6 Make Handwashing a Habit Each year, the Global Handwashing Partnership chooses a theme to encourage celebrants and drive action. The 2016 theme: Encourages individuals to adopt handwashing habits and frames handwashing as a repeated behavior. Promotes an actionable approach. Represents a gateway to discussing what the water, sanitation, and hygiene sector knows about behavior change and how habits are formed. Relates to a number of contexts and can be highlighted to reflect the impact of handwashing on key areas, such as nutrition or education. Photo credit: Practical Action Children in Bangladesh learning about proper handwashing practices. If practice is upheld consistently and frequently, habits are more likely to form and behavior can become automatic.
7 Knowledge Management Communications & Outreach Mobilizing Action The GHP frequently used social media (Twitter, Facebook, Yammer) to share information and engage others by: Coordinating regular planning calls to catalyze action Conducting media outreach Cataloguing virtual events on the Global Handwashing Day website Drafting blogs promoting handwashing habit formation Maintaining a virtual map of events The GHP increased awareness and equipped campaign organizers by delivering actionable tools, including: An updated Planner s Guide, in both English and French, with essential handwashing facts, the latest evidence, and ideas for celebrations Global press release 2016 Social Media Toolkit with shareable visuals Educational habits fact sheet

20 Make Handwashing a Habit Beyond October 15 Habit formation cannot be achieved in just one day. Promoting handwashing with soap should be ongoing to foster progress in increasing the reach of handwashing programs, encouraging investment, and promoting behavior change. Here are just a few key examples of what you can do to encourage sustained habits: Practice makes perfect Be a hygiene hero Spread the word, not germs Learn more Share your story After Global Handwashing Day, you might be very aware of your hygiene practices. Be sure to maintain this behavior! Take action to make sure hygiene is included on the agenda by advocating for hygiene-friendly policies where you live or work. Tell others about the importance of handwashing by sharing what you ve learned. Forward GHP tools and fact sheets on to others. Learn about habits, behavior change, handwashing program implementation, and more at globalhandwashingday.org. Tell us how you celebrated by submitting your story at bitly.com/ghdupload.
21 Continuing the Momentum Here are a few simple ideas for how you can make handwashing a healthy behavior around the year. Examples of what you can do to catalyze change Join a Parent-Teacher Association WASH committee to educate children and advocate for handwashing stations with soap at your child s school. Ensure that all students have access to soap and water at toilets and advocate to government agencies to support WASH in schools. Work with local officials, non-governmental organizations, and religious groups to raise funds for handwashing stations in public places, such as schools or marketplaces. Integrate hygiene into other related projects, such as those pertaining to sanitation, child health, and nutrition. Advocate to government agencies to review and improve policies and national standards for WASH and support hygiene in the Sustainable Development Goals. Review and improve policies and budget for the WASH sector and increase funding for handwashing programs, especially for schools and health facilities. Ensure that your work or offices promote handwashing with soap and that handwashing stations with soap are available in the workplace. For more examples of the different ways to promote handwashing with soap, visit the Beyond Global Handwashing Day page of the GHP website.
