The judges, Kirsten McGregor, Sweepstakes and Jason Hoke, Regular Classes both did a terrific job. I want to give kudos to Cheryl Rangel and Leslie Stolfi for heading up this show for the past few years, and to their show committee also. It takes everybody working together to put on a show like we have in New York. It was great to have a quorum again at the Membership Meeting. That makes three years now that there's been a quorum for this meeting. I think it helps attendance to have the Year End awards presented at its conclusion. That's another incentive for members to attend. Congratulations to all the award winners! We will not have to hold an election this year since no additional nominations were received by the deadline. The Nominating Committee's proposed slate will be deemed elected on June 1, They are President - Leslie Stolfi (FL), Treasurer - Robert Franzoni (VA), Directors - Ken Lambert (OK) and Georgina Miller (CA). Congratulations! That leaves the Vice President's slot vacant and an appointment will need to be made to fill that position. My term as President ends on May 31st. After serving on the Board for ten years, I am certainly going to miss being involved. I hope all of you are making plans to attend the National Roving Specialty in Mesquite, TX July 6-8th which will be followed by two All-Breed shows at a close by location. Our judges will be Laurie Loisel (MD) for Sweepstakes, George Milutinovich (CA) for Regular Classes, Karen Couch (TX) for Agility and Patricia Gannon (TX) for Rally and Obedience. The Club's Annual Membership Meeting and Club Dinner will be held there. The show committee is very busy making preparations for what I am sure will be a spectacular event. I am looking forward to attending and showing at a YTCA show for the first time in many years. I hope to see you there too...hopefully in the winner's lineup! Sincerely, Bob 3

5 YTCA Board Meeting Held Via Teleconference Call Tuesday, January 19, 2016 President Bob Owen called the meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. Eastern time with the following Board members in attendance: Bob Owen (President), Leslie Stolfi (Vice President), Matina E. Minutes of the Previous Meeting: President Bob Owen reported that the minutes of the December 15, 2015 meeting were approved by hard copy vote. Report of the Secretary: Secretary Matina E. Johnson reported that we welcomed a new member this month - Susan Lingevitch. She will receive a welcome letter and a roster, and will be introduced in the Welcome to the Membership section of the upcoming E-Express. The Bluebonnet Yorkshire Terrier Club was granted permission to hold one (1) Specialty show (Sweepstakes and Conformation) on Friday, July 8, 2016 in Mesquite, TX in conjunction with the YTCA Roving National. The Bluebonnet Yorkshire Terrier Club was also granted permission to hold one (1) Specialty show (Sweepstakes and Conformation) on their regular show date of Friday, September 16, 2016 in Mesquite, TX. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater Kansas City requested a date change for their upcoming March Specialties a week ahead of their regular date since the All-Breed clubs they were going in with took over a new date. A Board vote was needed order to approve this, and approval was granted for Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater Kansas City to hold two concurrent Specialties - the first Sweepstakes and Specialty Show on Thursday, March 10, 2016, and the second Sweepstakes and Specialty Show on Saturday, March 12, The Ohio Valley Yorkshire Terrier Club of Kentucky was granted permission to hold one (1) Sweepstakes and two (2) back-to-back (a.m. and p.m.) Specialty shows (Conformation) on Saturday, June 18, 2016 in Louisville, KY. Report of the Treasurer: Treasurer Rob Franzoni reported the following: YTCA Inc. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES: NEW YORK 2016: Vice President and Co-Show Chairman Leslie Stolfi reported that she has spoken with Cheryl, and that the room for the Board meeting will be available on Thursday, February 11 th at 5 p.m. Trophies are now complete crate pads and jeweled leads corresponding with the colors of the placements. Reserved grooming is now full. Free grooming space will be available on the balcony. A nice variety of vendors are in place Lainee Limited, SHOW Pet Grooming Products, Cindy Mattoni and Max s Closet. More raffle baskets are needed, and the grand prize for the Regional basket grossing the most number of tickets at the raffle has been increased from $100 to $300 to support the Regional clubs. ROVING NATIONAL 2016: Director Ken Lambert reported he would like to set a budget for the vendor spaces in Mesquite - $150 for a 10x10 space and $300 for a 10x20 space. The Board was in agreement. Barb King will be the Vendor Coordinator. Ken also reported that he spoke with Brenda Rogde, Show Chair for Mesquite, and they came up with the following proposed budget which the Board approved: $ hospitality bags (will also include donations) $ decorations $ finger food hors-d'oeuvres at the membership meeting It was also confirmed that trophies would be $2,000 for Conformation and $1,500 for Companion/Performance events. HEALTH COMMITTEE: Chairman Matina E. Johnson reported that we will be offering AKC Reunite PRE-PAID Microchips in New York and at the Roving National in Mesquite. We will only be charging 6

7 $25 for the chip, implantation, (which Dr. Nick Valenti will do gratis for the club and for participants), and now registration will be free as well (an additional $19.95 value). This year, we were able to get a wonderful deal, the club will not be losing any money on the cost of the pre-paid chips, and the owners will have to pay nothing additional to register the chips with AKC a win/win for all. LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE: Director Helen Scott reported that she had been in touch with Ruth Niswander and that an update will be forthcoming. Matina volunteered to serve on the committee, or help with it in any way needed, and asked that we put a link to the AKC Government Relations department s Legislative Tracking by State link ( on our website, as well as encourage members to stay informed by signing up for legislative alerts. Please contact Helen or Ruth if you are interested in serving on this very important committee for the future of our sport. NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Vice President Leslie Stolfi reported that the Nominating Committee has made their selections for the slate which will be mailed to the members on or before February 15th. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: POLICY MANUAL UPDATE: Director Pam Langstein reported that she is in the process of gathering materials for updating the policy manual information and format. NEW BUSINESS: PARENT CLUB SELF EVALUATION STUDY: Last month, AKC asked Parent Clubs to take part in a self-evaluation study by comparing the Parent Club s activities over their calendar year against suggested criteria including club organization and structure, membership and awards, education, canine health and welfare, and breed appropriate events and functions. President Bob Owen completed the questionnaire in all of the areas requested based on the point system supplied by the committee and criteria provided. This information will allow the Delegates Parent Clubs Committee to refine the study over time and provide better feedback to all Parent Clubs based on their self-appraisals. DUES RENEWALS: Director Ken Lambert made a motion to outsource the printing of the renewal notices since it is such a minimal charge. Wendy seconded the motion. Johnson reported that The Yorkshire Terrier Club of Greater Houston was granted permission to hold one (1) Sweepstakes and one (1) Specialty show (Conformation), on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Houston, TX. A new member packet with roster was mailed to Susan Lingevitch. The 2016 Slate cover letter, along with the 4 (front & back) questionnaires (5 pages total), have already been mailed prior to February 15 th as per the ByLaws. An was sent to all Committee Chairs requesting a progress update in advance of the New York Board and General Membership meetings. The AKC online event information for Conformation, Sweeps, Junior Showmanship, Agility, Obedience and Rally have been completed for Mesquite. The online judges panel is pending. Agility and Obedience judges have been hired, and those contracts have been fully executed. Report of the Treasurer: Secretary Matina E. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES: NEW YORK 2016: Vice President Leslie Stolfi reported that we are thrilled with the entry! Rotations on Sunday were discussed, as well as who will manage the gate and catalog sales. We are looking forward to a wonderful show! ROVING NATIONAL 2016: Director Ken Lambert reported that we have a commitment from the Conformation and Sweeps judges, although the contracts have not yet been executed. Director Georgina Miller made a motion that the President, as a new policy going forward, hire the Conformation and Sweeps judges. Ken Lambert seconded the motion. Voting yes: Stolfi, Johnson, Doss, Lambert, Langstein, Miller Voting No: None. Abstaining: None. Absent: Owen, Franzoni and Scott. Motion passed by majority. Director Ken Lambert made a motion that we extend the Judges Selection Preference results for from 2 years to 3 years. This will allow us to utilize more of the wonderful judges prioritized by our membership, as well as extend the efforts of this committee for an additional year. Director Pam Langstein seconded the motion. Voting yes: Stolfi, Johnson, Doss, Lambert, Langstein, Miller Voting No: None. Abstaining: None. Absent: Owen, Franzoni and Scott. HEALTH COMMITTEE: Secretary and Health Committee Chairman Matina E. Johnson reported that coordination is in place for our NY Health Clinic. Liz Medina will assist with the sign in sheet and logistics, with microchipping and Patellar exams performed by Dr. Nick Valenti. Additionally, all participants in our OFA Patellar clinic will receive a 50% discount when registering their results with OFA. Also, to note, OFA is now registering existing DNA test results for all DNA based tests, including 9

10 clear by parentage applications. The Serum Bile Acid database is available for registration as well. It is a very exciting time for our breed! NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Vice President Leslie Stolfi reported that the 2016 Slate is scheduled to mail prior to February 15 th as per the ByLaws. JUDGES EDUCATION: Kathleen Kolbert joined the meeting to report on the AKC Judges Institute in Orlando, FL, as well as the judges education process in general, as the rules for new judges continue to evolve with AKC. The institute went very well and had a wonderful turn out. On average, AKC 300 applications per year. Kathleen reported that there is a push towards education, with some foreign judges wishing to receive mentoring by phone for rare breeds. She requested that YTCA consider putting a policy in place that we will not participate in mentoring that would count towards judges education unless it takes place in person. She noted that our breed is a very complicated breed, and that education really must be in person and hands on. We are also in need of more mentors on the West Coast, and as an incentive, asked that we consider offering a travel and expenses stipend for mentors. Additionally, will also be ordering a remote for the power point to make to make the presentation more accessible in large rooms. Thank you, Kathleen, for all you do to help educate our breed s future judges! BY LAWS: President Bob Owen reported that the ByLaws Committee will be getting back to work, and to submit any suggestions to Committee Chair Marsha Greene. ACRYLIC PLAQUES: Peggy Gregson, Acrylic Plaque Chairman, provided the following written report in advance of themeeting: During 2015, we provided a total of 16 Best of Breed plaques and 3 High in Trial plaques to the Regional clubs. These were provided to ten separate clubs. I am still getting the plaques made in Mississippi at J & N Trophies. The price is reasonable, and they are very quick to supply the needed plaques. If I am attending the Specialty, I will hand deliver the plaques, and if not, I mail them in USPS provided boxes for less than $6.00. My goal this year is to provide plaques to every club for their Specialty. 11 5/15/ YTC of Oklahoma City 5/21/ YTC of Los Angeles 8/21/ Delaware Valley YTC 10/9/ YTC of the Nation s Capitol 10/17/ YTC of Northern California 12/3/ Mount Ranier YTC YTCA AWARDS: Faye Mitchell, Awards Committee Chairman, provided the following written report in advance of the meeting: Awards earned and presented to members during 2015: Championships 67 Grand Champions 25 Rally Titles 10 Obedience Titles 5 Agility Titles 63 CGC Titles 3 CGCA 11 And the Club should be extremely proud of our Yorkshire Terriers earning titles in new events: Dock Dogs Titles 4 Coursing Title 1 Earthdog Title 1 Total Medallions sent out: 190 Congratulations to all teams working hard to bring our breed to the forefront with their capabilities. New for 2015 awards will be the TOP RALLY DOGS, as well as Top Obedience and Top Agility plaques. The deadline for applications for the C/P awards that are presented at the National Roving Specialty will be March 1 annually. This gives the participants more time to gather up their scores, and allows the Chair more time to determine the winners. This also allows time for all members to rest just a bit after the YTCA New York Winter Specialty. Also, this allows time for the Chair to finish the NY awards, then to be able to concentrate on our Roving. Awards being presented in New York this year may seem like we are short from some prior years. There were people who did not apply for awards they would have won. Our hearty congrats to those who did apply, and awards will be presented during the General Membership meeting. There soon will be some clarification statements on the members only section of the website regarding applications for different awards, and this should stop a lot of questions people have about how the awards work. Thanks again to the Board of Directors for placing faith in me to continue as Awards Chair for another year. I love doing this for all the winners. 11

12 YTCA FOUNDATION: Mary Trimble, President of the YTCA Foundation, provided a written report on the Foundation s 2015 Accomplishments, which are many, as well as a copy of their 2015 Treasurer's Report. The full reports are attached to the minutes. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: POLICY MANUAL UPDATE: Director Pam Langstein is working on the policy manual and will get back with us on a completion date. POWER POINT UPDATE: Director Georgina Miller reported that the judges education power point update is nearing completion. Each slide was examined, and the Board was in agreement that it is moving in the right direction. Suggestions for changes by the Board will be sent to Director Georgina Miller who is coordinating the presentation. NEW BUSINESS: 2017 NEW YORK SPECIALTY SHOW: President Bob Owen reported that Cheryl Rangel has once again agreed to be the Show Chair. Thank you, Cheryl! This concluded the business of the meeting. Report of the President: President Bob Owen welcomed everyone to NY, and reminded those in attendance that this is a General Meeting, but not the Annual Meeting of the club, which will take place at our Roving National in Mesquite, TX. He recognized the Board Officers and Directors in attendance (listed above), as well as our fabulous Show Committee: Cheryl Rangel and Vice President Leslie Stolfi (Co-Show Chairs/Vendors), Pam Langstein (Reserved Seating), Wendy Doss (Trophies), Kathleen Kolbert (Judges Mentoring), Neil Feerrar (Reserved Grooming), Matina Johnson (Health Committee) and Georgina Miller (Safety Coordinator). The problem was the area for grooming was improperly measured by the hotel staff and spaces had to be shortened. The aisle ways between the grooming spaces on the short ends of the ring were too narrow. We should limit the 17

18 number of grooming spaces to at the most. We can shorten the ring a bit in order to provide better walkways on those two ends. Taping off the seating area in the second row on the short end will also help not allowing spectators to climb over grooming tables in the far corner. We didn t utilize all the table space in the room outside the ballroom. While the aisle ways have to be kept clear for fire laws, we could shorten up that area and maybe put the two exercise pens up against the back wall to leave more space for free grooming in the smaller outer room. We really need to concentrate on attracting more vendors to the show. This is our biggest revenue and having only 3 paying exhibits is not enough. They weren t at the Penn either, but have chosen the Pier to sell their products. Contacting them earlier for perhaps a satellite booth would be in our best interest. There was a significant decrease in the number of raffle baskets this year. I personally brought the majority of the silent auction items to be sold. We need to ask our members to clean out their closets with unused Yorkie items and donate them to the show. New York is an expensive venue and we need to figure out ways to keep the bottom line in the black. Stud dog, brood bitch, cut down dogs and bitches classes and Best Bred By Exhibitor need to be held before Best of Breed. There is a 15 minute break after bitches and before Breed so these can be run at that time. If we want to promote the entries in those classes, it needs to be with an audience watching. Unfortunately, everyone leaves once Breed is over. I don t believe there is a rule when they have to be held so we could adjust the schedule with the superintendent for next year. Would Greater New York consider separating their month dog and bitch class into and so it is the same as YTCA? It seemed to be very confusing to exhibitors this year that each show had a difference in those classes. We definitely need to call upon our members to assist at this show. ½ hour is not a lot to ask someone to work and we were stretched very thin with assistance. I realize two of the board members couldn t attend and Ken Lambert was very helpful in working at and getting other people to man the raffle table, but Georgina was trying to do the gate and raffle table, Wendy was helping with the trophies, Leslie was busy and I was swamped trying to put out all the fires! Neil, Ivan, Carol and Leslie did a fabulous job assisting me setting up everything on Friday, but we were the only ones there to take it all down on Sunday. With the size membership we have there should be a way to get people, especially new members attending this show, to participate. Perhaps a signup sheet on line or in the EExpress? Since our show had the largest number of entries in the last 5 years we are doing something right! I d like to see the trend continue. I kept the trophy budget intact and am running out of ideas for trophies however everyone does seem to like the crate pads and beds. I will need to find a new supplier for the beds next year as Tina Misko has stated she won t be making them anymore. Wayne from Lainee Ltd sold me the leads at a discount, I bought the crystals and Kimberly Gierlach was kind enough to do the 18

19 bejeweled work on them. We have kept our rosette prices down by ordering direct from the superintendent so there are very few leftovers. I welcome any and all suggestions to help make this an even more fabulous venue than it already is. Now is the time to implement new thoughts and procedures. ROVING NATIONAL MESQUITE: Director Ken Lambert reported the following: a. Logo Wear There will be 2 options and several color choices available for pre-order. b. Performance Ribbons The stock of performance ribbons has been evaluated we are in good shape for Mesquite. c. Dinner The cost will be $45, which includes tax. d. Photographer - Julien & Lambert Photographic Services (no relation to Director Ken Lambert) There will be no charge incurred to us for the photographers electric and internet, so the cost to the club will be lunch for the 2 photographers for 3 days. Along with our exhibitors getting their show photos, our club will receive a CD with the winners, and a $100 gift certificate to use in our auction. e. Agility Equipment Dallas has declined to give us access to their agility equipment. Pam and Bill Wengorovius have graciously agreed to bring the agility equipment in a trailer from Michigan. Ken suggested that YTCA compensate them $500 for rental and $200 for cartage, for a total of $700, which is less than it cost us to rent the equipment in Louisville. The other advantage is that the agility equipment will be customized to our small breed and we know what we will be getting. f. Lunches The hotel will provide a concession stand for exhibitor lunches. ROVING NATIONAL 2017 WILLIAMSBURG: Director Ken Lambert reported that we are looking for a Show Chair for our Williamsburg Roving National in October 2017, so any member interested is encouraged to contact Ken for more information. HEALTH COMMITTEE: Secretary and Health Committee Chairman Matina E. Johnson reported that coordination is in place for our upcoming Roving National Health Clinic in Mesquite, TX. Secretary Matina E. Johnson commented that the Run for the Roses site worked really well, particularly for the Louisville Health Clinic with registrations and cross-promotion. 24 Accomplishments of the YTCA Foundation for 2015 The year 2015 was very productive for the YTCA Foundation. We began by increasing membership to accomplish more goals while planning for the future. The Foundation has been gradually building the Board as workload demands. The Current By-Laws provide for the Board of Directors not to exceed twenty (20) people. As always, we continue striving for a better quality of life for the current and future generations of our beloved breed. The Foundation continued the third of a series of educational webinars under the direction of LaDonna Reno. Dr. Larry Snyder presented Advances of Stem Cell Research. Dr. Snyder, a practicing veterinarian, has been using clinically, and advocating for adult stem cell therapy in animals since He is currently involved in 50 adult stem cell cases in dogs, cats, kangaroos, and donkeys, and even a black bear many with positive results. Also Dr. Snyder is actively involved in basic stem cell research at Kansas State University. These are not embryonic stem cells (that are controversial in human medicine) but are healing cells from the actual dog (animal), in a concentrated and activated form, ready to start the healing process with no chance of a negative reaction. Hip dysplasia, degenerative or injured muscles/tendons, osteoarthritis, autoimmune disease and cognitive dysfunction are just a few diseases that adipose stem cell therapy treats. This state-of-the-art research is critical to both man and dog. Dr. Snyder discussed the latest advances in stem cell research, presenting several cases and the positive healing that occurred in each dog. A colleague of Dr. Snyder s did a very promising case study in 2014 on a dog with MVD. His colleague treated an 8-year old Pomeranian Stormy who had MVD, (form of liver shunt) bile acids of 104, and a very small liver. On July 14, 2014 Stormy was given adipose derived stem cells, 65 million IV and 26 million IP. Approximately 5 months later, bile acids tested at 9 and an x-ray showed the silhouette of the liver area to be much more normal in shape. They are not sure why this happened or whether it is permanent, perhaps blood flow was re-established around or through the liver, but this is very exciting since liver shunt is in the Yorkshire Terrier breed. We are always excited with any new research that can benefit our beloved animals. After each segment of Dr. Snyder s presentation questions were answered. We were happy to have new attendees at this very successful webinar. We will continue to explore this avenue of education for Yorkshire Terrier owners and dog owners in general. 25 This year the Grants Committee looked at two Tracheal Collapse studies. One study was from Michigan State University and one from North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. Both Universities are quite far along in their research having both affected and unaffected Yorkshire Terrier samples. We are very excited to see this advance with the goal of a DNA test to enable breeders to base decisions on. We anxiously wait for MAF or CHF to accept these important studies. In addition, we looked at a grant proposal for Protein Losing Enteropathy. This is also of great interest to our breed. The researchers are in process of reaching out to other breed clubs to help fund this PLE study. We are awaiting more information on this study. As always, we continue to check MAF and CHF for any research of great interest to our breed. We studied and investigated a vast number of research, but none met the required criteria for funding The AKC Canine Health Foundation s 2015 National Parent Club Canine Health Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, sponsored and co-hosted by the Nestle Purina PetCare Company was attended by Linda Grimm and Janet Jackson in August. AKC/CHF is celebrating 25 years and $44 million in research and educational programs since We were proud to represent the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Foundation as several of the presenters represented grants for which our Foundation has been a sponsor. Researchers from all over the world presented twenty different topics during the three-day conference. Presentations of particular interest to Yorkshire Terriers were Canine Cancer (particularly lymphoma), Stem Cell Therapy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Cranial Cruciate Ligament Disease, and Senior Cognition and Brain Aging. Dr. Kenneth Simpson specifically used the Yorkshire Terrier in his slide presentation on PLE. This form of IBD is currently 50% fatal with current treatments available. Many of us have been advised to use medium chain triglycerides (coconut oil, etc.) for dogs with IBD and it was interesting to hear these are a component of new senior dog foods. Medium chain triglycerides were also mentioned as very important in the presentation on Senior Cognition and Brain Aging. They help as an energy source for the aging brain s ability to use glucose. The programs that included stem cell therapy were also of particular interest since the Foundation has had the privilege of working with and producing webinars on stem cell therapy with Dr. Larry Snyder from Topeka, Kansas. Canine researchers seem to be at the top of the field when it comes to stem cell therapy and many are now working along with human researchers in this area of an intriguing and innovating approach to regenerative medicine. The conference left them with a renewed enthusiasm for the importance of preventing, treating, and curing canine disease. Donations, memorials, and auctions produced an income of $4, for the year. Our expenses incurred were $1,819.79, down from the previous year due to the fact that grants we studied did not yet meet the criteria for 2015 funding. The breakdown of income and expenses is shown in the following pie charts. The Financial Committee plans to continue next year s budget priorities and allocation of funds with the approval of the Board members. ~ 25 ~

Lucky bidders purchased many vintage and collectible items. We made a profit of $2,700. We were again fortunate this year to obtain generous donations from two estates of yorkie fanciers and former collectors. We look forward to presenting more of these wonderful donations and highly collectable artwork/sculptures in an additional auction planned for the summer of The online auction is our biggest source of annual revenue so we are always delighted with donations from our supporters of the Yorkshire Terrier. In September, The Central Florida Yorkshire Terrier Club allowed us space at their 2015 Specialty to display the goals, health information, and research being supported by the Foundation. Cynthia Garrett, a CFYTC member, set up an auction table ($200) along with the YTCA Foundation informational board. Various brochures, prior YT health survey, and information on grants funded were on display in the main showroom with many visitors/exhibitors expressing interest in the works of the Foundation. We would like to thank everyone who stopped by to view the information and those who bid on our auction. During the month of December, The YTCA Foundation Informational board and the Smoky Canine Cancer Campaign were displayed at the AKC Meet the Breed Yorkshire Terrier booth at the Eukanuba Dog Shows in Orlando, Florida. Gloria and Jennifer shared our info with many visitors. They had great intentions of presenting the Advances of Stem Cell Research webinar by Dr. Larry Snyder; but the lack of electricity and space made it impossible. Charter Foundation member, Deloras Maas, MSW, ACSW, a widely respected and admired breeder of Yorkshire Terriers, retired from the Board in We are pleased that she will remain active as a Consultant to the Board and continue to share her vast experience and knowledge. We thank Deloras Maas for her 24 years of serving on the YTCA Foundation Board since its inception and her dedication as Treasurer from LaDonna Reno, another respected breeder retired after serving on the Board for 6 years. LaDonna supported us in many avenues; she oversaw and implemented the webinars, attended the CHF Seminar in St. Louis, represented the YTCAF and manned the table at the National Roving Specialty. Cookie, a longtime yorkie owner and breeder, has been active in Conformation and Obedience since She served as Webmaster for the YTCA website from 1999 till 2013 and also served on the YTCA Board from 2013 to She is also Webmaster for the Louisiana Kennel Club, YTCA member, and Vice President of the Pontchartrain Kennel Club. Susan, a nurse manager for Aetna, earned her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Penn State. An avid Yorkshire Terrier owner and fancier she is also a member of the YTCA. Currently she is actively training her yorkie for pet therapy certification. Susan is very interested in the health and welfare of our breed. Neil Feerrar has been raising and showing yorkies for the past 35 years, a hobby he enjoys. Neil was impressed with the work of the Foundation and pleased that he can be part of the work to resolve health issues within the Yorkshire Terrier breed. He is a member of the YTCA and Delaware Valley Yorkshire Terrier Club. We welcome Gloria Lyon as our new Treasurer. Gloria Lyon is a breeder/exhibitor, with her husband Robbe under the Lynworth name. She joined YTCA in 1979 and has always been an active member of her local yorkie club. Now retired from veterinary hospital management, she lives in Arlington, WA where she serves on the County s Animal Advisory Board, supports the Lake City Food bank with clerical skills, and keeps up with frequent family activities. A complete audit of our books took place in August under the direction of Sharon McCadam, Doreen Hubbard, and Robbe Lyon. This benefited the outgoing Treasurer (Deloras) and the incoming Treasurer (Gloria) who is now bonded. We are looking forward to a successful 2016 as we move forward to a healthier future for our Yorkshire Terriers. 40 Yorkies In The Other Rings!! We re coming up to another Yorkshire Terrier Club of America National Specialty! This is our, the Companion/Performance folks, time to strut our stuff. It is the one time of the year to show other Yorkie people what we can do. As a group we seldom get a chance to be at a trial with other Yorkies so this is very special for us. It was wonderful last year to have the great audience watching in agility. This year agility is first so people need to come early to watch. One thing that we found out last year was that people don t understand how our games work, it may be fun to watch but it helps to know a bit about how the games is played. We have three Companion Events at our National if we had Earth Dog, we would have a Performance event, but we wouldn t go there this year. YTCA offers two trials in Agility, two trials in Obedience and two trials in Rally. We start to plan months in advance, even before we know where the National will be. There is a lot to fit in a limited amount of time and we always end up wishing for more time. Agility you know that game with all the fun looking equipment has two basic types of classes and then subdivisions of each. There are Standard Classes, those are the ones with the A-frame, Dog Walk, teeter etc and the Jumpers With Weaves where you have just jumps and weave poles. These are divided into two groups the Regular group and the Preferred group. Preferred dogs may be older or for some other reason will jump a jump height lower than Regular. In each of these, the dog only competes and is judged with dogs that measure in his/her same jump height. Most Yorkies jump in Regular at 8 or 12 with an occasional 14 very rare. In Preferred most Yorkies jump 4 or 8. Within each there are different levels of achievement so the dog is only competing with dogs at their same skill level as well as height. The dog starts at Novice A or B depending if their handler has ever put a Novice title on a dog, then moves to Open, then Excellent and finally Master. We usually have 22 classes in each trial that we offer. Plus two more in a special Game called Time To Beat. Between the two trials we have to be prepared to give out 46 first place trophies, not that we usually have that many to cover but we need to be ready. The entry fee paid for each dog that runs in both Standard and ~ 40 ~

41 Jumpers With Weaves is $56 and most of our dogs run both trials so that is $112 if they run Time To Beat at both trials that will add up to be $164. Many of us run more than one dog so we multiply that per dog. ** Oh, and check out walk the course under Rally to know what in heck people are doing walking around without their dog before they run. ** It takes a dedicated crew to be out there moving equipment. Each skill level means a change in equipment configuration. We are very, very lucky to have YTCA members, Bill and Pam Wengorovius who have chaired and secretaries every YTCA agility trial. Bill and his helper Don Wolff are the muscle that is out there moving the equipment with the help of any handler that has the time. This year on Thursday, while many of you are showing in Conformation, the Obedience ring will be in full swing. Like agility, Obedience has many classes most of which change by skill level. This is the first year that AKC has offered the alternative titling track call Preferred. For the dog starting out, AKC offers an Optional titling class called Beginning Novice. This is a great way for the new dog and or new handler to get that first ring experience. This class has signs like Rally so the judge isn t calling heeling commands. There are no group exercises and everything is just a bit simpler. The regular titling classes in Obedience are divide into A or B with A being for a handler who has not put that particular title on a dog. You start at Novice, work to Open and then Utility. After Utility there are other titling opportunities but the basic exercises remain the same. In the new Preferred titling track there are no group exercises and the jump heights are half the height of the Regular classes. Outside of that the exercises are the same. This is a wonderful opportunity for the smaller and/or older dog. There are also some Optional titling classes besides Beginning Novice, these are Graduate Novice, Graduate Open and Graduate Utility. These classes offer some of the elements of the regular classes but with some changes. We also offer the non-regular Classes of Brace and Veterans. Brace is for two dogs, hopefully, working together. All in all we offer 16 Obedience classes per trial so that is 32 total for both trials. This means we need to be ready to cover all 32 classes with trophies and ribbons just in case we have entries in all. Again many of our handlers will enter the same dog in more than one class and a number of us have more than one dog that we show with in Obedience. We pay the same $30 for the first class and $26 for a second class per dog per trial. Oh, and many, in fact in most years the majority, of these Obedience dogs also do agility. ~ 41 ~

42 Our last sport, on Friday this year, is Rally. Rally started with the idea that it would be a beginning step into Obedience but it has become a sport onto itself. Rally also has A and B levels based on the handler s experience. Again the dog starts in Novice, moves to Advanced and the on to Excellent. Instead of a judge calling out commands the handler follows a course with signs that indicate what exercise that needs to be done at that sign. There are numerous possible signs that can be used but not all are used in any one course so the team has to know all at their level just in case. As in agility, the course changes each time you enter the ring. ** As in agility the handler is given a time to walk the course to study and familiarize themselves with what they need to do. This is done without the dog. It looks a little crazy out there but it is very serious work. ** Rally is a bit less formal and more relaxed than Obedience but most Rally people will argue that point with Obedience people. There are 7 Rally classes offered per trial at an YTCA Roving for a total of 14 for both trials. Oh, yes the entry fees are the same as in Agility and Obedience and yes there are a number of people who add Rally to Obedience and Agility for their YTCA National Roving experience! This is a crash course on Companion Events at an YTCA National Roving. And if you have been counting and want to check your figures, that is a total of 92 classes offered in the three Companion events. That s a possibility of 92 first, second, third and fourth place ribbons with trophies. Yes, we know that we don t fill all four placements in every class but we would like to! And even if a dog doesn t place, it may qualify as we are judged against a standard and not another team. None of this happens without a willing crew of volunteers that help during each event, ring crew, stewards, trophy table and so on. It is our only time to strut our stuff and we like to make the most of it that we can. This is where we get our YTCA recognitions and awards for what we have done in the past year, it is when we get to see each other from across the county, it is where we get to see what is happening in the breed ring and check out what the breeders have for us to play with in the future. A common discussion among us starts with, What breeder did you get your dog from? We are watching what you are showing in your ring. We are looking for solid structure, good movement, and dependable temperament as well as healthy and happy dogs. These are very important to us. We are looking for dogs that will stay with us as healthy, active team mates for a number of years. It takes time to develop the strong working relationship that we need for what we do with our dog partner. So whether or not you will be watching us in the ring, we will be watching you. 46 Our Greatest Award, Ever THE PURPLE CROSS Smoky received the world's highest and rarest honor bestowed on an Animal hero for bravery. Smoky is only the 9th in 162 years to receive Australia's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals' (RSPCA) the PURPLE CROSS. The first dog a Silky was from the Crimean War of The second were Donkeys that carried out wounded on litters under heavy artillery fire for 31/2 weeks in WWI in 1915 during the battle of Gallapolis. Pvt.Simpson Kirkpatrick their handler was KIA during the fourth week of the horrific battle. This photo of Smoky, and Bill Wynne owner and trainer was taken a Dec.15'15 at Cleveland MetroParks, one of Smoky' six memorials in the U.S. Three more are to be dedicated in ( PA, CA and N.J.) Here, Smoky is being constantly decorated with flowers and clothes to keep her wram by someone unknown for over a year. Someone who loves her very much. Smoky is wearing her Purple Cross. Beside her on the left is her certificate awarded in Australia on Dec. 11, Pamela Bobst Mayor of Rocky River, Ohio made the presentation of Smoky's Purple Cross to Bill on Dec.11,'15 here in America. The city of Rocky River is near Smoky's monument which is being featured on the TRAVEL CHANNEL'S " Monumental Mysteries."There were 143 in attendance. The 2" medal is big on the four pound Yorkie. 49 Official Standard of the Yorkshire Terrier General Appearance That of a long-haired toy terrier whose blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of body. The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self importance. Head Small and rather flat on top, the skull not too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long, with the bite neither undershot nor overshot and teeth sound. Either scissors bite or level bite is acceptable. The nose is black. Eyes are medium in size and not too prominent; dark in color and sparkling with a sharp, intelligent expression. Eye rims are dark. Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart. Body Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump. Legs and Feet Forelegs should be straight, elbows neither in nor out. Hind legs straight when viewed from behind, but stifles are moderately bent when viewed from the sides. Feet are round with black toenails. Dew claws, if any, are generally removed from the hind legs. Dew claws on the forelegs may be removed. Tail Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back. Coat Quality, texture and quantity of coat are of prime importance. Hair is glossy, fine and silky in texture. Coat on the body is moderately long and perfectly straight (not wavy). It may be trimmed to floor length to give ease of movement and a neater appearance, if desired. The fall on the head is long, tied with one bow in center of head or parted in the middle and tied with two bows. Hair on muzzle is very long. Hair should be trimmed short on tips of ears and may be trimmed on feet to give them a neat appearance. Colors Puppies are born black and tan and are normally darker in body color, showing an intermingling of black hair in the tan until they are matured. Color of hair on body and richness of tan on head and legs are of prime importance in adult dogs, to which the following color requirements apply: BLUE: Is a dark steel blue, not a silver blue and not mingled with fawn, bronzy or black hairs. TAN: All tan hair is darker at the roots than in the middle, shading to still lighter tan at the tips. There should be no sooty or black hair intermingled with any of the tan. Color on Body The blue extends over the body from back of neck to root of tail. Hair on tail is a darker blue, especially at end of tail. Head fall A rich golden tan, deeper in color at sides of head, at ear roots and on the muzzle, with ears a deep rich tan. Tan color should not extend down on back of neck. Chest and Legs A bright, rich tan, not extending above the elbow on the forelegs nor above the stifle on the hind legs. Weight Must not exceed seven pounds. Disqualification Any solid color or combination of colors other than blue and tan as described above.
