HAPPY NEW YEAR 2007 The Year to Get Involved - A View from the Dog House - "Never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way." Author Unknown A View from the Dog House (contd) I have been thinking a lot about our group, Pap 911 Rescue, and how much we have grown in the past two and a half years. We have saved over 300 dogs and made a difference in the lives of that many people and more. Our determination to do what is right even if it is not popular has changed how people are seeing the plight of the breeding stock. We have encouraged the commercial breeders to rethink their methods of culling their unwanted breeding stock. Even more importantly, we have forced other breed groups to acknowledge the existence and the soul of the once forgotten butterfly in the puppy mill. We are a working group not a social chat group. It seems to me that we have struck about the right level on this now rescue group communication, updates and pictures of our Paps, vetting information, and some really fun Pap911 things that are shared with our members. The work we do is so stressful lives are at stake that comic break is really helpful. I would like to thank all of you that have contributed their time and effort. Now in 2007, I would like to invite each and every one of our group members to participate in the on-going effort to support Pap911. My ultimate goal is to have the majority of our members participate in their own special way. We have so much to do please consider what you personally might do to assist Pap911 by contributing some of your available time. We currently have over 130 members, but we have a limited number of volunteers that participate on a regular basis. Can you help? Why does a person join a rescue group? To help rescues! Quiet people come and sometimes go without providing their input. They may not participate because they are shy, or unfamiliar with rescue work, or are even waiting to be asked. We have members from 22 to 83 years of age, and
2 A View from the Dog House (contd) there is something for each person to do. We have many different fundraising ideas going on and we need people to help with each of them. These projects can be huge like our WebMuttster Online Dog Show that is going on right now. Or it can be as small as helping with our Pennies for Papillons Campaign. Someone is needed to urge members and friends to put their pennies, nickels and dimes in a jar for our Paps. Two or three s a month would work! An idea for a competition or finding a new location for Donation Jars would double and triple the income. WEBMUTTSTER DOG SHOW JANUARY 2007 We have computer lists that grow longer every week and we need someone to help keep these lists current. Every dog that has become a member of a new family should be checked on a few times during the year. Education and information dissemination is a primary function of this group and we need to reach out to our schools and youth groups about the care of animals. Letters need to be written to encourage interest in our plans. Sharing the facts about spay and neuter, dental care and proper vaccinations is a very important task and will help us get grants to accomplish even more. If you can t foster right now how about becoming a virtual foster for one of the dogs at the Dog House? Help by keeping your fosters bio and picture updated and think of ways you can help get he/she adopted. These are just a few of the ways each member of Papillon 911 Rescue and Adoption, Inc, can become involved. You joined knowing our mission to stop the grief and abuse inflicted on our best friends by the puppy millers. You do want to make a difference! Now is the time to reach out and offer your talent, your time, your heart another butterfly is waiting to come on home. From Dog House Central, I am excited about the New Year! Lyn McLaughlin, President Papillon 911 Rescue & Adoption Submitted by: Ande Tallarida Papillon 911 Rescue is hosting the second annual Webmuttster Dog Show. This event is taking place from January 1 through February 14, This event is open to all dogs that have been adopted or fostered by a rescue group, or adopted/ fostered from a shelter that also includes a stray dog that has become part of your family. Get those cameras ready and take pictures of your pooches. In 2006 Webmuttster was started as a fundraiser for Pap911, and to share some of the proceeds with other rescues/shelters. It was also a way to have a little fun. There is a $5.00 donation fee to enter. Four of the placing dogs will receive a portion of the proceeds for their shelter or rescue. There are prizes for the all the categories.

The prizes will be small items either for a dog or an owner. Each week the winner of the door prize will be posted on the prize page. Webmuttster is the only On-line Rescue Show, and is a way to learn about other rescues and their dogs - that information is invaluable. The more we know about each other, the more the animals benefit. This year we added additional categories and make improvements. Last year we had a great turn out and we are hoping for even more contestants this year. In rescue, we have to support each other and we are grateful to those that have supported Webmuttser. ww.pap911.rescuegroups.org VALENTINE S DAY GARDEN FLAG It is a two-sided garden sized flag, and the cost is $17.00 which includes shipping and handling. 4 A TRIBUTE TO JASMINE Submitted by Pam Spencer Jasmine, was a beautiful 5 year old Papillon that came to the Papillon 911 Rescue & Adoption group from a puppy mill. Normally, Papillons from puppy mills are very skittish and afraid and you must spend time with them to allow them to begin to trust and to love. However, Jasmine was very unusual in that she was almost asking for help and not afraid to be close to people. Jasmine was a tiny girl and we knew when she was rescued that Jasmine was well on her way to having puppies. This would be her last set of puppies and she was to live a life of freedom and happiness soon. Jasmine went to a foster home and her new foster parents very quickly fell in love with this wonderful little girl. She was always very sweet and loving. She would follow them all around the house and seemed to be saying that she was going to need help. Her new foster parents were so taken with this special girl that they decided that they wanted to adopt dear Jazzy and give her a forever home where her only concern would be who she should play with next. They watched her for weeks to make sure that she was comfortable, but there was concern for Jasmine due to her tiny size and it was apparent that she had previously had more than one C section. Tribute to Jasmine (contd) girl, came out just fine. At that moment the vet was aghast to realize that Jasmines internal organs were all fused together with scar tissue from many prior C sections. She could not believe the amount of scar tissue in this little girl. The adhesions were so bad that the organs were fused to major blood vessels and one of her blood vessels had burst. The vet tried very hard to fix the leaking vessel, but to no avail. Jasmine was bleeding to death right before our eyes. I sat there praying for Jasmine while I could hear her heart beat on the monitor grow weaker and weaker. Jasmine slowly passed away while her two puppies cried for her from the next room. We all cried for Jasmine. Jasmine should be nursing her last set of puppies right now. Jasmine should be playing with her adopted brothers and sisters. Jasmine should be lying on her new mommy s lap and thinking about what treats she might get later. Jasmine should be alive. Jasmine was only 5 years old. Instead, due to the horrors and greed of puppy mills, Jasmine s tiny body was operated on over and over again until her tiny body just gave out. This should have never happened. Jasmine s puppies will never know their momma. Jasmine was robbed of a life of happiness by greedy and people and the pet store industry. I would hope that everyone will use Jasmine s Story in their fight against puppy mills, irresponsible backyard breeders and the pet store industry to help end this horrible suffering. Jasmine's Fund Jasmine s Fund has been established to raise money so that these funds can be used to focus on the acquisition of puppy mill females that have had previous C-sections - like Jasmine - before it is too late to give them a wonderful life outside of the mills. Here are newborn pictures of Jasmine s puppies Snazzy & Jazzy. Please see subsequent pictures of them in the Incoming section. When Jasmine went into labor, it was very quickly realized that Jasmine would not be able to deliver these puppies on her own and she was taken to the vet. It was very quickly determined that Jasmine would need an emergency C section but the vet was sure there wouldn t be any problems, as a C section is a relatively common procedure. One of the puppies, the boy, was stuck in the birth canal and was blue. A vet tech worked on him and he was revived rather quickly. The other puppy, a
5 CHECK IT OUT, PET PARENTS: HOT TIPS FOR COLD WEATHER Winter may have made a late debut in many parts of the country, but it has certainly arrived in full force. With the thermometer dipping lower and lower, the ASPCA wants to remind you that your four-legged companions may also be feeling the chill. Here are some tips to keep them safe and sound until springtime: CANDLES FOR HOPE Please keep in mind that these candles will make wonderful presents throughout the year, for any occasion, for everyone on your shopping list. Your purchases will help our furbabies still living in the mills. - Be on the lookout for any antifreeze or engine coolant spills that might occur when preparing your car for winter. These products contain chemicals that are harmful to animals, says Dr. Steven Hansen, a veterinary toxicologist at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. It s important that you remember to store any potentially harmful chemicals in clearly marked, sealed containers in areas that are inaccessible to your pets. - Even if your pets are indoor/outdoor creatures, make sure their outdoor areas are well-sheltered from the cold and wind. If possible, keep animals inside, especially during cold spells and inclement weather. - Take care that your pet has plenty of water. Winter air can be very drying, leaving pets just as dehydrated as they are during the hot summer months, says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine at the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. - During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes crawl under the hoods of cars for warmth but a car s fan belt can kill or injure an animal when the motor starts. If there are outdoor or feral cats in your neighborhood, please bang on the hood of the car and wait a few seconds before turning on the engine. For a complete list of cold weather tips, visit ASPCA online. FUNDRAISING NEW$$$ Please remember to support our on-going fundraising efforts. To expedite the ordering process, your orders as you get them to Ande33@aol.com. Mail your checks and money orders to: Ande Tallarida-Davis, 205 Clarence St., Watkins Glen, NY CINDY S TREASURE CHEST Don t forget to visit Cindy s Treasure Chest and check out the Member Mall. ising/membermall.htm. These PAP911 members have handcrafted products, or other items to share. Sales from these member shops benefit the PAP911 dogs. Remember to enter Kay s 5 th of the Month Treasures. Tell your friends, family and other rescue groups. Kay makes wonderful handcrafted items for doggies each month to raise funds for Pap 911. My Trinket saw pictures of the January prize and really wanted it this girl has a shopping fetish. She is still yapping at me because she didn t win the beautiful doggy bed, blanket, and pillow. Kay suggested that I put parental controls on my computer so my little girl can t shop on-line and see Kay s treasures.
