. If all members could make the effort of entering a few of their koi, then this will boost the overall number of entries and help make the Show an outstanding showcase to our magnificent koi. Please start thinking about what koi you would like to enter and if you need help in completing entry forms or wanting to photograph your koi or transporting them, please speak to me or any of our Committee who will be only to happy to help. Finally a little bit of news, recently the Better Homes & Gardens crew contacted Dianna Banning and Tony Grasso to film a segment about koi for an upcoming episode to be aired sometime in March. Seems that this episode is about freshwater fish generally but will cover koi to some depth. I believe also that Dr. Harry may have even got to handle Tony s monster Ogon? I will keep you informed as to when this TV show will go to air. Yours in koi, Paul Miglionico President Reminder AKA 30th Large Koi Show. Sunday 3 April More details in next edition! 8 Tancho Cranes On the occasion of the article on Tancho by Louis Vanreusel in the first issue of Koi Wereld, the new magazine of the Belgian Koi Society, I wanted to write an article on the Tancho Crane whose name is given to this variety. Therefore I decided to revisit these elegant birds after the All Japan Show in February. Once again I was very fortunate since one week before my departure to Hokkaido all airports had been closed due to snowstorms. I merely saw some melting snow, and the sun was shining for the most part. Clear weather implies excellent conditions to take photographs, but in the winter it also implies low night temperatures, especially in Hokkaido. The best-known location to photograph cranes at dawn is Otawa Bridge where they sleep in the river while standing. At sunrise the water shades into gold and the snow turns bluish. In combination with the white rime-frosted trees this creates a magnificent landscape. With a bit of luck, the cranes perform their courtship display in this light before the rising sun evaporates the water so strongly that you are no longer able to see them. Only on the third morning they were kind enough to do this timely. Actually, that s hardly surprising, knowing that the temperature fell to 22 C in the morning due to the clear weather. Who would feel like dancing in these conditions? Considering that, if you want to secure a good seat on the bridge, you need to be there at least an hour and a half before dawn and that it will take another two hours to photograph the birds. I was in the belief that I was carrying sufficiently warm clothing, yet my toes, fingers, ears and lips were quite unhappy. However, the incredible spectacle on the third morning made me forget this cold. I visited Tancho-no-Sato in Akan twice, where the 200 cranes who live there are fed fish to at 2 p.m. From 1.55 p.m. a dozen white-tailed eagles wheel high in the sky. You 6 truly wonder whether they have some sort of watch; their biological clock really is amazing. While nose diving, they attack a young crane to filch its fish. But they have to be fast, because the adult Tancho are clearly at the top of the hierarchy. When they hasten to help their congener, the eagles rapidly take to their heels, mostly without fish. Even this brazen group are clearly frightened by the cranes long beaks. Even if the cranes sometimes put the fish on the ground just for a moment, the crows do not dare to come closer. They content themselves with the leftovers left behind by the crane when it leaves. Allow me to give some additional information on these magnificent birds. The Japanese Crane, Grus japonensis, Tancho, Tancho Crane, Red-crowned Crane or Manchurian Crane is the second rarest and second tallest crane (150 cm height). Only the biggest flying bird in the world, the Indian Sarus Crane or Grus antigone, with its 2m height is taller. The male Japanese Crane can weigh up to 15 kg, which makes him the heaviest crane in the world. Similar to the Sarus Crane, its wingspread reaches a stunning 250 cm. Very AKA REPORTER

impressive when it closely flies over you! The adult birds have a red spot on their heads, the tancho.their diet is very varied: a.o. insects, Amphibia, fish, small rodents, grass and other plants. They can reach the age of 70 and older, and therefore they symbolize a long life span and immortality in Japan. In the winter they live in groups. At night they usually sleep while standing on Hotspot - the e-mag of the South East one leg in rivers to protect themselves against predators. In the winter, the water is also much warmer than the extremely cold air. Cranes are threatened with extinction, but thanks to feeding stations in the winter, their number in Japan is increasing by 6% each year. At present, over 1,200 cranes live in Hokkaido. Here they are resident. A second population of approximately 1,400 birds broods in northeastern China and southeastern Russia, and hibernates in North Korea and Central China. They brood in marshes, but unfortunately these are reclaimed and so their habitat shrinks. Biologists also warn that the high concentration of birds round feeding stations implies risk for infections. Crane couples stay together for life, but when one partner dies, the remaining crane seeks a new partner. Therefore they symbolize loyalty, love and happiness in Japan, which makes them a popular marriage symbol. They are often portrayed in all kinds of art forms, and they are the symbol of Japan Airlines. Moreover, they embellish the 1,000 Yen note. Their courtship display is very spectacular and attracts a lot of spectators. In places where they are fed, they are not shy at all and you can often behold this ritual. They build their nests in marshes and the female cranes lay only two eggs each year. Let s hope these magnificent birds never become extinct, that would be a very sad loss. 10 Exercises in Koi Appreciation - Sanke Introduction Sanke, or more correctly, Taisho Sanke, named for the Japanese era ( ) in which this variety was first identified. Sanke is the second of the so-called big three koi varieties, (Go- Sanke - Kohaku, Sanke and Showa). Whereas Kohaku is easily recognisable, displaying only red and white, both Sanke and Showa demonstrate red, (hi) black (sumi) and white (shiro) patterns. Sanke (photograph (1)), have a distinctive placement of sumi which may be thought of as being white-based, in contrast to the black-based Showa (photograph (2). White-based means that sumi markings on the body are usually smaller and more rounded in appearance than those of Showa and are more common above the lateral lines, along the back. The head generally shows no sumi, or at most, a small spot or two on the forehead. Fins may either be completely plain or show light sumi stripes (tejima or tezumi - photograph (1)). Only black-based koi demonstrate sumi as pectoral fin joints (motoguro). Sanke may be either fully scaled (wagoi), or doitsu. Doitsu means that the koi has only single rows of large scales on either side of the dorsal line and along each lateral line. Doitsu Go-Sanke varieties have shown considerable improvement in quality in recent years (photograph 3) and have gained in popularity. Classifying Sanke Classifying Go-Sanke koi is not generally a problem for most hobbyists; they are usually well recognised. However, the three-coloured, non-metallic koi varieties Sanke and Showa are still regularly confused, particularly since the emergence of modern (Kindai) Showa with Photograph 1 Photograph 2 8 AKA REPORTER

Key Points for Classifying Sanke How many colours? Three Red/black/white Black-based? (sumi on head/motoguro/deep wrapping body sumi) White-based? (no sumi on the head/striped fins/rounded body sumi) Showa Karasugoi Sanke Blocks and/or jagged stripes of sumi crossing the body laterally Extensive body sumi, head to tail sumi arrangement fewer and smaller sumi markings, alongside the recent development of Sanke with larger, very dense sumi markings (photograph (4)) which more closely resemble Showa sumi. Remember, if hi appears only on the forehead of a Sanke, it is classified with Tancho, not Sanke (photograph (5)). Kin-Gin-Rin Sanke, (photograph (6)), demonstrating rows of very shiny scales along the back, is classified with Kin-Gin-Rin. Since both Sanke and Showa have metallic equivalents (classified with Hikarimoyo and Hikari Utsuri respectively), to begin the classification exercise, a good starting point is the simple question: Photograph 3 Metallic or non-metallic? Compare the brilliantly shiny metallic doitsu Yamatonishiki (metallic Sanke) in photograph (7) with the non-metallic Sanke in photographs (1) and (3). The difference between the highly reflective skin of the Yamatonishiki and the February 2011 March

lustrous, but matt finish on the Sanke is quite distinctive. Note also that the fins of metallic koi are opaque, as opposed to the semitransparent appearance of finnage on (even mature) non-metallic varieties. Having established that the koi to be classified is non-metallic, and demonstrates hi, shiro and sumi, the simplest line of questioning to follow relates to the positioning of the sumi. Is the koi white-based or black-based? White-based, as explained above, means that the head displays no sumi, (or at most, a small spot or two on the forehead) and fins have no motoguro, instead being either plain white, or showing tejima (or tezumi). To reiterate, on the body, sumi markings are generally smaller than those on black-based koi, more rounded in appearance and usually confined above the lateral lines. Compare again, the positioning of sumi of the (typical) Sanke in photograph (1) with that of the Showa in photograph (2). The differences are very obvious. However, looking at the Sanke in photograph (4), some confusion is perhaps more understandable. The high-density sumi on the body appears very Showa-like, at first glance. However, this koi has no sumi on the head or motoguro. This relatively recent and considerable improvement in the overall quality of Sanke sumi in Japan has resulted in quite a major change in their character as a variety, resulting in a much stronger impression. Sanke includes: Taisho Sanke - a white-based, koi with shiro, hi and sumi. Hi and shiro generally appear more predominant than sumi. Pectoral fins may either be plain white or demonstrate tejima (sumi stripes). Aka Sanke - a Sanke with predominant hi (see photograph (10)). In some cases, hi can be so heavy as to give the impression of an Aka Bekko at first glance.) However, unlike Aka Bekko, somewhere on an Aka Sanke, a clear line can be seen separating red and very minimal white patterns, usually discovered low down around the sides of the koi, or on the tip of the nose. An Aka Sanke will generally have white finnage. NOTE: Kanoko (dappled fawn) Sanke, where some, or all hi patterns appear as very small markings on individual scale areas, are classified with Kawarimono. Koromo Sanke, with a reticulated effect over hi patterns, are classified in the UK with Koromo. Under ZNA rules, Koromo Sanke may be either placed in Koromo or Kawarimono. Goshiki Sanke, (photograph (8) Tancho Goshiki Sanke), demonstrating a reticulated or vignette effect over hi and white patterns, are classified as for Koromo Sanke. Tancho Sanke, with a single hi marking appearing on the forehead, are classified with Tancho (photograph (5)) and the metallic Sanke, Yamatonishiki (fully scaled) or Heisei Nishiki (doitsu) with Hikarimoyo (photograph (7)). Sanke may also demonstrate kin-gin-rin scaling, (at least 2-3 complete rows of very shiny scales on either side of the dorsal). Gin scales are silver, appearing on shiro and sumi, while kin scales look gold, appearing on hi. Kin-Gin-Rin Sanke (photograph (6)) are classified with Kin-Gin-Rin (A) A Revision of Appreciation Points Photograph (1) demonstrates a Sanke with a fully mature, powerfully impressive figure. A broad, blunt-nosed head leads smoothly back to the widest point of the body at the shoulder, with a gentle curve to a well-muscled tail area or peduncle, completing the strong outline. Young koi do not show the same impressive outline, but should still demonstrate a wellproportioned and shapely figure, as shown in photograph (9). Fins, particularly the very obvious pectorals, look best with smooth, gently curving leading rays. Another, relatively common conformational problem is a sharply pointed head which can then appear slightly too small for the body volume. White ground (shiro), a key element in appreciation of high quality skin, should look pure white from nose to peduncle, soft and smooth without visible scale edges. Fukurin, the subtle three dimensional netting effect created February 2011 March

Photograph 8 Photograph 10 Photograph 9 by slightly proud, glowing skin between scale areas, is now often seen on mature Go-Sanke (Kohaku, Sanke and Showa) and is a feature of high quality skin. It is most often visible on shiro. The Sanke in photograph (1) clearly demonstrates this attractive feature in the shoulder region. Conversely, the Aka Sanke in photograph (10) shows an effect known as 12 Photograph 11 Matsunosuke shine along the side, which is neither kin-gin-rin nor fukurin, but which has been mistaken for both in the past. Hi (or beni) should look thick and homogeneous, by which we mean that the colour should be even within and between well-defined pattern elements. Compare photographs (4) and (11) for very visible AKA REPORTER

Photograph 12 Photograph 13 Photograph 14 differences in hi quality. The texture of hi on the head can look a little different because there are no scales, but the colour should match that on the body, when hi development is complete. Remember, hi on the body, during rapid growth and development of a koi may look lighter. Sumi on Sanke has undergone considerable evolution over the years, changing from an appearance of floating on the skin, to one of great depth, emerging from within the koi in an impression originally more associated with Showa. Photographs (1) and (4) demonstrate this contrast, although the Sanke in photograph (1) is a modern koi. Although positioning and style of sumi markings are not prescribed, they must work for the koi in question with other elements of the pattern. However, as a general rule, very many, small scattered sumi markings (photograph 10) rarely convey a strong impression and shoulder sumi, preferably dense and relatively large is regarded as particularly important for this variety. Well-placed sumi is known as tsubo (photograph (4)). Edges of both sumi and hi markings have different requirements depending on whether they face the head or tail. Trailing edges (facing February 2011 March

the tail - kiwa) should look sharply defined, either following scale borders (maruzome) or cutting across them (kamisori). Photograph (4) clearly shows the sort of edges to aim for, contrast this koi with that in photograph (11). Good kiwa of sumi is more difficult to achieve than kiwa of hi. Leading edges of pattern elements against white skin may show a blue or pink, blurred border respectively, where sumi or hi can be seen through shiro. This effect is called sashi and, if present, should look even along each border and involve no more than one scale width. Sumi against fully developed hi should not demonstrate sashi. The Sanke in photograph (4) shows small, very neat areas of sashi of sumi. Contrast the sumi on this koi to that of the Sanke in photograph (12), demonstrating poorer edges to sumi. Patterns are never prescribed, but should, ideally demonstrate balance from head to tail and from side to side. A match between nose and final tail pattern element is pleasing; for example, a little white on the nose is ideally matched by white just before the tail. Because only hi and shiro appear (typically) on the head of a Sanke, it is considered more elegant if the last pattern element before a white odome (tail stop) is hi rather than sumi. A Sanke is always expected to have at least some hi on the head. Photograph (9) shows a Sanke with minimal head hi. Photographs (13) and (14) show good quality Sanke, but with unbalanced patterns. Tejima (or tezumi) are not essential for appreciation although lightly striped fins are attractive and have been thought to indicate sumi stability, when present. Not so easy to judge from a photograph, the deportment of the koi should be good. It should look alert, swim freely and hold out its fins. It should also be level in the water. Final Thoughts An excellent Sanke is one of, if not the most difficult koi to achieve. Unlike Showa, pattern elements on a Sanke more often work against a high impact impression, rather than for it. This is probably why such an effort has been made in Japan towards producing higher density, larger sumi markings on Sanke. Photograph (4) shows an excellent example of what is achievable and the result is spectacular. Something to aim for in Australia? 18 Koi Critique Sanke Sanke (Sahn keh) Another of the big three koi varieties (Kohaku, Sanke & Showa), the white (shiro), red (hi or beni) and black (sumi) Sanke generally demonstrates sumi patterns smaller in size than seen on Showa. Additionally, arrangement of sumi differs. On a Sanke, you would not expect to see extensive sumi on the head, or to appear as pectoral fin joints, since these are Showa features. Quality of red and white patterns on Sanke can be expected to equal that seen on Kohaku and sumi should appear very dense, thick and coal black with a lustrous finish. The three and a half year old, 81cm Sakai Sanke pictured, is the winner of the South African Koi Society National Show this year, held in Durban. This koi, from the Big Rose blood line, at 69cm, held the record for the largest two-year old ever produced, up until this year. She has an excellent conformation, with a well-rounded, fully mature figure, despite her youth. Skin quality is superb, with soft lustrous colours and delicate netted fukurin already clearly visible providing an attractive three-dimensional appearance to the skin. Hi is deep and homogeneous, nicely balanced by neat, dense sumi markings and the bands of white breaking up a rather simple, but attractive hi pattern. The button of hi on the nose is charming on this koi. Not surprisingly, at this age, some underlying sumi is yet to develop. There are a few minor demerits to note. Both eyes show a touch of hi and the leading border on the head hi pattern is uneven. Additionally, there are two tiny flecks of hi in the white, just ahead of the main pattern element on the body, associated with an area of slightly uneven sashi (the blurred leading edge of a pattern element on a fully scaled koi). Although hi does not run into the tail, ideally, a small area of white before the tail is always a desirable feature. However, in this case, it could also be argued that red just before the tail balances red on the nose. The overall impression given by this Sanke was very powerful and she was a very worthy winner of the show this year. Kate McGill (Photograph courtesy Ian Andrews). 16 AKA REPORTER
