My eyes hurt, Lynn grumbles and rubs her eyes with her paws. Come on, Lynn, says Kyle. Let s stop playing and head outside for a short walk. He switched off the gaming console that they have been playing for hours. Would you like to read a book and enjoy the wind too? Kyle suggests. Whoaaaa, Lynn and Kyle shout. A very bright light shines through from the book, as they keep their eyes closed. Yes! This looks like a good adventure book to read! As Lynn grabs the book, it suddenly started shaking. The book burst open, its pages flipping wildly. 4 5
Lynn and Kyle open their eyes after a while. They are surprised to find themselves surrounded by greenery. Wow! Where are we? Lynn asks. She sees so many cubes around. The cubes look like dice with big holes on each side of their face. We must be in a park. If I remember correctly, these cubes are only found in Sembawang Park, Kyle ponders. They venture into a shelter area nearby. Kyle remembers seeing more cubes here. ACTIVITY How many cubes can you see? Count along with Lynn, and write down the total number of cubes! We are still missing some cubes! Help Kyle draw 3 more cubes in the space provided! 6 7
They continue to wander around the park. They follow a flight of stairs down towards the beach. Kyle basks in the warm sunlight while Lynn starts running on the sand. Both of them are enjoying this clear view of nature. They hear the sound of the waves as they crash onto the shore and feel the soft sand under their feet and paws. Lynn and Kyle builds a sandcastle. Suddenly, a crab crawled out from the doors of the sandcastle. Crystal, where are we? asks Lynn. We are in the Book of Adventures! Crystal replies. If you want to return home, you have to help us defeat a dangerous enemy by the name of Spike! He has been trying to attack everyone by making us go blind. How do we do that? Kyle enquired. I m sure Ben the wise banyan can help you out. Find him! Crystal cheers. Hey there! I have never seen the two of you before. I m Crystal, greets Crystal the crab. ACTIVITY Help Kyle and Lynn build another sandcastle for Crystal the Crab! 8 9
fishing yellow brown tankers cubes blue green So Kyle and Lynn set off to look for Ben the wise banyan to help them defeat the enemy, Spike. As they carry on their journey, they reach a pier. The pier is a beautiful sight. So many things to see in so many colours! There are big shipyards full of big in the sea. The cranes are in colour. The railing are, the sea is a deep and the ground is. There are people on the pier. Some of them are, something that both Kyle and Lynn enjoy together! Oh, what a beautiful pier! Lynn and Kyle are amazed by the things that they see but their vision is a little blurry. 10 ACTIVITY Help Kyle and Lynn fill in the blanks in the passage correctly with the helping words given. 11
Kyle and Lynn continue to look for Ben the wise banyan. As they wander on, they come across the Tin Soldier! Hello tin soldier! We are looking for Ben the wise banyan. Do you know where he is? asks Kyle. Go up the flight of stairs to my right and follow the path. You will pass by rows of trees. There will be ferns growing on some of the trees - the ferns feed on the nutrients in the barks of the trees, says the Tin Soldier. Follow the trail and you will meet Ben the wise banyan! Thank you, Tin Soldier! Kyle and Lynn wave goodbye as they rush towards their destination. ACTIVITY Help Kyle and Lynn continue their journey by drawing the stairs and the ferns! 12 13
Walking among the trees, it is so peaceful that they almost forget their mission. Soon, they reach a gigantic Banyan Tree. One of the many found in Sembawang Park. Wow, that is one huge and beautiful tree! exclaims Lynn. Why, thank you for your compliments. It is not easy being a big and strong banyan tree, says Ben the banyan, breaking the silence. You mean? asks Kyle. That s right! To defeat Spike, you have to avoid his poison, continues Ben. There are weapons prepared for you. It is found inside a cube. Follow this path and look for the only Banyan Tree with a cube in front of it. That is the tree, which Spike resides in, and the cube, which you will need in order to defeat Spike! All the best! Thank You, Ben! May you stay strong and wise for more years to come! Kyle and Lynn wish Ben well and head towards their target. So the two of you are ready to pit against Spike? Ben questions the kingfisher and the leopard cat. Spike is a mean ol spitting cobra. He shoots venom from his sharp fangs, aiming for the eyes to try and blind others. We will be fine. We have you to help us! says Kyle. Spike spits a special kind of poison. His poison contains erm... I forgot what those two letters are. In the alphabet, what two letters come after T? ACTIVITY Fill in the missing word. Which two letters come after T 14 in the alphabet? 14 15
Nervously, Kyle and Lynn walk on the path and finally reach the next Banyan Tree. They see the cube that holds their weapon. As they step closer towards it, a voice hisses in the shadow beyond the banyan tree. Who daressssssss to intrude onto my groundssssssss? shivers run down Kyle s and Lynn s backs. Spike appears from behind the banyan tree. Kyle and Lynn jumped in shock by the sudden appearance. Suddenly, two sparks of flash run by Kyle and Lynn. They missed it by a hairline! Spike gave an evil, laughing hiss as the two friends scramble to their feet and paws. As Kyle and Lynn muster their courage to confront Spike, the cube in front of them begin to shine brightly. A loud, thunderous roar was heard and the cube got split into half! A golden flare comes out from the cube to reveal Kyle and Lynn s weapons.. They are two pairs of sunglasses! 16 17
Kyle and Lynn put their sunglasses on immediately. They see an angered Spike approaching them, slithering as fast as he could. Spike rises, gets into position and lifts his fangs towards them! Kyle and Lynn witness Spike, inhaling one big breath, and hisses out the poison from his fangs! But Kyle and Lynn are prepared. They were calm and ready. When Spike shoots his poison towards them, they directed the poison back towards Spike with their sunglasses. Spike was caught off-guard. He got hurt by his own poison. Spike is now blind! In an instant, Kyle and Lynn watch as the spitting cobra flee and disappear into the shadows of the tree
A blinding, white light suddenly envelopes Kyle and Lynn. They closed their eyes tightly for fear of going blind. After a few moments of silence, they opened their eyes again. Kyle and Lynn are back home! That was a very fun adventure! We should do it again next time, Kyle! Lynn rejoice over the fact that they are both back home, safe and sound. I would love to, Lynn. For now, my eyes are tired. We now know that our eyesight is important. I will take extra care of my eyes from now on. Today has been a wonderful experience. I cannot begin to imagine what it would be like if I were to be blind, like Spike! Kyle gushed. The two friends laughed, but they know Kyle is right. The two friends settle down to take forty winks before their next adventure! 20 21
