Also, the BSRT has an active Facebook presence and a Petfinder site. contact: chairperson@bscarescue.com ((Karen Scott & Marion Lloyd) Telephone contact: Karen Scott Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. Official site of this organization, closely affiliated with but separate from the American Belgian Tervuren Club. Site provides info on adoptions, fostering, relinquishments and, like the other sites, lists of regularional coordinators for more personal contact. contact: rescueterv@belgiantervurenrescue.com (Terrie Janssen & Cindy Simonsen) Telephone contact: Cindy Simonsen American Belgian Malinois Club. Wonderfully diverse and interesting site with lots of graphics. The huge number of Malinois needing rescue has led to division of duties so there is a foster coordinator and transport coordinator in addition to the NAT L coordinators and regularional contacts. mhcil@aol.com (Marcia Tokson, in New York), coordinator for NE (but helps with entire US) Telephone number: (Marcia Tokson, home). ABMC also has contacts for fostering and transport. Please or call Marcia or myself (sandrastealey@windstream.net ) for info on contacts or assistance with Malinois needing rescued. There are also contacts for Malinois rescues in Canada listed on the ABMC site. American Belgian Laekenois Association (ABLA) The web site shows many pictures. Rescue contact: Lara Teresi rescue@belgianlaekenoisclub.us Please take time to read over these websites so that you are prepared when and if you see a BSD in need of rescue. There is a wealth of information about BSD s in general on them as well as a realistic picture of what is going on in rescue of our BSDs. GUIDELINES: 1. UBSDA rescue seeks to assist in rescue of purebred BSDs of all varieties. We cannot use the club's funds to help mixed breed dogs, although very often individuals within the clubs will go out of their way to network for such dogs or help privately. 2. UBSDA rescue can assist with paying pull fees and some transport costs if needed as dogs are moved from a pound/shelter. We cannot be responsible for dogs from known breeders except in very rare cases -- we do not do rehomes; again, however, many individuals may individually be willing to network for such dogs privately. 3. UBSDA rescue is unique in that we consider all varieties equally. Of course individual foster homes and volunteers may have variety preferences because of experience or contacts and these are respected. AKC Belgian rescue groups are very specific about which variety they can assist but they are also larger so are the organizations of final disposition in most cases. UBSDA does not officially foster or adopt dogs. 4. UBSDA's budget for rescue is extremely limited when considering our relative number of members and the fact that it must extend to cover all four varieties. Because of this we will work closely with other rescues to make the best use of our money and volunteers. Funds are available through private requests for special medical costs, pull fees and transport assistance. 5. The greatest need cited by all rescuers helping BSDs of all varieties now is for hands on assistance through transport, identification, short or long term fostering, referrals, education and networking. Please contact the appropriate variety contact for the dogs you will work with or contact me for more information on these or to be put to work. Volunteering to help does not obligate you to be "on call". The more volunteers who are available and trained and in contact with each other the more moral support we all will have and the more quickly we will be able to save dogs in need. 4

Show Secretary will be Becky Burgess and Show Chairman will be Jim Krapf. Cathi: Sounds good, I make the motion to approve this. Lisa: I second the motion. Cindy: The 4 Seasons meeting isn t until the 10th. I ll let you know any discussion we have. Lisa: I am curious, if 2 clubs (all 4 One and 4 Seasons) both offer to put on the regional at the Premier, how would that be handled? I wish we had that situation for the National. Cindy: I m guessing 4 seasons will defer to all four one because they have done it several times but I don t want to offer that without talking to the board. Sandy: Wow, that would be great! Think about having 2 regionals. That would be 3 shows and maybe draw a huge entry for all of us. Then the 3 shows from UKC and top 10. Cindy: It s not possible. All the regionals are on one day, Wednesday, of the premier. We can t start until 1:00. We would have to ask permission of UKC. If 4 seasons still wants to do it, I can contact UKC to ask the possibility. Cindy: I am contacting you as the secretary for Four Seasons. Four Seasons is willing to let All 4 One host the regional specialty at the Premier. The UKC events application was sent to Four Seasons so we will have to notify UKC if the change. Now for the big news, Fours Seasons has agreed to host the 2019 National Specialty and would like to host the Regional Specialty also. It is the intent of Four Seasons to hold the event in Michigan. Various sites are currently under review. Any discussion? Lisa: That is the best news!! Thank you to 4 Seasons for taking both the regional and national on. I am doing a happy dance!! Sandy: Your club is amazing! Sounds fantastic!!! Tracie: Sounds fantastic!! Michael: Awesome news! Ginnie: I will let All 4 One know they are hosting the Regional at the Premier Wende: WOW! That is really fantastic news!!! Vote to approve Regional hosted by All 4 One BSD Club at the Premier: Aye: LK, TM, MH, DP, CB, GP, SS, WSO Nay: None Abstain: None Did not vote: CF Approved. OLD BUSINESS: Membership Drive: Wende: I think that's an excellent idea Cindy!! Adjournment: November 20, 2018 MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER 2018 UBSDA ELECTRONIC BOARD MEETING Attendance: Cathi Blackburn, Cindy Fellows, Michael Herrin, Lisa Kingsley, Tracie Meyers, Daniel Pflaume, Ginnie Pflaume, Sandy Shaw, Wende Steffey-O Hara President Lisa Kingsley called the meeting to order on December 5, Lisa moved to approve the November minutes. Seconded by Cindy and Tracie. Approval of October minutes: Aye: LK, WSO, CB, CF, DP, SS, TM, MH, GP Nay: None Abstain: None Did not vote: None Approved. President s report: None Corresponding Secretary report: 39 members have sent in their dues renewals. I will send out reminder notices and include an announcement of the membership drive. Four judges have been nominated for the 2019 National Specialty. Does the board wish to include any additional candidates? Please provide complete information: Name, Address, Phone/ , Country licensed to judge, Speaks English?, Kennel name, Summary of Qualifications. Treasurer s report: None NEW BUSINESS: National Specialty judges: Sandy: It would be nice to have judges from other countries than France and England. (Yes, I know we had Rui last year.) Although most of the imports seem to be coming from there. Remind me, do any FCI BSD judges qualify? Is a list provided to the members of eligible judges like ABTC and BSCA do? It seems a few members get to choose the judges because, at least my opinion, most of the members don't know who to choose. Lisa: Tom Roozen just received FCI approval, he would be a good candidate Lisa supplied Tom Roozen information. Lisa: I thought Ten Cate had been voted on to judge? Not sure about spelling. Cindy: For what period, Lisa? Marion is for The proposed ballot is to keep us ahead of the game to select a judge for Lisa: I misread, thought the question was for Now it makes sense Tracie: I think Sandy is right, the members don t have a list of judges that meet the qualifications to judge, although I think Tom Roozen would be a good idea too. Also, that s a big job to create that list... Sandy: It might take some work the first time, but after that keeping it updated wouldn't be hard. I assume FCI has it, or at least one our friends who is an FCI judge could tell us how to get it. I think the pool is not that big, but is bigger than 2 countries. Cindy: I just want to point out that ABTC only uses AKC approved judges. The list is easily pulled down from their web site. We allow more that just FCI approved judges, they only have to be approved in their country. So you would have to go to each of the 51 country s kennel club web site which do not always offer an English option. And then would have to check each year for updates. And even then, people still wouldn t know the judges or whom to nominate. Cathi: I went to the FCI site and I can get to BSD but there are seemingly hundreds of names. OLD BUSINESS: None Adjournment: December 20, 2018 Respectfully submitted by Cathi Blackburn. 5

6 From the Chairperson A big thank you from the 2018 National Specialty Chairperson. It was quite a spectacular show, and the site was lovely. Not everything was perfect (it could have been a bit warmer and less windy, for example), but overall it was a great show. The thanks for our success goes to all the hard work by many club members, especially our secretary, Karen Simchak, and my very dedicated assistant, Randie Meyer, who took on many jobs and did them all spectacularly. I would like to thank our judges, Babs Robinson, Carol Ruthenberg and Lindsay Meyers, who all did a wonderful job of making the dogs feel comfortable being in the ring. I think our entry was a bit lower than normal due to the fact that we followed the big Belgian Celebration held earlier in the year (I know some people couldn t afford to do both), but the dogs who were shown were very lovely examples of our wonderful breed. The show merchandise was really high quality (you can still order it directly from the company, if you didn t get what you wanted), the trophies were spectacular and the raffle brought in a lot of money. Thank you again to everyone who worked so hard to make the show such a big success. Susan Bryant 6

7 Words from the Judge Firstly, may I say how much I enjoyed my time in Missouri. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone and feel honoured to have been invited to judge my passion in life, Belgian Shepherds! The weather was not too bad for humans and great for the dogs, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves! Mostly temperaments were fine, just a couple who were a little wary, but I was very pleased with type overall. There were a few imports and offspring from imports that bode well for the future of the BSD in the USA. My Champion class was a very difficult decision to make, with so many nice dogs. I thought my best overall is a lovely, typical female. Thank you to the committee and all who helped to make a very well-run show. Babs Robinson, Xanova Belgians 7

23 Within classes, critiques for dogs that receive placements are shown first, in order of placement as indicated in the judge's books. The remainder of dogs in a class are shown in the order of the judge's books (usually by armband number, but not always). Therefore, the printed order of critiques for dogs that do not place in the class has no bearing on the relative merits of the dogs. Note to judges, stewards, and show secretaries: Please give the original critique to the handler, and send the second page (first copy) of the critiques to the Critiques Editor, no matter whether the color of the copy is pink or yellow. The second copy goes to the judge. That will make it easier for us to reproduce the handwritten critiques accurately in the Beacon.
