8 The May-flower (Förstamajblomman) Motto: A union of all who love to serve all who suffer. W. T. Sletd. The May-flower is a well-known name in the history of America. It was painted on the ship that brought the first Puritans fugitives for their religious faith and with them a strong element of moral health to the land of freedom. In our time a Swedish May-flower Förstamajblomman is bringing health and strength to our people, especially to the young ones among us. What is then Förstamajblomman? Litterally translated it signifies The-first-of-May- Flower and is a little artificial flower, each year varying in form or colour, sold at the price of about 3 cents, to help in the hard fight against the great white plague the tuberculosis. It was mrs Beda Hallberg, a guardian of the poor in Göteborg, Sweden, who, seven years ago, got the idea of selling a little flower for the benefit of tuberculous persons on the 1 :st of May, of old a sort of holiday, to celebrate the arrival of spring, so welcome in our country with its long and cold winter. The idea was met with joy and sympathy. Every

The little flower soon made its way into all parts of the country, and local committees were formed from north to south, numbering at present 433, all uni* ted into a national alliance Förstamajblommans Riksförbund with a centrabboard in Göteborg, and the Hon. Carl Lagerberg, Chamberlain to H. M. the King, as its president. For the past seven years, the May-flower has contributed about one million Swedish crowns to the campaign against the terrible enemy. The matter of hygienic education has been pushed by lectures, leaflets and and the press, so that every one nowadays is aware of the fact, that tuberculosis is infectious, is preventable and, if diagnosed in due time, curable. Perhaps the most important institutions of prevent tive work in this line are Dispensaries-Helping-stations and Homes for children of consumptive parents. Thus the sick little ones may be cured, and the children not yet infected may be spared. The pictures show something of what is being done in Sweden to protect children from the white plague by the help of the little May-flower. May its loving work spread far and wide!
