Today, it makes just as an appealing escape from the city, offering our visitors fresh air and beautiful scenery. Built on the side of a hill, the name is thought to be derived from the Gaelic word craobh meaning among the trees. Crieff has a traditional High Street with a wide array of independent shops, cafés and art galleries. The town square makes a natural arena for a country market on the second Saturday of every month from April to December - see page 7. A short walk from the town centre will take you to Macrosty Park which houses a traditional Victorian bandstand and landscaped gardens - see page 18. The river Earn borders the town and offers tranquil walks through the shaded woodland either side. WELCOME Strathearn is at the very heart of Scotland and is an area made up of a collection of small traditional towns and villages. The whole area is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and has long been a favourite destination for holiday makers and visitors. It is a true gateway to the Highlands. Here you ll find lochs and rivers, rich pastures, hills and mountainous slopes, as well as beautiful indigenous forests. Our central position offers convenient access from which to explore further afield in Scotland. Edinburgh and Glasgow are only an hour s drive away, and a visit to the Highlands makes an enjoyable day-trip. Hospitality is something we take seriously. We can offer our visitors a wide choice of quality accommodation across the region. Our landscape provides a wealth of local produce which inspires our cooks and chefs to create some truly memorable meals. This guide has been prepared by local people to help you make the most of your time here with us. Whether you are visiting us for the day or are here for a week, we aim to provide you with all the information you need to help you enjoy exploring Strathearn. For golfers, Crieff has a reputable 18-hole course; here you can play a round whilst admiring the view over the Strath. The highlight of Crieff s summer calendar is the Highland Gathering. Since the first one in 1870, the Gathering has brought locals and visitors alike to the Market Park site each year in mid August to watch the spectacle of traditional highland sports, track events, highland dancing and pipe band displays. The picturesque village of COMRIE, is situated about 15km from Crieff. It too has a traditional high street, and the river Earn running through it; Comrie is the perfect place to take a peaceful afternoon stroll. Behind the village in the wooded hillside lays the Deil s Cauldron and some beautiful waterfalls. Comrie lies on the Highland Boundary Fault and has been recording earth tremors from all round the world at its Earthquake House. To welcome in the New Year, Comrie holds an annual Flambeaux torchlight procession. The Flambeaux has been paraded for many years and was originally a means to drive out evil spirits. Today this is a joyous occasion with a pipe band and a traditional Scottish dance or ceilidh as a finale. 2

ABOUT STRATHEARN Our largest loch is Loch Earn. At one end sits the small, charming resort village of ST FILLANS with its beautiful houses and idyllic setting on the loch side. Here you ll find great loch-side camp sites as well as several hotels and restaurants. There are plenty of places to fish all around the loch edge. Above the south side of the loch stands one of the highest peaks in the area, Ben Vorlich. At the other end of the loch is a water-sports centre, boasting excellent facilities in an unrivalled setting. FOWLIS WESTER is a little village with a big history. Surrounded by ancient burial sites, standing stones and Pictish and Roman ruins. The village itself with its 13th Century church was once a thriving community; now the population is few, but a visit here gives you a true feeling of Strathearn s unique history. Head south from Crieff, and you ll pass through MUTHILL, a small conservation village with a distinctly floral reputation. During the Scotland in Bloom contest the houses and streets are festooned with flowers. At the folk museum nearby you ll be able to find out more about the history of the area, and from the outskirts of the village you ll be able to admire the views back across Strathearn. Bordering the area on the opposite side of the Strath, sitting at the foot of the Ochil hills, is the town of AUCHTERARDER. Known locally as the Lang Toon because it has one very long high street, it is lined with quality independent shops and plenty of places to stop for a coffee or a bite to eat. Just outside the town, is the exclusive golf resort of Gleneagles. The famous hotel and golf course stands in acres of beautiful countryside and offers a wealth of pursuits for the outdoor enthusiast such as horse-riding, shooting, fishing and falconry. The village of BLACKFORD is part of south west Strathearn. Just off the main (A9) road, the village has been well known for centuries for its local source of pure natural spring water. The Allan River runs through Blackford on it s way down from the Ochil Hills and today the village is the home of Highland Spring mineral water. You ll find a twenty first century distillery here too. Tullibardine was renovated in 2003 on the site of a brewery dating back to the twelfth Century. Next door, you ll find a visitor centre with restaurant, café and plenty of retail outlets. The village of Blackford is the first fixture of the year on the Highland Games circuit here in Strathearn. 3 4

For morning coffee, afternoon tea or a leisurely lunch the choice is extensive with a wonderful selection of small cafés, coffee shops and tea rooms to choose from. Enjoy home-made cakes and shortbread, or a tasty broth and tattie scone, or some delicious smoked salmon or local butcher s sausages; the local pies and haggis are good too! EATING OUT Strathearn is a prominent feature on the food and drink map of Scotland. This area is a prime location for quality local produce, with specialist food shops and several award winning restaurants. Often called Scotland s Larder, this part of the country is famed for providing excellent produce. Sheep, cattle and deer feed on the lush pasture land; the woodlands are alive with feathered and furred game; the rivers and lochs are teeming with fish, and in summer, Perthshire is the berry capital of Scotland. Eating out here is a real feast for the senses. And not forgetting something to drink, Crieff and Blackford boast their very own distilleries, so you can enjoy a local dram or two as well! If you want to make the most of being out of doors, why not visit one of our delicatessens and make up your own fabulous picnic from the tempting array of locally sourced goodies for sale? If you re self catering, there are plenty of shops, large and small, selling the best of what we have to offer. Our traditional high streets have butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers and bakers, as well as small general grocers and supermarkets for other provisions. Many of our shops offer a local delivery service so you can have things delivered straight to your accommodation. The inspiring quality of the food here has led to an impressive diversity of restaurants and eateries that will satisfy even the most sophisticated and cosmopolitan of tastes. We have some of the most innovative chefs and cooks who are very proud and enthusiastic about the food they have here on their doorstep and many strive to include local, seasonal produce on their menus. Wherever you are in the area you will be able to find at least one café, restaurant or hotel serving freshly cooked meals and a chef or cook making the most of the food we have local to Perthshire and from around the rest of the country. 5 Strathearn is surrounded by soft fruit growers and to celebrate our love of berries, we held a berry festival in August last year. Some of the shops put on berry-themed window displays and many of our local bars, restaurants and cafes highlighted berries on their menus. We turned our regular August market day into a day-long berry extravaganza with live music, face painting, local chefs and cooks creating delicious berry recipes, free berries to give away, plus stalls selling all sorts of different berry produce. We also had a VIP visitor too: we were honoured with a visit from Struan the Strathearn Strawberry! Since the days of the cattle drovers, Crieff has been a market town, and in keeping with tradition, over the past few years, the town centre square has played host to a regular group of modern day market traders and stallholders. From April to December, on the second Saturday of every month, James Square in the centre of Crieff acts as the perfect arena for our country market. Stall holders and local businesses offer a varied selection of food, herbs and plants, as well as arts, crafts and gifts. Some months, around noon, you may get the chance to see one of Strathearn s finest chefs in action demonstrating recipes using the best local and seasonal produce we have in the area. There are often recipes to give away and always plenty of tasters to enjoy. As well as our regular market activities, from time to time, we have face painting for the kids and we run foodie events and competitions for all ages, such as gingerbread people and cup cake decorating for budding young chefs; local and seasonal produce tasting tables to give you a real flavour of the area, and for anyone with a hearty appetite, we ve run doughnut and Scotch pie eating championships! We have plenty of events planned for 2011 so you never know what might be happening on market day. Why not pay us a visit if you re in Crieff on the second Saturday of the month, and come and see for yourselves. 7 8

SHOPPING Small, traditional towns and villages are often the ideal place to look for something unique, and the area of Crieff & Strathearn is no exception. You ll find plenty of shops stocking a variety of interesting and locally produced goods. Many of the towns and villages here have been fortunate enough to retain their traditional high streets with their own independent shops and boutiques, arts and craft galleries and specialist gift shops. In more rural settings, you ll find independent garden centres and farm shops selling local produce, plants and specialist crafts. If you re looking for something to rejuvenate your home or garden, we have some excellent shops specialising in beautiful accessories, furniture and housewares which can give any house or garden a new and distinctly different look. Food lovers are bound to be enticed by our delis selling a range of delicious artisan foods from all over the region including hand-made chocolates and traditional sweets; home-made jams, chutneys and preserves; delicious, freshly prepared pastries and bakery goods; smoked salmon; Scottish cheeses, oils and vinegars, and liqueurs. If whisky s your passion, why not take a visit to our two local distilleries and sample the nation s favourite tipple you can also see how it s made - and you re guaranteed a very warm welcome. 9 10

ARTS & CRAFTS Scotland has been an inspiration to artists and crafts people for hundreds of years. Here in this pocket of Perthshire you ll find plenty of unique Scottish artwork inspired by the local surroundings. All around Strathearn, there are galleries large and small, antique and contemporary, exhibiting and selling a huge variety of work by local artists and artists from other parts of the country. There are also potteries, workshops, and independent art and craft retail shops. You ll find traditional and modern artwork on offer from painting, photography, ceramics and wood, to glassware, jewellery, fabrics and sculpture. In Crieff, we have two established art galleries on or just off the main high street, whilst the Visitor Centre houses Caithness Glass, and Waterford and Stuart Crystal has their main show room across the road from the Centre. At our monthly market in James Square, several local artists and craft makers exhibit their work, and give passersby the chance to buy something quite different to help them commemorate their visit to the area. In September each year, we have the opportunity to meet many of our artists, designers and craft makers in their own environment. From solo-artists to groups and galleries, at different venues all over Strathearn and the rest of the county of Perthshire, visitors are invited into the studios of participating artists to see and experience firsthand a diverse range of Scottish arts and crafts. In previous years, we ve had photography exhibitions, mosaic classes and soap making workshops. This weekend gives our visitors the opportunity to see something unique to our area. To find out who s taking part in the area and for the dates of this year s event take a look at the Events Diary on page 29 for more information. So, if you re a serious collector or someone just looking for an original memento, we re confident that you ll find the perfect something to take home with you

OUT & ABOUT Coming to this part of the country means you can leave the car behind, and get out and about on foot or bike, and set in the heart of Big Tree Country, there s plenty to see and do wherever you are out of doors. There are miles and miles of quiet roads and cycle tracks in and around the area. You ll have plenty of time to relax and immerse yourself in peace and tranquillity, and breath in clean, unpolluted air. We have walks to suit everyone from tackling a Munro to a gentle stroll along the river. A85 St Fillans We have a series of recognised cycle and mountain biking routes covering this area to suit all abilities, ranging from a sedate cycle ride from Crieff to Innerpeffray to visit the library and chapel, or a longer, more energetic circuit ride from Crieff to Glen Almond, taking in the sweeping hills and views at the edge of the Highlands. 10 Every autumn we hold our own walking festival, The Drovers Tryst. Year on year, it attracts more and more visitors to take part in a week-long programme of organised walks, mountain bike challenges, workshops and other events. To kick off the Tryst our October market in James Square Crieff is themed around the festival; you are able to find out more about the history of the drovers as well as book yourself on to any of the events available. MACROSTY PARK, CRIEFF A NEW BEGINNING One of the things that makes Crieff popular with visitors, is its obvious reminders of a glorious past. Just a short walk from the town centre, you will find the mature trees, lawns and landscaped gardens of MacRosty Park. For decades this idyllic spot has made an ideal escape for a gentle stroll and some peace and quiet. The park was gifted to the town in 1902 by its former chief magistrate, James MacRosty. In 2003, a group called The Friends of MacRosty Park (registered charity: SC035454) got together to plan a major renovation of the park. The Friends have been hugely successful with their fundraising activities including obtaining a grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund. After years of hard work, the reopening is set for this summer. You ll never be far away from our local bird- or wildlife when you re exploring: pheasant, grouse, red kites, red deer, red squirrel, and hares are familiar inhabitants of our fields, woods and hillsides. The rivers and lochs offer plenty of superb opportunities for fishing or for water sports. For the more adventurous, you ll be able to go horse riding, quad biking, or take a Highland safari! If golf is your sport, this is your prefect destination. We have a good selection of quality and picturesque 9 and 18-hole courses all round the area including, the home of golf, Gleneagles. Whatever you decide to do, our area tourist office in the centre of Crieff has a good range of maps to help you plan your route and answer any questions, as well as being one of the best places to find out the latest local information. On 11 June 2011, The Friends of MacRosty Park are holding the grand opening celebrations. There will be a special parade through the town to replicate the original opening, and James MacRosty s descendents will be coming to Crieff from America for the occasion. There will be lots of themed Victorian events taking place in the park throughout the day. For more information about this event see local press. 11 A FAVOURITE LOCAL WALK - THE KNOCK WALK Choosing just a couple of local walks to include in this brochure has been a challenge. We are fortunate to have so many to choose from! However, this is the first one we thought of because it will show you the overall beauty of the area. Knock derives from the Gaelic word cnoc which means hill. The town of Crieff sits on the side of this tree covered hill, and there are many routes up to the starting point behind the Crieff Hydro Hotel. This walk is part of the Waymarked Walks network more walks in the area can be found at the local tourist office. A FAVOURITE LOCAL WALK - LADY MARY S WALK Probably our most well known walk. Named after Lady Mary Murray, whose family were local landowners in the early 19th century; she enjoyed taking a peaceful stroll beside the beautiful River Earn. Mostly tree lined, this walk looks beautiful at all times of the year. The route is level all the way round, and is accessible for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs. From the town centre, on foot or by car, go up Hill Street to Ferntower Road to the Hydro and the Knock. There is a small car park beyond the hotel on the right, and the walk begins up a wide path heading up steeply through the wooded area on the right hand side. After a short climb through mixed woodland the path leads you to open heath land and a spectacular viewpoint at the summit some 278m/911ft high. On a clear day you can admire panoramic views of the whole area and see the boundary between the rugged mountainous Highlands in the north and the green, fertile lowlands to the south. To the west, is Comrie with Ben Vorlich beyond, and Muthill, Auchterarder and the Ochil Hills are over in the southerly direction. To the east, you ll take in the views of the extensive farming land with the capital of the county, the city of Perth, in the distance. The walk begins at the bridge in MacRosty Park (page 18), where you ll find plenty of parking. Turn left onto the path alongside the Turret Burn and go through a small gate to reach the banks of the river. Follow the path alongside the river for approximately 1.5km and then, at a gap in the old railway embankment, the route doubles back to the start point through the woods on a sound pathway. If you are feeling more energetic, you ll see a signpost to Laggan Hill, just after the gap in the old railway embankment. Head up the hill for another the circular route through mixed woodland and admire the views along the way. Lady Mary s Walk and Laggan Hill Walk are also part of the Waymarked Walks network mentioned in the previous walk. For more woodland walks in the area, visit: CONTACT INFO FOR VISITOR ATTRACTIONS Auchingarrich tel: +44 (0) From the summit you can continue along the crest of the hill, following the blue waymarkers. You can walk east to the next village, Gilmerton, following a route that runs alongside Crieff Golf Club, or take the circular route round the summit through forestry land. Walks vary in length from 3 to 6km and are well signposted, and there are plenty of options depending on the time you have available or your energy levels. 12 THINGS TO DO Strathearn has so many visitor attractions that you will be spoilt for choice. You ll find the world famous side by side with some of our well kept local secrets. We have visitor and outdoor centres, distilleries, wildlife parks, stately homes and castles, even somewhere where it s Christmas all year round, there are so many diverse opportunities for every visitor to do something different. When you re out and about in the countryside, you ll come across examples of Strathearn s ancient past like mysterious standing stones, Pictish forts and Celtic chapels, and there are museums to help you discover more about the area and its traditions. The Crieff Visitor Centre houses a Highland Drovers Exhibition which explains all about the life and times of the cattle men which helped make Crieff an important part of Scotand s fascinating history. Glenturret Distillery, The Hosh, Crieff, Perthshire PH7 4HA Tel There are castles and grand houses to visit, as well as many more unusual buildings: literature lovers will be intrigued by Innerpeffray library, the oldest surviving lending library in Scotland.
