2 THANK YOU! for saving lives in 2017! Another year has closed upon us and I hope your year was as great as ours. You deserve these kudos, because Caring Hands Humane Society is only as great as you allow us to be. Many of you are adopting animals, advocating on our behalf, sharing posts and pictures of animals who need homes, and sending people to adopt a homeless animal. Others sponsor the medical needs of animals or provide for the needs of all animals through donations, memberships, memorials, or our Life Sustaining Membership (monthly donation). About 75 dedicated volunteers serve at the Humane Society once or twice a week. Other volunteers help with our Ride for the Dogs poker run or off-site adoption events. Every day after school, five or six children age 10 and up care for the physical and mental needs of our homeless animals. One person walks dogs while on lunch break every day. Many volunteers foster kittens and puppies until they are ready for adoption, or care for adult animals recovering from trauma. Our corporate relationships are extremely valuable, also. We re grateful for sponsors and media coverage to make our Ride for the Dogs event such a success. Some businesses showcase our adoptable animals at their location. Other companies match 100% of an employee s charitable giving to the Humane Society or to the city of Newton for the creation of the Centennial Dog Park. All of you play a vital role in the health and wellbeing of homeless animals at Caring Hands Humane Society. Without you, we wouldn t be able to run the various programs that save more lives. Our Mighty Mouser program adopted into barn homes 222 community cats that were too independent to live inside of a home as somebody s pet. Our Community Cat Alteration Management Program (CAMP) spayed/ neutered, vaccinated and treated 114 felines for worms, fleas, ticks, ear mites. We re glad to provide these services for outdoor felines cared for by the loving people of Newton. These two programs, coupled with adoptions and working with other rescue groups who took a record number of 55 dogs, have the greatest potential to save lives while reducing the number of felines coming through our doors. We experienced a 93.1% overall Live Release Rate (LRR) with 98% of all dogs finding homes or reunited with their owner. With the 10% increase in feline adoptions last year, you helped save 89.2% (LRR) of all the cats. With your continued support in 2018, we will reach 90% for the cats also! Thank you each and every one! Kevin Stubbs, Executive Director 3

4 Volunteer Corner Just a Reminder Which Will The Doggie Choose? In the second experiment, the dog was given the option to beg for food from two different researchers. Both researchers were in different attentional states such as reading a book, having a bucket on their head, talking on a cell phone, etc. The dog was then released to choose which person it wants to beg from. The results were then recorded. We hope to share the results of the experiments with you in the future. Our thanks go to Stephanie, Taylor, and Brianna for choosing Caring Hands Humane Society to do their school project with. They were amazing to work with and did a really good job. We would love to have them back any time to volunteer or just stop in to say hello and play with the animals. Last November, Bethel College students Stephanie, Taylor, and Brianna conducted a fun experiment with yummy doggie treats. The students conducted two different experiments to observe how interaction between humans and dogs might affect a dog s actions. In the first experiment, one researcher held a dog back a few feet from two different bowls while the other researcher stood between the two bowls with two different treats in them. The person standing by the bowls pointed to one of the bowls, while the other student released the dog to choose one of the bowls. The bowl the dog selected was then recorded by the third researcher. 4

5 A Bountiful Giving Tree! Every year, our giving tree is set up in our lobby the day after Thanksgiving through December 31st. Ornaments are hung with suggested gifts for the different animals in our facility. These are gifts that we usually don t ask for throughout the year, such as puzzle games for mental stimulation or deer antlers from the hunters. Dogs love to chew on these antlers and they last forever. Thank you for all of the thoughtful gifts from our generous donors. Caring Hands received so many donations that we were not able to fit everything under our Giving Tree! The lobby was overflowing with numerous useful resources for the animals in our care. Of course, the current furry residents were the first to be spoiled with rawhides, new toys, and blankets. A Bluetooth speaker was given to provide relaxing music to our shelter animals, and a couple brought in quite an arrangement of Bark Boxes to keep them entertained! The dogs received a grand upgrade to their daily meals as well thanks to Mrs. Klaus, who brought us 7,100 lbs. of Blue Buffalo brand dog food! All of us in the office were happy to be gifted with new supplies including a laminator and label maker which we are so excited to put to good use! We were also so grateful for paper towels and cleaning supplies for all the messes that ensue. We were able to stock our cabinets full of canned food for the cats and spoils for the dogs, along with all kinds of dry food and dental treats for both. Of all these things, the best gift to us is knowing we have the greatest supporters in our community. We couldn t do what we do without you. Thank you! First Saturday Is Bath Day! Dog Wash is the first Saturday of each month 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you would like us to wash your dog, visit caringhandshs.org and submit a form. Prices vary by size of dog: 25 lbs. or less: 26 lbs. to 50 lbs: 51 lbs to 99 lbs: 100 lbs and up: $10 $15 $20 $25

6 Should you clean your pet s teeth? We all pay attention to the pet s coat condition, nails, eyes, and weight, but we tend not to notice the pet s teeth until they try to give us a lick in the face and we catch a whiff of their breath. Veterinarians recommend a teeth cleaning at least once a year, but most people ask why. As you can see from the pictures below, it is very important. Without regular cleaning, poor dental hygiene can severely impact your pet s health. BEFORE Some signs to watch for, other than smelly breath, are: not eating, only eating on one side, and blood or plaque on pet toys. Not cleaning the teeth can lead to diseases like gingivitis or infection, which can affect the other organs of the body. An infection in the mouth because of eroding gums and thick plaque could enter the blood stream and cause problems with the liver and kidneys. Sometimes the mouth can show signs of other diseases, like hypothyroidism, immune-mediated diseases and diabetes. AFTER Tips to keep your pet s teeth clean between doctor visits: Brush your dog s or cat s teeth 2-3 times a week with an animal toothpaste. DO NOT USE human toothpaste! The fluoride will cause the pet to be sick. You can use a tooth brush that comes with the toothpaste, 4x4 gauze pads on your finger, or just your finger to brush with. Only the outside area of the teeth need be done at home. Please do not attempt to brush the inside of the teeth or to brush the teeth of a pet that doesn t like its mouth messed with. For the pets that don t like their mouths messed with, dental treats are helpful. Another option is to feed your pet a dental diet with larger kibbles that scrape off plaque when chewed. February is Dental Health month. Most veterinary clinics and hospitals will have discounts to help with the cost. But why wait if it means more years to share with your pet? 6
