1 Lead Lines A Newsletter for Members August, 2016 IT S OK - HE S FRIENDLY - A LESSON IN DOG BODY LANGUAGE Breanne Long, AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB August 26, 2015 AKC Good Dog Helpline Trainer Breanne Long advises to not always believe owners who assure you their dog is friendly. Pay attention to what their dog s body language is telling you! It s OK He s Friendly! This has been said to me many times while walking my dogs in my neighborhood. It's usually said as a large dog, dragging its owner, comes rushing up to my dogs. The oncoming dog is laser-focused on my dogs, approaching on a straight path, and its tail is alert. Unfortunately, that statement has never made me feel better about the situation because that dog s body language is telling me he has anything but friendly intentions toward my dogs! Many people don't understand dog body language. They think their dog is rushing up to happily greet new friends, but that may not actually be what your dog is thinking. Watch dogs at a dog park and observe their body language as they approach each other. When dogs approach each other in a friendly manner they take a curved path; they do not approach straight on. In dog-world, direct eye contact is rude and can be seen as a challenge; friendly dogs approach without directly staring at each other. Friendly dogs approaching each other are often described as wiggly because they wag their tails, curve their bodies, and don't maintain eye contact. A dog approaching in this manner is likely not a threat to you or your dog. If you're comfortable with it, allow your dog to greet such a dog. But as with any interaction with a new dog, watch carefully and be ready to walk away if either dog goes still or gives a hard stare as these can be signs of trouble. If you are approached by a dog that is clearly not friendly, don't hesitate to tell the owner you'd rather it not "say hello" to your dog. You don't have to give any reason but if you feel a need to justify yourself give the excuse of your dog recovering from surgery or illness, is not friendly himself, or is in training. If this isn't enough to dissuade the other dog owner, you can also (if it is safe to do so) step between your dog and the approaching dog. Coupled with your explanation, this will often convince the approaching dog owner that your dog needs some space. Next time you are on the receiving end of "it's okay, he's friendly!" watch the approaching dog carefully to determine whether or not he seems to really have good intentions. 1

3 As a long time dog owner, I am alarmed by the ever increasing legislation that impacts where I can take and enjoy my dog. These legislations even extend to what type of dog I am allowed to have and if my homeowner s insurance policy will insure me if I have a breed of dog they deem inappropriate. As a board member of the Australian Terrier Club of America (ATCA), I read with interest an article our AKC Delegate included in his monthly report about the steps AKC was taking to combat certain restricting dog legislation. The below article if from the AKC website. This is a For Your Information article only and in no way reflects the opinions of The Obedience Training Club of Palm Beach County or its officers. Celeste Platte, OTC Gold Member INVEST IN PROTECTING PUREBRED DOGS WITH AKC S CANINE LEG- ISLATIVE SUPPORT FUND In vesting for the future is the best way t o protect against unknown risks that lie ahead. When it come s to you and your club s charitable spending, few invest ments match the value of the Cani ne Legislative Support Fund. Donations to the AKC Canine Le gislative Support Fund (CLSF) help furnish additional resources that include: For mal representation (lobbying) in Co n gress and ke y statehouses. Educational programs for legislators and the public about responsible and fair policies for dog breeding and ownership. Grassroots advocacy training for clubs and federations. With political changes likely c o ming across the country next year, now is the best time to invest in a solid defense against ani mal extremism that threatens the future of our dogs. 4 Below is a new post for AKC Obedience and Rally Judges. As we have a number of OTCPBC members moving into training for Utility, I think this article is a timely reminder of what we can use for articles. Also, as of December 2015 AKC is now allowing wooden articles again. Remember, your articles do not need to look like our dumbbells. You can be creative as long a you meet the criteria. Editor Articles By Pamela Manaton Articles may be of any shape and size as long as the size is proportionate to the size of the dog. The articles may be items of everyday use. The metal set must be made entirely of rigid metal. The leather set must be made of leather. The wood set must be made of one or more solid pieces of wood. Wooden Articles The wooden set of articles must be made of one or more solid pieces of wood. The articles may be unfinished, stained or dyed. Must be designed so that only a minimum amount of fastening material is visible. The articles will be legibly numbered with a different number. Must be approved by the judge. Identification Articles and the article carrying case must comply with the Regulations Chapter 1, Section 10, Identification. No visible means of identification (badges, ribbons, club jackets, etc.) may be worn or displayed by anyone exhibiting a dog in the ring. If a dog's or handler's name is VISIBLE (or other means of identifying who was going into the ring), the Judge must not allow the case in the ring. The key word is "visible." Nametags on a case where the name is NOT visible are acceptable. A non-identifying picture on articles is allowed, as long as it does not identify who is in the ring. Summary Any color or any shape is fine for articles. Articles may be finished with dye, stain, polyurethane, shellac, or varnish. Articles may be completely unfinished. Paint is not allowed on articles. 4 Continued on next page

5 Thank You I'd like to thank EVERYONE involved for making our Agility trials in Arcadia last week such a success! A special thanks to my course-builders Barbara Bounds OTC & Peter Liu MOC - Volunteer Coordinators: Tracy Hanna MOC & Carol Perrella CDAC as well as Chris Villano, Bob Gale, Marval Miller, Sandy Shaffer and all of the other CDAC club members who pitched in & helped out. I'm also proud my of Trial Committee: Spencer Botkin, Diana Johnson-Ford, John Gorbas, Barbara Bounds & Jeff Gansky for all of their hard work as well. It goes without saying that our judges Cindy Deak, Bob Jeffers & Sheyla Guitierrez were outstanding as usual. There were a LOT of ribbons handed out including quite a few to our club members! I'm sure you'll hear about them all in the next "Lead Lines". A big thanks to Lori Patterson our Trial Secretary & her helpers Victoria Mac Vicar (Thursday/Friday) & Sheyla Guitierrez (Saturday/Sunday) who promptly posted all of the scores at this very busy trial. Barbara Bounds took the time out of her busy schedule collecting money for estimating your dog's time in the Exc/Master's classes on Saturday. The proceeds of $ is being donated to the "Canine Cancer Foundation". This is the same organization we supported last month with "Bark & Bowl". As usual it was MY pleasure to work with each & every one of you! As the old saying goes, "it takes a village". The "village" came thru once again! Betty Gansky Trial Chair/President OTCPBC ************************************************************************************** A True Story Some years ago, while doing Open sits and down, a fellow exhibitor relayed the following story: She was showing her Bearded Collie at an outside show. The group did sits and downs and all seemed to go well. When she returned each time, her dog was exactly where she had left him. However, as the judge was going down the line confirming each exhibitor s qualification after the exercises, he came to her and said he was sorry, she did not qualify. She was VERY surprised and asked why. It seems that as soon as she was out of sight for the long sit, the dog got up and walked over to the steward s table, went under it, and laid down in the shade. Just before the group was called back in, the dog got up and returned exactly to his place in his sitting position. The exact same thing happened with the down. Handler leaves, dog goes to shade, returns to location before handler returns. Don t you just love our four legged friends. Celeste Platte 5
