10 Animal Village NM is a life oriented pet adoption and animal welfare center in Alamogordo, NM. It offers services to support humane relationships between people and the animals with whom they interact. Among these services are Subsidies for low-cost spay and neuter services Training support and solutions Free pet food-bank service Freedom Dogs program which allows participating animal control facilities and rescue organizations to apply for sanctuary and adoption placement for friendly dogs who have been abused, neglected, and are slated for euthanasia Boarding services in The Bunkhouse The facility officially opened on November 15, 2010 amid a sea of volunteers from Holloman Air Force Base and animal lovers from surrounding communities. Animal Village NM is New Mexico s newest comprehensively planned pet adoption and animal welfare services center. It is located on almost nine acres just outside Alamogordo, NM on Highway We want to offer a full range of services for animals, and teach people how to better care for their pets, Nancy Berg, co-founder of Animal Village NM, said. If we can talk to children early in their educational process, we can help families learn about spay and neuter and why it is crucial in saving lives Animal Village NM plans to provide services for New Mexico s animal lovers that haven t been found in one place before now. There will be day camps for children, with each day s theme geared to teaching awareness about different species. MOLLY IS A FREEDOM DOG Over 80 percent of euthanized dogs are pit bulls, Alyssa Aldridge, an adoption manager with the Forrest City Area Humane Society in Arkansas, said. And big black dogs are the next most euthanized. Molly is a black pit bull who was picked up by animal control after calls from concerned citizens. A happy ending seemed impossible. You could see every bone in her body. She was scarred, and scared of people. ANIMAL VILLAGE NM by Sunny Aris Molly s sad story could have ended right there, as it does for so many abused and neglected animals. But sometimes things work out and animal lovers connect with each other in different parts of the country to save an animal. It happened for Molly. Amanda Kostynyk arranges some of our transports to rescue, said Aldridge. Kostynyk ed Animal Village NM, asking for help with some other dogs. Sunny Aris and Nancy Berg (the founders of Animal Village NM) were willing to take two severely malnourished dogs we had, but those dogs were already rescued, said Aldridge. I suggested Molly instead. They agreed to take her before even seeing a picture of her. They just knew she deserved a chance. Working with Animal Village NM s Freedom Dogs program, Aldridge and Kostynyk struggled under tremendous time pressure to arrange vehicle and air transport for Molly from Arkansas to New Mexico. Molly was driven from Arkansas to Oklahoma. Next she flew from Oklahoma to Albuquerque and from Albuquerque to Alamogordo during a 5-day rescue marathon. Transportation for Molly was set up with Pilots and Paws, a volunteer transport group. The pilots use their own planes, gas and time. Each flew sections of the trip from Oklahoma to New Mexico. Animal Village NM is trying to find a home for Molly, the fi rst Freedom Dog accepted by AVNM, shows off her fi ne physique, great attitude, and yes, some battle scars. Post-starvation and once scheduled for execution in Arkansas, Molly (and 70 more adoptable, adorable canines rescued from abuse and neglect) is fl eshed out and safe now... awaiting adoption to a loving home. Page RG-14 Molly, and the other canines there now, including mastiff blend puppies, golden retrievers, boxers, 14 Chihuahuas from a hoarding case, heelers, basset blends, ChiWeenies, Catahoulas, and many other types of dogs. But a no-kill shelter means just that. Molly and all other accepted dogs are safe from euthanasia at Animal Village NM. Sean Murphy and his wife, Tracie, the volunteer coordinator for Animal Village NM, have been huge supporters of Animal Village NM. I suppose it boils down to a dual need for animals to have the right to live while helping control pet populations by ensuring animals are spayed/neutered to help reduce the number of unwanted pets, explained Sean Murphy, who is currently serving at Holloman Air Force Base. There are so many people ready, willing, and able to adopt pets, but a lot of shelters aren t able to keep animals long enough to allow for the right fit with the right family. No-kill shelters give animals a chance at a happy life. It takes a lot of love, a lot of work, and a lot of donations but in the end, it is always worth the effort. Tracie Murphy agreed. The service we do for these animals is out of love. These animals deserve every chance to find a forever home, and feel the love that most pets have. They didn t ask to be put on this earth. It s not fair to euthanize them because we can t place them within a specific amount of time. Some need extra attention, and love to develop into an animal who can be placed into the right home. These babies can benefit the families they go to as well. There is nothing like the unconditional love an animal gives its owner. I m not doing a service for them; they do a service for me! Tracie Murphy says Animal Village NM has become something of a community project. We have a lot of volunteers from Holloman Air Force Base who come out and walk the dogs, run the dogs, help us build pens, and clean up. The dogs also receive obedience training, to make them suitable for adoption. Future plans, depending on donations, include an eight-acre nature walk around the property, for doglovers, nature lovers, and community use such as Relay for Life and other fundraising events. The deliciously tempting aroma of their all-natural treats is heavenly! We LOVE Long Leash On Life We get all of our healthy supplies from there (and our yummy treats, too!) We feel the best ever after eating healthy food from Long Leash on Life Long Leash on Life Improving the Quality of Pets Lives 1. Foster an animal Shelters and rescue groups are always in need of people willing to foster animals. Whether it is raising bottle baby kittens or helping a mom dog or cat with babies or a caring for a senior animal with special needs, shelters need people who can offer a little extra attention and help to animals waiting for a home. Maybe a dog or cat needs more socialization or better canine citizen skills to be placed in a home. You can give Fido and Fluffy a boost toward adoption by fostering and working with them. 2. Pet food banks An increasing number of people depend on food banks to help feed their families. Animals are given up to shelters because there is not enough money to buy pet food. One solution is to provide pet food for your local food banks. Organize a group of people to gather torn bags of pet food or dented cans of dog and cat food from large grocery stores or Wal-Mart. Re-bag the food or donate it to local food banks. 3. Donate a bed to a shelter animal Kuranda beds are orthopedically correct for dogs and cats, raised off the floor so the animal isn t sleeping on cold concrete, easy to clean and chew-proof. These beds, made in the U.S.A., bring comfort to shelter dogs and cats. Kuranda provides a way for you to donate a bed to the shelter of your choice. The shelter pays nothing for the bed. If you want to consider this, go to: 4. Give up your holiday gift for an animal Consider asking your friends and relatives to donate to a local animal shelter or rescue group in your name. Whatever they were going to spend on your present can go to help animals instead. Tell them the shelter or group you prefer the donation go to and give them the link to the organization s donation page. 5. Conduct a holiday garage sale for the animals Gather all the things you want to get rid of to make room for new holiday gifts and have a garage sale. Ask other families in your neighborhood to donate items as well. Whatever money you raise from the sale will be donated to the local shelter or a rescue group. 6. Provide free spays and neuters to lucky animals Find out how much the shelter clinic charges for spays and neuters. Donate enough to cover a certain number of surgeries. This is one of the best gifts you can give an animal. It helps end pet overpopulation in your area and contributes to keeping an animal healthy. 7. Gather goods listed on a shelter s wish list Shelters and rescue groups often publish a wish list on their website. This might include pet food, paper towels, trash bags, laundry detergent to wash blankets, kitty litter and many other items. Put together a delivery to the shelter of a large box of items from their wish list. 8. Buy gifts from your shelter s store Many shelters and local rescue groups sell cards, calendars, t-shirts, mugs and other items on their website or at their adoption sites. Buying these as gifts helps the animals and makes your friends smile. 9. Buy from national rescue groups The ASPCA, HSUS, Farm Sanctuary, Best Friends and many more have an online shop with holiday cards, shirts, and other items. The purchase of these items helps them continue their work of helping animals. 10. Shop on websites where companies donate to animals and are some of the sites where you shop and the companies donate a percentage of sales to the animal charity of your choice.

12 Holiday Hazards for Pets Think of the holidays from your pet s perspective. New, exciting noises, lights, a tree in the living room, tinsel, ribbon, turkey leftovers in the trash can and many more elicit pleasures create a bonanza for your furry friends senses. But many of these delights are bad for our animals and some can even kill them. Here are a few things we can do to ensure that everyone s holidays are happy and safe. Keep regular daily routines. Fido needs his regular walks and Fluffy needs her litter box cleaned. Their daily needs haven t changed just because you are extra busy. Avoid any unexpected presents by sticking to your animals regular schedule. If your pet has an accident, don t punish him for something that is your fault. Paws off the decorations! Decking the halls may be fun but it s an accident waiting to happen for animals. Cats love bright, shiny trims and curling ribbon is the best. If your cat swallows ribbon, don t try to pull it out of her mouth because it can cut through the intestines. Call your veterinarian instead. Shimmering tinsel and small ornaments can block the digestive track if swallowed and can cause infinite problems for you and your animal. Seasonal plants aren t salad. Mistletoe, poinsettia and holly may look tasty to your animals but they can cause severe digestive upset complete with nausea, vomiting, pain and diarrhea. Keep these plants out of your pet s reach. Christmas tree dance. Have you ever seen a Christmas tree dance a jig? You will if your cat decides to climb it or the dog decides to go after a toy underneath it. And remember anything can look like a toy if it s on the floor. Anchor your tree to the ceiling or wall with a piece of nylon filament line. Putting unbreakable ornaments on the bottom third of the tree thwarts kitty curiosity when they take a slap at the twirling ornament within their reach. Saves you sweeping up a lot of broken glass, too. Watch out for the candle! Burning candles add lovely scent and soft light to a room but lit candles and cat tails don t mix. Remember cats are curious so the Page RG-16 candle might be tipped over starting a fire on Fluffy or the rug. If you use candles, make sure they are out of reach of your animals. Don t drink the water. If you have a real Christmas tree, be sure the water in the tree stand is covered so animals can t drink it. Preservatives and pine needles are dangerous for cats and dogs. Don t bite the electric cord. Hide the electric cords for the holiday lights under the tree skirt so playful kittens and puppies don t chomp down on them. Beyond blowing a fuse it can be harmful to the animal burning his mouth and giving him a shock. Don t let the cat/dog out. Friends and family might not pay attention to where the animals are when they come through the front door with packages and good cheer. Be sure your pets have current, readable identification on their collar that includes your name, address and phone number or have a microchip in case they scoot through that open door. There are treats and there are treats. Just like their human companions animals like a few extra goodies at the holidays. But be careful what kind of treats they are. Be sure you and your children don t feed cats and dogs human treats like chocolate, which can cause heart irregularities, seizures or even death, turkey or chicken bones, which may splinter and get stuck in furry throats, or alcohol. Dogs may be tempted by alcoholic drinks but it s not a good idea to let them drink it. It can cause alcohol poisoning resulting in a trip to the veterinary ER. Quiet please! Animals can become stressed out with a lot of activity and noise. When this happens, they may act in unusual ways such as biting, howling or scratching, which they would never do ordinarily. If you see Fido or Fluffy is stressed, put them in a bedroom for quiet time. They will stay calm and guests won t have to worry about doing something wrong for the animal. It s a win/win solution. Enjoy your holidays and let your animals enjoy theirs, too. A little thought ahead of time will save you and your fur friends a lot of anxiety. ANIMAL VILLAGE NM (continued from page 14) We want this to be a real center for animal welfare. The more the public uses our facilities, the more they will see our great animals and adopt them. The more animals who are adopted, the more we can bring here away from horrible situations of cruelty and neglect, Berg said. We are trying to create a circle of awareness, but we must create it step by step, with each step proving by donation support that it is wanted by New Mexico s animal lovers. Berg is thrilled at the outpouring of support from Holloman Air Force Base, When the soldiers come to run our dogs, and help around the center, moving our kennels and working hard to help us save lives, I feel so happy it makes me want to cry. When I was seven years old I told my grandmother that when I got big I was going to start an orphanage for dogs and cats. This has been on my bucket list for a long time! To become a member of Animal Village NM and see what s going on daily, visit the Animal Village NM Facebook page. Animal Village NM operates under the 501c3 of the Kato Foundation, which runs Kitty City (soon to be featured on Animal Planet s new series, Must Love Cats ). All donations are tax-deductible.
