3 PRAIRIE GARDENERS OBSERVATIONS Dear Visitors Parkview Hills is a wonderful environment for a variety of insects, birds, animals and of course, our native plants. We have woods, water, plant life, and sunny areas. This environment allows the Prairie Gardeners not only to take joy and satisfaction in seeing the hardy native plants in the garden, but also the pleasure of visitors we spot in the garden. Because we are growing native plants they lure insects, birds, and animals to the garden. Of course we have deer and the bunnies - we don t see them often but we know when they have visited our garden. The monarch butterflies come to the milkweed for nectar and to lay eggs. The white cabbage butterfly is seen quite often. Honey bees, bumblebees and the tiny native bees buzz around the flowers all summer long. The robins come to seek out the bugs and worms hiding in the leaf mulch. The black and red milkweed beetles are abundant. These are usual garden visitors. But what about turtles? One of the gardeners was moving leaf mulch in early spring when she flinched and looked at her hands. She had been startled by the movement of a small quarter sized painted turtle that had been hiding in the leaves. In June, a large mother snapping turtle visited to lay her eggs. The common snapping turtle is the largest turtle in Michigan. This one looked like she had been working out with her thick neck and legs. We let her do her laying and after she left, we marked the spot so we would not disturb it with our gardening. The garden also hosts many types of dragonflies. Dragonflies need to be near water to lay their eggs. Sometimes they attach them to water plants. They eat many insects, including mosquitoes. Trying to identify dragonflies is very trying. They are skittish and attempting to sneak up on them doesn t work. It is best to stand still and let them come to you. You may think most dragonflies are black or a dark color, but when you get up close you can see different colors, white, yellow, blue, and green. Some male dragonflies are territorial and stay in one area to protect it from other males of the same species. That is why you see them perched on a plant waiting for any intruder to chase it away. If you happen by at the right time, high over the garden you may see dragonflies engaged in aerial combat. One such dragonfly is the common white tail. This dragonfly has a thick white abdomen and black barred wings. He is easy to spot. Another dragonfly visitor is the Eastern or common pondhawk. He is powder blue. The female, and the immature male has a bright green thorax, head and upper abdomen. The green darner who looks like the female pondhawk, but does not have as much green, has also been spotted. If you have an interest in dragonflies come to the garden to see the many varieties. (continued on next page)
4 A snowberry clearing hummingbird moth (Hemaris diffinis) visits garden plants for nectar. Many people think it is a humming bird until they see the antennae. Its wings move very quickly, just like a hummingbird s. It darts from plant to plant. The snowberry looks like a giant, fat wasp or bumblebee. It is yellow and has a large dark band across its abdomen. Another clearwing (Hemaris thysbe) also visits. This moth has similar markings as the snowberry, but they are reddish. These moths are the only moths that fly in the daytime. Look for a plant that has a lot of bee activity and you may see the hummingbird moths. While a gardener was watering with a hose, a ruby throated hummingbird hovered nearby as though he wanted a drink, but didn t know how to get it. The American goldfinches are attracted to sunflowers and were seen feeding on insects there. Later they will visit looking for seeds which is their favorite food. Why don t you become a visitor to the garden? Rest on the benches drinking coffee or walk around and see if you can spot one of our summer visitors. See the Prairie Garden table, located in the Willow Lake Clubhouse, for pictures of the visitors. Beginners Guide to Dragonflies, Nikola, Sones and Stokes.
