4 Command Discrimination Performance & Judging by Diane Schultz Commands and Signals - Each exercise description tells the judge and exhibitor if a command or signal, or command and signal are allowed. When the Regulations mention a command or signal, only a single command or signal may be given. (Chapter 2, Section 20) The following is a summary to help both judges and exhibitors avoid errors and penalties. HANDLER - To avoid deductions when using a Signal: If using a signal, with or without a command, the following applies to all exercises: Signal is a single gesture with one arm and hand only The arm and hand must be immediately returned to a natural position Handler may bend their body and knees to bring their hand level with the dog s eye when giving a signal to a dog in heel position Signals must be inaudible The handler must not touch the dog Any unusual noise may be considered a signal Any unusual motion may be considered a signal Position of arms and hands and movements of the head and/or body that aid the dog will be considered additional signals Handler may not signal a correction Don t delay in following a judge s order HANDLER To avoid deductions when using a Command: Use a normal tone of voice Don t delay in following a judge s order HANDLER To avoid deductions when using both a command and signal: The command and signal must be given simultaneously, which means, at the same time"; if there is space between the two, that is not simultaneously HANDLER To avoid deductions when using the dog s name: Use name once immediately before a command or command and/or signal, which means without time or space between the name and the command Do not use the dog s name when using only a signal DOG To avoid deductions: Dog must wait; no anticipation Dog must respond promptly Continued next page 4

5 Command Discrimination Performance & Judging continued Dog s Names and Commands Judges are not required to know the dog s name, or the commands each exhibitor will use. According to the Regulations, a judge determines if a dog responds to its name, anticipates a command/signal or if additional commands/ signals are being used based on time and space between words or words and signals. Exhibitors must remember the importance of time and space when choosing verbal commands. When words are all lumped together, StandBackStand, there is no time or space between words. When words have time and space between them, Stan Back Stand, the use of the dog s name and the commands are not in accordance to the Regulations as outlined above, and will be penalized. How many words can an exhibitor use? The Regulations don t specify the number of words that constitute a single command. The judge must determine when commands become excessive and worthy of a deduction. Diane Schultz, AKC Obedience Representative ********************************************************************************************** If I did not have dogs: I could walk around the yard barefoot in safety. I could sit on the couch the way I wanted, without taking into consideration how much space my dog would need to get comfortable. I would not have strange presents under my Christmas tree - like dog bones, stuffed animals or have to answer to people why I wrap them. I would not be on a first-name basis with 3 vets. My pockets would not contain things like poop bags, dog treats, and an extra leash. I would not have as many leaves inside as outside. I would not have to answer the question Why do I have a dog? from people who will never have the joy in their life of knowing they are loved unconditionally by something as close to an angel as they will ever get. How empty my life would be. 5

10 Thank You! A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our three-day (March 29-31) National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) trial a success. NACSW trials are always held in a location at which the dogs competing have not had prior experience or training, thus the dogs, like detection dogs, are searching at a novel location. Thanks to all our volunteers who came to help at our wonderful site, Tanah Keeta Boy Scout Reservation in Tequesta. Volunteers wore many hats during the trial, jumping in to do whatever was needed at the time and contributing in more ways than I can possibly acknowledge in detail. Thanks to Diana Johnson-Ford, Lisa Brooks and Lauren Walsh for finding the site and providing the pictures, videos and documentation needed to have it approved by NACSW and then plan out the flows for each of the days. And finally, to mark out the flows with landscape flags the evening before each day of competition. Thank you to Fran Smith, Lauren Walsh and Jane Craig, for being our Volunteer Coordinators, a task made more difficult by the holiday weekend, having an off-site trial and the fact that for Nose Work, competitors cannot volunteer on a day they are trialing. Hosting a trial off-site means equipment needs to be transported to and from the site and then set-up in an unfamiliar place. Equipment seemed to arrive like magic and even more be carried to the correct location on site. Along with equipment needed for the trial, we also had snacks and water provided by Betty and Fran. Coolers were filled daily with ice and water and then placed in strategic locations for volunteer and competitor needs. A big thank you to each of you who made this happen. Another thanks to all who helped with bringing equipment back to our building. During the trial, competitors need to be directed from staging areas to search areas safely and efficiently. For volunteers that meant manning the staging areas in the heat of the day and providing a calming space for each team as it waited its turn. It meant helping competitors get from parked cars to the first staging area in a timely way. Within each search area, volunteers took on the roles of judge s steward, timer, videographer and for containers hot box and cold box handlers. Score runners picked up completed score sheets and full video cameras and ran them to the score room so that scores could be entered and videos downloaded for NACSW. We needed vehicles to be used in searches each day and that meant moving vehicles and helping folks get to and from the site while their vehicles remained on-site. Thanks too to Dog-In-White handlers, Lisa Brooks, Fran Smith and Peter Ensch. Thanks to Diana Johnson-Ford for finding and engaging our luncheon food truck. Thank you to each of the following club members who came and helped out in so many ways: Angel Andrews, Beth Adams, Carol Munn, Cindy Ponga, Cyndi Porter, Fran Smith, Jane Craig, Diana Johnson- Ford, Helen Pichette, Janet Moore, Jean Asaro, Joe Hamzy, Judy Norton, Laura Rubin, Lauren Walsh, Lindsey Smith, Lisa Brooks, Marie Forgach, Marti Hohmann, Scott Adams, Tricia Boychuk. Thank you to friends and family who responded to our calls for help: Annette Herveling, Bonnie Olie, Dave Debroisbrand, Debbie Bouldrin, Jane and Carl Hewitt, Jane Tutton, Kathy Kent, Katie Obringer, Kim Corey, Laurie Volpe, Marjorie Arnold, Nancy Locke, Sandy Lidberg, Sandy Walsh, Rachael Richard, Nancy Petrone and Tracy Kirkpatrick. We had two wonderful Judges, Dwight Veon and Robert (Jese) Ford from Melbourne, FL. We had an outstanding NACSW Certifying Official Sue Frisch from Scranton, PA. No trial will run without NACSW certified volunteer Score Room Leads and we had Steve Stirrat and Victoria Ford with the assistance of Cindy Ice. In addition, we had the help of NACSW Trial Coordinator, volunteer, Peter Ensch from Edgewater FL. Competitors will be able to enjoy post-trial memories as captured in photos and videos by our very able Lindsey and David Smith. Thanks also to Amanda, Mike and the Rangers staff at Tanah Keeta, property of the Boy Scouts of America who were gracious and accommodating hosts. Thank you to OTCPBC for your support of this new sport. Judy McPartland 10

11 RainbowBridge.com Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together... Author unknown... My family and I lost our dear 14 year old Labrador Retriever Elsie last week. She was the best of the best and helped me earn my training certifications 10 years ago. She will be forever missed by my family and Breeze. Elsie was older when I joined the club so she was not well know there, but she did have some influence. Susan Minix 11
