They represent a cross section of your semen needs, with Mainland and American semen available, conventional and sexed and they are all A2/A2. There really is no need to look any further when we have this choice and quality available to you. Add in the newly improved pricing structure which rewards larger orders and a much improved delivery service from UKSS you won t find a better supplier of semen than your Society. In addition many of our Levy members who continue to keep their registrations up to date will be receiving a reward for their diligence in the form of a letter informing you of 1 discount on every calf born in 2014 and 2015 that was registered within the 60 day window which extends to the end of February for calves born in December. This facility is available to every Levy member so lets make a start with getting everyone up to date now and then keeping up the good work throughout the rest of the year so that you too will qualify for this discount in Whether you use Telereg, Webreg or prefer to call the Office on please use the facilities available to you HELP US TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY NOW. GENOMIC DATA Our Levy members and those Associate members with larger herds will have recently received a letter from the Society containing 10 envelopes for the collection of hair samples from cull cows. If we as a breed are to take Genomic evaluation forward and embrace the benefits it will bring to our breeding choices, we must increase the amount of Genetic data we have available for testing. I would therefore urge you all to take full advantage of the facilities available to take this initiative forward, Please take hair samples from cows leaving the farm, record the necessary information on the envelope and in your NMR or CIS records and periodically return the samples to the Office there are plenty more envelopes to be had please ask. Potential Bull Dams if you are the owner of a cow that has been chosen for a planned mating, you will receive an envelope for a hair sample please return this to the Office promptly. If you wish to take advantage of the Society s discounted service for Genomic testing of cows of your choice, please send the hair samples to the Office in paper envelopes only recording the cow s Name and Herdbook Number. If you wish to register a bull calf please return the 3 envelopes you are sent for hair samples for DNA, Genotype and A2 testing promptly the bull calf and his eventual progeny will not be registered until this has been received and the necessary tests have been done. SHOW UNIFORM Recently there has been some speculation about changes to the Breed uniform, initially discussed at the Judges Workshop on the 6th April. Primarily this was instigated by a request to follow the other breeds in the wearing of white trousers, rather than our present black, so competitors that show more than one breed do not need to change their trousers between classes in the lines. I have received several telephone calls from concerned members who have already purchased black trousers for this show season let me assure you that no definite decision has been made and certainly for the 2016 show season black trousers continue to form part of the EGCS uniform. This subject will need to be discussed and then if accepted, formally agreed at Council at the end of June and I would ask anyone concerned who has strong feelings, for or against, contact the Office on before that meeting so your opinions can be voiced. OLD SHOW COW? Do you have a retired Show cow that would appreciate a good home in her twilight years she must be halter trained. Please contact our Associate member, Virginia Deradour on th World Guernsey Conference Tour The unfortunate death of Jim Lichtwark a week before the Tour started, was a big shock to us all, so Peter Marwood stepped into the position of President for the Conference, and as Tour leader, doing a very fine job, superbly supported by John the bus driver. The Tour began at Queenstown. On the first day we visited an old Gold mining Chinese settlement and on the 2 nd day had a disappointing journey to Milford Sound, a 2 1 /2 hour, very scenic, bus trip but no whales or dolphins to be seen. This was made up for, 3 days later, at Kaikoura when we saw 3 Sperm Whales and a pod of about 200 dolphins diving under the boat and giving jumping displays. At Christchurch we saw the after effects of the major earth quake in Feb Transport containers have been used to build a temporary shopping market and more spectacularly a temporary Cathedral made, again, with a container base and cardboard roof, very effective. The Old Cathedral is looking very damaged and they have not yet decided whether to restore it or not. From here we went North across the Cook Strait, through dazzling scenery visiting a Ist WW Aviation Museum, a Vinery and Weta Workshops where all the props are made for the Hobbits movies. 8 We know that inbreeding levels are increasing in all breeds not just here in the UK but worldwide. The EGCS has recently been given access to data for all pedigree registered Guernsey s in the UK going back 30 years and more. We wanted to see exactly where the Guernsey breed in the UK stands with inbreeding and as most published figures are already five, or more, years out of date we wanted to know the current position. In the 1980s there were a lot more 100% 90% 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% 20% 10% 0% Guernseys in the UK, a lot more herds and herds running their own bulls. In the pursuit of rapid genetic improvement, and coinciding with the decline in popularity of the Guernsey breed, breeders migrated to the use of artificial insemination and the introduction of bull semen from around the world became popular. In common with other breeds the Guernsey breeder has overused many bulls in the past resulting in limited blood lines which unfortunately are reflected in the figures we see today. Inbreeding & Guernseys by Sue Staples Ho w zero inbre eding has declin ed How zero inbreeding has declined >20% >15% < 20% >10% <15% > 6% <10% >1 less than 6 Ze ro inbreeding Close look at 0.1% - 5.9% inbreeding UK UK G u Guernseys with with Ze zero inbreeding out of 893 registered 18 out of 940 registered 30 out of 1439 registered 32 out of 829 registered 46 out of 1153 registered 300 out of 1517 registered 1913 out of 3254 registered The worrying news is that whilst the vast majority of animals have an inbreeding coefficient of 6% or less if we examine just this group of animals we see that the numbers are migrating away from the lower end ie 1% towards the higher end 6%. This has to stop! If we examine the animals which have an inbreeding coefficient between 0.1% and 6% for the same period it becomes apparent that whilst there are roughly still the same percentage of animals which have an inbreeding coefficient of below 6% they are migrating from the lower end of the scale to the higher end. The worry is that if we repeat the same exercise in 2020 we won t be looking at animals in the 0.1% to 6% bracket but in the 6% - 10% bracket. Why worry about inbreeding? Excessive inbreeding can result in the development of recessive genes such as the JH1C in the Jersey breed resulting in infertility if a positive cow is mated to a positive bull. Any level of inbreeding will have a detrimental effect on milk production, fertility and general thriftiness. Levels higher than 6% must be avoided. Increased inbreeding leads to inbreeding depression, lower genetic variance and a higher frequency of lethal genes ie the cow conceives but embryonic death occurs. The mating of two highly inbred individuals does not necessarily result in an animal with an even greater inbreeding coefficient if there are no common ancestors. As a general rule of thumb check the pedigree of the animal to be mated and the bull pedigree, if they have ancestors in common then use an alternative. Conference Tour continued visited Ken and Leslie Lichtwark who showed us 50 very good Guernseys being farmed alongside 900 NZ Holsteins. Ken showed us the production records for his Holsteins and Guernseys which were almost identical but under the NZ evaluation system the Holsteins average +5, the Guernseys 207, a subject for considerable discussion at the Conference. We saw two good herds: Tom and Jemima Bebbington, 40 Guernseys with 200 Kiwi crosses and Nancy and Quentin Lichtwark`s 120 strong herd and also a herd which has been farmed under severe NZ stocking rates, holding their own against Jerseys. Then on to Hamilton via Rotorua visiting the geysers and a very entertaining Maori evening and the second of our two Home Stays where we were entertained royally by local farmers. Then the Conference, a subject for another report. The final dinner was at Hobbiton Village part of the set for the Lord of the Rings films. Chris Watson
