TEVRA TIMES November 2015 FROM THE BOSS Just like all of you I cannot believe it is that time of the year again but alas it is!!! Once again so many events have occurred it is hard to know where to start. Early September saw the arrival of Kim and Cy from Australia on their 3 yearly visit. I am sure that all of you will have met them during their stay here. Life was full on during their stay with shows every weekend (except for one) with travels to Dunedin, Nelson and Wellington. While here not only did Cy win both of his Novices he was also placed at every event he entered apart from the last day when he was starting to get a bit tired!! The greatest thrill for many of us was when they were in a run off for first place at the Nationals finishing in second place. After eight and a half weeks here they left last Friday and it is quite strange without them here. One area we did manage to educate Kim (well thought we had anyway) was the game of rugby. All going well and we thought that she finally had the gist of it all until she asked us one day what is a white crocket in rugby!!! (For those non-rugby people white crocket is actually Wyatt Crockett an All Black player from Woodend!!). Kim made many new friends while over here and hopefully will catch up with them again in three years when they both return. Last weekend saw the NDOA here in Christchurch and many of us were very involved in the running of it. These events are very social as well as being very tiring. A number of Tevra people did really well this year in the individual tests and we were also well represented in the Southern Region Team with Sue Boag with Jinty and Steve Kenmare with Dexter representing Novice, Alastair Kirk with Twister in Test A, Roxanne Ramsay with Baillie and Anne Morgan with Jack in Test B and Jean Pierre Derveaux and Deeva representing Test C, and Ann Readman in Rally Novice. A very good number when you consider of the 11 representatives 7 were from Tevra Dog Training. As this is the last newsletter for the year I would really like to thank all of you from every area of dog training for being so supportive this year and for believing in Tevra Dog Training. If we can all achieve a balance between training and having fun with our dogs then that is all we can ask. The numbers have grown so fast that sometimes it is hard to believe how strong we have become. At the last count we have around 100 handlers involved in our classes. Thank you also to all of you who have helped with not only the training but the entertainment side of Tevra.
Could you please return or advise me of any trophies you have on your shelves, or books, CDs, halters or training gear that you may have on loan. Please do have a great Christmas and New Year and hopefully we will see you all back refreshed and ready to go. Janice Kirk IMPORTANT NOTICE Any videos taken during training sessions at Tevra are not permitted to be loaded onto any social media (including YouTube) without my express permission. Janice Kirk CANCELLATIONS Please please please check your s regularly for any cancellations. Don t just assume that training will be on. I need to make the call first thing in the morning and sometimes the weather does clear but by then it is too late to change so for the sake of checking it may save you a wasted trip. The weather pattern at Ouruhia Domain is often quite different to both Christchurch and North Canterbury so please don t assume that because it is raining in your part of town that it is also raining at Ouruhia. Also can you please ensure that you have given me the address you can and do access in the weekends? Can you please acknowledge that you have received the notification? Gail will contact the Rally people by text please be sure to acknowledge her text. Janice ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DIRECT CREDIT PAYMENTS: It would be very much appreciated if you could please note the two bank account details: Tevra Agility, Advanced Canine Certificate All other payments including purchases; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
COMPETITIVE TRAINING INFORMATION: Again this year we have seen several dogs move up the grades which really is what competing is all about. With a few more shows to go I am sure there will be more of you as well. Our Wednesday group continues to be more of a social occasion at times rather than serious training. We have visited a number of venues over the past few months which proved worthwhile. We also know where all the toilets are at these venues now!!! Our Saturday morning group sessions are also very popular with a large variety of dogs from different levels. Wednesday training will finish on 25 th November and recommence on 20 th January with our end of year luncheon being on 3 rd December at a venue to be announced. Saturday morning group training will cease on 21 st November and restart on 23 rd January. During the break I will be training from home especially as a number of you are looking forward to getting your puppies. With the kennels full and two litters of puppies around we will not be going away so just let me know if you want a time. Janice ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AGILITY CLASS REPORT We will be back on board with agility next year starting the first week in February. If you are interested me at barlin@clear.net.nz Dogs must be under control. Depending on numbers interested we will have a pre agility class and a class for those who have a bit of experience. Dogs less than 12 months old cannot jump but we work around that by them going through the jumps instead of over 12 month old have low jumps and only when they are 18 months can they use the full hurdles. Dogs love it and it gives you the experience of trying out another dog sport before deciding if it suits you. Think about it and let me know. Colin CERTIFICATE CLASS It is nearly the end of the year already, we will only be having 2 more classes and they will be the 7th and 21 st of November. Our Break up will be the 5th of December.
The wonderful owners who have graduated the class will be presented with their certificates at the Break up. They are Philippa and Scoot, Arran and Mandy and John and Nigel. Unfortunately Lauren who has only 2 exercises to go has been sick and probably won't be able to finish this year. You have been a great class to teach guys. I hope those who can will go on with a dog sport, I know two of you are going on to join an agility club and one is going on to have a human puppy. :-) For the remainder of you keep up the practice and it will not take long for you to catch up. We will be starting the new year on the 23rd of January. Remember there are other things you can do with Tevra, once your dog is under control, there is a New Zealand Kennel Club Certificate you can gain, which is called Canine Good Citizen (CGC), anyone who has passed our class will find it very easy. Rally-O which you get a module of in our class and of course Agility. Barbara RALLY O A big thank you to Gill, Gretchen, Jo S, Nicky, Lorraine, Anna and Mel for your help at the National Dog Obedience Assembly. I had a lot of comments on how good it was to have you all there!! I m sure you now realise that the Rally competition world is not that scary!! And that even your instructors can have an off time but still enjoy themselves!! While we re on the NDOA, most of the Tevra people did very well, especially Mel and Marnie who gained three 1 st and one 3 rd!!! The other competitors were from all over New Zealand, and the standard was high so they should be very proud of themselves. Anne Readman and Mac were the Southern Region Team Novice dog in the Regional competitions, and had a beautiful round. Unfortunately one of the signs, while she and Mac performed it beautifully - was incorrectly done!! They had the nerve-wracking task of being the first dog on in the whole competition and probably close to 100 people watching!! Despite that, their performance was a credit to Tevra!!! Congratulations to Vickie who recently gave birth to Eloise a few weeks ago. Tui, mother and baby are doing well!! It s been great working with you all this year. Next year we will be adding the Dog Games programme for those who want to do it. Training for the rest of the year: 14 th /21 st November Training as normal
28 November No Training 5 th December Training at my place in Sefton 6 th December Break up at Ouruhia Have a great and safe Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all next year when we restart on 23 rd January Gail ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (CGC) We have had some excellent results in this class with the following passing their assessments in early October. Foundation: Anne and Watson, Jan and Astro, Louise and Jenny, Judith and Arthur, Kerry and Olive. Bronze: Louise and Jenny, Judith and Arthur, Kerry and Olive
Gold: Anne and Sam, Pam and Sally Our Thursday morning group which has up to 10 dogs and their handlers is quite unusual as there are no two dogs of the same breed, apart from two from the same family, so it goes to show that dogs of all breeds are able to become a CGC dog. We have a small dedicated group training on a Saturday morning in preparation for the next assessments. Steve is doing a great job with this group and we look forward to seeing them achieve this title. There will be no training on 5 th December (Saturday) but our Breakup will be Sunday 6 th December and training recommence on the 23 rd January. More information on the break up to follow. Thursday training will cease on 3 rd December with a morning tea at the Groynes Dog Park starting at am. More information nearer the time. This class will recommence on the 14 th January. We are hoping to organise an assessment for Foundation and Bronze at the end of January but will confirm this when I have spoken to the assessor. Further dates are mid-may and early October next year. Many thanks for your support this year. You have all made so many improvements it is just great to see. Janice PET DOG MANNERS CLASSES Although I did say it in my last newsletter I am going to say it again. These classes have continued to expand this year with 6 classes working towards creating a greater bond between both their dog and themselves through teaching games and tricks as well as basic obedience. It is just so satisfying watching these dogs and handlers develop each time we see them into a bonded unit. Many of you have been working on teaching your dogs to sit in their own camp chair so this year when you are sitting around talking and Molly just chillin'!!
enjoying the festive season and your dog is able to sit amongst you in its own chair please think about how far you have all come. For some of you it is time to move on into one of the following: Canine Good Citizens, Companion Certificate, Agility or Rally O. If you wish to clarify any of these dog sports please feel free to talk to me about it. I will be contacting you early in mid-december to see what your intentions are for next year s groups. If you could please respond to the so that I am able to plan the classes in advance. Training for this group will finish on the weekend of the 5/6 th December and recommence 23/24 th January. Training dates until then are: November 7/8 th, 21/22 nd and then our breakup on Sunday 6 th December. There will be more details on this sent out nearer the time but just so that you can plan you weekend it usually consists of games etc from am followed by a shared morning tea. THANK YOU: Many thanks to all of you who helped by either supplying the material or making the tuggy toys Tevra donated to the Region for the good bags given out at the NDOA. All in all 200 were made. Thank you all so much. TEVRA BREAK UP FOR ALL CLASSES (SUNDAY AS WELL!!) Sunday 6 th December at Ouruhia Domain. Starting promptly at 10.00am the games will finish around Following on from previous years which have been so successful we will be holding a games morning for dogs and handlers of all ages and levels. This will be followed by a shared morning tea along with our awards. All members of the Tevra group and their families are welcome to come along. There will be a notice coming out in the next couple of weeks so please mark this in your calendar.
TEVRA BOARDING/DAY CARE KENNELS We have now finished the main extensions to our kennels (though I m sure more will appear from time to time!!). We are keeping the number of dogs limited, with a preference towards dogs that are trained in the Tevra system and are therefore socially well behaved dogs able to play together in the paddock when not resting in their kennels. We have five fully fenced areas, plus the tennis court for them to run in, all with shaded areas for those hot (or wet!!) days. Most of you will have seen them but those who haven t are welcome to come and view by appointment. The shed on the left has two large size kennel and runs, the one on the right has 3 medium size. K9 NATURAL DOG FOOD. Now available from Tevra Dog Training in frozen or rehydratable as well as a full range of treats. So that we are able to offer a competitive price we do not carry a large stock instead we order in as required with some of the slower selling items so if you do require any bags of K9 Natural please give us a few days warning. 9 AN AUSSIES ADVENTURES IN NZ KIM LYNDSAY, CY AND REBEL In November 2002 I attended a seminar in Sydney run by Janice Kirk from New Zealand. She showed a video of some of her dogs and I fell in love with Hocus Pocus, her husband Alastair s Siberian Husky/Border Collie Cross, and the way he worked. I thought to myself I would love to have a dog just like that and be able to work him the same. I talked to Janice about getting one of her dogs, and I think she thought I was just time wasting. However, after constant phone calls to her and telling her I would come to New Zealand and start my puppy with her she finally realised I was serious. So the money saving started!! On Thursday 21 April 2005 about 9.30pm Australia time, a litter of puppies was born in New Zealand, and Janice called to let me know. I was at Agility at the time and was over the moon to get the message I found on my phone when I got home not much sleep that night!!! At the end of June one very excited Aussie made the trip to New Zealand to meet the beautiful puppy I named Rebel. I stayed with Janice for four weeks getting to know my boy, and learning how to work with him. Right from the start we had a strong bond and he was keen to learn so much as was I!!! At this time I registered Rebel with the New Zealand Kennel Club (NZKC] and also became a member myself. Rebel While I was with Janice, I made many new friends who encouraged me along the way. I told Janice and Alastair I would be back in three years time for more training, and may even compete if I was good enough. After staying with Janice and Alastair, and all the phone calls across the Tasman, we became very good friends. Janice even came to visit us for Rebel s first birthday (I think she also wanted to check I was doing everything right!!). In 2008 Janice sent her dog Aust and NZ Obedience Champion Karuz n Like A Bullet CDX (Bullet) to live with me and compete in Obedience. After introducing Bullet to Aussie Rules he successfully worked his way through the ranks and gained his Australian Champion Obedience title in As far as we know he is the first dog to gain a Champion Obedience title in both countries. Once Rally O became established in Australia, Bullet and Rebel were the first dogs in Rally-O New South Wales to get full points (100/100). This happened on the same day at the same show. Bullet passed away peacefully in October 2014 surrounded by his Aussie family. In April 2008 Rebel and I came back to New Zealand. Janice thought we should try out for the Obedience Special Beginners team dog for the National Dog Obedience Assembly. We not only placed in the individual tests we also came 3 rd in the teams event. Rebel also gained his CDX title at this show. During this time I was also lucky enough to be able to compete in the National Dog Show and, along with Janice and Alastair, made up the winning team for the Club Team Trophy. Over this time Rebel and I [won out of Special Beginners. On our return to Australia we started to compete and soon we were in the Open class. Obedience in Australia is very different to in New Zealand but Rebel soon adapted.
After another three years of scrimping and saving, and many more trans-tassie phone calls, Rebel and I returned to New Zealand and successfully competed in Novice at the National Dog Show. At this time we did not have Rally-O in Australia but thanks to Gail Hamling in New Zealand who trained me by correspondence and more trans-tasman phone calls, I was also able to compete in Novice B at this National with Rebel placing 2 nd. Thank you, Gail, for your time and patience. This was Rebel s last holiday in New Zealand where he managed to experience his first earthquakes while staying in Christchurch. I returned to Christchurch later that year in October to compete at the NDOA with Alastair s other dog Streak where we achieved CDX as well as placings in Rally O gaining his Rally Novice title. It has been confirmed that Rebel is the only dog to obtain Rally titles in both Australia and New Zealand. Upon our return to Australia Rebel continued to compete and is now working towards his UD title and ultimately his Obedience Champion title. In November 2012 my next puppy Pinehills A Shot of Cyanide whom I called Cy, was born in Dunedin at Nicky Rutherford s Pinehills Kennels. I am very grateful to Nicky for keeping Cy for me and working with him in the important early days until I was able to come over and meet him. I came over in early After six weeks travelling overseas on a holiday with Alastair and Janice which included a trip to Crufts, I stayed with Nicky for a week while I got to know, not only my puppy, but also the training methods Nicky had used. This time was invaluable to both of us and really helped my foundation work. This was followed by correspondence training, (and yes - more trans-tassie phone calls). My friend Suzie Greentree in NSW was also very instrumental in my training. Thank you all you lovely ladies!! September 2015 saw me heading back to New Zealand with Cy to compete in Novice at several shows in Christchurch as well in Dunedin, Nelson and at the National Dog Show in Wellington. During this time we won our Novices as well as several other placings. My biggest thrill was being in a run-off for 1 st place in Novice at the Nationals ending up in second place out of 37 competitors. At the National Dog Obedience Assembly in Christchurch we were placed 5 th in Novice. While in New Zealand this time I competed in Rally with Janice s Shetland Sheepdog Ob Ch Thistledae I Be Bram Bezi CDXG] (Bramble) at several shows gaining his RN title. Bramble I am hugely grateful to Janice and Alastair for having me and Cy in their family for the last two months, taking us to all the shows and for their help and support over the past years, as well as allowing me to compete with Bramble in Rally-O. Thank you to North Canterbury Dog Training Club for making these two Aussies welcome as members of your Club. What wonderful people you all are!! I would also like to acknowledge the New Zealand Kennel Club for their support, and Eukanuba as I was lucky enough to win lots of your prizes!! Last but not least, thank you Peter Dunne (Director Secretary of NZKC) for your support and taking the time to talk with me about my adventures!!
