Maria on the road on Lesvos with Stavros. Congratulations! In memory of. Shocked we took note of the sudden death of our volunteer Marion Allon. You could always call on Marion to help the Canilos "Rummage" Shop. She was also active in the search for and collect stuff for sale. Marion felt very involved with animal cruelty. We are very grateful for her commitment and we will miss her very much. The Board of Canilos and the volunteer team of the "Rummage" Shop wish her partner and family much strength when processing this great loss. 1

2 Sequel "attic sale" now called: CANILOS RUMMAGE SHOP. We have a wonderful busy time behind us: The Hubertus annual fair on November 9th, Sinterklaas and of course Christmas. We tastefully decorated the shop and the window of the shop for Christmas. The usual cozy atmosphere and on the last Sunday before Christmas we had a glass Glühwein (hot red wine) served to the customers which might have caused the sale of 36 boxes of Christmas articles from the 40 we had stacked in the shop. A great result. We already have 13 volunteers and we have been the coziest and most visited shop in Gulpen. There is no greater compliment! Quote from the letter from our President to the volunteers: "I know this has been possible only by your tremendous commitment and dedication. On behalf of the entire Board of Canilos I want to thank you for that. You are the best. This allows us to make it possible to continue our battle against the terrible living conditions of the barrel dogs. Many Lesvos dog tails are wagging of joy for your help!! As thanks for these efforts in the past year, we took the group to a (of course) Greek restaurant for dinner. I take the opportunity to send my best wishes for 2014 to the providers, the buyers and the volunteers and I hope that we may experience a lot of fun again this year in our Canilos Rummage Shop. 3 Our plans for was pretty successful for us but we still have a long way to go. In 2014 the registration must have been completed including the dogs that are chained in someone s backyard. s So the end of 2014, all barrel dogs are registered, owners must be addressed, unacceptable living conditions must be improved, and if not, it will become a legal case.. We want a structural approach to the prevention policy. It would be nice if we manage to get all barrel dogs chipped and at least 200 barrel dogs spayed (and therefore also chipped). Registration and rechecking barrel dogs locations will also be necessary in Finally, we continue the support of the education project (information on animal welfare in schools) in This year the higher classes of primary school and high school will be covered. Charity veggie dinner. Maria and Christel are organizing a veggie dinner with a Greeks touch on March 8 th. All the proceeds will be donated to Canilos Animal Foundation. We hope that a large group of people will come on and have dinner in Wassenaar. We are thinking about 40 to 50 people. We will also have a lottery with lovely prizes. 4 Maria on the road on Lesvos with Stavros. On January 17 th 2014 I had an appointment with Stavros, to go on the road in the region of Eresos, to check and register the barrel dogs that Anja, from EreSOS for Animals, had spotted earlier. Anja was also present. Stavros was supposed to meet us at 11 am, but he arrived 2 hours later. This was because while driving to Eresos he came across 2 barrel dogs and he wanted to handle directly. It was my first encounter with Stavros and I got a very good first impression. We first drove around the village of Skala Eressos. Fortunately, Stavros is an experienced driver and he knows the neighborhood well. He guided us through all kinds of dirty and bumpy roads and since there is no such thing as street names in this area, it is difficult to get around without a GPS system where the dogs are located. It was so very useful that both Stravros as well as Anja held a photo camera with GPS system. It wasn t always easy to find the dogs by car. Many dogs were almost invisible, behind pens or stables. They didn t respond barking as we drove by with our car but they did respond when we drove by very slowly, whistling and shouting. Stavros told us he took into account the most important aspects to judge if it is a serious or less serious case of animal abuse. 1) Is the dog chained? 2) Does the dog have a decent doghouse with good protection? 3) Does the dog have enough to eat and clean water? For me personally it was pretty hard to accept to see the dog suffering, him or her looking miserable en scared, but with a good shelter, not extremely skinny and having some water on the spot. This is according to the new Greek law, labeled as sufficient whereby the owners cannot be sued for animal abuse. So for now we need to deal with this and accept it and focus on all the serious cases... Dilemmas! 4

5 On several spots it was clear that these dogs were not treated the way they should be. No water, no shelter, and a short chain. So sad! Ana brought plenty of food and water for these dogs. The sheep and chickens have even better conditions than the barrel dogs! When the owner of the dog was nearby, Stavros gave him a warning. The people responded generally quiet, and promised to build better facilities for the dog. But whether they will live up to it... Stavros made them clear that he s going back In a week or two to check whether the conditions have been improved. If not, they risk a fine of 300,00. On some spots, where the owner is unknown, or doesn t live nearby, Stavros hung a letter with instructions how to better take care of the dog. There will also come an inspection after 14 days. It was striking to see how happy the dogs were to see us, longing for some attention. Most dogs were very friendly, but a few were very afraid. These poor dogs are living there day in and day out, being lonely and yearning for some attention. It was very painful to see! Even more so because we had to go after a while and leaving the dogs to the hands of fate. At least that s how it feels to me.
