Robert Owen, President 822 Freeman Lake Road Elizabethtown, KY Telephone (270) ~ Owen@kvnet.org Dear Members, By the time you read this, the Holidays will have passed and you will have made your plans to attend the YTCA's New York National Specialty show. Cheryl Rangel is the Show Chair, and the theme for this year is "Be My Yorkie-Tine". The Specialty is scheduled to be held at the Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan on Sunday, February 9, 2014 for both Sweepstakes and Conformation classes. We should, once again, have a lovely showcase of some of the best Yorkies from this country, as well as other countries. Our show will be preceded by the Progressive Dog Club show on Friday, and the Greater New York's show on Saturday. It will be followed by the Westminster Kennel Club show on Monday and Tuesday. A Membership Meeting and Awards Presentation will be held on Friday afternoon at the hotel with a dinner at Carmine's Italian Restaurant on Saturday evening. It looks like another promising year in the Big Apple for Yorkies and exhibitors! If you have never been, you are missing out on a real treat. Your Officers and Directors have been working diligently during the few short months they have been in office. We have opened up a new Announcement List on Yahoo Groups for YTCA official business announcements for the club members and it is growing rapidly. If you have not signed up, please do so. We have the By-Laws Committee working on making a few changes that the members have requested concerning the requirement of owning a Yorkie at the time a new member applies for membership, creating an Associate Membership, and restoring previous privileges to our International Members who were members in good standing during the club year. These changes will be voted on by the membership in the near future. Content Management, which is under the leadership of Ken Lambert, is now in place for our website which will save a good amount of money. We also have a DQ Committee looking at the DQ again before sending it out on a ballot for membership vote. We are in the process of naming a new Delegate from those names being submitted by the 3

Nominating Committee. After tornadoes ravaged the Midwest, the Board voted to send our Annual Sunshine Remembrance Donation in the amount of $ to the AKC ReUnite Disaster Assistance Response Trailers program which is vitally important and deserving of our support. The YTCA's Roving Specialty has become a major event for our Club with conformation, obedience, agility and rally all offered, along with educational seminars, a dinner and a membership meeting. Vicki Meadows is the 2014 Roving Show Chair. Be sure and start making your plans to travel to St. Louis during the last week of August. The Club will need members to volunteer to make it a success. The YTCA will join with the Gateway Toy Dog Fanciers and St. Louis Dog Breeders Association for five days of shows and trials at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, MO. There should be plenty of shows, special events, and local attractions for everybody to have a great time! Here's wishing everyone a wonderful 2014 with good sportsmanship, many wins, and much happiness. Sincerely, Bob 4

President Robert Owen called the meeting to order. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING: The minutes of the September 30, 2013 Board Meeting were approved by the majority and a hard copy received. SECRETARY S REPORT: Secretary Wendy Doss reported that she received copies of two new member applications from the membership committee, which are still in the process of committee review. Received also was a correspondence from AKC regarding their appointments for nominating committee Class of 2018, Charles Garvin, Ronald H. Menaker, and Patricia Scully. Report was given status of the Official Announcement List on Yahoo Groups as well as the Facebook page and the ownership status of both. Contact has been made with member Julie Howard on this matter and we are awaiting to hear back from her. TREASURER S REPORT: Large file to be sent separately. NY SHOW COMMITTEE: REPORTS OF COMMITTEES Ken Lambert reported that he has trophies lined up for all of the classes. The theme is Be My Yorkie-Tine, and the trophies will reflect Valentine's themed colors. The logo has been done and everyone agreed that it is very nice. A discussion was held on when and where to have a membership meeting, dinner or cocktail party, and awards presentation. A tribute to Carl Yochum is planned by Matina Johnson and some of Carl's family members, which will also need to be incorporated into these gatherings. The board discussed having the meeting on Friday evening sometime after the Progressive Show, and Ken will check into the feasibility of acquiring a large conference room at the Crown Plaza for this purpose. Vicki Meadows has contacted Carmine's Restaurant about the possibility of holding a member's dinner there, which is close by in the theatre district, on Saturday evening. Both Ken and Vicki will report back. Ken also reported that the show committee has many of their volunteer positions filled. They are working and getting close to having a planning book ready for sending out. The ballroom will be open for the volunteers to decorate and set up on Friday evening at the Crown Plaza. WEBSITE: Ken Lambert reported that Content Management is now in place and we have majority of control now. JUDGES SELECTION COMMITTEE: The board received a letter of resignation from Bill Hinds as chair of the Judges Selection Committee, and he also is resigning from the Logo Committee and the EExpress Committee. 8 UNFINISHED BUSINESS AKC DELEGATE: The current nominating committee chaired by Kathleen Kolbert submitted their report back. Candidate suggestions will also be taken from the new nominating committee ROVING SPECIALTY: Proposal has been received from the YTCLA, Los Angeles, California. Since there will be more than one possibility for scheduling all of our events if we accept this proposal, Ken will find out more information so that a final decision can be voted upon. BALLOTS: Wendy Doss reported that the ballots for voting on the Judges selection list (top five for regular class judge and sweeps) and CHIC requirements are ready to be sent out. NEW BUSINESS ARMETALE PLATES: President Owen gave Pat Fallon the information for ordering more plates which are used as trophies. There is a 50 plate minimum order. Vicki Meadows volunteered to store these and be responsible for keeping them. NOMINATING COMMITTEE: Volunteer names were given to the board that were received by the Secretary. A short list has been made with geographical consideration, and these members will be contacted by Bob for affirmation. ROVING COMMITTEE GUIDELINES: Ken Lambert is working on streamlining the guidelines that are sent out to Regional Clubs and will send back for all of the board to review. E-EXPRESS: Ken needs help printing the hard copy version of the next E-Express. Wendy Doss volunteered to help Ken and get it printed at the same place we are getting the rosters printed. REAFFIRMATION OF COMMITTEES: DISQUALIFICATION COMMITTEE: Hensley made a motion that we thank the present DQ committee for all of their hard work and that we not reappoint the committee. The motion was seconded by Scott. Motion was discussed. Bob Owen gave information on the Robert's Center in central Ohio, along with information on the nearby hotel arrangements. The dates for 2014 would be in September, or if we wanted to use this for any future years, other dates could potentially be selected. DQ COMMITTEE: Helen Scott reported that she will contact the previous DQ committee Chair and see if they can share the records that they may have on file, as there are not any in the Secretary's file. PLAQUES FOR SPECIALTIES: Meadows made a motion to appoint volunteer Peggy Gregson as keeper of the acrylic plaques that are donated to the Regional Specialty Clubs for their specialty shows. Scott seconded. Motion passed unanimously. BY-LAWS COMMITTEE: Due to the resignation of Marie Kaufman-Cardona as Chair of the By-Laws committee, not from the committee itself, Scott made a motion to appoint current committee member Sharon McCadam as the new chair. NEW BUSINESS FEDERAL EXPRESS President Owen discussed that due to the need to ship many items for the club, the need for an account with Federal Express for the club, which can be easily set up. Meadows made a motion that we have the treasurer set up an account with Fed-Ex, Rogan seconded. Motion passed unanimously. TRIPLE CROWN AWARD: President Bob Owen reported that the requirements were met and that the Triple Crown Award has been awarded to Faye Mitchell. ANNOUNCEMENT LIST and FACEBOOK: Jennie Wright made a motion, seconded by Cookie Rogan, as follows: The official announcement list was set up to allow the Board to post announcements and the announcements were sent out by the secretary or president. In ARTICLE II Section 2 c In the Bylaws it is written under Secretary duties " he/she shall have charge of the correspondence". It is now a new board and the responsibility of notifications/correspondence with the members should rightfully be handled only by a member of the board directly to each individual member and not through another member unless that member has been appointed to perform that job as a committee of the Board. It also states in ARTICLE IV Section 1 Each retiring officer shall turn over to his/her successor in office all properties and records relating to that office by the first day of July (which gives them a month to get it to the new Board). Arrangements should be made to do that either through the president or the director who is holding said property or records. This is a YTCA Official Board List and was set up for the express purpose for the Board to send YTCA Announcements to the members, It was not to be done by a third party. ALL announcements to be posted to this list must first be approved by the majority of the Board to be sent out. Due to the fact that former board member Julie Howard refuses to give up ownership and control of the official announcement list to the current board we must take action. We feel it is in the best interest of the club to simply create a new official announcement list. We feel that choosing this inconvenience while impacting each and every member will do more toward the healing of the club while following the bylaws. We are very sorry for the inconvenience that we are asking the membership to endure and we thank you for your patience. Motion passed unanimously. Hensley made a motion to notify all members of the move to a new YTCA Announcement List on Yahoo Groups, Rogan seconded. Voting yes: Owens, Meadows, Doss, Fallon, Hensley, Rogan, Scott, Wright. Voting No: Lambert. Motion passed. 10

In memory of Ric Ross Ric was a dear, sweet generous person who was highly involved with Yorkie rescue. For the Yorkshire Terrier Club of Los Angeles YTCLA he would put on our rescue parades at our annual specialties. He also was so proud of his first and only champion, CH Bejaze Southern Comfort - "Bubba," bred by Linda Bush. He was also proud when his dog Beau graced the cover of a calendar. Anyone who knew Ric will miss him. A number of years ago he had moved to South Carolina from California. He was so proud of his new home and so happy to be near his family. Rest in peace dear Ric. The rescue parade was something Ric really took a lot of pride in and rightfully so. He worked very hard to find just the right homes for his rescues and wanted everyone to know what a wonderful addition a rescue could be to someone s life. He had such a soft spot for the little seniors and gave quite a few a wonderful life in his home even if it was for a short time like his Miss Wuzie or his little Timmy. I remember a little old man that Ric rescued and placed with a lady named Lynn, the dog s name was Rusty, another little senior that everyone passed by at the shelter except Ric, he could not get there fast enough to get Rusty out. I know for him he was always so happy he could give the poor little discarded dogs a warm, loving home at the end of their lives. His first rescue was Sweetie, from what I understand he got her from someone who had found her or did not want her anymore but when it came time to surrender her to a rescue group he just could not do it, and that was what started Ric down the road to doing rescue work. I have heard from several people who have said that they became rescuers because of Ric, and I know he opened many people s eyes to the joys of adopting a rescue. We will never know how many little dogs have been saved because of Ric s efforts but I know it is quite a few, and his good work continues through so many he knew in his lifetime. Like so many have said, he will be missed on so many levels.

Yorkies In The Other Rings!!! By Judy Casserburg We now know the date and location of the next YTCA Roving and it is time for some of the hard work to get done. Our Committee was asked why we picked the judges that we did in Memphis. Well, we as a Committee didn t pick them. We were asked for a suggestion of some names of judges and then Bob Owen worked off that list to see who was available when we needed them. In suggesting names we looked at judges who lived in proximity to Memphis. It was a difficult job for Bob as we didn t know the dates for the Memphis Roving until late Fall. We face a similar situation this year. If we, as a club, worked further in advance we would be able to have a wider choice of judges as fewer would be already booked. Hopefully the Club will work towards this goal in coming years. Not all Obedience, Rally and Agility judges are equally competent and not all judges work well with small dogs. Anyone who has shown in our rings for any length of time can tell stories about judges who tower over small dogs as they bend over for examination and I had one judge who almost clipped Emma on her chin with his clipboard as he bent over her. His hand with the clipboard dropped considerably as he bent over and it didn t happen with larger dogs at the trial. We were in a trial with an Agility judge last year who make a big show about what a pain it was to lower the A-frame for the smaller dogs, not small dog friendly in my book and few small dogs qualified under him. He is not someone that I would spend my money showing under again but the big dog people loved him. It would be nice if we Companion/Performance people were able to suggest a list of judges as the Conformation people do. This way we could have a list of judges that we as competitors have found to work well with small dogs ~ 17 ~

and are in our minds competent judges. It is something that we as a Committee will be discussing and forwarding a suggestion on to the Board about. In the meantime we would love to hear what you look for in A Companion or Performance Event judge. Be specific and if you want to name names, do so. Contact any of us on the Companion/Performance Committee and share what you look for both positive and negative in a judge. We will put the information together and see if we can t format a good check list as well as a list of yes and no names. This would be a great tool for looking for judges in the future. We understand the need to find judges that are not too awful expensive to bring in but we would like to be able to offer the best judges available in our sports at our National Specialty. Obedience and Rally Regulation Changes There are some new Obedience and Rally Regulations that will be in effect January 1, 2013! 1. Allow premium lists to measure not less than 5½ x 8½ inches up to 8½ x 11 inches. (Obedience Regulations Chapter 1, Section 3) 2. Require clubs to refund the entry fee for females in season. A processing fee may be retained by the club. (Obedience Regulations Chapter 1, Section 14) 3. Allow clubs, at their option, to establish a wait list to fill openings created by entries that are withdrawn prior to the event closing date. (Obedience Regulations Chapter 1, Section 27) 4. Allow dogs to be picked up by their handlers when they are called back into the ring for the awards ceremony. (Obedience Regulations Chapter 2, Sections 11 & 22) ~ 18 ~

5. Allow rally ring sizes to be determined by square footage (2,000 to 3,000 square feet, with a minimum width of 30 feet). This will provide clubs flexibility in determining the location of their rally trial, perhaps allowing them to lower their cost. While the square footage area listed above is the minimum size allowed, a 40 x 50 or 50 x 60 ring size is ideal for rally. (Rally Regulations Chapter 2, Section 1) I am especially happy to see #4. It is always a bit disconcerting waiting outside the gate, with my dog on a leash at my side, to enter the ring for awards. It is an especially emotional area for dogs and handlers. AKC must be commended by small dog people for making this rule change. Although we all still have many concerns, especially surrounding the Sit and Down stay lines, AKC has made some Rule changes that are proactive to the small dogs. The Obedience jump heights were changed a few years back to accommodate smaller dogs, there has to be four feet between dogs in the stay lines and a club may choose to place the dogs by height in those lines. There are also the Pre-Novice, Pre-Open and Pre-Utility titling optional classes that do not include group stays. BUT I cannot help but think that eliminating the Group Stays would contribute to more people showing smaller dogs in Obedience and also contribute to having more people show in Open where the out of sight Stays are so upsetting. We will be busy in the coming months; August in St. Louis will come very fast! But in the meantime, do share with us your views on judges! ~ 19 ~

Help us Help you Request from the Data Base Committee The Data Base is always expanding and tracking new information. Grand Champion titles are now being tracked as well as all the other AKC titles for both conformation and companion events. We would also like to include those that received their championship points strictly from the Bred By Exhibitor Classes. So if you have a Champion that received all of his/her points from the Bred By Class, please send that information to Helen at vistayt@cox.net We are also attempting to add call names to all the dogs in the Data Base so, please send that information to Helen as well. Many great Yorkies from the past are remembered by their call name and this will be true for future Yorkie Stars as well. As you receive your CHIC numbers on your Yorkies, please send that information to Helen so that it may be included in the Data Base as well. The CHIC program will only be beneficial if we use it and the Data Base will help us do that especially in generations to come. Please also send your favorite picture, candid or show, of each of your Yorkies to be not only a part of their record but also can be displayed on their pedigree. Show records are an important part of the Database and can be abbreviated: G2-3, G4-1, B ALL of our yorkies that have been shown, titled, or within pedigrees are included in the Data Base from even prior to Huddersfield Ben to that puppy of yours that was shown last month for the first time. So we are looking for Call Names, Bred By finished, CHIC #s, Pictures and Show records to make the Database as complete as possible. Please identify information and pictures by Registered Name & Reg#. The Data Base is a great tool for us all-the more information that it contains, the greater benefit it is to the membership so help us, help you. ~ 22 ~

Free For the Asking If you are planning a breeding, researching a possible stud, or have missing information in a pedigree, contact Helen at vistayt@cox.net and she will you a beautiful, five generation pedigree. If a dog has been shown or bred, all that is needed is the name of the dog. If they have not been shown or bred, the name of the sire and dam, registration number, and date of birth are needed. Let s all take advantage of this wonderful service from the YT Pedigree Database! ~ 23 ~

IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION such as a heart attack, drowning or fall, the victim should be responded to in an appropriate manner. Administer CPR (if certified) and an ambulance should be called by dialing 911. Try to notify next of kin or a friend traveling with the group. DISASTER EVACUATION PROCEDURES 1.In the case of a severe weather storm or other instances not including a fire evacuation, leave your room immediately and head for the nearest stairwell. 2. Go to the Main Lobby area of the hotel and wait for further instructions 3. Do not stand near any windows 4. Utilize the same system for removing your dogs from the room (a large pillowcase) unless you are able to carry the crate with you. Take your room key 5. Follow instructions from hotel management and/or fire and police personnel DOG EVACUATION PROCEDURES 1. In the case of a fire or other evacuation, have a king size pillowcase nearby. Place as many dogs as possible in the pillowcase and twist the top. This will enable you to carry them out of the building safely. There is no chance of suffocation to the dogs inside the case 2. It s a good idea to keep a few leads inside the case. When you reach the outside you have some way to keep control of the animals 3. Do not endanger your life or the lives of others in your room by spending time searching for your dogs. If they are properly penned or crated, you should be able to gather them quickly and easily. PUBLIC EDUCATION Assorted informational pamphlets and handouts will be available along with AKC brochures. The Illustrated Discussion of the Yorkshire Terrier, Heritage I and Heritage II will also be available for purchase from the YTCA. 46 As with all purebred dogs recognized by the American Kennel Club, there This is an approved Breed Standard for Yorkshire Terriers. This standard of perfection is a written description of how the ideal Yorkshire Terrier should look. All responsible breeders strive to produce dogs that conform to this Breed Standard. Yorkshire Terriers with major deviations from that Standard in appearance should not be bred Official Standard of the Yorkshire Terrier. General Appearance That of a long-haired toy terrier whose blue and tan coat is parted on the face and from the base of the skull to the end of the tail and hangs evenly and quite straight down each side of body. The body is neat, compact and well proportioned. The dog's high head carriage and confident manner should give the appearance of vigor and self importance. Head Small and rather flat on top, the skull not too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long, with the bite neither undershot nor overshot and teeth sound. Either scissors bite or level bite is acceptable. The nose is black. Eyes are medium in size and not too prominent; dark in color and sparkling with a sharp, intelligent expression. Eye rims are dark. Ears are small, V-shaped, carried erect and set not too far apart. Body Well proportioned and very compact. The back is rather short, the back line level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump. Legs and Feet Forelegs should be straight, elbows neither in nor out. Hind legs straight when viewed from behind, but stifles are moderately bent when viewed from the sides. Feet are round with black toenails. Dew claws, if any, are generally removed from the hind legs. Dew claws on the forelegs may be removed. Tail Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back. Coat Quality, texture and quantity of coat are of prime importance. Hair is glossy, fine and silky in texture. Coat on the body is moderately long and perfectly straight (not wavy). It may be trimmed to floor length to give ease of movement and a neater appearance, if desired. The fall on the head is long, tied with one bow in center of head or parted in the middle and tied with two bows. Hair on muzzle is very long. Hair should be trimmed short on tips of ears and may be trimmed on feet to give them a neat appearance. Colors Puppies are born black and tan and are normally darker in body color, showing an intermingling of black hair in the tan until they are matured. Color of hair on body and richness of tan on head and legs are of prime importance in adult dogs, to which the following color requirements apply: BLUE: Is a dark steel blue, not a silver blue and not mingled with fawn, bronzy or black hairs. TAN: All tan hair is darker at the roots than in the middle, shading to still lighter tan at the tips. There should be no sooty or black hair intermingled with any of the tan. Color on Body The blue extends over the body from back of neck to root of tail. Hair on tail is a darker blue, especially at end of tail. Head fall A rich golden tan, deeper in color at sides of head, at ear roots and on the muzzle, with ears a deep rich tan. Tan color should not extend down on back of neck. Chest and Legs A bright, rich tan, not extending above the elbow on the forelegs nor above the stifle on the hind legs. Weight Must not exceed seven pounds. Disqualification Any solid color or combination of colors other than blue and tan as described above. Any white markings other than a small white spot on the forechest that does not exceed 1 inch at its longest dimension. Approved April 12, 1966 DQ added Oct. 1, 2007 ~ 46 ~
