3 SUSAN SALO DEVELOPING BALANCE, STRIDE AND SCOPE IN YOUR AGILITY DOG Author: Paul Engemann On Mar ch 26-28th 2015, my 2 year old Austr alian Shepher d, Sylvie, and I attended the Susan Salo Jump Gr id 3-day Wor kshop at Think Paw sitive. The w or kshop was available for dogs of all ages? fr om a 10 w eek old Cor gi to a 10 year old Weimar aner, and of cour se, all sizes including an Otter Hound. The mater ials focused on the six separ ate components of per for mance jumping and the impor tance of having a specific methodology in place for teaching your dog the mechanics of good jumping. Susan demonstr ated sever al Foundation Gr ids w ith w hich you and your dog then pr acticed under her watchful eye. At the foundation level, ther e is initially no motion fr om the handler. The techniques w ill either be per for med by r ecalling or sending the dog to a tar get. Susan Salo has over 35 year s of exper ience in the w or ld of show jumping as both a competitor and a pr ofessional tr ainer. She has r idden for many year s w ith some of the nation's most noted hor semen including Gene Lew is, Geor ge Mor r is, and the late Jimmy Williams. Susan br ings her extensive exper ience of combining speed w ith jumping to the spor t of dog agility. Day 1: Set-Poi nt & St r i di ng Set-point is essentially w her e the dog steps into the jump ar ea and jumps. We star ted low, and w or ked our way up to height. Height is the last thing that Susan teaches for dogs. Pr oper technique is str essed mor e impor tantly than height. Height is easy to teach if the dog has pr oper technique. To assist w ith teaching the pr oper technique, Susan tr ains the dog to jump one cup higher than their jump height. (IE: For a dog that jumps 12 inch, Susan w ould typically tr ain that dog to jump 14 inches.) Additionally, she uses an ascending extended double as w ell, so that the dogs lear n the pr oper for m to jump. An ascending extended double for a 12 inch dog was configur ed by using 2 single bar jumps that w er e spr ead out to let the dog elongate over the jump. The fir st jump in the configur ation w ould be set at 10 inches, w hile the second jump w ould be set at 12 inches. The str iding dr ills w er e all str aight str ides w ith the bar s always set at 6 inches for the big dogs, 2 inches for the small dogs. Continued on the next page... PUPPY FITNESS With a number of new puppies joining our r anks and star ting to funnel into the agility r ing, it is always appr opr iate to r emind our selves of the age appr opr iate guidelines for pr oper exer cise of puppies. This ar ticle pr ovides loads of w onder ful infor mation about a gr ow ing puppy and how to best exer cise them w ithout causing too much fatigue or injur y. 4 SUSAN SALO DEVELOPING BALANCE, STRIDE AND SCOPE IN YOUR AGILITY DOG Continued... Height was not impor tant in this exer cise as the jumps w er e set 3 feet apar t w ith a minimum of 5 jumps in the gr id. This exer cise taught the dog both collection and to bounce over each bar. Day 2: Sl i ces, Set-Poi nt, & St r i di ng The str iding exer cises w er e differ ent this time ar ound, w e r emoved jump 4, so that dogs w ould need to take a str ide befor e jumping. We star ted the distance betw een Jump 3 and 4 at 15 feet, and then moved it out to a max of 19 feet and then moved it closer again. After each successful r epetition, the distance w ould be adjusted. Again, these bar s w er e all low? for the big dogs, jumps 1 thr ough 3 w er e set at 6 inches and the last jump was set at 8 or 12 inches. You can eventually move the last jump to height, but the goal is str iding not height. The second exer cise of the day was slices both to the left and then r ight sides. This was done w ith thr ee jumps. The bar placements in this example is for a big dog - the fir st jump was set to 6 inches, the second was set to 16 inches, and the last jump set at 6 inches. Ther e was 6 foot spacing placed betw een each of the jumps and w e set the dogs back about 3 feet fr om the fir st jump. The jumps of the gr id w er e offset fr om each other at about 18 to 24 inches. (Click HERE for sam ple video.) Day 3: Bend Wor k In this exer cise, 5 Jumps w er e used to assist the dogs to bend both to the r ight and left. Jumps wer e all set on an angle and the bar s set at 6 inches dow n to the 4 inch cup on the inside of the jump. The spacing was about 6 feet fr om the middle of each jump to the middle of the next jump on an ar c. The goal is for the dog to take the jumps tightly. (Click HERE for sample video) In this video you can see the layout of the gr id. The second gr id of the day was similar to the fir st day of the seminar w her e w e had 5 jumps in a r ow ; how ever, in this ver sion Susan had incr easing distances betw een each bar. (IE: Fir st jump, then 6 feet; second jump, then 7 feet; thir d jump, then 8 feet; four th Bar, then 9 feet to the last bar.) This gr id taught var ious distances betw een the bar s and the dogs w er e not supposed to str ide betw een them. It was to teach to single and double bounce ver sus str iding betw een jumps. For the puppies, Susan used a distance fr om 5 to 8 feet betw een jumps. This dr ill is intended to be per for med after the bend w or k to lengthen the muscles fr om being so tight after the bend w or k, her e they can extend them. In Sum m ar y Susan offer s a unique per spective and know ledge of the mechanical aspects of jumping w hich, w hen pr oper ly applied, can cr eate muscle memor y and balance for the canine athlete. Not to be confused w ith handling seminar s, her lessons and w or kshops focus entir ely on the dog? building better jumping skills and instilling mor e confidence and speed. Tr aining w ith Susan is an oppor tunity to develop your "eye" and w itness dogs lear ning about balance, str iding, and scope until jumping becomes effor tless for them. Over all, it was a gr eat exper ience for a younger dog just star ting to jump and w ill definitely help in the futur e of under standing and implementing jumping skills. My only dow nside was that w e didn?t get into handler motion, w hich is w her e my dog cur r ently str uggles. How ever, I now have the tools to keep her looking ahead and can w or k a lot of the movement on my ow n w ith the set point and str iding dr ills. For those w onder ing, the cor gi didn?t see a bar the w hole w eekend, he used jump bumps for ever ything - small bumps for str iding and the lar ge bump for simulating height. Want t o l ear n mor e about Susan Sal o's t echniques? Refer ence her Jump Gr id Wor kbooks and other mater ials located on the Cl ean Run w ebsite.

5 TOP SECRET!! NATIONAL DOG AGILITY LEAGUE Author: M onique Engemann Top Dog - Nat i onal Dog Agi l i t y League Catch the new tr end coming to an agility club near you. This new tr end is defined as an?agility League?? w hich best simulates a bow ling league. The concept is to incor por ate teams of par ticipants w hich r un a specific cour se ever y w eek, month, or w hatever time the set of teams ar e able to meet! What ar e t he gener al r ul es? To play you must r egister your dog w ith Top Dog, and your dog must be at least 12 months old to star t playing; how ever, keeping in mind the potential obstacles involved in that month?s cour se setup? w eaves, contacts, etc. that the dog may or may not be r eady or able to per for m. League Agility has the follow ing jump heights? 4?, 8?, 12?, 16?, and 20?? any dogs measur ing over 20? w ould r un in the 20? jump height. The gener al concept is that a cour se is r un and scor ed similar to USDAA?s Steeplechase? a dog is scor ed based on total time to complete the cour se, w ith any faults acquir ed being added to the cour se time (IE: Dog completes the cour se in 29 seconds but had an off cour se 5 second fault? the total time w ould be 29 seconds + 5 seconds = 34 total seconds). Didn?t like your fir st attempt? Top Dog also allow s you to call a Mulligan! What is a Mulligan? Basically, a do over. Depending on your league, you have the option to r edo your fir st attempt for a better scor e! Also, the cour ses ar e not only Steeplechase. Ther e ar e other games and cour ses that can be played such as Snooker, Jumper s, etc. depending on the challenge that month. Can you Ti t l e? Yes! In addition to just having fun w ith your fr iends and fur r y par tner, NDAL also has a titling pr ogr am. Her e is a list of some of the titles you could ear n: - Top Dog Beginner (TDB) - Top Dog Inter m ediate (TDI) - Top Dog Super ior (TDS) What ar e t he cost s? To r egister your dog, it is cur r ently a one-time $10 per dog fee to Top Dog. The cost to play w ould depend on the amount the club w ould char ge. For example, the tr aining center might char ge $16 a dog for an eight w eek league. This w ould cover a league secr etar y fee and TDAP r ecor ding fees. Want to l ear n m or e? 9 AND THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON... HANDLER: RENEE M ENINI SANDY RAPEY (SR): Renee, w hat types of dogs have you had and w hat types of tr aining have you done? RENEE: I?ve had labs (Whiskey) and Ber nese Mountain dogs (Bailey and Mor gan*all at the Rainbow Br idge). I cur r ently ow n Skyy and Pepper, a yellow and a black lab r espectively. I?ve done obedience, r ally, dock diving, tr ick, hunting, car ting and tr acking tr aining, and of cour se now, agility. SR: When and how did you come into the agility w or ld? RENEE: I got Bailey, my Ber nese Mtn. dog in 1999 and began obedience. I toyed ar ound w ith agility in the backyar d. Ar ound 2001, a fr iend (**hey Donna Cor doba!!) suggested I tr y competing in a fun match at WAG. It was her e that I discover ed I had a lot mor e to lear n about agility and became a member of WAG in I?m now a member, a student and an instr uctor w ith WAG. SR: Now you ow n Skyy 8 y.o and Pepper, 2 y.o. Wher e ar e you at w ith competing w ith Skyy and Pepper? RENEE: Skyy has titles in UKC, AKC, CPE, obedience, r ally, companion and tr ick. Pepper had titles in UKC, CPE and got her tr ick dog title at 6 months old! SR: 6 months is impr essive! After tr aining and competing w ith Skyy for 6 year s befor e getting Pepper, w ould you say tr aining is easier w ith Pepper? RENEE: Yes, because you lear n and gain mor e know ledge about the dog tr aining in differ ent ar enas, and then tr ansfer all of that know ledge to the new dog. Pepper was definitely easier to tr ain because I had mor e know ledge and exper ience on tr aining! SR: So its intr iguing to me as to w hy you acquir ed another dog, and w hy another lab? RENEE: When I decided I wanted a second dog, I knew that I wanted a dog that had high dr ive and deter mination like Skyy had, so I wanted another puppy fr om the same br eeder (Thank you Toni Reeves). I knew that I was going to be able to handle the challenge because of ever ything I lear ned tr aining Skyy. And I am still lear ning! SR: As a tr ainer, w hat w ould you say is your biggest challenge? RENEE: Lear ning the differ ent styles of dogs. By that I mean, I str ive to pr ovide the best infor mation for tr aining techniques that w ill w or k best for a specific br eed. SR: Whats new in your agility w or ld? RENEE: I r ecently joined an?agility league?w hich is in the pr ocess of r olling out, hopefully acr oss the US. It w ill give player s an oppor tunity to compete w ith other teams, r egar dless of geogr aphic location. I think it w ill be a lot of fun and of cour se, Skyy and Pepper ar e excited to have mor e r ing time too!

10 AND THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON... DOGS: SKYY & PEPPER M ENINI SR: Skyy, I?ve watched you r un at sever al CPE and UKC tr ials, and you look like you ar e having a blast. You?r e super fast and jump?skyy?high. What do you think your biggest challenge is in the agility r ing? SKYY: Well I have a slow mom. I?m super fast. And tr y as she might, my mom cannot keep up w ith me. When I slow dow n so she can catch up, I knock dow n these w hite tubular pipes. I love my mom, but she needs to pick up the pace. SR: You have played the CPE games. Which one is your favor ite and w hy? SKYY: I love Fullhouse. I r un and r un and r un, and it r eally doesn?t seem to matter w her e I go or w hat I do, I just r eally get to have fun. Ther e is a per son in the r ing, I think her name is Judge. Judge is yelling out number s, w hich I r eally don?t under stand, but I think it has to do w ith my good looks as I conquer the obstacles. Ear s flapping is usually 1 pt. If the per son sees me smiling, I usually hear a 3, so I tr y ver y har d to ensur e I?m smiling w hen she looks at me, or w hen I r un past her. Super high jumping is usually w hen I hear 5, so I do super high jumping a lot! My highest scor e on a Fullhouse r un was 52! I jumped r eally r eally high many times that r un. It was aw esome. Like best time evar!(52 points could be 52 jumps, 17 tunnels / tir es or 10 contacts!!! INSANE!) SR: Pepper, w hat do you enjoy competing or tr aining in most? PEPPER: I like the hunting tr aining and competitions. I like agility, but not as much as Skyy. Skyy?s like an addict. I just do it cuz its fun, but hunting is r eally my thing. SR: Skyy, one last question: w hat is your absolute thing to do? SKYY: Hanging w ith my mom. I ow n the coolest per son in the w or ld. No matter w her e w e ar e, or w hat w e ar e doing, my hear t is happiest w hen I?m w ith her. I w uv her! DO YOU WANT TO BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT? If you or your dog w ould like to be in the spotlight, please contact Sandy Sandy_Kel l sn.com to be featur ed in our next issue!
