2 Board of Directors OC49ers as of August 2018 President: Tommy Grogan Vice-President: Jim Dromi Secretary: (As of August 1 st, 2018, still seeking Secretary) Treasurer: Shirley Dromi Claims Chairman: Ray Kender Wagon Master: Shirley Rowe Editor: John Gillen Meeting Schedule for 2018 The monthly Board of Directors Meeting will be held at approximately 5:30pm every third Tuesday of the month at the Garden Grove Women s Club located at 9501 Chapman Avenue, Garden Grove, California (Corner of Chapman and Gilbert). The monthly General Meeting will convene at approximately 7:30pm immediately following the Board of Directors Meeting on the same day and at the same location. Minutes of the last Board of Directors Meeting held on July 17, 2018 as transcribed and condensed by Editor John Gillen The Board of Directors Meeting convened at 6:15pm and was called to order by President Tommy Grogan. All officers were present with the exception of an active secretary. 1. Claim fees need to be paid by September 1 st in the amount of $ Puppyfeet Reclamation still awaiting word from BLM on moving forward with reclamation. 3. Pot O Gold is up to 3 nuggets for tonight s member drawing. 4. Purchasing a banner was discussed and approved to investigate cost further. 5. There was a motion to promote the club to the Boy Scouts of America. The motion was seconded and passed, with Jim Dromi taking responsibility for pursuing contact with the Boy Scouts. 6. There was a motion to pay the Editor John Gillen for ink used for club printing in the amount of $15.00 per month with purchases of paper and envelopes paid on receipt. The motion was seconded and passed. The Board Meeting was adjourned at 7:20pm.

4 PRESIDENTS NOTES I hope everyone has been able to get out in the open space and air, away from the smoke in Orange County. It s been pretty bad for all concerned. I went to the Johannesburg area and found 102 degrees but not much smoke. I checked out the dangerous holes on HMC. They are as bad as the pictures suggest. I have asked for one estimate for reclaiming. If we have any members that can run equipment like an excavator or back hoe we would appreciate hearing from you. Our guest speaker August 21 meeting will be Kristin Rowe. She will be speaking about geo caching which is a form of treasure hunting. She will be joined by daughter Mika and son Nathan. What is geo caching? Why would the members be interested in it? It's great for all ages that love a good old fashioned treasure hunt. As we all know, most of us don't dig for gold in the summer, too hot. Also, we don't dig for gold to get rich. It's the thrill of the hunt. There are over 3 MILLION geo caches to find throughout the world! Geo caching fulfills the excitement of the hunt without getting dirty and hot (most of the year). Kirstin will show examples of what to look for, how to find them and what tools you need. There is a geo cache in the parking lot for an example that we can find that night. I would also like to thank Bill from Mad Mining for the presentation he did on a battery powered dry washer. It looks good especially for fine gold but it works for all sizes. Over all I think that the club is progressing very well. We have 142 members at the last meeting. We still need a secretary to fulfill our board requirements. We have a great board of directors so new need you to be part of our team. Tommy Grogan President WAGON MASTER S REPORT I am sitting in my yard and just thinking what a beautiful day it is and how much we enjoyed our beach outing last month. Pictures tell a thousand words so I have enclosed a few. The weather was perfect under our Easyup and the food was good. Thank you to those that contributed to our pot luck. Note we have a change of schedule this month for our August outing. This time, as promised, our outing will be on the 3rd Saturday of the month August 18th, one weekend earlier than normal.. We will be at Bolsa Chica beach by lifeguard tower 23 or as close as we can get. Look for our big white van. I will put a sign in the back window. We will again have a coin hunt and potluck. We will hold the hunt about 10am. Come early and stay late, your choice. If you happen to get there way early please grab a fire ring for us. Bring your kids and grand-kids. Looking forward to seeing you at the beach on Saturday August 18 th.

6 EDITOR S NOTE Well, here we are again, in the middle of another hot summer. Need i remind everyone to stay hydrated? Anyhow, just thought I would also remind everyone that only you can prevent forest fires. Does anyone remember what Smokey The Bear s middle name is? Ask your kids they always know. We all know there has been a rash of fires all around California and there has even been loss of life which no one wants. This means we all need to be extra vigilant and keep our campfires low and our spirits high. Be sure to extinguish your ground fires way before you exit your camp. A smoldering fire left unattended is as big a hazard as a full fire. Embers can still blow out and across the ground for hundreds of feet and ignite further and more damaging fires. A good rule of thumb is No Smoke Arising before leaving the campsite at all. Where there is smoke there is always fire. I know most of you are experienced enough that all this could go without saying but that time when one of us forgets this important information is the time when millions in damages and even losing someone s loved ones can happen in the blink of an eye. Be extra careful and share this wonderful part of the American Dream for years to come. On another note, we are still in need of a Secretary to record the notes of our various meetings. Currently, Jim Dromi has agreed to provide us his time and effort temporarily and keep the records. However Jim is also the acting Vice President and has other duties that need his constant attention. So while Jim is doing a great service, don t think that his work will be available forever. We still need someone to step up to help with this position. Also, men, please keep in mind that this job is not reserved for the ladies in our club. The right gentleman could do us the same service. The title of Secretary should not be taken as a primarily female one. Thanks again to everyone for their kind encouragement and remember to tell your friends and family about the club. 7 Have you heard about the Desert Trumpet? Anyone who pursues the activity of prospecting for valuable minerals should know about it. Also known by its species name of Eriogonum inflatum, the Desert Trumpet is a perennial plant of the family Polygonaceae. The plant possesses very small yellow or pink flowers and an inflated stem just below branching segments. Eriogonum: from the Greek erion, wool, and gonu, joint or knee, in reference to the hairy or woolly joints of some of the species of the genus, but not particularly inflatum. It is found in the Mojave Desert and other deserts. Stems The swelling of the stems was assumed to have been influenced by the presence of gall insects, most notably of the genus Odynerus. The female wasp produces a small hole on the inflated portion of the Desert Trumpet, packs the cavity with larvae and lays her eggs upon them, providing a food source, and a protected environment for the offspring. Irritation caused by this process was said to have enlarged the cavity over time. Recently, research performed by a world authority on the genus Eriogonum, Dr. J.L. Reveal of the University of Maryland, College Park, revealed the swollen stem of Eriogonum inflatum is due to high concentrations of carbon dioxide in the solid stem and seems to be related to gas regulation. Some insects utilize the swollen stem as a larder, but the inflation is not caused by the larval feeding of gall insects. Uses It is known that some Native American tribes that once inhabited the surrounding areas of the Las Vegas Valley (most commonly Paiute) would remove the stalk of E. inflatum at the base, and then cut the inflated bulb in half, producing a makeshift pipe. A mixture of Indian tobacco and mistletoe would be smoked primarily for leisure purposes. This plant makes a brief appearance in Star Trek: Voyager, in Season 3, Episode 1, at around the 3 minute 47 second mark, when the character Neelix is shown to be looking at a picked specimen. Now, you may be wondering why I have decided to include this article in the Golden Aura.

8 The Desert Trumpet is said to be present in highly mineralized soil throughout the arid deserts of California and abroad. While the species is fond of mineralized soil it is not always directly associated with gold bearing ground, however, it has been present in many of the desert claims worked by prospectors in California and as such should not be overlooked when staking out an area where one might plan to mine. So, keep a keen eye out for this little fella as he might just be the Leprechaun of the desert and lead you to your next big find. The Desert Trumpet Closeup of the flower
