11 STUD-DOGS In 2004 two stud-dogs were imported: LEITH BHROGAN CASS (FINLAND) VILLA ROSAS LOCHLAINN (SWEDEN) In five litters arrived from male borrowed from Sweden: SEAMROG CAPTAIN BENJAMIN SISCO This experience has proven its efficacy for our conditions: without overloading the breed with the progeny of one stud-dog, it allows us to diversify the gene pool.

18 PROBLEMS 1. The NBC has no possibility to carry out an accurate account of the born and registered litters 2. There are no veterinary services that would be interested in having a deeper insight into problems of genetic diseases of a single breed and their control 3. The breed still has a rather narrow gene pool with obvious overloading with the lines of the same stud-dogs and high inbred factor in the appreciable part of the breedstock 4. A home market state: stagnation is observable; the offer exceeds the demand; Wheatens who are of interest in conformation and/or pedigree are sold as pets and completely pass out of sight of the Wheaten Community

19 OUR FUTURE? OUR FUTURE? The future of Wheatens in Russia will depend on many factors, the major of them being: a good will of breeders not to oppose themselves to other Kennels, but to co-operate; enthusiasm and organizational capabilities of the breeders to enlarge and diversify the gene pool market state We do hope that owing to the breed fans, enthusiasts and cooperation with foreign Kennels, the level of the breed in Russia will see further improvement
