1 SHAKESPEARE IN A SUITCASE PRESENTS THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE ADAPTED BY MICHAEL REDWOOD a SPLATS ENTERTIANMENT primary text CAST: MACBETH MACDUFF BANQUO ROSS 8 WITCH/WARLOCK VIKING KING VIKINGS KING DUNCAN KING OF VIKINGS ACT 1 SQ1: LATER KING DUNCAN, ROSS MACDUFF are U.S.C on a platform. WITCHES in front and armies on benches S.L and S.R. O, for a muse of C.G.I, we have no screens to create scenes no Hollywood, no digital tricks For Macbeth's tale, a poor player that struts and frets his hour on this stage. A Scots warrior, who saved his land gainst the Vikings and slaughters them. All hail Macbeth, All hail Macbeth All hail Macbeth, All hail Macbeth Then he's tempted by three witches to kill his king, to kill his king suffers forever. All hail Macbeth, All hail Macbeth
2 All hail Macbeth, All hail Macbeth So please dear friends help us with your imagination please help with your powerful minds Let us see this hall for Scotland, this bench a fort, this class a battle and year (say class names may need extra beats) are: warriors, queens, witches, ghosts, forgive our efforts made in one day for your fun and entertainment... All hail Macbeth, All hail Macbeth SQ1: LATER CUT SQ 2: TEARS WITCHES have their backs to audience. WITCHES come D.S.C ALL WITCHES: WITCH 1: WITCH 2: When shall we three meet again? In thunder lightning or in rain? WITCH 3: RAVEN 1: RAVEN 2: RAVEN 3: When the hurly burly's done, When the battle's lost and won. Just before the set of sun. Where the place? RAVEN 4: Upon the heath? ALL: There to meet with Macbeth. KING DUNCAN (frail old man) U.S.C who listens to the battle report. WARRIORS line up for battle. The VIKINGS either side MACBETH in the middle. MACBETH'S WARRIORS are in a circle with double the amount of VIKINGS either side. SQ 2: TEARS CUT SQ 3: LATER IN SLOW MOTION MACBETH'S circle of WARRIORS gets tighter until MACBETH roars and starts killing all the VIKINGS in his way to the NORWEGIAN KING kills him and lifts his crown. During this the WITCHES enjoy the battle. In one corner of the stage is KING DUNCN'S tent. A wounded soldier enters. SOLDIER: Hail, King Duncan!
3 DUNCAN: SOLDIER: Can you tell us anything about the battle? Yes my lord. We won because Macbeth was so brave. Here is what the soldier said: Doubtful the bloody battle stood, gainst the Vikings and traitors like swimmers clinging together and drowning each other. But brave Macbeth, with brandished sword sliced through the Viking soldiers until he faced their King and without speaking a word he killed him, chopped off his head. ALL All hail Macbeth All hail Macbeth All hail Macbeth EVERYONE cheers NARROTOR: BANQUO: Banquo saw another army attacking he warned his friend Macbeth. MACBETH more enemies!!! ALL VIKINGS rise again I am as scared as lions are of rabbits. NARROTOR: Macbeth exploded like a cannon with his swirling sword and in short... SQ 3: LATER CUT SOLDIER: The victory fell to us. KING DUNCAN: Brave Macbeth. From U.S.C. ROSS: The enemy were helped by Lord Cawdor. KING DUNCAN: Execute him, give his title to Macbeth. Then suddenly... Meanwhile, on the battlefield Macbeth and his best friend Banquo stood inthe mist. Only MACBETH and BANQUO stand on the battle field surrounded by dead WARRIORS. The WITCHES dance to the bodies SQ4: TEARS ALL WITCHES:
4 ALL WITCH: WITCH 1: WITCH 2: WITCH 3: WITHCH 1: WITCHES: All hail Macbeth. You will be lord of Cawdor You will be king. HAIL BANQUO you wont be so great. But your children will be kings. SO ALL HAIL.MACBETH AND BANQUO WITCHES fly to benches squawking, SQ4: TEARS CUT They have disappeared. After the witches had disappeared Lord Ross and Macduff arrived with amazing news. Ross said... ROSS: The king is so happy with you he says you can be lord Cawdor. Lord Cawdor is alive. MACDUFF: He is a traitor, he will die. BANQUO: (to audience) What the witches said is true. Amazing. You will be king! Your sons will be Kings!...and so after winning the battle Macbeth met the witches who called him Lord of Cawdor and said he will be king. But strangely they promised Banquo's children would be king. Let's find out what happens with the next group a round of applause for group 1. SQ5: SCENE CHANGE MUSIC GREEKS ARE WINNING END OF ACT 1
5 CAST: MACBETH RAVENS LADY MACBETH BANQUO FLEANCE: FUTURE KING ROSS MACDUFF 8 WITCH/WARLOCKS KING DUNCAN DUNCAN'S GAURD PORTER MURDERERS SQ5: SCENE CHANGE MUSIC ACT 2 fastest Ross told Macbeth that the king would visit his castle tonight. Macbeth sent his rider with a letter to tell Lady Macbeth what the witches had said. ALL CAST leave the stage LADY MACBETH goes D.S.C with a letter. me To audience and Exit MESSANGER ( Reading) The witches said I would be Lord of Cawdor then Ross arrived and told I was made Lord of Cawdor. The witches also said I will be king and suddenly they disappeared. King Duncan is visiting tonight. Macbeth will be king. I want him to be king. Just then Macbeth arrived. Lady Macbeth had a plan to drug King Duncan's guards kill him as they slept. She saw Macbeth My hero. The king comes to stay here tonight....and you will kill him. SQ6: ROOKS NARROTOR: King Duncan arrived, he liked the look of the castle. ENTER DUNCAN, ROSS and SOLDIERS DUNCAN: What a pleasant castle.
6 SQ6: ROOKS CUT SQ7: TEARS outside RAVEN1: RAVEN2: RAVEN3: RAVEN4: RAVEN5: RAVEN5: SQ7: TEARS CUT out LADY MAC: RAVEN 6: RAVEN 7: RAVEN 8: Welcome. I will show you your room. Later that night, when everyone was having a celebration party, Macbeth went doubting he could kill King Duncan. If I killed Duncan could it all be forgotten? Here is what MACBETH thought. But it wont be. You will teach people to kill a king....and they will kill you when you are king. He's your guest. You don't kill guests....and he is your cousin too. I don't want to do it. Macbeth decided against killing Duncan to become king then Lady Macbeth came of the party. What are you doing? I won't kill him. You promised. Here is what LADY MACBETH said. Get Duncan's guards drunk. Kill king Duncan. Blame the guards, kill them. I will do it. And so, when the evening came. MACBETH crept through the corridors towards DUNCAN'S chamber. the WITCHES with a DAGGER. SQ8: TEARS Is this a dagger I see before me? SQ9: SINGLE BELL TOLLING MACBETH follows the dagger which is carried by the witches. The bells tolls. The bell calls you to heaven or to hell.
7 BELLS toll WITCHES move off the stage is empty we only here the bell. SQ9: SINGLE BELL TOLLING CUT PAUSE SQ10: LOOKING FOR THE GHOST ENTER LADY MACBETH. She walks around looking in the dark listening. ENTER MACBETH. Macbeth came out of King Duncan's room after killing him. He still had the knives. Why have you got the daggers. I am not going back in there. I will. EXIT LADY MACBETH SQ10: LOOKING FOR THE GHOST CUT Is alone listening silence. Then knocking. ENTER LADY MACBETH. SQ11 : KNOCKING ON DOOR Quick someone is coming lets wash the blood off our hands. PORTER: Knock, knock, knock. Who is it, the devil? SQ11: KNOCKING ON DOOR STOP ENTER MACDUFF, BANQUO and GUARDS SQ12 : THUNDERSTORM BANQUO: MACDUFF: BANQUO: The next morning BANQUO and MACDUFF came in to MACBETH'S hall. You are up early. The king asked me to wake him up. EXIT off SR What a stormy night with wolves, owls and ravens screaming all night. MACDUFF: (screams) THE KING IS MURDERED. SQ12 : THUNDERSTORM STOP Macbeth killed King Duncan and made it look like it was the King's guards that didi it. Everyone was confused and frightened as King Duncan had been a kind old man. Duncan's son Malcolm ran away to England. Macbeth was happy and threw a big party but he had one problem. The witches said Banquo's children would be Kings not Macbeth's so he sent murderers to kill them when they were out in the forest. SQ13: WOLVES BAYING THE FOREST A green cloth is pulled across the stage the three MURDERERS appear.
8 BANQUO: We are nearly there son. It will rain tonight. MURDERERS: Let it come down. The MURDERERS appear from below the cloth and pull BANQUO down. BANQUO: Fly Fleance. FLEANCE comes to the DSC and stares in panic and runs. SQ13 : WOLVES BAYING STOP Fleance had survived but Banquo was dead lets find out if what the witches say is true with the next group. A round of applause for group 2. END OF ACT 2 SQ14 : CHANGE MUSIC SQ14 : CHANGE MUSIC STOP ACT 3 CAST: MACBETH LADY MACBETH BANQUO GHOST ROSS MACDUFF 3 WITCHES RAVENS KING DUNCAN GHOSTS DUNCAN'S GUARD MURDERERS BANQUET All the guests stand behind the cloth so it looks like a table with tankards and freeze. BANQUO is hiding beneath the cloth. WITCHES at the side. NARRATTOR: Macbeth had killed his best friend and his son, so he thought. Now he was having a party to celebrate becoming King when Banquo's blood covered murderers came to report to Macbeth... MACBETH D.S.C MURDERERS join him with red juggling scarves on them. MACBETH : You have blood on you. MURDERER1: It is Banquo's blood. It is better on you than in him and Fleance? MURDERER2: He escaped. The worm fled. Go. Your party has started. LADY MACBETH D.S.C MACDUFF: Lord, sit here there is a space. SQ15 : GHOST OF PAST There is a space but as MACBETH turns BANQUO rises and with a skull and points at MACBETH. MACBETH screams.
9 Look. Who did this? Pointing at the ghost The GUESTS look at the BANQUO place they do not see BANQUO GUESTS: What? You are imagining things. BANQUO rises again walks around pointing at MACBETH MACBETH screams. LADY Everyone out. CAST go to sit down. Blood will have blood. I will go to the witches. SQ15 : GHOST OF PAST SQ16: TEARS ALL WITCHES: WITCH1: WITCH2: Round about the cauldron go; In the poison'd entrails throw. ALL WITCHES: WITCH 3: Fire burn, and cauldron bubble. Eye of newt and toe of frog, WITCH 1: WITCH 2: WITCH 3: Wool of bat and tongue of dog, For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. ALL : WITCH 1: By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes.
10 I am the King. I have questions for you. RAVEN 1: RAVEN 2: RAVEN 3: GHOSTS APPEAR Speak. Demand. We'll answer. GHOST 1: GHOST2: GHOST3: WITCH1: Beware of Macduff. Good advice. I will kill him. None of woman born will harm Macbeth. Yes, No one who has been born can hurt me. You shall not be beaten in battle until the woods march to the castle. Until the woods attack my castle. But will Banquo children be kings. Ask no more. Tell me. When he sees BANQUO. Horrible sight! SQ 16: TEARS STOP BANQUO ENTERS with KINGS following him. WITCHES fly around and disappear MACBETH is alone in shock. Now Macbeth was sure he was safe as King he just needed to kill Macduff. No man of woman born could kill him and he wouldn't be beaten until the woods march to his castle. Let see what happens with group 4 and big round of applause for group 3. END OF ACT 3 SQ 17: CHANGE MUSIC SQ 17: CHANGE MUSIC STOP MACBETH LADY MACBETH PRINCE MALCOLM SEYTON MACDUFF MESSENGER 1&2 WARRIORS DOCTOR ACT 4 PRINCE MALCOLM in the from of the WARRIORS in a battle inverted v. LADY MACBETH come forward for their part either reading or physically performing as the NARRATOR speaks the lines in time to the music. MACBETH USC He is like a trapped hunted animal stuck in the centre.with WITCHES S.R, MALCOM, WARRIORS S.L, MACDUFF, ROSS SEYTON, LADY MACDUFF, MACDUFF CHILDREN LADY MACBETH
11 U.S.C. He is like a trapped hunted animal stuck in the centre. Macbeth had believed the witches all along. He had killed king Ducan, killed his best Friend Banquo and any one he thought would get in his way. Now the witches had told him no man of woman born could kill him and not until the woods marched to his castle could he be beaten. And wasn't going to happen was it? All he had to do was kill Macduff and he was safe or was he? SQ18: LATER SOLDIER 1: SOLDIER 2: Take an army and kill Macduff! My Lord, Macduff has escaped. Then attack his castle and kill everyone there! His family as well? Yes. Go! We see the MACDUFF FAMILY get killed. Here is what MACBETH though. Now I'm unbeatable they say. none of woman born can kill me. Until the woods march to my fort. Macduff has run off to England So kill his wife, his kids and all A while later in England, MACDUFF receives the news. SOLDIERS, MACDUFF, MALCOLM and MESSENGER ENTER. MACDUFF: Messengers! Any news from my family? MESSENGER 1: My Lord, your family is dead. MESSENGER 2: Macbeth killed them. MACDUFF: MALCOLM: SOLDIER 1: MALCOLM: SOLDIER 2: Then Macbeth must die! Together we have soldiers. I will help you fight Macbeth. My Lord, how will we defeat him if he stays in his castle? Cary the branches from the wood. Then he will not see how many soldiers we have We will trick him to come out and fight! Meanwhile in MACBETH'S castle. Out damned spot out.i say who would of thought the old man
12 Had so much blood in him. Blood, out. DOCTOR: She has gone mad. I don't think she will live much longer. SQ18: LATER STOP THE WARRIORS, MACDUFF, ROSS, PRINCE MALCOLM AND FLEANCE all lift tree hands and slowly march to MACBETH SQ19: FIRE BATTLE ENTER SEYTON SEYTON: Macbeth The woods march to the castle? EXIT SEYTON The witches tricked me What else?! SEYTON:...The queen is dead. She would have died anyway. Get me my sword, at least I will die fighting. SOLDIERS fight in slow motion. MACBETH faces MACDUFF. MACBETH MACDUFF: You will die! No man of a woman born can kill me. Then you will die! I was untimely ripped from my mothers womb. The witches tricked me. Play on Macduff. MACDUFF and MACBETH fight until MACDUFF: The rare monster is dead, we are free! SQ19: FIRE BATTLE STOP All cheer. and that is the tragedy of Macbeth. A big round of applause for group 4. SQ 2O: MARTHAR EXIT MUSIC a BIT JOLLY THE END
