2 AZSAR K9CON PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS Wednesday - April 30, Workshops Local First Responder Disaster for Area and HRD with Bill Dotson Land HRD with Ben Alexander Wilderness Area with Brian Buff Tracking/Trailing with Randy Huckaby & Laura Denison Each K9 team, consisting of one handler and one K9, is limited to one workshop. The cost for the Pre-Conference Workshop is $175. Each Workshop includes breakfast, lunch and dinner with your instructor and your team members at which time handler goals and the setting of objectives for the workshop will be discussed. Prior to arrival, please consider the goals you would like to accomplish. Debriefing will also occur at dinner. Registration is first come - first served: Enrollment is limited to four K9 teams per Workshop. No K9s will be allowed inside the buildings. The field classes will be held in urban, rural and forested areas around Flagstaff and Parks, AZ. These situations are a part of search and rescue operations and the training for such operations. 6 K9 Rules for AZSAR K9CON 1. All participants with K9s must complete and sign this form to participate in the conference; this includes instructors who bring their K9s. 2. Only SAR K9s will be permitted to participate in AZSAR K9CON. The definition of a SAR K9 is a dog that is specifically trained or is in training to find lost, missing, deceased individuals/human remains. 3. Non-SAR dogs must remain secured during the event and leashed at all times if taken out of a vehicle for a break. 4. K9s must be obedient and under the handler s control at all times and are the sole responsibility of the handler. Do not ask someone else to watch your dog and leave. 5. Do not leave your K9 unattended unless properly crated or safe in your vehicle. 6. No K9s are allowed into the classroom buildings. 7. K9s must be on lead at all times except during field class requiring off lead work. 8. K9s will not be allowed in the buildings during meal times. 9. K9s must not show aggression to other K9s or people. Any K9 that bites or attempts to bite a human will be asked to leave immediately. If a serious problem develops with aggression that leads to disruption and is persistent, the K9 team will be asked to leave the event. This decision will be made by the Operations Chief and will be final, no appeals will be allowed. 10. Handlers must promptly clean up after their K9 partners. 11. Dogs on leash are to be kept at least 10 feet away from other dogs to avoid unnecessary conflicts. 12. Video recording and/or photographs may be allowed ONLY at faculty discretion. Title: Foundation for SAR K9s Thursday AM 4 hours Lead Instructor: Bill Dotson Assistant Instructors: Ben Alexander, Brian Buff, Laura Denison, Randy Huckaby Description: The definition of foundation training for all SAR disciplines will be discussed, including: (1) the development of puppies and young dogs, (2) developing a reward system, (3) basic obedience and (4) developing focus. Title: Beginning/Intermediate HRD Land fieldwork for K9 Teams Friday only 8 hours Instructor: Ben Alexander Assistant Instructor: Karen Paquette Description: Beginner and intermediate dogs will be introduced to novel HR odors. Focus will be on developing the reward system, focus and commitment to odor. Discussions of trained final responses and methods for sharpening the final response will be reviewed. Final response training will be conducted with appropriate dogs. Title: Wilderness Tracking/Trailing fieldwork for K9 Teams Friday only 8 hours Co-Instructors: Laura Denison and Randy Huckaby Description: Instruction will focus on trailing for wilderness search, search skills, scent discrimination, final response, and reward systems. K9 teams will be given individual instruction geared toward their needs and any issues they may be experiencing. 9 Description: All levels of K9 Teams are welcome. This class will concentrate on innovative methods to motivate your K9. These methods are designed to create a K9 partner that is more driven to source which will give the lost person the best chance of being located. Title: Advanced HRD Land fieldwork for K9 Teams Saturday only 8 hours Instructor: Ben Alexander Assistant Instructor: Karen Paquette Description: Dogs in advanced classes should be certified at least at a local level and have an independent final trained response at odor. Problems to challenge both the handler and the dog will be available to work. Focus will be on discrimination of target odor from distractions (human scent, animal decomp, food, etc.), working blinds, double blinds, and reading dogs in negative areas. Any necessary remedial training will be addressed at the end of the day with commitment to odor and final trained response motivation drills. Title: Urban Tracking/Trailing fieldwork for K9 Teams Saturday only 8 hours Co-Instructors: Laura Denison and Randy Huckaby Description: Trailing strategy techniques will be discussed and K9 teams will be given opportunities to apply this knowledge in urban settings. Instruction will focus on basic trailing for urban search, search skills, scent discrimination, final response, and reward systems. K9 teams will be given individual instruction geared toward their needs and any issues they may be experiencing. Title: K9 WFR: Hands-on Field First Aid for K9s Sunday only 4 hours Instructor: Leo Egar, VMD Description: This class is formatted with the SAR handler in the K9 wilderness first responder role. Plan on plenty of "hands on your dog" time and learn the basic techniques that could save your search dog's life. From a basic physical exam, to stopping bleeding, to treating those cut pads, we will try to cover it all in 4 hours. The skills covered will be practiced with your work partner as your patient, utilizing the proper medical supplies (provided) so that you can get the most out of the class and hone your K9 WFR skills Title: Snake Proofing for your K9 Sunday only Snake Handler: Jay Amos Approx. Length: 15 minutes per K9 Description: If you participate in this class you will be required to pay a $40 fee directly to the snake handler. This exercise will be accomplished by an experienced snake handler who will expose your leashed K9 to a live de-fanged rattlesnake under controlled conditions. It will involve use of an e-collar to proof your K9 against approaching rattlesnakes in the field. He will then allow the K9 handler to approach the snake with their leashed K9 a second time and deploy the e-collar again if necessary. He uses the absolute least amount of stimulation necessary to change your K9 s behavior. There will be an sign-up sheet where K9s will be assigned a specific 15 minute time slot from Sunday. 9/16

10 Instructor Biographies Ben Alexander currently serves as a member of the NASAR K9 Committee and the subcommittee chair for credentialing criteria. He is a NASAR SARTECH II Evaluator, a K9 HRD SARTECH and Area Search III Lead Evaluator, Area II Evaluator and certified as a SARTECH II, K9 SARTECH II Wilderness Area, K9 SARTECH HRD Land and K9 SARTECH Disaster HRD. Ben has also certified dogs with NAPWDA, NNDDA, and TASK. Ben is currently a PhD candidate in the department of Soil Science at Texas A&M University studying the post burial interval, grave soil, and interactions with HRD dogs and the environment. Ben s Master Thesis research was on search dog performance factors. Ben began training search dogs in Sept. 2000, and currently fields one certified operational dog and has two dogs in training. He trained his first dog at the age of 8 for obedience with the local kennel club and has never stopped. Ben has served as an instructor for area search, HRD land and HRD water at several seminars, including the NASAR national pre-conference workshop in Tunica MS He organized and was an assistant instructor at the first Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State (FACTS) March 2013 and now serves as the K9 training coordinator. He has presented several classroom workshops at NASAR national conferences and at FACTS on HRD dogs, mission strategies, and training and selection of search dogs (2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013). Ben is also employed with Dogs for Conservation as a trainer, assisting with the training of detector dogs for locating endangered species of both plants and animals. Bill Dotson has been training dogs for 42 years and training, deploying and instructing SAR Dogs for 36 of those years. Bill was a founding member, operations leader, operational K9 handler and training director for California Rescue Dog Association. Bill and his dog qualified in the Swiss Disaster Dog Association as an operational team - a coveted K-Team. Bill was an operational member and Search manager for numerous homicide searches of Dog s East, Inc. He was a founder, operational leader and trainer for the international disaster response of the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance Agency for International Development. He responded to international disaster missions in Armenia, El Salvador and the Philippines as the team leader and dog handler. Bill was a member of VATF2 FEMA from 1992 to 2007 and served as training director and dog handler. He helped to develop the FEMA standards for K9 s. He responded to the Murrah Federal Building bombing and numerous hurricanes including Katrina. Bill has presented many seminars on 4 continents, including selecting and developing dogs for training with a USAR team in Izmir, Turkey. He is an experienced breeder and trainer of Malinois and Dutch Shepherds. As founder and President of Search Dog Organization of North America (SDONA - Bill brought international training and testing to North America. Bill is one of the most respected trainers in the United States today. Brian Buff has over 20 years of volunteer search and rescue experience, working initially on grid teams and then later with K9s. He has 24 years with local fire department and has 12 years of experience as EMS/Medic and was also a certified Field Instructor. Currently, he is the Search Coordinator for Cayuga County Highland SAR and an evaluator for the New York SAR Federation. He has a number of documented finds to his credit in New York State with his dog Keena and now with Banshee (German Shepherds), and is currently training Bella, a Dutch Shepherd for area work. 10/16

11 Cindy McArthur, a professional dog trainer since 1977, holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Arizona. She began her SAR career in 2000 as a dog handler with the Yavapai County Sheriff s Response Team Search Dog Unit, where she held the offices of Canine Evaluator, Training Coordinator and eventually Strike Team Leader. In 2005 her two eldest dogs, Nitro and Levi, jointly received the Association of Pet Dog Trainers' SAR Dog of the Year award. Since 2006 she has been a certified Wilderness First Responder, and in 2007 she was inducted into the Yavapai County Sheriff s Search Management Unit. In 2008 she earned her NASAR SARTECH II certification and currently holds SARTECH II Evaluator status. In 2009 Cindy and her then youngest dog, Inspector Gadget, were the recipients of NASAR s Peter A. Chaney Canine Handler Scholarship. In late 2009 she moved to Flagstaff, AZ and joined the Coconino County Sheriff s SAR Canine Unit. She is currently their K9 Team Leader and K9 Evaluator. In 2011 she also became a member of the K-9 Search & Rescue, Inc in Dolores, Colorado and their AZ Division Supervisor. In 2012 she was awarded Member of the Year by Coconino County Sheriff s SAR. Her dog Nitro was posthumously awarded the NASAR 2012 K9 of the Year. She currently owns and handles four Golden Retrievers; three of which are Area/Human Remains Detection dogs and one is HRD only. Her K9s collectively hold (15) NASAR Canine SARTECH Area and HRD certifications. Cindy is a NASAR Canine SARTECH Lead Evaluator for Area and HRD Land and an AKC CGC Evaluator. Karen Paquette has been an educator for 16 years, working with students with exceptional needs and behavior disorders. Karen and her husband, Mark, returned to southern Arizona in 2003 and soon adopted Matilda from the Humane Society. It became instantly obvious that Matilda needed a job, and Karen joined Pima County s search dog team, Southwest Rescue Dogs, Inc. Matilda certified with SRDI in wilderness air scent in 2006, and went on to certify in Cadaver/HRD in 2007, water recovery in 2008 and evidence/articles in Karen achieved NASAR SARTech II in 2008, so that she and Matilda could achieve both NASAR HRD Land Type III (retested & achieved in 2013) and NASAR HRD Swift Water, Type I in Karen and Matilda decided to attempt IPWDA and achieved certification in advanced cadaver search and article search in March of To date, Karen and Matilda have participated in over 90 search missions, averaging at least one find each year. Karen and Matilda are credited with 9 finds to date, including body recoveries, a drowning victim, human remains, vehicles, and evidence. Laura Denison has been a dog handler/trainer since 1995; search and rescue and criminal cases; bloodhound (mantrailing), area search, human remains detection, water search, disaster; former president and team leader, All County K-9 Search Team of Iowa ( ); current team leader for Iowa K-9 Search Team; trainer, Midwest K-9 Detection and Consulting, Des Moines, Iowa; instructor and co-director, K-9 Alliance of Iowa; Certified K- 9 handler, Iowa Task Force 1, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; FEMA certified K-9 handler, Nebraska Task Force 1, Lincoln, NE; reserve police officer for the Des Moines, Iowa Police Department since 2000; evaluator for National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR); evaluator for Alliance for Emergency Response Instructors and Examiners (AERIE). Leo Egar, VMD graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002 and completed a small animal internship in Phoenix, AZ. In addition to helping reduce pet overpopulation through spay and neuter services, he also assists with investigations of animal cruelty. Before coming to the Arizona Humane Society in 2007, he worked in veterinary emergency medicine and with the Rural Area Veterinary Services program of the Humane Society of the United States to lead spay/neuter service trips to remote areas of the county. Dr. Egar has over 10 years of experience in human emergency 11/16

12 services His professional interests include emergency medicine, field immobilization, animal disaster medicine and wildlife rehabilitation. Dr. Egar has traveled to Native American reservations to provide free veterinary care to animals and participated in the veterinary medical response to major disasters including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. When not working in the shelter or with animal and wildlife rescue groups, Dr. Egar enjoys spending time in the Arizona desert with his German Shepherd, Zeiss and pursuing a variety of outdoor activities. Marsha Falco of Fountain Hills, AZ, started in SAR in 2005, and became mission qualified in Her first K9 Osita (Bouvier des Flounders) was certified in Air Scent and Cadaver. Her current K9 Blue (Border Collie) is certified in Air Scent and Cadaver. She is a member of both Maricopa K-9 in Arizona and Mountain Canine Corps in New Mexico. Peter Schaeffer of Phoenix, AZ, became involved with canine Search and Rescue in 2010 and became mission certified in He attended the Arizona SAR Conference 2012 in Heber, AZ. Currently, he is training Kaze, a Dutch Shepherd, in Air Scent and Human Remains Detection. He is a member of Maricopa K9. Randy Huckaby was a trailing dog handler for 10 years with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-involved in manhunts and search and rescue; former member of the narcotics, mantrailing bloodhounds and pack dog (fugitive recovery) programs for Region IV and the Garza Units; helped write the directive (and training manual) for the specific scent dog (bloodhound) program for the TDCJ; trailing instructor for K-9 Alliance of Iowa; instructed law enforcement and SAR personnel in Iowa, Arizona and Texas; served 4 years in the US Navy; attended and instructed at Pepperdine University in California. Willow S. Raven started in Search and Rescue in 2003 with a rescued black lab as a trailing dog. Now with a retired NASAR certified Canine SARTECH I Area Search Belgian Malinois, a NASAR certified Canine SARTECH HRD Land III Border Collie/Heeler mix and a Belgian Malinois in training as a trailing dog, Willow continues working towards her goal of achieving efficiency in SAR canine training techniques through canine body language and learning analysis. Willow is an active canine handler and ground team member of Pinal County Sheriff s Volunteer SAR Posse. 12/16
