8 Mottling: Visual Evaluation The visual perception of mottling is dependent on viewing distance Large mottles can be seen at far distances Small mottles are more noticeable at short distances Visual evaluation is subjective, since it depends on lighting conditions, observation distance, and viewing angle

10 Byk Cloud Runner: Optical Principle & Measurement Scale The meter is rolled 10 cm (3.94 in) to 100 cm (39.4 in) and lightness variation is measured point by point Mathematical filters divide the signal into 6 mottling ranges and a rating value is calculated for each angle and mottle size The higher the value, the more visible the mottle for that range Small Mottles = Impact of Material Large Mottles = Impact of Process
