3 News from Dogs NSW Please find below important information from Dogs NSW President, Mr Tom Couchman, on behalf of the Board of Directors, in relation to the NSW Companion Animals Taskforce Discussion Paper. It is very important that Dogs NSW Breeders and Members register an objection to Option 1 contained within this Discussion Paper. Please cross post this information to ensure that as many Members as possible are fully aware of the existence of the NSW Companion Animals Taskforce Discussion Paper and are afforded an opportunity to submit their comments. Download the NSW Companion Animals Taskforce Discussion Paper at this link: Thank you. Regards Christine Davis DOGS NSW CEO New Title - Supreme Champion The Supreme Champion title is in effect as from 1 July The following procedure is required by the office in order to verify the award; Member completes the Supreme Champion application for a dog that has already been awarded a Grand Champion title The member must provide the following details on the application: 1. the 3 All Breeds Best in Shows; or 10 Best in Group/Specialty Best in Show and the details of those 3 different Best in Show Judges or 10 different Best in Group/Specialty judges that made the awards 2. a Challenge Certificate awarded to the dog in question after 1 July 2012 The above awards will then need to be verified by the office from our Show Results. However if the member has been presented with an Award Card clearly indicating any of the above BIS or BIG wins, they could either submit a copy or present the cards at the office, which will effectively reduce the time required for the staff to verify the details. Please note that a Best In Show at a Semi-Group Show does not qualify as a BIG for the title of Supreme Champion. IMPORTANT: The Challenge Certificate mentioned above MUST have been awarded at a show held AFTER 1 July EXHIBITION OF IMPORTED DOGS It has been brought to DOGS NSW attention that imported dogs are being entered and exhibited at shows in NSW, PRIOR to being re-registered, which, in most identified cases, is in breach of Dogs NSW Regulations. This practice will be closely monitored by the Office through Show and Trial Results, and any breaches will be brought to the attention of the Board of Directors. 3

Joke corner Little Harold was practicing the violin in the living room while his father was trying to read in the den. The family dog was lying in the den, and as the screeching sounds of little Harold's violin reached his ears, he began to howl loudly. The father listened to the dog and the violin as long as he could. Then he jumped up, slammed his paper to the floor and yelled above the noise, "For Pete's sake, can't you play something the dog doesn't know?!" 4

To date the only titled black mini imported to Australia. Sadly I lost him on his 12 th Birthday. Robin made his title at 7 months in Canada with a Best in Group and Puppy in Show in 3 shows. He is the sire of two Grand Champion All Breeds Best in Show winners and he was also a multiple Best in Group and In Show plus 2 runner-up All Breed Best in Shows himself. He will be sadly missed. Denis & Catherine French were anxious to own a Rottweiler after Denis had grow up with pure breed dogs and now they both had fallen in love with this breed. From the very first time Catherine saw the girl with the green ribbon she was in love with her. Green was Catherine s favorite colour and she knew this was the only puppy for her. Porscha excelled in Obedience, and Catherine and Porscha made a great team. She will be missed. Eileen McGregor. 6

8 Top 10 Dog Poisons Dog poison No. 1: Medications for people. Drugs that might be beneficial, or even life-saving, for people can have the opposite effect in pets. And it doesn t always take a large dose to do major damage. Some of the most common and harmful medications that poison dogs include: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, which can cause stomach and intestinal ulcers or kidney failure. Antidepressants, which may cause vomiting and, in more serious instances, serotonin syndrome - a dangerous condition that raises temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure, and may cause seizures. Isoniazid, a tuberculosis drug, is difficult for dogs to process. Even one tablet can cause problems in a small dog. Signs of poisoning include seizures and coma. Dog poison No. 2: Flea and tick products. You may think you re doing your dog a favor when you apply products marketed to fight fleas and ticks, but thousands of animals are unintentionally poisoned by these products every year. Problems can occur if dogs accidentally ingest these products or if small dogs receive excessive amounts. Dog poison No. 3: People food. Your canine companion may look so cute as he sits there begging for a bite of your chocolate cake or a chip covered in guacamole, but not giving him what he wants could save his life. Animals have different metabolisms than people. Some foods and beverages that are perfectly safe for people can be dangerous, and sometimes fatal, for dogs. Chocolate. Though not harmful to people, chocolate products contain substances called methylxanthines that can cause vomiting in small doses, and death if ingested in larger quantities. Darker chocolate contains more of these dangerous substances than do white or milk chocolate. The amount of chocolate that could result in death depends on the type of chocolate and the size of the dog. For smaller breeds, just half an ounce of baking chocolate can be fatal, while a larger dog might survive eating 4 to 8 ounces. Coffee and caffeine have similarly dangerous chemicals. Alcohol. Symptoms of alcohol poisoning in animals are similar to those in people, and may include vomiting, breathing problems, coma and, in severe cases, death. Avocado. You might think of them as healthy, but avocadoes have a substance called persin that can act as a dog poison, causing vomiting and diarrhea. Macadamia nuts. Dogs may suffer from a series of symptoms, including weakness, overheating, and vomiting, after consumption of macadamia nuts. Grapes and raisins. Experts aren t sure why, but these fruits can induce kidney failure in dogs. Even a small number may cause problems in some dogs. Xylitol. This sweetener is found in many products, including sugar-free gum and candy. It causes a rapid drop in blood sugar, resulting in weakness and seizures. Liver failure also has been reported in some dogs. 8
9 Top 10 Dog Poisons Dog poison No. 4: Rat and mouse poison. Rodenticides, if ingested by dogs, can cause severe problems. The symptoms depend on the nature of the poison, and signs may not start for several days after consumption. In some instances, the dog may have eaten the poisoned rodent, and not been directly exposed to the toxin. Dog poison No. 5: Pet medications. Just as we can be sickened or killed by medications intended to help us, cases of pet poisoning by veterinary drugs are not uncommon. Some of the more commonly reported problem medications include painkillers and de-wormers. Dog poison No. 6: Household plants. They may be pretty, but plants aren t necessarily pet friendly. Some of the more toxic plants to dogs include: Azaleas and rhododendrons. These pretty flowering plants contain toxins that may cause vomiting, diarrhea, coma, and potentially even death. Tulips and daffodils. The bulbs of these plants may cause serious stomach problems, convulsions, and damage to the heart. Sago palms. Eating just a few seeds may be enough to cause vomiting, seizures, and liver failure. Dog poison No. 7: Chemical hazards. Not surprisingly, chemicals contained in antifreeze, paint thinner, and chemicals for pools can act as dog poison. The pet poisoning symptoms they may produce include stomach upset, depression, and chemical burns. Dog poison No. 8: Household cleaners. Just as cleaners like bleach can poison people, they are also a leading cause of pet poisoning, resulting in stomach and respiratory tract problems. Dog poison No. 9: Heavy metals. Lead, which may be in paint, linoleum, and batteries, can be poisonous if eaten by your dog, causing gastrointestinal and neurological problems. Zinc poisoning may occur in dogs that swallow coins, producing symptoms of weakness from severe anemia. Dog poison No. 10: Fertilizer. Products for your lawn and garden may be poisonous to pets that ingest them. *** If you suspect your dog has been poisoned, take them to your vet immediately *** 9
10 Pretty plant but it's toxic!! Brunfelsia (aka Yesterday- Today- Tomorrow) Do you have this plant in your yard? This is a species of Brunfelsia which goes by the common name of Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow. I have noticed that more and more people have this plant it their yard. It has beautiful purple flowers that then change to mauve and then to white. There are lots of varieties which vary in their shape and height but there is one thing they all share in common: they are extremely toxic to dogs. How do the dogs get poisoned? For some reason dogs like to eat this plant. They will eat the leaves, branches, cuttings, flowers and seeds. When they ingest it they develop diarrhea, salivation and neurological changes such as twitching, seizures and this can in some cases lead to death. How should I prevent it? GET RID OF IT! This plant is so tasty to dogs that they will try and eat it no matter what you do so if you have one in your yard, dig it up and get rid of any cuttings, seeds, etc left behind. Don't throw the cuttings on the compost heap or the dog will eat them from there. What should I do if my dog is affected Seek veterinary treatment immediately. Intravenous fluids and medication to control seizures may be required. Don't delay treatment. 10
